Over the past spring and summer several new ministry leaders have joined the Saint Michael staff. On Sunday morning, August 20 you’ll get to meet and greet them at a reception in the Garden Cloister beginning at 9:30. They include: Justin Brooks, Director of Modern Worship Music; The Rev. Dr. Eric Liles, Associate for Formation; Chase Monson, Assistant Youth Director; Jonathan Ryan, Director of Music and Organist; Anne Schmidt, Membership Coordinator; Glenn Stroh Assistant Organist/Choirmaster; and Rich Towers, Associate for Student Ministries at SMU. Saint Michael 101 – An Introduction to Our Church for Newcomers. Newcomers interested in joining our church should attend the Saint Michael 101 lunch on Sunday, September 24 at 12:30 p.m. in the Coke Activities Room. It is the perfect opportunity to explore membership, meet clergy and Vestry members, and learn about our ministries, opportunities for involvement, and exciting future. If you have friends or neighbors who should be members of Saint Michael, get September 24 on their calendar. Childcare will be available. Oliver Butler Announces New Venture Ministry The Rev. Oliver Butler announced this past week that he is launching a new “For Profit, For Good” ministry leveraging his passion for outdoor cooking and addressing hunger issues facing the community. Read more about his new venture online or in the August Archangel. Butler’s last Sunday at Saint Michael will be August 27. A “good-bye” reception will be held following the Celebration worship service in Parish Hall.

Disciples’ Registration Deadline August 15 – Parents Meeting August 20. Registration for the 6th grade Disciples Confirmation Class closes on August 15 and a meeting of class parents will be Sunday, August 20 at 12:30 in the Youth Center. The parents will review the class schedule and requirements. The first Disciples’ retreat will be held the weekend of August 26 – 27 at Camp All Saints. The class, which meets throughout the academic year will conclude with Confirmation in May of next year. Register online at saintmichael.org/disciples.

Sunday School Registration Opens for Children and Youth. Registration for fall’s Children and Youth Sunday School has started. There are ageappropriate classes for children from age 3 through the 5th grade. Our middle school students will do a DVD Bible study, Echo the Story, and high schoolers will engage in Teen Text, a Lectionary-based program that makes the Bible a vital, dynamic resource for teens. Saint Michael Starts SMU Campus Ministry – Rich Towers to Lead. Saint Michael and All Angels will reestablish a campus ministry at SMU this fall led by The Rev. Rich Towers, who has been named Associate for Student Ministries. “Saint Michael will bring an Episcopal Church presence to SMU which has been dormant for several years, and infuse new vitality into our ministry to young adults,” Rector Chris Girata said. Towers will continue in his role as the Lower School Chaplain at the Episcopal School of Dallas. Pre-marriage Counseling Offered in August. The Sacrament of Marriage is one of life’s most important commitments. Saint Michael offers pre-marriage counseling to those preparing for this sacrament. This month there will be sessions today and on the 13th, 20th and 27th from 10:00 - 11:00 in the Chapel Conference Room. Greg Dodd, a certified senior advisor with Seniors Helping Seniors will be the speaker at Thursday's Faith and Grief Luncheon. It is an opportunity for those who have lost loved ones to have a meal and conversation together. The luncheon begins at 12:00 Noon in the Coke Activities Room. Make reservations with Katherine Bowen at kbowen@saintmichael.org. Author Colin Cahoon To Close Out Faith and Literature Series Next Sunday. Colin Cahoon, author of The Man with the Black Box, will close out this summer’s Faith and Literature class next Sunday, August 13. He is a writer of historically based fiction and a practicing Dallas patent attorney. Additionally he serves as the Chancellor of Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. His book is a terrifying examination of the corruptibility of mankind, a riveting twist on the classic battle of good versus evil. Faith and Literature meets Sunday at 10:00 in Saint Michael Chapel. Prayer Ministry to Meet with Canon to the Ordinary. The Rev. Canon Michael Gilton will meet with the Prayer Ministry team at its Thursday, August 17 meeting. He will discuss “Prayer Changes You.” The meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Coke Activities Room. Dinner is available for $10. Make reservations at saintmichael.org/prayerteam. Thank You for Bingo Prizes. Earlier this year, an appeal for prizes to award at the monthly Seniors Bingo Game at the Jubilee Park Community Center was included in the Sunday News and Archangel. The response was overwhelming. More than eight bags of prizes were donated including purses, candles, decorative home items, lotions, soaps, and baskets. On behalf of the Bingo game organizers, Sharon Snyder, Karen Pardoe, and Jean Coleman, “Thank you so very much!” Centering Prayer Moves to New Location. Beginning Tuesday, August 8, Centering Prayer will move its weekly 10:00 a.m. gathering to the Bishop Moore Chapel. All are welcome to engage in Centering Prayer and learn how to rest in God. Back-to-School Blessings Planned August 20. At every worship service on Sunday, August 20 Saint Michael will offer Back-to-School Blessings for children, youth, and parents. Kids of all ages are urged to bring their backpacks, book bags, computers, lunch kits or whatever to be blessed in preparation of another school year. Moms and Dads are urged bring their briefcases, smartphones, etc., to be blessed as well. A reception celebrating the beginning of a new academic year and our new staff members will be in the Garden Cloister from 9:30 – 11:00.
