9 AM TRADITIONAL Church
WELCOME
FROM THE RECTOR
The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata
We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.
Tonight, please join us at 4 p.m. for Choral Evensong featuring the Saint Michael Choir and Choristers. Evensong offers a moment of peace and beauty in our very busy lives. Come enjoy our Saint Michael Choristers as they prepare to travel to London and sing at St. Paul’s Cathedral as the resident choir in 2026. And buy your tickets now for the bi-annual Mardi Gras Party on Friday, February 21! Hosted by the Women of Saint Michael, the party is filled with music, delicious Cajun-inspired food, and festive fun. Celebrate in style with an evening of beads, bling, and the vibrant spirit of Mardi Gras.
As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Welcome
Entering Procession (standing, sung by all) Hymn 259
“Hail to the Lord who comes” Old 120th
The Opening Acclamation and Collect for Purity (standing)
Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.
Celebrant Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Song of Praise (standing, sung by all) Hymn S 278
“Glory to God in the highest”
The Collect of the Day (standing)
Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Let us pray.
Almighty and everliving God, we humbly pray that, as your onlybegotten Son was this day presented in the temple, so we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts by Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Tightly woven 32ndnote scales, suspensions, dramatic octave pedal effects, tensionbuilding repetitions, and appoggiatura harmonies define this movement. The opening theme transitions into contrasting fugal episodes. Its intricate ritornello structure aligns with other mature organ works, such as the preludes BWV 548 and BWV 546.
Children ages three through eight are invited to meet a member of our ministry staff by the pulpit to be escorted to children’s chapel; they will return to the congregation following the Peace.
Chanted by the Choir to a psalm setting by Joseph Barnby.
The Lesson (seated) Malachi 3:1-4
Thus says the Lord, See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight—indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the LORD in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.
Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.
The Psalm (seated) Psalm 24:7-10
L ift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in.
“ Who is this King of glory?” *
“ The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle.”
L ift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in.
“ Who is he, this King of glory?” *
“ The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory.”
Sequence Hymn (standing, sung by all) Hymn 257, v.1
“O Zion, open wide thy gates” Edmonton
The Gospel (standing) Luke 2:22-40
Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, the parents of Jesus brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord,
“Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my e yes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.” And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed-and a sword will pierce your own soul too.” There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband se ven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eig hty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished e verything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.
Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.
The Sermon (seated) The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata
The Nicene Creed (standing)
All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Thomas Tallis (c. 1505–1585) offers a haunting setting of “O nata lux de lumine,“ the office hymn for Lauds on the Feast of the Transfiguration, observed on the last Sunday before Lent. The piece features moments of pitch cross-relation that produce harmonic discord, particularly on the words redemptor (redeemer), perditis (the lost), and corporis (Christ’s body). Through these dissonances, Tallis evokes a sense of suffering in this redemptive text.
All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.
Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to g ive thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus and Benedictus (standing, sung by all) Hymn S 128
“Holy, holy, holy”
Please kneel as you are able.
We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and g ave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore, according to his command, O Father,
All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these g ifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Michael and all your saints, we may enter the e verlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the first born of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread (kneeling, sung by all) Hymn S 154
“Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia”
All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.
The Sinfonia opening Bach’s Actus Tragicus (Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit, BWV 106) sets a reflective tone with its poignant interplay of recorders and violas da gamba, creating one of Bach’s most moving instrumental introductions. The cantata, composed in 1707 during Bach’s tenure as a church organist in Mühlhausen, reflects on mortality, faith, and salvation. In the movement “Heute, heute wirst du mit mir,” based on Jesus’ words to the thief on the cross (Luke 23:43), the soloist’s serene proclamation of Christ’s promise contrasts with the choir’s consoling chorale melody, powerfully expressing redemption. The inclusion of Luther’s setting of Simeon’s words, Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin (“In peace and joy I now depart”), emphasizes the central message: through Christ, death is not an end but a gateway to eternal peace.
Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
Communion Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir)
Today you will be with me in Paradise.
With peace and joy I depart, according to God’s will, My heart and mind are comforted, calm, and quiet. As God had promised me: death has become my sleep.
- Luke 23:43
The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all)
Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Blessing (kneeling)
The Dismissal (standing)
Deacon Let us go forth in the name of Christ.
People Thanks be to God.
Departing Procession (standing, sung by all) Hymn 657
“Love divine, all loves excelling” Hyfrydol
Fugue in B minor, BWV 544/II
Johann Sebastian Bach
The fugue adopts a more measured approach than the prelude. Its seemingly simple theme undergoes numerous variations as Johann Sebastian Bach explores different keys. At the Golden Mean—a natural and artistic proportion—a second theme emerges, adding both drama and complexity.
