Rector’s Report

From any angle, 2018 was a great year at Saint Michael and All Angels. We completed the Refresh project, hosted wildly popular panels, increased our attendance, and invested more in discipleship and formation across the church. We can be proud of what we did together, but what is most exciting is how our momentum is growing!

Everywhere I look, I see more energy and excitement. At least once a week, someone sends me a note telling me how much they appreciate our church, and I’m stopped Re v. D in the hallway every Sunday by someone who is excited about how great it feels to just ta, ir a r. C hristopher D. G be in the building. I’ve even had people tell me that when they’re away, they make sure to watch our sermons and services online because they miss being physically present. What a great way to feel about our church. As I reflect on the year gone by, I give thanks for the countless ways people in this parish have invested themselves in the Gospel work of our community. Our reason for being is first and foremost our discipleship of Jesus Christ. Every time I participate in a service of baptism, a wedding, or even a burial, I witness just how powerfully God is at work here. The sacred work of life and love is being done in big and small ways all around us. Near the end of the year, one of our beloved members, Gloria Hocking, died after a very short illness. The celebration of her life was beautiful, and afterward, her husband, Sam, wrote a note to me and granted me permission to share one section in which he said, “I feel sorry for those who have elected not to associate with a church, especially Saint Michael… I think about the love and support a church congregation can give and realize that the church is a top priority institution that must survive.” I’m pleased to see that Saint Michael is moving beyond just surviving — we are beginning to thrive. In addition to the primary work of our community, we have taken great steps toward a bright future. In 2018, most of the physical work of the Refresh, Renew, Revive project was completed. As you know, the response from our congregation was overwhelming. By giving more than double what was requested, we were able to complete projects we hadn’t even imagined, including all the wonderful work done in the Saint Michael Chapel. The investment in our community did not stop with the Refresh project. In 2018 we invested in significant ways in our discipleship formation for all ages. We kicked off the school year with an unprecedented, live reading of the entire Bible, streamed online for thousands to experience. Our focus on scripture continued with God’s Story lessons each Sunday for all ages. Sunday school attendance is up across the board, not least for the adults. We also began engaging our late elementary and middle school students through our new Chorister program that has continued to grow into 2019. In all those ways and more, our young people and young families are engaging more regularly than they have in years.

February 24, 2019

Looking beyond ourselves, three major public events brought the community through our doors. Our first interfaith panel occured in January, and although the church was at physical capacity, the attention it received online was stunning, drawing nearly 1.5 million views to date. Later in the year, we hosted a symposium on human trafficking in Dallas. The symposium engaged dozens of partner organizations from the city and state and brought together thought leaders from around the country. Then in September, we hosted Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Presiding Bishop Michael Curry for a first-ever conversation between the two leaders. That conversation drew international attention and became a resource for churches around the world. Our attention at both small, private formation experiences, paired with international public offerings, underscores Saint Michael’s unique calling in our church. We are regularly described as a “resource parish” within the Episcopal Church, yet the idea of what a resource can be is often too small. We are beginning to move into a new reality where we take our resources seriously. Whether that means that one young child gets the highest quality Christian formation we can offer, or that the nation knows we open our doors to every person seeking God’s truth, Saint Michael can be a bright light in a dark world. We can remind everyone around us just how much God’s love can transform the world for the good. Which brings me back to our community. What I have outlined above, the amazing kingdom work we have done, would not be possible without those of us in our community who commit to the work of our church, and do so fully. We are all called to do three things in our community: worship, serve, and give. I want everyone in this parish to make that sacred commitment, and we are far short of that goal. Each of us is called by God to do sacred, Spirit work in the world, but at present, less than half of our membership is fully engaged. As we look toward the future, I believe we can do better, and when we do better, we will be better — and that’s the kind of church our world needs most!

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata Rector

On September 20, 2018, Saint Michael rector, The Rev. Dr. Christopher Girata, moderated the historic conversation between The Most Rev. Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, and The Most Rev. Michael B. Curry, Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church.

This past year was a remarkable year in the life of our church, full of events that brought energy to our halls. Some (but certainly not all) of these notable events include the Interfaith Panel: Islam, Judaism and Christianity presented by the Women of Saint Michael in January, the Bible read-through in August, the conversation between the Archbishop of Canterbury and our Presiding Bishop Michael Curry in September, Saint Michael Presents concerts, a Human Trafficking Symposium, ar W et S and the summer Pub Theology series. Ongoing outreach efforts such as the Farmers ior p el li ngs, 2 0 1 8 S en Market, the St. Michael's Woman’s Exchange, and our partnership with Jubilee continue to grow and thrive. In the past few years, the vestry has put more emphasis on strategic matters, while still fulfilling its duty to manage the secular affairs of the Church. This year’s vestry continued the five-year vision process that was developed by the 2017 vestry under Eric Conner’s leadership. As you may remember, the 2017 Vestry worked with clergy and staff to develop a series of imperatives and initiatives that served as a strategic plan for the church. This year’s vestry members, the clergy and staff continued to implement these initiatives. We also held a retreat with clergy and staff in which we reviewed the Initiatives together and revised them as needed. An important part of the vestry’s work is to oversee the financial health of the Church. I encourage you to read Treasurer Kathy Kelley’s report for detailed information on the Church’s finances. Kathy, Rob Baber, and the members of the Finance Committee did an excellent job in overseeing the church’s budget and expenses. We were thrilled to end the year with a budget surplus. Revenues exceeded the budget for this year, due to the generosity of our pledging members and to those who made unpledged contributions. On the expense side, our clergy and staff worked diligently to keep expenses in line with the budget. The budget surplus will provide additional funds for the School Transition Fund (in advance of the move of ESD from Saint Michael to its Merrell Road campus) and the Facilities Maintenance Fund. The vestry also spent substantial time preparing for the future of our Church. In early September, Saint Michael filed a zoning application to allow a mixed-use development on the land to the north of the church. The plan is a culmination of years of planning by church leaders, including successive Vestries and special committees, to determine the best use of this property for the church’s benefit. This project has the potential to not only transform our campus, but to allow Saint Michael to be a better steward of all our assets and increase our investment in our mission and ministry. The rector and members of the Campus Planning Committee held meetings with parishioners from late summer to the end of the year to update parishioners on this project. Vestry members were available to parishioners who had questions or comments about this project.

Determining how the funds from any future development of the north land might be used by Saint Michael is an important strategic issue. Even though no funds have been received yet, lay leaders from the vestry and the Saint Michael Foundation have been meeting to consider Saint Michael’s priorities, and how north land proceeds could be preserved and used over the long term to advance those priorities. While these questions are still hypothetical since zoning has not been approved, we recognize that we need to have a thoughtful, well-considered plan in place that aligns with our collective values and the needs of our church. We have a lot to look forward to. Church clergy, staff, and lay leaders are preparing for ESD’s move from our church campus, which will give the Saint Michael Episcopal School the opportunity to expand. A group of parishioners have started to plan for the 75th anniversary of the founding of Saint Michael, and the St. Michael's Woman’s Exchange will soon celebrate its 60th anniversary. I have learned a lot serving as Senior Warden. I was continually reminded that a church is unlike any other organization. Our parishioners care deeply and personally about our church. I developed a profound appreciation for the lay leaders, in all areas of the church, who came before me and will come after me. I only served for a year, but we have leaders who work for years on Altar Guild, or as ushers, or in the choir. I hope that the work we accomplished last year will benefit both those who are here now and those who come after us. Finally, as I spent so much time here week after week, I felt my priorities in every part of my life start to change as I watched others serve God in His Church. In the end, this is what I am most grateful for. It has been an honor to work with our Rector Chris Girata, the clergy, and staff. I want to especially thank Sally Schupp for her contributions as Junior Warden. She was always there to talk over problems and offer solid advice, and her knowledge of the Church was invaluable. I also am grateful to the entire vestry for their hard work and dedication. Finally, Warren Houser, who served as Warden-at-Large last year, will be a fantastic Senior Warden. I look forward to the future here at Saint Michael.

aint Michael and All Angels Church Finances HIGHLIGHTS w 2018 proved to be a favorable year financially for Saint Michael, achieving a net surplus of $13,625. I am pleased to report that our finances are sound and our cash reserves are adequate. ur

Given all of the above, Saint Michael ended the year on solid financial footing with a final net surplus after reserves of $13,652. 2019 FINANCIAL BUDGET: YOUR PLEDGE MATTERS

At the conclusion of our Stewardship campaign that runs from September to January, we determine the annual revenue available for our ministries for the following year. We use the actual pledges in hand to determine our revenue budget, meaning that every pledge matters. We are pleased to report that this year’s Stewardship Campaign resulted in a 6% growth of our current year pledge budget compared to the prior year’s actual level.

er

S

elley, S

re MAA T

as

w The strong fiscal year was

primarily driven by above-budget receipts in both pledged and unpledged contributions, creating a 4% gain in 2018 revenue over budget. w In addition to ongoing church-wide expenses being well managed, we were able to cover needed building maintenance, set aside funds for reserves, and continue to support Mission & Outreach ministries.

In determining expenses, our staff engages in a professional budgeting process in which they forecast costs for their ministry area. The overarching goals for 2019 were to continue our multi-year focus on growing ministry offerings for families of all ages while enhancing our excellent worship experiences. The staff has exciting ideas but ministry area requests needed to be trimmed to match the expected revenue. An interesting fact is that Saint Michael is a very people-oriented organization and staffing costs make up over two-thirds of total expenses.

w Looking forward, our budget for 2019 reflects a nice growth in pledges resulting from a successful Stewardship campaign allowing for program expenses to support excellence in worship and expanded family engagement. 2018 FINANCIAL RESULTS Our financial results for 2018 were strong and better than budget in most areas. Our Net Operating Revenue came in at $5,441,219 which was 4% over our budget of $5,210,000. This overage was primarily due to the church’s strong effort in collecting pledges through quarterly reminders, as well as the energy and interest of many parishioners who met or exceeded their pledge obligations. At the same time, our clergy and staff managed costs well resulting in total expenses being $31,159 under budget. The cumulative result is that we ended the year with a positive net operating surplus before allocation to reserves.

To summarize, our 2019 budget is based on Total Revenues of $6,424,000 compared to prior year budget of $6,026,000 and prior year actual of $6,257,656. The bottom line result is a modest $509 budgeted surplus for 2019. At this time, we are not budgeting an allocation for reserves but plan to re-evaluate the need later in the year. Please see accompanying budget table for details. STATUS OF OUR FINANCIAL GIVING Based on our 2018 Stewardship campaign, I report that as of February 1st, the total pledges in hand for 2019 are $5,619,760 – a very strong increase over the prior year amount of $5,163,757 on this same date. This growth was derived mainly from the generosity of our members, many of whom increased their pledge for 2019. Specifically, our average pledge increased by 12%, jumping from $4,764 to $5,334 for 2019. However, despite the push, our actual number of pledges decreased very slightly from 1,084 to 1,073.

Based on analysis of future needs, we: w fully funded our 2018 target of $186,000 to the School Transition Fund which supports the impact of ESD moving from our campus in 2020, and w funded an extra $70,000 to our Maintenance Fund for unplanned costs of our large campus infrastructure. There are additional funds held by the Foundation available upon grant approval to support certain unbudgeted needs.

In summary, our existing givers were enthusiastic and willing to increase their pledges for 2019. Looking forward, an open area for revenue growth is to reach out and add to our pledge rolls. Our 2019 priority of expenses addresses that goal. This is an exciting time at Saint Michael with opportunities to grow and expand our faith in Dallas and the world. The Committee is comprised of Stuart Brown, Janice Bywaters, Barry Hancock, Jeff Kilpatrick, Stacey Malcolmson, Bill McGannon, Andy McRoberts, Grady Schleier, Jim Smith, and Chris Wiley. AUDIT We received an unqualified (or “clean”) audit opinion for our 2017 financial statements, and the 2018 audit will be performed this spring. The church Audit Committee reports to the vestry and is independent of the staff, the Treasurer, and the Finance Committee. Its members in 2018 were Jay Lipscomb (Chairman), Eric Conner, Warren Houser, Darrel Rice and Chris Wiley. CONCLUSION We trust that this report conveys that the clergy, staff, and lay leaders at Saint Michael and all Angels are careful stewards of the church’s resources. Please know that your financial commitment is so very important. It is the key to Saint Michael’s financial strength and well-being, now and into the future. Respectfully submitted,

DONATIONS We encourage contributions to the Foundation from parishioners who want to give beyond their annual Stewardship pledge. Contributions may be made in support of unrestricted, temporarily restricted, or permanently restricted funds to be used in many different areas of church life. THE ALL ANGELS SOCIETY The All Angels Society is for all parishioners who would like to designate the church in their wills. Membership signals a parishioner’s intention to include the church in his or her estate planning. GRANTS Grants from the Foundation are consistent with priorities established by the Rector and the vestry. During 2018, more than $267,000 in grants were approved to support projects such as the music department, Godly Play curriculum, Youth Center A/V upgrades, North property re-zoning costs, divorce ministry, and SMAA's general operating budget.

2019—NEW FOCUS AND DIRECTION This year marks the beginning of a revitalized Foundation. Throughout its history, the Foundation has been mindful not to interfere with the church’s annual Stewardship campaigns. As a result, the Foundation has been a muted presence in our community. After re-examining our purpose, our priorities and philosophy have changed. Your trustees believe that it is possible, even necessary, for Saint Michael to support a robust, active, and visionary Foundation. This can be accomplished without diminishing each parishioner’s Christian obligation to give sacrificially through Stewardship. Foundation trustees and vestry members are working to establish guidelines to manage the funds we hope to receive from development of the north property. The Foundation’s goal is to treat these revenues as long-term assets to be deployed to support the ministries of the church on a far broader and more meaningful scale than could be possible from the church’s annual budget and the Foundation’s current holdings. As the Foundation’s assets grow, so will our ability to pursue new and meaningful projects that will improve communities and transform lives. As a new member of the Saint Michael and All Angels staff, you quickly learn that you need to be fast on your feet and ever alert to the many services, events, meetings, classes, and activities that ter take place constantly on our f ma ro o t n, E c campus. Besides being exceptional gifts to the SMAA congregation and community, each of these happenings require significant planning and careful execution, involving many details and processes. in the Youth areas, Coke Activities Room, and Saint Michael Chapel. Some of this was accomplished without a Director of Facilities or an assistant, so we often had to reach out for help. Fortunately, help was abundant. First and foremost, every member of the staff pitched in whenever needed or possible. Rob Baber and Fr. Greg Pickens, who had both led Operations previously, offered invaluable history, suggestions, and resources so that I could start learning the many idiosyncrasies of an aging infrastructure. Likewise, the Senior Warden, Margaret Spellings, and Sally Schupp, our Junior Warden, and Warren Houser, the Warden-at-Large provided guidance and perspective along with skilled leadership. Eric Conner and Matt Waller demonstrated that wardens never leave the service of the church. The assistance provided by the members of the Building and Grounds Committee, referenced in Sally’s report, were invaluable. Jack Rubarth and his Technology Committee—Tom Bowen, Dennis Disney, Kyle Moore, and Warren Houser—provided a skill set vital to making the right decisions for the church’s IT support and infrastructure. Our Treasurer, Kathy Kelley, and Rob Baber, Director of Finance, steered the most engaged and active Finance Committee I have ever had the privilege to work with. Frankly, from the Altar Guild and worship team to the Women of Saint Michael, HR Committee, leadership and staff of both Saint Michael Episcopal School and ESD Lower School and the all the Parish Ministry Council, the membership here is replete with unselfish, sacrificial, and skilled help. Eventually, we were able to add Nozar Daryapayma and Robert Butler to lead the facilities team toward a more responsive and qualitative direction. With their help and despite double-digit increases in our utilities and maintenance, they were able to keep the campus functioning while bringing their expenses 4% under budget.

he answered the call. Introducing a new look to the Sunday bulletins and Archangel, Steve and his staff of Ross Badgett and Travis Harvey have transformed both our digital and print messaging. During the year, the website was re-created to be more navigable and accessible, and a Resource Guide was introduced to help the membership find an entire semester’s worth of activity and information in one convenient place, while synthesizing with the website. The face of the church is always smiling from the reception desk as both Diane Hollie and Bonita Frederick continue to model hospitality to our guests and members. Behind the scenes, Rob Baber continues to provide prudent financial stewardship of your resources together with his team of Angelia Hunter, Cheryl Kaschak, and Darla Osterhout. Celise Stephenson, in addition to managing our members’ records, helps coordinate scheduling of all activities with other staff members. Finally, let me say that my wife and I have found such a warm welcome into this wonderful church community, and are so grateful for the help and hospitality we have received. It has been a very full year and I look forward to serving this church with pride and worshipping together with you during this special time in the life of Saint Michael and All Angels.

J unior Warden’s Report | Building and Grounds

In addition to our hardworking Operations staff, what keeps this complex facility going is the Building and Grounds Committee. This group of savvy, talented, committed, and creative problem solvers meets monthly and has been well chaired for many years by Tom Stewart. It was a delight to watch this group in action! In addition to Tom, members include Bill Pardoe, Warren Houser, John McFarland, Stephen Miller, Bob Patton, Marvin Thedford, Tom McConnell, Todd Howard, Blair Oden, John Stull, Chris Wiley, and John Morelock. Thank you very much, gentlemen!!!

Great things have happened in 2018 at Saint Michael in Building and Grounds! We began the year by hiring Keith Quarterman, our Executive Director of Operations who joined the staff in early February. Keith has very ably navigated a year filled ll y ard S ch W r u p p, with numerous challenges from our 2 0 1 8 Ju nio beloved but aging facility. Keith will address some of those issues in his report. Now let’s get on to all the good stuff.

It was a true honor and privilege to serve as Junior Warden this year, and I loved getting a glimpse of the numerous and amazing work that happens on our campus every day. I especially want to thank the Senior Warden, Margaret Spellings, who most capably led our parish with thorough attention to a myriad of details with great heart and good humor. She is a most gracious and very wise leader. As our parish begins 2019, I see fantastic leadership in place, wonderful energy throughout the parish, renewed purpose, and infinite possibilities for our future. I can’t wait to see what God has in store for us.

In January, many parishioners gathered in the narthex for the unveiling of Via Crucis, 14 beautiful bronze bas relief sculptures by Federico Severino. These incredible castings depict the stations of the cross, Christ’s journey from condemnation to crucifixion; and are on loan to our parish for several decades. Kudos to Mary Adair Dockery for her installation vision. In April, the splendid and thoroughly refurbished Angel Doors were reinstalled at the Chapel’s entrance as part of our Refresh campaign. In late August, the church’s interior and exterior signage was upgraded to help newcomers and parishioners find their way more easily. You may have also noticed a large sign facing Douglas Ave. which lists all of our service times.

Thankfully,

Sally Shiels Schupp Junior Warden

The most significant piece of our Refresh Campaign and of 2018 culminated in September with the reinstallation of the Creation Window in the sanctuary. Again, parishioners gathered to hear about the process from the Stanton family who meticulously restored and preserved this glorious piece of art. Bill Pardoe diligently oversaw this project, travelling back and forth to Waco numerous times to check the window’s progress as well as that of the Angel Doors. The final results are truly magnificent, and the work was on budget!

R e v.

2018 was a great year for our Worship and Liturgy ministries. The clergy and lay ministers officiated over 900 services this year – which couldn’t have happened without the 500-plus dedicated volunteers M of this ministry area. Children, p uss shi er, r o beginning as young as 3rd A s s o c ia t e f o r W grade, all the way to our most senior volunteers make each and every worship experience a holy moment. Saint Michael offers 15 contemporary and traditional worship services each week. The contemporary ministry continues to offer casual and contemporary services with practical sermons. In 2018, our ministry launched the Journey course, Pub Theology, An Evening of Hymns and Psalms Concert, and multiple sermon series. Each of these offerings has given new life to our congregation and continue to be exciting avenues for both new and long-time members to engage with one another. The Rev. Bob Johnston and Director of Contemporary Music Justin Brooks continue to grow this ministry with heartfelt passion and love for Jesus Christ. As our music program for traditional worship continues to grow, our choirs have seen substantial reconfiguration and expansion. Perhaps most significant among this growth is the establishment in fall of 2018 of our regular chorister program for boys and girls which, for now, includes grades 3-8. Our adults restructured themselves as one choir that sings weekly at the 11 a.m. Holy Eucharist in the church. Lastly, our Sunday evening worship offerings expanded to include choir: monthly Choral Evensong as part of the 5:30 p.m. service, and Choral Compline with the Compline Choir weekly at 8 p.m. Our music staff grew as well in 2018. We are pleased to have added Associate Director of Music and Organist Dr. Margaret Harper and Organ Scholar Owen Reid.

2018 Parish Meeting Report

Our liturgical support ministries include Altar Guild, Acolytes, Lectors, and Ushers. The Altar Guild continues to uphold a long-standing tradition of excellence when it comes to carefully preparing for all services, including baptisms, weddings, and funerals and maintaining the supplies necessary for the worship services. Caring for the sacred vessels, vestments, bread, wine, linens, candles, torches, and prayer stations in all the worship spaces is a true ministry. The Acolyte Corps continue to grow the ranks with training sessions throughout the year. In 2018, the acolytes honored Acolyte Master Tony Briggle for 45 years of service with the dedication of a new Altar Book for the church. The Lector Corps welcomed two new youth members and three adults to its cohort, hosted Tim Couch of the Dallas Storytelling Guild for a fall training workshop, and fervently cheered on the new microphones in the main sanctuary. And after nine years of service, Ed Ladd retired as Head Usher in August 2018. Gary Wall is the new Head Usher and Sean Jackson is the Assistant Head for Training and Recruiting. With this change in leadership, new initiatives included: broadcast text messaging and email system for usher communication, extensive training sessions throughout the year, and ongoing recruiting of new ushers. The ushers helped devise and implement new flow patterns for the church, which included a much smoother Christmas Eve seating plan. It is a great honor and privilege to be in worship with you, the people of Saint Michael.

Pastoral Care

lC

These three are most involved with the direction and strategy of our ministry. The experience and passion for ministry found in Marillyn, Terry, and Katherine allow the ministry leaders to focus on their particular areas with little distraction. I have the high honor to be counted as a member of this group at Saint Michael – there is no finer team.

r

The Pastoral Care teams were joyfully engaged in 2018, warming the hearts of our parishioners and guests. I am so grateful for the 17 ministries, the 25 ministry leaders, and especially the volunteers that make Pastoral Care possible in a parish of eg o P ic ast P kens r our size. , A ss o c i a te f o The heartbeat of any ministry is those volunteers who give of their time to call people who are housebound, take the bread and wine to those in the hospital, make phone calls, write notes, hand-knit prayer shawls, and much more. The ministry leaders are also there every step of the way; they are the ones who solve the problems so our volunteers can serve the Lord. Together, our volunteers and leaders have prayed for, written to, called, and visited 9,680 parishioners and friends of the parish who needed care. We also created an addition to our Grief Ministry at Saint Michael in 2018. Our own Rev. Dr. Hiltrude Nusser-Telfer is a superb priest with many years of dedicated work as a hospital chaplain. She has brought her knowledge and skills to bear in her new program entitled “Praying Our Goodbyes”. This offering was crafted specifically for those who would like the specific guidance of a trained counselor to ease the devastation caused by job loss, life change, or the loss of a loved one. Praying Our Goodbyes adds another element to a strong Grief Ministry in our parish.

There is so much more to the vision of Pastoral Care, but this amazing and vibrant ministry could not happen if it were not for the regular everyday Saint Michaelites who found a way to create time for helping others. We all know the value of church, family, work, and friends and I ask for your support by stepping into ministry with us. Once you do, I promise your walk with the Lord will move to a higher level.

The Rev. Greg Pickens Associate for Pastoral Care

Finally, I wish to thank three people: Katherine Bowen – Administrative Assistant for Pastoral Care, Terry Demler - our Lay Leader of Pastoral Care, and Marillyn Seeberger – Pastoral Care Communicator.

EYC (6-8th) from 4:30-6, worship and snacks for all youth from 6-6:30, and High School EYC (9-12th) from 6:30-8pm. Moving these to Sunday afternoon/evening seems to help families overcome the busyness of the midweek schedule.

Switching from at least three distinct Sunday morning offerings in the spring, to only one offering last fall, provided a unique opportunity and challenge for Adult Formation in 2018. I’m pleased to report that our Sunday mornings saw record participation as we began God’s Story together. After the incredible 72-hour live read-through of the full Bible, we have been blessed with excellent weekly presentations. In the fall of 2019 we will return to multiple Sunday morning adult offerings. After 3 years with us, last summer Julia Giles returned to her beloved city of Chicago. Tish and I are now assisted by Hannah Fisher, who stepped right in and is doing a great job supporting all of our Adult Formation efforts. We also hosted the Rev. Becca Stevens and the ladies of Thistle Farms as our distinguished speaker, part of the extraordinary Symposium on Human Trafficking SMAA hosted in October.

2018 was a banner year for our Formation programs at Saint Michael. We presented 75 students for Confirmation, welcomed our new Director of Children and Family Ministry Regan Wallace, and launched .E our God’s Story program for all rF r ic o f J. L i e ages. Additionally, our mid-week les, A ssociat offerings for adults continued to thrive, ably led by many committed volunteers. I’m especially proud of Gabrielle Ott and her team of Catechists for incorporating Godly Play into our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program so that we could offer God’s Story, Montessori style. I’m not sure any other church has ever brought those two curricula together (there are fiercely loyal camps for each!), and I see this as a model for how Saint Michael can lead in bringing things together that have been previously kept apart. Children’s ministry as a model for reconciliation, how about that! Our 2018 Shipwrecked-themed VBS was especially fun, and our St. Nick Nite was again a wonderful success. CFM and Youth families enjoyed partnering up with the Saint Michael Episcopal School for trunk-or-treat at Boo Bash. Many have commented that they have never experienced a Nativity pageant with such cuteness and delight. During Advent, the CFM team hosted a Night in Narnia, encouraging our families to read and share C.S. Lewis’ classic children’s novels as tools for faith formation.

If you would like to visit about or learn how to become more involved in any of our Formation programs, please let me know. I’m proud and grateful to help lead our incredible staff and volunteers in these very important ministries of SMAA.

Our Youth Ministry experienced growth in 2018. After a very successful mission trip to Alaska, our young people have done great service work in our community. We have officially moved Confirmation to 8th grade, and thus have provided an opportunity for all youth to participate in God’s Story this program year. The year of learning the narrative of the Bible will be foundational for our students. In November we added to our staff team Holli Royall, who brings with her the important perspective of being a mom in the local community. Our EYC took on a new format in the fall of 2018, offering Jr. High

We are committed to reaching out to answer God’s call to serve and share the Good News with our community. The Resurrection defines our Christian faith and provides us with the ultimate message of hope that we can share beyond our own walls:

AUSTIN STREET SHELTER Each month Saint Michael buys, prepares, delivers, and serves dinner for 450 people at the Austin Street Shelter. Under the leadership of Randy Rekerdres and George Baldwin, 1215 parishioners cook a full course homemade meatloaf dinner in our church kitchen. The following evening, ministry leaders and Rick Davis and an additional 25 parishioners serve the dinner. Annually, our youth serve for a month and often another ministry group takes the lead to serve.

VNA MEALS ON WHEELS Following the passing of ministry leader and consummate servant Mary Bartholow in July of 2018, our parish has worked tirelessly to provide a seamless transition. Ministry leaders Janie Richard, and the team of Ruthie Garrett and Byrd Teague, emerged to lead our 160 MOW drivers who deliver 14 routes. Our volunteers are also transitioning to using the VNA Meals on Wheels Volunteer Portal, and SMAA is one of 3 groups who are serving as early adopters of this new system. NORTH DALLAS SHARED MINISTRIES Saint Michael is one of 46 covenant congregations who have formed an interfaith community to provide charitable assistance to persons in need. Dane Hardy became our new SMAA ministry leader in 2018. We created a new logo for our food collections and added a blue jeans drive supported by our Saint Michael Youth department. THE GATHERING During 2018, Saint Michael provided a priest to celebrate the Holy Eucharist and parishioners served a homemade hot meal to 125 attendees, most of whom are home insecure, living in shelters or on the streets of downtown Dallas. Our ministry leaders are Corey and Lane Clark.

PROJECT MOSES Project Moses is a mission founded by parishioners to highlight the truths of human trafficking and share the light of Christ with its survivors. To support the mission, 3 areas of concentration have been established: formation/ education, advocacy, and outreach. A human trafficking symposium took place in October, Fighting For Freedom, with distinguished leaders in the field, including the Rev. Becca Stephens of Thistle Farms. JUBILEE PARK Through Saint Michael’s seven-member Connection Team, 400 parishioners contributed countless hours of time, energy, and money to the wide array of opportunities at Jubilee Park. AMISTAD IN BOLIVIA The Amistad Mission provides more than housing for the orphaned and abandoned children of Cochabamba, Bolivia. At both La Villa and Amistad For Families the children and the families receive the educational, medical, spiritual, and emotional support they need to overcome their often traumatic past and become healthy children and adults. SMAA continues their commitment to Amistad and we are excited to host the Amistad national board meeting in March of 2019. Mission trip dates are July 26 to August, 2019. Ministry leaders are Mark Demler and Kelly Reddell. TELA, HONDURAS Saint Michaelites are currently in the field as I write this, partnering with Espiritu Santo, the Episcopal Church and Day School, providing children with fluoride treatments, toothpaste and toothbrushes, fitting and distributing 200 pair of eyeglasses, serving over 300 school lunches, and sponsoring a Vacation Bible School for more than 450 children. Ministry leaders are George Baldwin and Chris Schupp. HONDURAS THREADS Honduras Threads supports embroidery cooperatives in rural Honduran villages to enable the women to earn money to help themselves and their families. SMAA supports them by collecting fabric donations and helping to market and sell handembroidered items. In addition, SMAA missioners travel to Tegucigalpa to work with the women in the five nearby co-ops. Our ministry leaders are Bill and M’Lou Bancroft.

In February 2018, the Saint Michael Parent Advisory held xe ic c ut M i ve their annual Auction to benefit D i r ec t o r o f S a i n t the school. With record proceeds from generous parents, grandparents, and corporate sponsors, the funds raised allowed SMES to incorporate a Science Explorers program into our curriculum. This program touches every child in our school with a different science lesson every two weeks. The Auction also provided a significant bonus to every member on our staff. We could not be more grateful to all who support SMES every day. ha

Saint Michael Episcopal School experienced a very successful 2018 with many exciting changes and happenings.

In April, I was called from curriculum coordinator and staff lead for the accreditation team to be the Interim Head of School. As I embraced the continued responsibilities of coordinating curriculum and leading the accreditation team, I was appointed Executive Director. I began to focus on areas such as staff appreciation, engagement with families and consistency across procedures. Summer 2018 was filled with six weeks of camp fun for children ages 2-6. Jacynda Griego ensured each week was a different theme that engaged our little friends. In August, we began the school year with 210 excited children, filling 19 different classes. Our staff of 38 professionals holds an incredible 450 years of combined teaching experience. We hosted all of our parents for a Back to School Night in the Garden Cloister. It was a huge success and we were so happy to have members from our Board of Directors present to mingle and serve wine to our guests. This is sure to become an annual event.

In October, SMES and SMAA held the 28th annual Barnyard Boo Bash and saw the return of Trunk or Treat. Children and families enjoyed their favorite events and activities at this fall festival followed by trick or treating. December 2018 marked the end of a multi-year accreditation process with the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools. We hosted the SAES onsite visiting team giving them the opportunity to dive into our self-study and observe all aspects of our school. We were proud to show them the growth of our school and all that we offer our students and families. Following the visit, SAES was particularly complimentary and impressed with the strong relationship between SMES and Saint Michael and All Angels Church. Throughout the year, we have continued to focus on special events such as Donuts for Dads, Muffins for Moms, Grandfriends’ Day, and our Family Thanksgiving Service. Our kindergarteners led a service project for Jubilee Park in coordination with SMAA’s I Believe in Angels. They made flyers and collected diapers for the young children in the program at Jubilee. As part of our school mission, we feel that service to others an important part of what we show and teach our children. As 2018 closes and we launch into 2019, Saint Michael Episcopal School once again looks forward to celebrating with our annual auction, a Mardi Gras Mambo on March 1. Many thanks to all of our parents, staff, church members, and leaders for your continued support of SMES!

Amy McMahan Executive Director of Saint Michael Episcopal School

We feel so fortunate to have The Reverend Dr. Eric Liles serving as our Chaplain this year. Father Eric has quickly become a special part of our school, leading our weekly chapels, visiting classrooms, and greeting our families in the mornings.

The Women of Saint Michael is comprised of all the women who are members of our parish. Our purpose is to “be the extension of Christ’s Kingdom by uniting the women of the parish in a program of worship, study, service, fellowship, and leading them into the service for the Church, in the parish, the community, the diocese, the nation, and the world.” For over 72 years WOSM has been a joyful, dynamic, and energetic group of women of all ages who join together in fellowship, worship, and service. Our programming and events this year are built around Matthew 19:26 – with God all things are possible. This verse truly captures the heart of what makes WOSM such a unique and special group. • The St. Michael’s Woman’s Exchange is celebrating its 60th Anniversary with a cocktail reception on February 26th. With its more than 150 volunteers, SMWE has had a great year and will be able to return a significant dollar amount to outreach through the WOSM Gifts Committee. Stay tuned for the big announcement in May. • This Spring, the members of the Gifts Committee will research and carefully review grant requests and award support to Dallas agencies fighting poverty in our community and to Episcopal organizations doing good work locally, nationally, and internationally. • The Fall and Winter Speakers Series was a tremendous success. We welcomed the Rev. Samira Izadi Page from Gateway of Grace in September to a completely full Parish Hall. In October, Dr. Theodore Price helped us better understand the Opioid Crisis and research that is being done to help overcome this epidemic. Our November luncheon featured Joanne Bondy of Stocks & Bondy, who inspired us to eat more mindfully and locally. We ended our series with an incredible evening event and reception with our 2nd annual interfaith panel comprised of The Rev. Dr. Chris Girata, Rabbi Nancy Kasten, and Imam Omar 2018 Parish Meeting Report

Suleiman moderated by The Rev. Amy Heller. We had over 700 attendees of all faiths in the church. Thank you to all the parishioners who welcomed and made our guests feel comfortable. Thanks also to our luncheon season subscribers and underwriters who made all the programs possible. • The Parish Party was held Friday, February 1 at the Frontiers of Flight Museum and featured Emerald City’s Limelight Band. We had record attendance with over 700 parishioners and a very successful auction. • On March 2, the WOSM will partner with Jubilee for their Mother Daughter Tea. • On Friday, April 12, the Women of Saint Michael will host the third annual WOSM Day of Service at Jubilee Park and Community Center. All WOSM are invited as we work together at several stations throughout Jubilee for a morning of volunteering together as one ministry. • The Women of Saint Michael will wrap up a wonderful year with the annual spring luncheon featuring New York Times Bestselling Author, Melanie Shankle. The date of the luncheon is Wednesday, May 15th, 2019. Few efforts in the history of Dallas can match the positive change created by the St. Michael’s Woman’s Exchange. For sixty years, many dedicated women have donated their time and talents to the Exchange. The profits from the Exchange combined with the bi-annual Parish Party and our Special Events have enabled the Women of Saint Michael to give over $9 million to non-profit charities since 1958. This rich tradition continues. And few organizations in the history of Saint Michael and All Angels can match the energy, enthusiasm, and passion of the Women of Saint Michael and its members, for whom we are all grateful.
