NOVEMBER 10, 2024

I am very pleased to welcome you to Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church this evening. Every year, Saint Michael and All Angels celebrates Veterans Day with a special, festive service. Our time of prayer and praise honors all those who have taken the oath of service and those who care for them. Although the sacrifices made can never be repaid, it is our hope that this evening’s worship will be a grace-filled tribute to all those who give and have given so generously.

In preparation for worship, I invite you to take a few moments to breathe deeply and center your heart and mind. What we do tonight connects us to faithful Christians through the centuries, and with countless faithful men and women in our own community.

No matter who you are, God walks with you and sustains you, and together, we can care for one another along the way. If you are seeking a community of faith, know that we would love for you to join us at Saint Michael. Our prayers are with you tonight and for the journey ahead.

Blessings,

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata Rector

Officiant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Officiant Let us pray.

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The First Lesson (seated) Isaiah 58:6-12

Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am. If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday. The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail. Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in.

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Hymn (standing, sung by all)

“O beautiful for spacious skies” Materna

Hymn 719

The Second Lesson (seated)

Matthew 25:31-40

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me’.”

Homily (seated) The Right Reverend Ann Ritonia VIIIth Bishop Suffragan of Armed Forces and Federal Ministries Major, United States Marine Corps, Retired

Anthem (seated)

Hymn for America Stephen Paulus

We have loved you for your rivers, We have loved you for your shores; Every treasure you have shown us, Every seed that you have sown; We have loved you for your mountains, For your prairies, for your fields, All these gifts we have been given, All these glories that we share; Now we thank you for these blessings, We, your people, everywhere.

Many are the stars of heaven, Many are the hopes of earth; All around us, worlds unfolding, All around these dreams to grow; From the moment of our rising, Till we rest when day is done, May we tell our hearts’ own story, Hearts that honor and believe, Through our care for one another, For this life and land we love.

Litany (standing)

From the Book of Worship for United States Armed Forces

Leader Let us give thanks to God for the land of our birth with all its chartered liberties. For all the wonder of our country’s story.

People We give you thanks, O God.

Leader For leaders in nation and state, and for those who in days past and in these present times have labored for the commonwealth.

People We give you thanks, O God.

Leader For those who in all times and places have been true and brave, and in the world’s common ways have lived upright lives and ministered to their fellows.

People We give you thanks, O God.

Leader For those who served their country in its hour of need, and especially for those who gave even their lives in that service.

People We give you thanks, O God.

Leader O almighty and merciful God, as we remember these your servants, remembering with gratitude their courage and strength, we hold before you those who mourn them. Look upon your bereaved servants with your mercy. As this day brings them memories of those they have lost, may it also bring your consolation and the assurance that their loved ones are alive now and forever in your living presence.

The Collect for Heroic Service (standing)

O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy. Grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. This we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect for the Nation (standing)

Lord God Almighty, you have made all the peoples of the earth for your glory, to serve you in freedom and in peace: Give to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Anthem (seated)

Battle Hymn of the Republic

Peter Wilhousky

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps, They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps: His day is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me. As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free, While God is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

(Final Chorus – Congregation joins in)

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

The Armed Services Medley Army

Over hill, over dale, As we hit the dusty trail,

And the caissons go rolling along.

In and out, hear them shout, Counter march and right about,

And the caissons go rolling along.

Then it’s hi! hi! hee! In the field artillery,

Shout out your numbers loud and strong,

For where e’er you go, You will always know,  That the caissons go rolling along.

Marine

Hymn

From the Halls of Montezuma To the shores of Tripoli

We fight our country’s battles In the air, on land, and sea;

First to fight for right and freedom. And to keep our honor clean;

We are proud to claim the title Of United States Marine.

Navy

Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh.

Farewell to college joys, we sail at break of day-ay-ay-ay. Through our last night on shore, drink to the foam, Until we meet once more.

Here’s wishing you a happy voyage home.

Air Force

Off we go into the wild blue yonder, Climbing high into the sun; Here they come zooming to meet our thunder,

At ‘em boys, Give ‘er the gun! (Give ‘er the gun now!)

Down we dive, spouting our flame from under,

Off with one helluva roar!

We live in fame or go down in flame. Hey!

Nothing’ll stop the U.S. Air Force!

Coast Guard

We’re always ready for the call, We place our trust in Thee. Through howling gale and shot and shell, To win our victory. “Semper Paratus” is our guide, Our pledge, our motto, too. We’re “Always Ready,” do or die! Aye! Coast Guard, We fight for you.
