Happy Easter! We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

I encourage you to continue your discipleship commitment throughout this Easter season. Our theme this Easter is “The Great Promise.” The celebration of Easter is a renewal of the promise that God’s kingdom is at hand. We are part of God’s kingdom work, and every time we choose to love, we draw closer to the fullness of that promise. Last Monday, we launched the Easter season series of Weekday Meditations, and I encourage you to make these special meditations part of your weekday spiritual discipline. Please take a look at our Sunday News for upcoming special events and community moments, including those hosted by the Women and Men of Saint Michael, and register today!

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

The flowers adorning the altar are given to the glory of God and in thanksgiving for the marriage of Caroline Cyrier and Michael Bullard.

In his keyboard music, Georg Böhm demonstrates a broad interest in various musical genres, skillfully integrating them into an eclectic yet cohesive personal style. His works are improvisatory in character, marked by clear harmonic direction and subtle melodic writing.

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”

Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.” Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

The Nicene Creed (standing)

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

During the season of Easter, we omit the Confession as a way of celebrating Christ’s triumph over sin and the assurance of salvation and new life for all who are joined with him in his death and resurrection.

During the season of Easter, we return to the practice of the early church and stand during the Prayer of Consecration and the Post-Communion Prayer. You may also stand to receive Communion at the altar rail.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated. All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

“Even When He is Silent” was commissioned in 2011 by the St. Olaf Festival in Trondheim, Norway. Its three simple lines were discovered on a concentration camp wall after World War II. The piece opens with a quiet, prayerful melody, builds to an earnest climax, and returns to an introspective ending. Kim André Arnesen employs dissonance to express longing and uses a wide dynamic range to depict the inner struggle to maintain faith amid darkness.

Louis Couperin (1626–1661) served as the organist at Paris’s Church of St. Gervais and as a court musician. He quickly emerged as one of the city’s most prominent musicians—excelling as a harpsichordist, organist, and violist— though his career was cut short by his untimely death at 35. Originally written for the harpsichord, the “Chaconne in G Minor” also works well on the organ.
