Kristina Arakelyan is a young British composer whose reputation is receiving increasing acclaim. She has been commissioned by several prominent artists recently, including the commission for this piece, which came from Anna Lapwood, and has received awards from several organizations including BBC Proms. She is currently a doctoral candidate at King’s College, London. The ‘Star Fantasy’ presents a vivid and exciting take on the ancient Epiphany hymn Vidimus stellam. Toccata figurations capture the excitement the magi must have felt upon the conclusion of their journey.

Hear what the LORD says: Rise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. Hear, you mountains, the controversy of the LORD, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for the LORD has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel. “O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me! For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of slavery; and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. O my people, remember now what King Balak of Moab devised, what Balaam son of Beor

answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the saving acts of the LORD. With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” He has told you,
O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Whoever leads a blameless life and does what is right, * who speaks the truth from his heart.
William Best
There is no guile upon his tongue; he does no evil to his friend; * he does not heap contempt upon his neighbor.
In his sight the wicked is rejected, * but he honors those who fear the LORD.
He has sworn to do no wrong * and does not take back his word.
He does not give his money in hope of gain, * nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. Whoever does these things * shall never be overthrown.

The Gospel Matthew 5:1-12 (standing)
Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Presentation of the Bibles
Minister On this special day, Saint Michael and All Angels is proud to present these Holy Bibles to these students. We believe they are now old enough to read these words, to study them, pray with them, and ask questions about them. But they will not read these words on their own: they will come to God’s Word as members of our community of faith.
The Minister then addresses the children.
Minister We hope that as you read the Bible, you will bring not only your faith, but also your questions and your doubts to Saint Michael, for we grow in our faith by learning together. May we be a loving, supporting, listening, and teaching community, for we want to grow with you in faith, in knowledge, and in obedience to God’s Word.

This anthem’s text is at the center of the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord in the temple, which is observed on February 2, the 40th day after Christmas. This is the prayer of Simeon, after he saw the child Jesus in the Temple. Sarah MacDonald has had over 50 choral and organ compositions published, and her liturgical music is performed throughout the world. In 2018 she received the honorary ARSCM in recognition of her contribution to choral music in the UK and Canada, citing particularly her support of contemporary British composers.
People We promise to read these words with you, to listen to your questions and seek answers together, to share our understanding, and to be honest about our own questions and doubts.
We want to grow with you in faith, in knowledge, and in obedience to God’s Word.
Minister Receive the Word of God. Learn its stories, study its words, and live out its commandments. Its stories belong to us all, and these words speak to us all. They tell us who we are and that we belong to one another, for we are the people of God.
Once all the children have received their Bibles, the Minister continues.
Minister Let us pray. Lord God, with the help of Your Holy Spirit, encourage these students to use these sacred writings for their prayer and inspiration, for the increase of their own faith and devotion, and for the building up of Your Kingdom. Through Your Word, may we all be transformed into the very likeness of our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.
Please kneel as you are able
We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore, according to his command, O Father,
All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly

country where, with Saint Michael and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Postlude
Allegro con brio from Sonata No. 4, Op. 65 Felix Mendelssohn
Mendelssohn’s organ sonatas represent a significant rebirth for the organ in both continental Europe and England. Mendelssohn was a child prodigy and one of the great virtuosos of his day. He made his name on the continent as a pianist and conductor and in England as an organist, and frequently drew packed houses to his concerts on tour. When he published his sonatas simultaneously with four publishing houses in England, Germany, Italy, and France, these works instantly joined the standard canon of organ repertoire.

The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979. The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.

This is an amazing time of great food, family, and friends. You won’t want to miss one last celebration before we begin the season of Lent. Laissez les bons temps roulez (let the good times roll) with a concert of Mardi Gras jazz!
A pilgrimage to the Holy Land is life-changing. Taking this trip with family and friends is even more unique. Join Father Ken as we visit biblical sites, reflect on Jesus’ ministry, and encounter God in a new way. Space is limited! To RSVP for the information session or learn more, contact Ken Brannon, kbrannon@saintmichael.org.
