For 12 years he served as Dean of Christ Church Cathedral in Houston, retiring in 2012. Next Sunday we return to the full worship schedule. Parishioners are being asked to suggest potential Rector candidates to the Search and Transition Committee. The committee also will be asking everyone to participate in a comprehensive survey that will be used in developing a Parish Profile. Next Sunday’s Guest Preacher – Doug Travis. The Very Rev. Canon Douglas Travis, Canon Theologian for Formation in the Diocese of the Rio Grande will preach at the 9:00 worship service in the Church next Sunday, August 23. Prior to moving to the Rio Grande diocese he was President and Dean of the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin. Knitting Ministry Honored on August 30 at 11:00 Service. The Prayer Shawl ministry will be honored for knitting its 2,000th shawl at the 11:00 worship service in the Church on August 30. Anyone who has ever participated in the knitting ministry is invited to participate in the ceremony when the 2,000th shawl will be blessed. Food 4 Kids Funds Feeds Hungry Elementary School Children. The 10th annual Food 4 Kids fundraiser runs September 1- 30. Children ages 4 to 11 at critical risk for hunger receive a backpack of food for the weekend. $5 a week, $20 a month, $200 for the 40 week school year, or $260 for the whole year will impact a child’s life. Jubilee Park’s afterschool program serves 180 children from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Volunteers are needed to assist with homework, and enrichment activities. Columbarium Wins Design Award. Saint Michael’s new Columbarium and Nave Courtyard has been named to receive a prestigious 2015 Faith and Form Award, a highly esteemed international architectural competition. Our Columbarium project will be featured in Faith & Form Magazine and displayed at the national American Institute of Architects convention in Philadelphia next May. St. Michael’s Woman’s Exchange Closing Until Move. The St. Michael’s Woman’s Exchange in Highland Park Village will be closed from Thursday, August 20 until it reopens in its new renovated space after Labor Day. The new store will be adjacent to its old location and next to the new grocery store. Saint Michael’s Farmers Market Closing for the Season August 29. The season for Saint Michael’s Farmers Market will come to a close on Saturday, August 29. The market still is collecting for The Shoe Bank, Rainbow Days, Austin Street Shelter, and Brother Bill’s Helping Hand. Make a donation while picking up fresh fruit, eggs, or produce at the market. It’s open Saturdays from 8:00 to Noon. Christian Yoga Extends Through August. Yoga classes continue on Mondays at 5:30 in the Youth Center. The new sports field on our north campus has been completed with an irrigation system and new sod. But, it’s not ready for primetime, yet. The new sod needs time to take root and is being heavily watered during these hot days. The field will open for play in early October. Prime Timers To Give Retirement Lessons to the Dannals September 3. Prime Timers start their Fall programs with Valerie and Bob Dannals as they move into retirement… kind of. It is a great opportunity to visit with them on a personal level and to thank them for their loving service to our parish. Thursday, September 3, 10:30, in the Coke Activities Room. Dollar and Cents – A Mid-Year Look at Saint Michael, Sunday, August 23 Treasurer Grady Schleier will report on the church’s finances during the first six months of the year at 10:00 August 23 in the Parlor. He will review the church’s income, expenses, and financial projections for the remainder of 2015, and will have a question and answer session. Beginning August 30 - Book Studies (Whether You Have Read It Or Not). There are so many books; so little time. So whether or not you have read the book featured each Sunday, gather in the Chapel Conference Room at 10:00 to hear a presentation on books old and new. This is not a “review,” but rather a conversation about the contents and significance of the book for the presenter. Peggy Carr will lead off the series August 30 with Fannie Flagg’s Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven. Coffee And Conversation With Clergy. Each Sunday beginning August 30 a member of the clergy will be in the Parlor during the Sunday School hour to chat with parishioners. Grab a bite from the St. Mary’s Guild and bring it to the parlor for coffee. The Rev. Lisa Flores will be there to greet you on the 30th. New Fellowship Class Seeks Young/Middle Aged Adults. The new Fellowship Class – geared for 25 to 50 year olds – will address the needs, hopes, and dreams, of parents, young adults and “slightly older” adults. Led by the Vicar, Bill Murray and The Rev. Hunter Ruffin, the class will teach, share, and build community around the Church. It will meet in Parish Hall during the 10:00 Sunday School hour. Prayer Ministry to Preview 2015 – 2016 at August 20 Meeting. The Prayer Ministries will preview the 2015-16 year at its meeting Thursday, August 20, in the Coke Activities Room with new leaders, Dana Juett and Joan Faubion. The meeting will start at 5:30 and end by 7:00. We will enjoy a short video by Bob Goff, author of Love Does and discuss the coming year’s activities. Light snacks will be available. Questions?
