SAINT MICHAEL

and All Angels Episcopal Church

All Saints’ Day November 3, 2024

9 AM TRADITIONAL Church

WELCOME

FROM THE RECTOR

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

Today we celebrate two feast days: All Saints’ Day and All Souls Day. All of our regular Sunday services will celebrate the great “saints” of the church, those who have come before us and provided guidance in our earthly pilgrimage toward God. Then on your way to your Sunday Formation class, stop by the St. Mary’s Guild table to buy a tasty treat. This afternoon, we will gather at 4 p.m. for a very sacred moment: a special All Souls Evensong in the church. In this special service, we remember and celebrate the lives of all those we love and see no longer. It’s at this special service when we read the names of all those connected to our community who have died in the last year, accompanied by the transcendent music of our Saint Michael Choir. I hope you will return and join us!

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

The Collect of the Day (standing)

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

The flowers adorning the altar are given to the glory of God and in thanksgiving of the marriage of Morgan Allen and Campbell Jones.

Justus Parrotta serves as Organist and Schola Director at Immaculate Conception Church, Shaw-Mount Vernon, Washington D.C. His composition include works for solo instruments, voice, choir, orchestra, opera, and film. “Salve Festa Dies” is based on the Easter plainsong hymn of the same name. Throughout the triumphant work, the momentum increases leading up to full organ.

Children ages three through eight are invited to meet a member of our ministry staff by the pulpit to be escorted to children’s chapel; they will return to the congregation following the Peace.

Chanted by the Choir to a psalm setting by Joseph Barnby.

On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death forever. Then the LORD GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the LORD for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm (seated) Psalm 24

The earth is the LORD’S and all that is in it, * the world and all who dwell therein.

For it is he who founded it upon the seas * and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep.

“Who can ascend the hill of the LORD? * and who can stand in his holy place?”

“Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, * who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn by what is a fraud.

They shall receive a blessing from the LORD * and a just reward from the God of their salvation.”

Such is the generation of those who seek him, * of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.

Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in.

“Who is this King of glory?” * “ The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle.”

Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in.

“Who is he, this King of glory?” *

“ The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory.”

Sequence Hymn (standing, sung by all)

“Now the green blade riseth from the buried grain” Noël nouvelet

The Gospel (standing) John 11:32-44

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. O ver it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.

We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Stanford’s “Beati quorum via” is from Three Motets, Op. 38, published in 1905. Stanford uses a contrapuntal writing style, in which each of the 6 parts has its own interweaving melody. Stanford creates a sublime masterpiece that beautifully reflects its text. Listen as each voice emerges and rejoins from the fluid texture of the piece.

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer B (standing)

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant L ift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to g ive thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus and Benedictus (standing, sung by all) Hymn S 129 “Holy, holy, holy”

Please kneel as you are able.

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and g ave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for

many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

All We remember his death,

We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these g ifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Michael and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

Sir William H. Harris lived and worked through the first three quarters of the twentieth century. Harris’s music is harmonically conservative in comparison to that of many of his peers in the 20th century, and quickly found a place in the canon of Anglican repertoire. This morning’s anthem presents a meditation on a text originally written for All Saints’ Day. It features soaring melodies, luscious harmonic shifts, and simple but profound text setting.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread (standing, sung by all) Hymn S 154

The Post-Communion Prayer (standing, spoken by all)

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
