Welcome to Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. Today is a day of celebration! We are celebrating the Feast Day of Saint Michael, our patron saint, and the Institution of Chris Girata as the eighth Rector of our church. We are especially honored to have The Rt. Rev. Frank Griswold, the 25th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, with us today. He preached at yesterday’s Institution and is celebrating Eucharist at today’s 9:00 and 11:00 worship services in the church. There is no Sunday School today, so enjoy the fabulous reception celebrating this great day in the life of Saint Michael and All Angels. Food 4 Kids Raises $18,000 – a Few More Days to Go. Food 4 Kids raises money to provide food packets for Dallas children who might go hungry over the weekend. So far in September, Saint Michael parishioners have given more than $18,000 to the cause. More than $600 of that amount came from our Kindergarten through 5th Grade children. There’s still a few days left in the month to donate. Give a check to the receptionist or donate online at www.saintmichael.org/food4kids. Dr. Amy-Jill Levine to be Distinguished Lecture Scholar-in-Residence. Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt, will serve as Scholar-in-Residence beginning with the October 15 and 16 Distinguished Lecture Series, addressing “Who Am I Called to Be.” On Saturday, October 15 at 9:15, Dr. Levine will examine “The Call to Speak About the Church – Daniel in Babylon," followed by a discussion at 10:30 on “The Call to Discipleship – Mary and Martha." That session will meet in the Coke Activities Room. On Sunday, October 16, Dr. Levine will address the combined Forum and Bible Study Classes addressing “The Call to Action – Queen Esther" at 10:00 in the church. Faith and Grief Ministry Schedules Workshop. “Comfort and Hope for the Journey of Grief,” a six-week grief workshop, will be held at Saint Michael on Thursday evenings beginning October 6 through November 10, led by Diane Pennington of the Faith and Grief Ministries. The workshop will meet from 6:00 – 8:00 in the Chapel Conference Room. There is no fee. The deadline for registering is September 30. Len Bourland’s new book, Normal’s Just a Cycle on a Washing Machine, is available in the Saint Michael Book Shop. Len’s first book has clever snapshots of life told with wit and honesty. She will have a book signing at the St. Michael’s Woman’s Exchange on Wednesday, October 5 from 1:00 – 3:00, and at the Book Shop Sunday, November 20. The Feast of St. Michael In the Book of Revelation St. Michael leads God’s armies against the forces of evil where during the war in heaven he defeats Satan. When St. Michael began to appear in church sanctuaries around the 4th century, he was first seen as a healing angel, and by the 6th century was recognized as a protector and the leader of the army of God.

On October 9 and 16 children from the 3rd grade through 8th grade will tryout for specific parts between 12:30 – 2:30 in Room 101. Bring the family to National Night Out at the Jubilee Park and Community Center and volunteer to make this event one of the most successful ever! National Night Out is an annual program that promotes policecommunity partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. Saint Michael Presents’ fall concert will feature Grammy Award winning vocal ensemble, Conspirare, on Sunday, December 11 in its acclaimed holiday concert, “Conspirare Christmas.” The ensemble will perform a collage of holiday music including traditional carols. Dr. Jaime Clark-Soles, Professor of New Testament at SMU’s Perkins School of Theology, will teach at the Sunday Adult Bible Study Class on October 2 and October 9. She will be teaching on “Women in the Bible” at 10:00 in the Coke Activities Room. Dr. Clark-Soles also is the Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor. Monday Midday Book Study Takes Up New Book by SMU Professor. The new book of Dr. Jaime Clark-Soles, Reading John for Dear Life, will be the focus of the Monday Midday Book Study group beginning October 10. The group meets in the Chapel Conference Room at 12:00 Noon. Dr. Clark-Soles, is Professor of New Testament at SMU’s Perkins School of Theology and is teaching Sunday’s Adult Bible Study class on October 2 and 9. Saint Michael Rector Chris Girata will lead a pilgrimage next summer tracing the Journey’s of St. Paul through Rome, Greece, Turkey, and Malta. The cruise, from June 29 – July 12, will visit several historic and scenic destinations in the Mediterranean. Information brochures are at several locations throughout the church. Children’s Safety Enhanced with New Security Doors. The safety of school children on the Saint Michael campus has been significantly enhanced with the installation of new security doors near the north parking lot entrance. In coming weeks the doors will be electronically locked during school hours. There are three doors, two accessing the hallways from the north lanai, and a third at the east end of the hallway, near the choir room. Everyone needing access to the hallways, including the Coke Activities Room and the kitchen, will be required to have a nametag. The hallways will be open after school hours and on weekends. Show that we love our children, wear your nametag.
