The Word of God Felix Mendelssohn’s six “Organ Sonatas, Opus 65” were published in 1845. His biographer, Eric Werner, wrote, “Next to Bach’s works, Mendelssohn’s ‘Organ Sonatas’ belong to the required repertory of all organists.” The sonatas were commissioned as a “set of voluntaries” by the English publishers Coventry and Hollier in 1844. In response to the commission, Mendelssohn at first drafted seven individual voluntaries, but then determined to extend and regroup them into a set of six sonatas, meaning by this not pieces in classical sonata form, but using the word as it had been used by Bach, for a collection or suite of varying pieces.

Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lesson Isaiah 45:1-7 (seated) Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him—and the gates shall not be closed: I will go before you and level the mountains, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I surname you, though you do not know me. I am the LORD, and there is no other; besides me there is no god. I arm you, though you do not know me, so that they may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is no one besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. Mary Lightfoot is an American conductor, composer, and choir clinician in the United States and Canada. The Pharisees went and plotted to entrap Jesus in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, “Whose head is this, and whose title?” They answered, “The emperor’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Holy Communion Offertory Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir) Rejoice in the Lord

David Bednall

Rejoice, in the Lord, O ye righteous; for it becometh well the just to be thankful. Praise the Lord with harp; sing praises unto him with the lute, and instrument of ten strings.

This fast and festive setting of Psalm 33 moves along in a joyful dance. After an exuberant opening, a lively organ passage leads into a beautiful moment of stillness in the choir, unaccompanied, creating an effective contrast before an emphatic closing statement of rejoicing.

Sing unto the Lord a new song; sing praises lustily unto him with a good courage. For the word of the Lord is true; and all his works are faithful. He loveth righteousness and judgement; the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord. - Psalm 33 Presentation Hymn (standing, sung by all) “Praise God, from whom all blessings flow”

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer B (standing) Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: The Sanctus and Benedictus (standing, sung by all) “Holy, holy, holy, Lord” Robert Powell

Hymn S 129

Please kneel as you are able We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have

9

made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

Therefore, according to his command, O Father, All

We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Michael and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

10

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread (sung by all) “Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia” David Hurd

Hymn S 154

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

Communion Motet (sung by the Saint Michael Choir) Verleih’ uns Frieden

Felix Mendelssohn Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich, Herr Gott, zu unsern Zeiten. Es ist doch ja kein andrer nicht, der für uns könnte streiten, denn du, unser Gott, alleine.

Lord, in thy mercy grant us peace Throughout all generations; Thou art alone our sword and shield, Lord who dost guide the nations. Defend us, O God, we pray thee. - Martin Luther

Apart from being one of the most acclaimed composers of his generation, Mendelssohn forever changed Western classical music in initiating a renewed interest in the music of J.S. Bach. Mendelssohn set several German Lutheran chorales as choral pieces, including today’s motet in 1831. A single verse of the chorale is set first for one voice, then two, then four. Mendelssohn’s mastery of multi-voiced writing is on display as much as his ability to write beautiful, stirring phrases with the simplest of melodies and harmonies.

The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all) Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Blessing (kneeling) The Dismissal (standing) Minister People

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.

American composer and organist Carson Cooman (b. 1982) is in continual demand for new commissions, and his music has been performed worldwide. “Exaltations” was commissioned by The Commission Project for James and Marilyn Biery, then organists at the Cathedral of St. Paul, Minnesota. The work is in three movements, each taking its extra-musical inspiration from a different biblical passage dealing with “exaltation.” Today’s postlude was inspired by Psalm 34:3, “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.”

Annual Giving Campaign Giving to our annual stewardship campaign, Building the Kingdom, is an essential practice that supports Saint Michael’s shared mission and ministry, including our growing staff, campus, and programs. While essential to our operations, giving annually is an incredibly important spiritual discipline. An annual gift represents our stewardship of the time, talents, and treasures that God gives freely to each one of us. Giving back to God’s work through Saint Michael is a sign of gratitude and a key part of deepening our discipleship identity. It’s our turn to invest in our future. As you evaluate your annual stewardship gift, we also ask you to please join us in Building our Future.
