Welcome to Saint Michael—we’re glad you’re here! Please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on the opposite page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

Our worship continues each week throughout the summer, along with adult classes and activities for children and youth of all ages. Please check the schedule to the right for details on classes and activities, and if you need help navigating to particular rooms, there are Greeters in the hallways to help. And thank you to the dozens of adults and teens who volunteered this past week to make Vacation Bible School such a success!

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Dietrich Buxtehude was one of the prime figures composing in a style known as the “stylus phantasticus” in Baroque northern Europe. This style juxtaposes strongly contrasting styles suddenly with one another in an effort to shock and awe listeners. In this vein, Buxtehude’s Praeludium in G Minor alternates between intense, toccata-like figurations and introspective passages with very little preparation. Listen for the swirling figures of the opening toccata, which some musicologists have suggested were intended to convey the creation and ordering of the universe.

Irish by birth, Stanford was one of the most influential composers of Anglican church music of his day. As a composition professor at the Royal College of Music in London for most of his life, his teaching influenced some of the most important composers of the following generations. One of his most beloved, as well as simplest anthems, “O for a closer walk with God,” depicts the poignant beauty of communion with God in the first verse. The music unsurprisingly takes a more tension-filled turn at the end of the second verse, only to return to the opening music material at the third verse.

Today’s postlude was commissioned by Laura Dunbar and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for premiere on the parish’s E.M. Skinner organ by Tim Pyper on Feb. 27, 2005. It was written as a companion piece to a setting of Psalm 95, “Come, let us sing unto the Lord,” for treble voices and organ. The ecstatic rising scales throughout the work illustrate the overriding sense of joy in the text, and multiple quotations from the companion Psalm setting further link the text and music.

Almighty and most merciful God, we remember before you all poor and neglected persons whom it would be easy for us to forget: the homeless and the destitute, the old and the sick, and all who have none to care for them. The Saint Michael Confirmation experience for students 8th grade and above is underway for 2023–2024! Our new program expands beyond the 9-month class to incorporate new trips and classes for the 2023–2024 school year.

• The cost is $350, which covers curriculum, the opening retreat, and a James Avery confirmation ring.

• Our Confirmation class will take place on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. in person.

Two–three hour shifts between 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Interview/evaluate clients asking for rent/utility assistance. Assist NDSM in determining eligibility.

Fill the Summer Pantry

June 4–July 16

Fill the NDSM pantry during the summer, a season when the need for food is the highest. Grocery bags will be available at church entrances with facts about hunger, a list of NDSM’s most needed items, and a prayer to reflect upon. Contact Kirstin at kivy@saintmichael.org for more information.
