The new Young/Middle Age Adult group is off to a great start building fellowship and discussing values and the challenges to faith in today’s world. The Vestry has called The Very Rev. Douglas Travis as Interim Rector, beginning his ministry with us on September 28. For six years, he served as President and Dean of the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, and currently is Canon Theologian for the Diocese of the Rio Grande. Hear Dallas Police Chief. David Brown, Chief of Police for the City of Dallas, will be the speaker at today’s The Forum – Faith and Society Sunday School Class. Chief Brown is a thirty-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department. As Chief, he leads a department of more than 4,000 employees and oversees an annual operating budget of $426-million. The Forum meets at 10:00 in the Saint Michael Chapel.
Inquirers’ Series Begins September 23. Do you want to know more the Episcopal Church and Saint Michael and All Angels? The Inquirers’ Series takes place on Wednesday evenings beginning September 23 from 6:30 to 8:00, culminating with Confirmation on Sunday, November 8. Meeting in the Coke Activities Room, the series welcomes newcomers, long-time members, skeptics, or those recharging their faith. It’s a great way to introduce friends to our church. The Feast of Saint Michael The Feast of Saint Michael on September 27 will be a special day. The 9:00 and 11:00 church services combined at 10:00. We will celebrate the church’s 70 Anniversary by honoring our 7th Decade parishioners. A list of those people, retrieved from our records, was published in the September Archangel. AEDs, emergency defibrillators, have been installed at several strategic locations throughout the church. They are in the South Lanai reception area, the north Lanai entrance, and in the prayer chapel of the Church Narthex. Sport Field Opening Delayed. The opening of the new sports field on the north campus has been delayed to give the grass more time to grow. The extremely hot temperatures of late August and early September slowed the growth. The field will open in mid-October.
Backpacks 4 Kids Provides Weekend Food for At-Risk Children. The Backpack 4 Kids fundraiser continues through September, which is National Hunger Awareness Month. As 1 in 3 children in Dallas Public Schools qualify for the weekend backpack the need is critical. Volunteers will be outside the Book Shop to take your donations. Any amount helps - $5 a week, $20 a month, $200 for the 40 week school year or $260 for an entire year. Checks, cash, and credit cards are accepted. Come visit the St. Mary’s Guild Table in the South Lanai! The “Goodies” are back. The St. Mary’s Guild cakes and cookies are available every Sunday in the South Lanai. Wednesday’s Women of Saint Michael Luncheon Features Katie Riley. Katie Riley, Executive Director of the Saint Michael Episcopal School, will address the Women of Saint Michael at its first fall luncheon Wednesday, September 16. Parish Nurse Ministry Addresses the Flu. Saint Michael’s Parish Nurse Ministry will focus on prevention and treatment of flu and pneumonia Sunday, September 20. Our nurses will be in the South Lanai to answer questions and take your blood pressure. Grief Workshop Scheduled to Begin September 23. A six-week workshop, “Comfort and Hope for the Journey of Grief,” will be held on Wednesday evenings from September 23 to October 28. The workshop led by the Faith and Grief organization, will meet in the Chapel Conference Room, 5:30-7:30. There is no fee. Frank Griswold, former Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, will lead the retreat of Saint Michael’s Rector Search and Transition Committee, September 18-19. “We are honored to have a person of Bishop Griswold’s wisdom and experience to help focus our committee’s respective strengths into a team effort of discernment,” said committee chairs Diana Newton and Van Sheets.
