As we begin the holy season of Advent, I hope you will make sure to pick up a copy of the Sunday News pamphlet available near the doors of the church. There are many ways to invest yourself in special offerings throughout the season. Today at 4 p.m., join us for Advent Lessons & Carols, the first of a trio of services now through Epiphany. Tomorrow launches a new season of Weekday Meditations led by the clergy of Saint Michael that will help you walk through the season. I also encourage you to invest in your discipleship growth and in our shared ministry by committing to an annual stewardship gift this year. Please see the blue box at the bottom of this page and make your gift today. What we do makes a true impact, and we need you!

In Lutheran Germany, Nun komm der Heiden Heiland, is associated with the first day of Advent. Its text begins with a pleading for Christ to come to His people: “Come now, Savior of the gentiles!” This cry underscores the intent of Advent: to await the birth of our Lord. The setting heard in today’s prelude features a heavily ornamented statement of the hymn melody played in the right hand over ponderous, slowly moving statements in the left hand and pedal.
Children ages three through eight are invited to meet a member of our ministry staff by the pulpit to be escorted to children’s chapel; they will return to the congregation following the Peace.

People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in a cloud’ with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Then he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. The Nicene Creed (standing)
All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Peter Warlock’s “Adam lay ybounden” is a choral setting of a 15th-century Middle English carol reflecting on the Fall of Man and redemption through Christ. Warlock’s use of modal harmonies and lyrical counterpoint evokes a medieval atmosphere, while his modern harmonic touches add depth to this brief but evocative piece. It remains a popular choice for Christmas programs, blending Renaissance influences with a contemporary sensibility.
All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.
James MacMillan’s “O Radiant Dawn” draws upon the ancient “O Antiphons” of Advent, specifically invoking the image of Christ as the light breaking into the world’s spiritual darkness. MacMillan’s setting is infused with a sense of yearning and hope expressed through lush, resonant harmonies that rise and fall like a prayerful plea for salvation. The music builds slowly, mirroring the dawning light, as the voices blend in a radiant crescendo, capturing the profound anticipation of the coming of Christ.

César Franck César Franck’s organ reputation rests firmly on just a dozen pieces, which include the three great Chorals and the “Pièce Héroïque,” all dating from 1868 until the year of Franck’s death in 1890. Today’s postlude comes from a group of 44 pieces, most of which were published posthumously under the editorship of Franck’s son, Georges, in 1905. These were designed as liturgical offertories, for parish organists “in the provinces,” playable on harmonium or larger pipe organs.
