FROM THE RECTOR

Welcome to Saint Michael— we’re glad you’re here! Please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on the opposite page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

Today we celebrate Independence Day with special music in our worship services and a festive reception in the Garden Cloister at 10 a.m.

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

The Word of God

Welcome

Opening Song (standing, sung by all)

“We Will Feast In The House Of Zion”

We will feast in the house of Zion

We will sing with our hearts restored

He has done great things we will say together

We will feast and weep no more

We will not be burned by the fire

He is the Lord our God

We are not consumed by the flood

Upheld protected gathered up

We will feast in the house of Zion

We will sing with our hearts restored

He has done great things we will say together

We will feast and weep no more

In the dark of night before the dawn

My soul be not afraid

For the promised morning oh how long

Oh God of Jacob be my strength

We will feast in the house of Zion

We will sing with our hearts restored

He has done great things we will say together

We will feast and weep no more

Every vow we’ve broken and betrayed

You are the faithful one

And from the garden to the grave

Bind us together bring shalom (song continues on the next page)

The Opening Acclamation & Collect for Purity (standing)

Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Celebrant

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect of the Day (standing)

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lesson Jeremiah 28:5-9 (seated)

The prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord; and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord fulfill the words that you have prophesied, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles. But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.”

Lector The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

Sequence Hymn (standing, sung by all)

“The Gradual”

May our hearts burn in us

As You reveal Your Word to us

Let us walk within Your steps

We’re captured by Your holiness

Word of God, move in us

Speak the truth within our souls

Restore lives, revive our hearts

For Your glory’s sake

We meditate upon Your Word

As we pray that Your voice be heard

Your law upon our hearts impress

As Your name forever blessed

Word of God, move in us

Speak the truth within our souls

Restore lives, revive our hearts

For Your glory’s sake

The Gospel Matthew 10:40-42 (standing)

Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said, “Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple-truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”

Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon (seated) The Reverend Mary Lessmann

3

Nicene Creed (standing, spoken by all)

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

4

The Prayers of the People: Form III (standing)

Celebrant Let us now pray for the church and for the world.

Lector Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; People That we all may be one.

Lector Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; People That your Name may be glorified by all people.

Lector We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; People That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

Lector We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; People That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

Lector Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; People That our works may find favor in your sight.

Lector Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; People That they may be delivered from their distress.

Lector Give to the departed eternal rest; People Let light perpetual shine upon them.

Lector We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy. People May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Lector Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.

Celebrant Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Confession of Sin (kneeling)

Priest Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

5

Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer A (standing)

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

8

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

All Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

Celebrant Alleulia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. Allelulia.

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

9

All are invited to come forward to the standing stations at the direction of our ushers. Receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

Communion Hymn (seated, sung by all)

“Be Thou My Vision”

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; all else be nought to me, save that thou artthou my best thought, by day or by night, waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word; I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord; thou my great Father; thine own may I be; thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise

Thou mine inheritance, now and always Thou and Thou only, first in my heart

High King of Heaven, my treasure Thou art

High King of heaven, when victory is won, may I reach heaven’s joys, bright heaven’s Sun! Heart of my heart, whatever befall, still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

The Post-Communion Prayer (standing, spoken by all)

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

10

The Blessing (standing)

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

SUNDAY FORMATION

Whisper: How to Hear the Voice of God

Now–July 30 | 10 a.m. | Saint Michael Chapel

We are focusing on the ways God speaks in our lives and how we can tune in. If there was one thing that defined the Apostles and the first century church, it’s that everything they did was guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit. As we enter the season of Pentecost, we’re going to look at the ways the Holy Spirit speaks and how we can better hear the voice and wisdom of God for our lives and for our church.
