FROM THE RECTOR

We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today! We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on the opposite page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

Today we celebrate the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels. This year, our celebration points to a vision of the future that will deepen our impact in the world. As we launch a new chapter of our life together, I ask that you join us in prayer for the wisdom and courage to be the people God calls us to be, and to do so together.

In addition to praying together, I invite you to learn together every week. I encourage you to plug in to the excellent learning opportunities for you and those you love, as well as opportunities to serve together that can be found in the back of this bulletin. Praying, learning, serving, and giving together helps us become more of who God created us to be. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

SONG CAVERNS

Come, let us sing to the Lord; let us shout for joy

To the Rock of our saving help; come.

Come with thanksgiving and psalms; let us raise our voice

To the Source of our present help; come.

For the Lord is a great God;

Mighty King over all gods.

In his hands are the caverns of the earth.

Come, let us bow to the floor, let us bend our knee

To the will of our Maker Lord; come.

For the Lord is a great God;

Mighty King over all gods. In his hands are the caverns of the earth, And the heights of the hills are his, And the depths of the seas are his, With his hands he has formed the whole wide world.

He is our God, we are the people of his land and the sheep of his hand. He is our God, we are the people of his land and the sheep of his hand.

He is our God, we are the people of his land and the sheep of his hand. Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

For the Lord is a great God; Mighty King over all gods. In his hands are the caverns of the earth, And the heights of the hills are his, And the depths of the seas are his, With his hands he has formed the whole wide world.

OPENING ACCLAMATION

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LESSON GENESIS 28:10-17

Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under

2

his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!” And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Come, Holy Spirit, heav'nly Dove, with all Thy quickening powers; kindle a flame of sacred love in these cold hearts of ours.

Look, how we grovel here below, Fond of these earthly toys; Our souls, how heavily they go, To reach eternal joys.

In vain we tune our formal songs, In vain we strive to rise; Hosannas languish on our tongues, And our devotion dies.

Father, and shall we ever live

At this poor dying rate, Our love so faint, so cold to Thee, And Thine to us so great?

3
SONG COME, HOLY SPIRIT, HEAV'NLY DOVE

Come, Holy Spirit, heav'nly Dove, with all Thy quickening powers; kindle a flame of sacred love in these cold hearts of ours.

THE GOSPEL JOHN 1:47-51

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint John. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Christ.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

4
SERMON THE REV. DR. ANDREW GROSSO NICENE CREED

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE: FORM III

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people.

We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

5

Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight.

Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress.

Give to the departed eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them.

We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.

CONCLUDING COLLECT

Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CONFESSION

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

THE PEACE

The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

OFFERTORY SENTENCE

Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God.

OFFERTORY SONG

War broke out in heaven

Michael and his angels fought against the dragon

The dragon and his angels fought back but they were defeated and there was no longer any place for them in heaven

The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world he was thrown down to the earth, to the earth and his angels were thrown down with him, down with him

Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah

They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb

By the witness of their word Loved not their lives even unto death

Rejoice then you heavens

And all those who dwell in them

But woe to the earth

And the sea, for the devil has come down to you

With great wrath

Because he knows his time is short

7
THE BALLAD OF SAINT MICHAEL

Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah

They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb By the witness of their word

Loved not their lives even unto death

But woe to the earth and the seas For the devil has come down to you. With great wrath because He knows his time is short, time is short.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

[ Here the Celebrant includes a proper preface ]

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

8
The Ballad of Saint Michael Words and music by Justin Brooks (c) 2019 Elgie Street Music (ASCAP) COMMUNION RITE II PRAYER B

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with [ and] all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

“And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,”

9

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;

Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

COMMUNION SONG GUIDE ME, O MY GREAT REDEEMER

Guide me, O my great Redeemer, pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but you are mighty; hold me with your powerful hand. Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, feed me now and evermore, feed me now and evermore.

Open now the crystal fountain, where the healing waters flow. Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through. Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,

10

ever be my strength and shield, ever be my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside. Death of death, and hell's Destruction, land me safe on Canaan's side.

Songs of praises, songs of praises I will ever sing to you, I will sing to you.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE BLESSING

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

CLOSING CHORUS LAST VERSE OF GUIDE ME O MY GREAT REDEEMER

When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside. Death of death, and hell's Destruction, land me safe on Canaan's side.

Songs of praises, songs of praises I will ever sing to you, I will sing to you.

is is a unique time in Saint Michael’s history—a time that urges us to act boldly! We are pleased to launch Building our Future, a historic capital campaign focused in three parts: Uniting our Community, Reinvigorating our Campus, and Investing in Education. Join us as we prepare Saint Michael to make and even greater impact in the future, extending the love of Christ to all.

Exceeding this goal will allow us to repair the beautiful stained glass windows in the Church, add a meditation garden adjacent to our exterior columbaria, elevate audio visual capabilities, and address increased construction costs.
