With sadness and regret we announce the death of The Rev. George “Neal” Hern on Wednesday, February 7 following a lengthy illness. The Rev. Hern served as a priest associate for Pastoral Care at Saint Michael since 2001. Funeral arrangements are pending. “May the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.” Lent Meditation Booklets Available. Lenten Meditation booklets with daily reflections written by parishioners, clergy, and staff are available at several locations at the church. The meditations are also on the church website at www.saintmichael.org. Neighborhood Nights Scheduled Next Sunday Evening. Several east Dallas neighborhoods will get together next Sunday evening, March 19, for the next Neighborhood Night. The event will be at the home of Chandler and Jeff Winslow, 9735 Robin Hill Circle for parishioners living in the Lake Highlands, White Rock Lake, Lakewood, and M Streets areas. The only agenda is getting to know neighbors that go to Saint Michael. It’s a great opportunity to introduce a friend or neighbor to the church. RSVP to www.saintmichael.org/neighborhood-nights. POWER in the BLOOD: The Parish Spring Blood Drive, in partnership with the American Red Cross, is next Sunday, March 19 from 8:00 to 1:00 in the ESD Library. Living With Grief. Connie Webb, a financial planner and widow of The Rev. Jim Webb, discusses “The Practical Consequences of Loss” in this week’s Living With Grief seminar, which explores the practical and emotional experiences that come with the loss of a loved one. The class meets today at 10:00 in the Parlor. The Forum to Study Human Trafficking: Modern Slavery. For the next three weeks, the Forum Sunday School class will look at the impacts of Human Trafficking, today’s form of slavery. Bill Bernstein, co-director of Mosaic Family Services, will open the class today at 10:00 in Saint Michael Chapel. Next week, FBI Special Agent David Klimek will lead the class, followed by George Lynch, CEO of Traffick 911 on March 26. Spring Break Schedule Changes. There will be no Disciples Confirmation Class this Sunday, and LiveWIRE will not meet Wednesday evening. Edge Mission Trip Registration is Open. Registration is open for the April 21 – 23 Edge (4th and 5th grade) Mission Trip to the World Hunger Relief Farm near Waco. The cost is $200 per child. After April 1 the cost is $250. Register at www. saintmichael.org/children/theedge. PT Cruisers to Tour Holocaust Museum Thursday. Touring the downtown Dallas Holocaust Museum is the next trip on the PT Cruisers schedule this Thursday, March 16. The bus leaves the church at 9:30. A new initiative, Refresh – Renew – Revive, has been launched to enhance our worship spaces this spring. A gift of $300,000 from several parishioners will be used to restore and refresh the “Creation Window” in the church, which is badly in need of repairs. Another $300,000, to be raised by the congregation, will be used for enhanced lighting and audio/visual capabilities, new pew cushions, kneelers, hymnals, and prayer books in the church; and in the Parish Hall for creating a proper worship space for the Celebration service, which will include reorienting the room, installing wall curtains, staging, lighting, audio, and video systems. A brochure explaining in detail the Refresh – Renew – Revive initiative and how to participate is available in the pews and on tables throughout the church. Be a part of the first Women of Saint Michael’s Day-of-Service Friday, April 7 at Jubilee Park and Community Center. From 9:00 to 12:00 the women will engage in gardening, working with children at Davids’ Place and Jeanie’s Place, conducting Senior Bingo, or decorating for the Jubilee Health Fair. Book Buddies is a one-on-one reading/mentoring program for O.M. Roberts 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students having challenges with reading. Jubilee Mother-Daughter Tea to be March 25: Volunteers Needed. Women’s History Month will be celebrated at Jubilee Park’s Annual Mother-Daughter Tea at the Community Center on Saturday, March 25 from 11:30 – 2:30. Vanderbilt University’s Dr. AmyJill Levine will conclude her Distinguished Lecture trilogy at Saint Michael on April 1 & 2 addressing “Let Us Go Forth Into the World.” Her Saturday lectures beginning at 9:00 in the Coke Activities Room will discuss “When We Leave Home: Abraham and Sarah” and “When Worlds Collide: Joshua and Rahab.” Register for the Saturday sessions ($10) at www.saintmichael.org/dls. Dr. Levine’s Sunday April 2 Distinguished Lecture, “When the World is Next Door,” will be at 10:00 in the Saint Michael Chapel. Listening Session Planned for Organist/Choirmaster Search. The Organist/ Choirmaster Search Committee has scheduled a Listening Session for Sunday, March 26 at 10:00 in the Theater. The Rector will discuss his vision for the church’s music program, parishioners will be able to provide their input, and the committee will update its search progress. Catechesis Classes Combine During Spring Break. For the next two Sundays, during Spring Break, the Catechesis classes will be combined. The two Level I classes that normally meet in the Power Library and the Atrium, will meet in the Atrium on the second floor near the Youth Center. The Level II classes, normally in Rooms 101 and 213, will meet in Room 213.
