We are in an extraordinary period in the great story of Christianity. In the last few decades, our world has reached a tipping point away from the social anchor of religious identity. Gone are the days when social expectations compelled most people into church communities. Gone are the days when religious groups commanded respect and authority just by their very existence. Instead, we have entered a new reality where those who are truly active in church communities are the exception, not the rule. That presents a challenge that has never before confronted Christian Americans, and one that will take special attention. In the coming years, we will be challenged to put that faithfulness and vision into practice, telling the story of Jesus in new ways and inviting countless un-churched and re-churched neighbors to join us on the way. We cannot do this on our own, but together, and with Christ, all things are possible. What has been the most inspiring part of the journey for me is the amazing and boundless energy I have seen from literally hundreds of Saint Michaelites who are ready to jump into new and renewed ministries! At our Annual Parish Meeting, I discussed the work that has been done and the work that continues to be done by your leadership. I learned years ago that I can never repeat myself enough, so a summarized look at the year ahead here in the Archangel is a good idea. Over the past few months, the Saint Michael leadership has taken on some new initiatives

Drive Launched to Refresh, Renew, Revive Worship Spaces At the Annual Meeting the Rector announced a bold new plan to significantly enhance the church’s primary worship spaces. He said several parishioners have agreed to underwrite the repair of the Creation Window in the church and challenged the parish to donate the remaining funds needed to complete the “Refresh, Renew, Revive” program. The Rev. Girata said the program includes, in addition to the Creation Window, new pew cushions and kneelers, enhanced sound and video capabilities, and side pews for acolytes and chalice bearers in the church. In Parish Hall the program calls for reorienting the room to create a worship center along the west wall with draping, a stage and lighting, installing video screens, and enhancing the sound capabilities for our modern worship services. He pointed out that the improvements also will make the Parish Hall a better venue for other church meetings and gatherings. The goal is to raise $300,000 in addition to the funds already pledged to repair the Creation window. Donations to fund the rest of the program can be made online at www.saintmichael.org/refresh, or by contacting Caroline Marak at cmarak@saintmichael. org. Watch the Rector describe the Refresh, Renew, Revive program online at www.saintmichael. org/refresh The Parish Hall refresh will create enhanced worship space using technology, lighting and drapes

Lenten Retreat with Brother James Koester, SSJE
Monastic Wisdom For Everyday Living
Confession: Cleaning the Spiritual Closet There is an internal clock within us that tells us Spring is time to clean out our closets. Preparing to make the Sacrament of Confession is like cleaning out our spiritual closets. In Confession, or Reconciliation, we pray with a priest, name our sins and repent of them, and are granted Mary Lessmann, Associate absolution. While we make a for Spiritual Growth general confession each week during the worship service, I’ve found that in preparing for and making a private confession I come away feeling as if a great weight has been lifted from me. The rite of Reconciliation can be found on page 447 in our Book of Common Prayer. An excellent resource for preparation is Martin L. Smith’s Reconciliation: Preparing for Confession in the Episcopal Church. Even if you decide not to make your confession with a priest during Lent, this book will provide a wonderful guide for a thoughtful reflection on those aspects of ourselves and our lives—both present and past—that are in need of offering up for God’s healing and forgiveness. If you would like to schedule private confession as part of your Lenten discipline – or anytime, please contact any of the priests on staff at Saint Michael. 2

Words like Balance, Silence, Enclosure are familiar to us in our everyday speech, but in the monastic tradition they have a much deeper meaning. This Lenten Retreat will be an opportunity to go deeper into our spiritual lives to discover what wisdom we can glean from the monastic tradition that might help us as we navigate our everyday lives. Brother James Koester serves as the Superior of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist in Cambridge, Massachusetts. RSVP online at saintmichael.org/retreats.

Annual Parish Meeting Rector Outlines Vision of Saint Michael: The Church of the Future For details of the Rector’s vision see his article on page one of the Archangel and/or view his Annual Meeting presentation online at www.saintmichael.org. The Rector Chris Girata painted a picture of Saint Michael and All Angels becoming “The Church of the Future” at the Annual Parish Meeting Sunday, February 26. His vision included “growing people,” investing in the worship experience, and engaging parishioners beyond Sundays. “Worship at Saint Michael is at the foundation of growth,” the Rector said. In the coming months the church will begin focusing our worship experience on two tracks: a traditional track utilizing the Rite I and Rite II liturgies, and a modern track more like today’s Celebration and Discovery Mass services. “It is important,” he said, “that visitors and parishioners know what to expect when they come to Saint Michael and can chose the worship that best fits their spiritual needs.”
The Rector reported that we will invest more in the worship experience both in the ways we engage every member of our parish, “especially our children and families,” and refreshing and renewing our worship spaces. He announced plans to make necessary repairs to the Church’s “Creation Window” behind the choir loft and refresh the church with new pew cushions and improved lighting and sound. The Parish Hall, where the Celebration service is held, will be reoriented with video screens, improved sound, and lighting.
The Rector said several families have agreed to fund the repairs to the “Creation Window” and challenged the congregation to match those gifts to finance the completion of the “Refresh, Renew, and Revive” program.

Annual Parish Meeting Senior Warden Updates Campus Planning Effort and Bids Farewell
Junior Warden Highlights Building and Grounds Activities in 2016 Junior Warden Kay Whelan said the actions of the Building and Grounds Committee and the church’s facilities staff – while perhaps lackluster visually -- have significantly improved the building and the campus this past year. She said the detailed analysis of the Facilities Audit resulted in immediate resolution of issues deemed life-safety items, and prioritization of other recommendations.
Senior Warden Matt Waller bid the parish farewell at the Annual Meeting as he retired from the Vestry and updated the congregation on the church’s Campus Master Plan. Waller told the gathering, “As a parish in 2016…we found and called Chris Girata to be our eighth Rector of Saint Michael and All Angels…it became apparent that the Lord had led us to the right person…” He praised the Rector Search and Transition Committee for its “bold and inspired leadership” and the program initiated by the New Rector Welcome Committee to introduce The Rev. Girata and his family to Saint Michael and Dallas. Waller said the church had received the report of Dallas’ Northwest Highway/Preston Center Task Force and was in “conversations with our development partners and parish leadership about how to best incorporate and respect those recommendations.” He said that the new Rector’s thoughts and vision are being incorporated into the campus planning program. The parish will get a report later this spring as the planning process moves forward. Waller, who has served in various leadership capacities including head of the Finance Committee and Treasurer, has been Senior Warden for the past two years. With the arrival of the new Rector he is stepping down from the Vestry. The final two years of his term will be filled by Sally Schupp, a lifelong member of the church, a former Vestry member, and active leader in the Mission and Outreach Ministry.
Significant projects completed during the year were highlighted in Whelan’s report: •
The installation of new security doors in the building’s north wing requested by Saint Michael Episcopal School and the Episcopal School of Dallas. The installations she said, “have been well received by parents, parishioners, and staff…as a responsible approach to insuring the safety of the children.”
•
The installation of weatherproof café lighting in the Garden Cloister to better utilize the garden during evenings. She said the new lighting would be installed in March. 5

Pastoral Care The Hard Part of Pastoral Care at Saint Michael For over five years, I have served the people of Saint Michael and it has been wonderful. We have such passion in this church for reaching out, for supporting, for touching the lives of those who would allow others to minister to them. Here is the hard part of Pastoral Care at Saint Michael and All Angels. Together, the people of this parish very likely represent one of the larger gatherings of highly educated, Type A people in this part of the country. This is an astonishing thing to contemplate and any list of Saint Michael Kingdom accomplishments makes it obvious that our parish, our diocese, and our city benefits from the mix of our own - very educated and Type A parishioners; the energy and ideas flowing between these walls is palpable. But there is another side to this. I very gently offer that it is often the highly educated and Type A people who do so much for the Kingdom of God but will not or cannot allow themselves to be the recipient of ministry. I offer to you that to receive ministry is not weakness. In fact, the Church teaches the very opposite – our Lord Jesus came to offer His saving health and help to every one of God’s people. We all, in fact, are the recipients of the ministry of God’s only Son, Jesus. By all means, investigate everything that Pastoral Care has to offer; get involved, help others, put your faith to action in a way that glorifies God in the highest; and at the same time, allow the warmth of Saint Michael Pastoral Care to embrace you. To care for others and to receive care are both acts of worship.

Bishop Sumner Speaks at Prayer Ministry Meeting Dallas Bishop George Sumner met with Saint Michael’s Prayer Ministry on February 16. He stressed the importance of prayer and its effects on evangelism in the church. The Bishop said more prayer and more evangelism is the direction he intends for the Dallas Diocese. The Prayer Ministry’s March meeting has been moved to Friday, March 3 so that it can take advantage of Br. James Koester’s Lenten visit. Br. Koester is Superior of the Society of St. John the Evangelist and will conduct the church Lenten Retreat the next day. Br. Koester will talk with the Pray group about “Prayer as the Engine of Lent.”

Lay Eucharistic Visitors Serve the Homebound The Lay Eucharistic Visitor Ministry takes communion from our church on Sundays to parishioners who are physically unable to attend church. We go to homes, extended care facilities and hospitals. The visits are made based on calls to the church office requesting this service or clergy requests. The steps to becoming a volunteer in the LEV Ministry are: • Visit with the Pastoral Care priest to determine if this is your calling • Complete the Episcopal “Safe Church” training (now online) • Submit information for a background check • Make shadow visits with current LEV’s • Write a note requesting licensing from the bishop for this ministry Contact the Reverend Greg Pickens, gpickens@saintmichael. org

Children and Family Ministry Kids and Parents Stock the Shelves at North Dallas Shared Ministries
Barnyard Bash Set for April 30 Several children and parents of the Children and Family Ministry spent several hours Sunday, February 19 stocking the shelves of North Dallas Shared Ministries. The kids had been collecting non-perishable food items in their Sunday School classes for several weeks. On that Sunday, they got their parents and packed up the food, delivered it to North Dallas Shared Ministries, and together they sorted the food and stocked the shelves.
Barnyard Bash, benefiting the Saint Michael Episcopal School, will feature new rides, adventures, and thrills for the entire family – especially the youngsters. Come rain or shine, the Bash will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 Sunday, April 30. This year’s fun activities will include a horse-drawn hayride, mechanical bull, Velcro wall, tractor slide, and goodies from the Saint Michael’s Farmers Market. Mr. Donavan will be in charge of fun games and sports events, and you’ll have dinner choices from The Hamburger Man and Taco Taxi. Barnyard Bash chair Jourdy Wallace says, “No matter what the age, everyone will have a great time for a great cause…our Saint Michael Episcopal School.” Tickets, underwriting, and volunteering opportunities are available online at www.smesdallas.org/barnyardbash

For Your Information focused on streamlining our efforts to maximize our ministry. I am committed to growth, and whenever I’ve talked about growth, the energy and support from our leadership has been apparent. Growth includes members and ministry. To grow in members, we must begin to invite our neighbors to join us, and when we bring them to church, help support their integration and connection to our community. What will drive growth will be meeting people where they are and helping them grow beyond that. You’ve likely heard me say that God loves every person, no exceptions, but that God loves us enough not to leave us where we are. That challenge to grow in our own discipleship extends to multiple areas, including worship, formation, and ministry. Formation is critical to our growth, and our formation ministries have plenty of room to grow, too. It is clear to me that we have a great opportunity to invest in our formation programs for all ages, but especially for our young people. In addition to our church formation programs for children and youth, we are also moving forward in our special relationship with the Saint Michael Episcopal School. We are so very blessed to have a fantastic partner in educating children in our community. Their passion and love for the youngest among us will continue to be a source of inspiration, as well as a way for us to invite new members into our church family. I am excited about the future growth of Saint Michael Episcopal School and know that their excellence in early childhood education will continue to be a model for other church schools around the country. Of course we are always looking to help deepen the relationships of current members. In 2016, we began to lay the groundwork for exciting new ministries that focus on intimate and intentional relationship building. Some of those initiatives will pair individuals to develop what I like to call “holy friendships,” the people who help form us in our Christian discipleship. We have also begun the formation of an expanded integration ministry that will shepherd people into deeper connections through small groups of all kinds. In the fall, we convened the leadership of all our ministry groups, including guilds and committees, as the new Parish Ministry Council. This body of leaders, numbering nearly 200, will gather semi-annually to discuss strategic initiatives so that the parish moves with more synchronicity. The new organizational structure of ministry groups will help reduce
redundancy and identify opportunities for growth. The structure will also begin to mirror a new organizational structure on the church staff. This design with allow the work of our volunteer leadership to sync with the work of our staff to achieve more productivity and institutional memory over time. Finally, and most importantly, the work we do is grounded in our relationship with God in Christ, and that relationship is renewed and strengthened through our worship. Worship is the root of our identity as Anglican Christians and remains absolutely integral to our Saint Michael community. In 2016, we evaluated ways in which we can increase our investment in worship and have already begun to execute those plans. During 2017, you will see those plans come to fruition in exciting ways. We have been a paragon of worship excellence, and I want to make sure we remain a leader in both tradition and creativity. The year ahead is full of excitement and I look forward to taking the journey with you!
