SAINT MICHAEL & ALL ANGELS EPISCOPAL CHURCH HOLY EUCHARIST: RITE II 11:00 A.M. August 21, 2022 SOWELCOMENG PRAISE TO THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY Praise to the Lord Who o'er all things so wondrously reigneth Shelters thee under His wings Yea, so gently sustaineth Hast thou not seen how thy desires e'er have been Granted in what He ordaineth Praise to the Lord Who doth prosper thy work and defend thee Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee Ponder anew what the Almighty can do If with His love He befriend thee Praise to the Lord, O let all that is in me adore Him All that hath life and breath Come now with praises before Him Let the ‘Amen' sound from His people again Gladly forever adore Him ForeverForever OPENING ACCLAMATION Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.
If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday. The LORD will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail. Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in. If you refrain from trampling the sabbath, from pursuing your own interests on my holy day; if you call the sabbath a delight and the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, serving your own interests, or pursuing your own affairs; then you shall take delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride upon the heights of the earth; I will feed you with the heritage of your ancestor Jacob, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
COLLECT OF THE DAY
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE LESSON ISAIAH 58:9b-14
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
2 Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

SERMON THE REVEREND Canon Rene Somodevilla NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
Now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your ailment.” When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, “There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day.” But the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?” When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing.
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Christ.
Prayers of the People: Form VI In peace, we pray to you, Lord God.
For all people in their daily life and work; For our families, friends, and neighbors, and for those who are alone.
5 he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
For this community, the nation, and the world; For all who work for justice, freedom, and peace. For the just and proper use of your creation; For the victims of hunger, fear, injustice, and oppression. For all who are in danger, sorrow, or any kind of trouble; For those who minister to the sick, the friendless, and the needy. For the peace and unity of the Church of God; For all who proclaim the Gospel, and all who seek the Truth.
For the special needs and concerns of this congregation. Hear us Lord; For your mercy is great. We thank you, Lord, for all the blessings of this life. We will exalt you, O God our King; And praise your Name for ever and ever. We pray for all who have died, that they may have a place in your eternal kingdom. Lord, let your loving kindness be upon them; Who put their trust in you.
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

OFFERTORY SONG I’VE ALWAYS LOVED YOU I don't know how to explain it But I know that words will hardly do Miracles with signs and wonders Aren't enough for Me to prove to you
8
Don't you know I've always loved you Even before there was time Though you turn away I'll tell you still Don't you know I've always loved you And I always will Greater love has not a man Than the one who gives his life to prove That he would do anything And that's what I'm gonna do for you
Don't you know I've always loved you Even before there was time Though you turn away I'll tell you still Don't you know I've always loved you And I always will COMMUNION RITE II PRAYER A The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
[ Here the Celebrant includes a proper preface ] Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
9 heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
“And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,”
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving.
10 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. COMMUNION SONG BUILD MY LIFE

This year, we adjust how we offer the special Sunday night service of Choral Compline. We will now have this meditative, candlelit service only 5 times a year for in person attendance. For each in-person service, we’ll have candle light, a priest officiant, processions, incense, and a reception following. Our Choral Compline lasts just under 30 minutes and is entirely sung—no spoken words or musical instruments. It’s a wonderful way to conclude the weekend in peace and quiet. Mark your calendar and invite someone who doesn’t regularly go to church!
