The first sunday after epiphany: baptism of our lord Holy baptism and Holy Eucharist Rite II The service begins on page 299 of the red Book of Common Prayer.

The Word of God Prelude Bach’s rendering of “Christ, unser Herr, zum Jordan kam” (Christ, our Lord, to Jordan came), a Lutheran chorale tune, is enmeshed with symbolism. The trio’s flowing bass line is thought to represent the flowing waters of the Jordan River, while the upper two voices outline a cross figure. Thus, a musical picture of a baptism in a river is created. The hymn melody (Hymn 139) is heard in sustained notes in between the bass line and upper voices.

Hymn continues on the next page.

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe * and strips the forests bare. And in the temple of the LORD * all are crying, “Glory!” The LORD sits enthroned above the flood; * the LORD sits enthroned as King for evermore. The LORD shall give strength to his people; * the LORD shall give his people the blessing of peace. Sequence Hymn (standing, sung by all) “Christ, when for us you were baptized” Caithness

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

People

Glory to you, Lord Christ.

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was

clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” Gospeler

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. The Holy Communion Offertory Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir) Down to the river to pray

Sheldon Curry

As I went down to the river to pray, studying about that good ol’ way. And who shall wear the starry crown? Good Lord, show me the way. Oh, sisters, let’s go down, let’s go down, come on down. Oh, sisters, let’s go down, down to the river to pray. As I went down to the river to pray, studying about that good ol’ way. And who shall wear the starry crown? Good Lord, show me the way.

Made popular by the film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, this Appalachian-flavored spiritual is a genuine, heartfelt plea for renewal. The piece opens with a simple, unison statement of the first theme. Throughout the piece, more voices are added as the plea to go down to the river to pray is repeated.

Oh, brothers, let’s go down, let’s go down, come on down. Oh, brothers, let’s go down, down to the river to pray. As I went down to the river to pray, studying about that good ol’ way. And who shall wear the starry crown? Good Lord, show me the way. Oh, fathers, let’s go down, let’s go down, come on down. Oh, fathers, let’s go down, down to the river to pray. As I went down to the river to pray, studying about that good ol’ way. And who shall wear the starry crown? Good Lord, show me the way. Oh, mothers, let’s go down, let’s go down, come on down. Oh, mothers, let’s go down, down to the river to pray.

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer B (standing) Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Sanctus and Benedictus (standing, sung by all) “Holy, holy, holy, Lord” William Mathias

Hymn S 128

Please kneel as you are able We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

12

All

We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Michael and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

The text of this anthem comes from the poem “Whitsunday” written by the 17th-century Welsh poet, orator, member of Parliament, and Anglican priest George Herbert. The text speaks about the spiritual gifts the Holy Spirit bestowed upon the apostles, and asks Him to restore these gifts to all of his children so that they too may spread His light to all they encounter.

Communion Motet (sung by the Saint Michael Choir) Listen, sweet dove

Grayston Ives

Listen sweet dove unto my song, And spread thy golden wings in me; Hatching my tender heart so long, Till it get wing and flie away with thee. Such glorious gifts thou didst bestow The earth did like a heav’n appear, The starres were coming down to know If they might mend their wages and serve here. The sunne which once did shine alone, Hung down his head and wisht for night, When he beheld twelve sunnes for one Going about the world and giving light. Lord though we change thou art the same, The same sweet God of love and light; Restore this day for thy great name, Unto his ancient and miraculous right. - George Herbert, 1633 The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all) Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Postlude In dir ist Freude, BWV 615

Johann Sebastian Bach

In the opening of the chorale prelude, the song’s first four notes ring out as a joyful antiphonal conversation between voices. This motivic fragment is repeated as a bold and festive announcement. The full melody emerges gradually, like a puzzle image coming together. Listen to the way Bach embellishes the melody with exuberant running lines and adventurous harmonic turns, reinforcing the text (In Thee is gladness). The chorale prelude takes shape out of disparate parts, grows in intensity, and culminates in a celebratory flourish.

AMISTAD BOLIVIA YOUTH MISSION TRIP Amistad, Bolivia Youth Houses

Since 2000, Saint Michael has supported the orphaned children and adolescents of Villa Amistad in Cochabamba, Bolivia, helping to successfully bring them to independent living through life in transitional youth houses. During the pandemic, the adolescents were particularly affected by the isolation of quarantine. Our support will help them receive the educational, medical, spiritual, and emotional support they need to overcome their traumatic past.

Amistad Bolivia Youth Mission Trip July 29 – August 8, 2024 Registration open now.

The trip, led by the Rev. Robin Hinkle and the Saint Michael Youth Minister, Sam Moore, takes place from July 29 – August 8, 2024, at Villa Amistad in Bolivia. For more information, contact The Rev. Robin Hinkle at rhinkle@saintmichael.org.
