Welcome to Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. The countdown to school and the fall is underway. Next Sunday we begin our fall worship schedule, have back-to-school blessings at all services, and greet seven new ministry leaders that have joined our staff. Fall Worship Schedule Begins Next Sunday August 20 The fall worship schedule will begin Sunday, August 20. Following is the schedule of services and locations. Colin Cahoon, author of The Man with the Black Box, closes out this summer’s Faith and Literature class today at 10:00 in Saint Michael Chapel. His book is an examination of the corruptibility of mankind, and the classic battle of good versus evil. Cahoon has donated copies of his book to the church which parishioners can purchase ($15 for paperback, $25 hardback) with the proceeds going to Saint Michael. Summer, Fall, and Beyond – A Discussion with the Rector. On August 27 and September 3 the Rector will discuss all of the activities that have taken place during the spring and summer, the exciting fall programs and initiatives, and where Saint Michael will be in the future months and years. The all-adult forum will meet in the church at 10:00 both weeks. A lot has happened and will continue to happen as we become the church we hope to be. Nametags Available at Reception Desk. If you’ve ordered a new nametag recently, it is ready. Please pick it up on the display counter across from the South Lanai reception desk. Fall Preaching and Teaching Series Focuses on Exodus - Beginning in September A new preaching and teaching series this fall, “Choosing Freedom – Our Journey with God,” will focus on The Book of Exodus and the choices the Israelites faced in their journey to freedom. On Sunday, September 10 the Rector Chris Girata will begin a seven week series of sermons at 9:00 and 11:00 in the church exploring how the Israelites’ journey to freedom relates to choices we have in our journey with God. The “Choosing Freedom – Our Journey with God” series will continue at 10:00 in Saint Michael Chapel with The Rev. Mary Lessmann and The Rev. Tom Blackmon expanding on what the journey tells us about God and ourselves, how it plays out in the New Testament, and how it looks in our lives today.

All youth, 6th grade through 12th grade, are invited to a Pool Party next Sunday afternoon, August 20 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. to meet our new Assistant Youth Director, Chase Monson. We’re meeting at the Hardaway’s home at 3504 Wentwood Drive from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Enjoy a swim in the pool, ice cream, and a really cool guy.

Disciples’ Registration Deadline August 15 – Parents Meeting August 20. Registration for the 6th grade Disciples Confirmation Class closes Tuesday, August 15 and a meeting of class parents will be next Sunday, August 20 at 12:30 in the Youth Center. The first Disciples’ retreat will be held August 26 – 27 at Camp All Saints. The class, which meets throughout the academic year, concludes with Confirmation in May of next year. Register online at saintmichael.org/disciples. Sunday School Registration Underway. Registration for fall’s Children and Youth Sunday School has started. There are age-appropriate classes for children from age 3 through the 5th grade. Our middle school students will do a DVD Bible study, Echo the Story, and high schoolers will engage in Teen Text, a Lectionary-based program that makes the Bible a vital, dynamic resource for teens. Children’s registration is at saintmichael. org/children/sundayschool. Youth registration is at saintmichael.org/youth/sundayschool. Help the Children and Family Ministry on Sundays. The Children and Family Ministry needs volunteers for its fall Sunday School classes. Consider taking one Sunday a month to help in the religious formation of our youngest members. Back-to-School Blessings Next Sunday, August 20. To get the new academic year off to a good start, there will be a blessing of backpacks at every worship service next Sunday. Our children and youth from pre-k to elementary, middle school, and high school, are urged to bring their backpacks to be blessed for a new year of learning. Adults can bring their briefcases, laptops, tablets and smartphones to be blessed, too. There are plenty of blessings to go around! Greet New Saint Michael Staff Members. Over the past spring and summer several new ministry leaders have joined the Saint Michael staff. Next Sunday, August 20 you’ll get to meet and greet them at a reception in the Garden Cloister beginning at 9:30. They include: Justin Brooks, Director of Modern Worship Music; The Rev. Dr. Eric Liles, Associate for Formation; Chase Monson, Assistant Youth Director; Jonathan Ryan, Director of Music and Organist; Anne Schmidt, Membership Coordinator; Glenn Stroh Assistant Organist/ Choirmaster; and Rich Towers, Associate for Student Ministries at SMU. Saint Michael 101 – An Introduction to Our Church for Newcomers. Newcomers interested in joining our church should attend the Saint Michael 101 lunch on Sunday, September 24 at 12:30 p.m. in the Coke Activities Room. It is the perfect opportunity to explore membership, meet clergy and Vestry members, and learn about our ministries, opportunities for involvement, and exciting future. If you have friends or neighbors who should be members of Saint Michael, get September 24 on their calendar. Childcare will be available. Prayer Ministry to Meet with Canon to the Ordinary Thursday. The Rev. Canon Michael Gilton meets with the Prayer Ministry team at its Thursday, August 17 meeting. He will discuss how “Prayer Changes You.” The meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Coke Activities Room. Dinner is available for $10. All are welcome and urged to attend. Deadline for Vestry/Convention Delegate Nominations Extended. Nominations for positions on the Saint Michael Vestry and as a delegate to the Diocesan Convention has been extended to Thursday, August 24. Nomination forms must be turned in to the receptionist in the South Lanai by 4:30 p.m. The election for the positions will be at the Parish Meeting on Sunday, October 29. Five new Vestry members will be elected to serve 3 year terms, and three delegates and three alternates will be named to our Convention delegation. Sin and Redemption Begins in September. The Rev. Tom Blackmon will lead a new discussion class this fall – Stories of Sin and Redemption – using short stories that engage the spiritual and moral questions facing the characters. Beginning September 12, the class will meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Chapel Conference Room. Register with Julia Giles at jgiles@saintmichael.org. St. Mary’s Guild Returns August 27. St. Mary’s Guild – with their Sunday morning tables of delicious temptations – returns in two weeks. Freshly baked treats and snacks will be available beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the South Lanai. All proceeds go to local charities. Centering Prayer Moves to New Location. Centering Prayer has moved its weekly 10:00 a.m. gathering to the Bishop Moore Chapel. All are welcome to learn how to rest in God. Oliver Butler Announces New Venture Ministry The Rev. Oliver Butler announced he is launching a new “For Profit, For Good” ministry leveraging his passion for outdoor cooking and addressing hunger issues facing the community. Read more about his new venture online or in the August Archangel. Butler’s last Sunday at Saint Michael will be August 27. A “good-bye” reception will follow the Celebration worship service in Parish Hall.

Representatives of the Women of Saint Michael will be outside the Parlor and Saint Michael Chapel today to sell the new tie collection.
