August is a busy month as families get a new school year started, and we share our hearts with our most vulnerable neighbors. In addition to our regular worship services, join us for our educational offerings. Details for children and teens can be found on the inside back cover of this bulletin and on our website, and adult classes and other offerings can be found in the separate Sunday News handout available on tables outside the worship space. There is plenty for everyone, so plug in today!
As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Craig Phillips is an American composer and organist. Phillips currently serves as the Director of Music at All Saints’ Church, Beverly Hills. His choral and organ music is heard in churches and cathedrals across the United States, and many of his works have been performed in concert throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.
Children ages three through eight are invited to meet a member of our ministry staff by the pulpit to be escorted to children’s chapel; they will return to the congregation following the Peace.

Celebrant We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.
We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.
To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Aaron Copland is regarded today as the composer who, perhaps more than any other, established a uniquely American voice in the concert hall. In the 1920s and 30s, having found the heritage of serious composition in the United States lacking, he turned instead to the rich wellspring of American folk music. This included what Copland termed “local color,” the distinctive sounds from various regions of the Americas. Copland arranged “Zion’s Walls” in his second set of Old American Songs. He also used its melody for the song “The Promise of Living” in his opera The Tender Land.
All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.
Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to e vil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

Sir Edward Cuthbert Bairstow offers a beautiful setting of text from The Song of Solomon, “I sat down under His shadow,” by using the key of e minor and lush vocal harmonies in the lower ranges of all voices.
Despite Vincent Lübeck’s longevity and fame, very few of his compositions survive: a handful of organ preludes and chorales in the North German style, a few cantatas and several pieces for harpsichord. Of his works, the organ pieces are the most important: influenced by Buxtehude and Reincken, Lübeck composed technically and artistically sophisticated works, with frequent virtuosic passages for pedal, five-voice polyphony, and other devices rarely used by most of the composers of the period.
