“Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim” Paderborn Hymn 535

PreludeVivace and Andante, from Trio Sonata No. 4 in E Minor, BWV 528 Johann Sebastian Bach

The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost Holy Eucharist Rite II

1

(standing, sung by all)

The service begins on page 355 of The Book of Common Prayer. The Word of God

Borrowing from an Italian instrumental form, Bach’s six trio sonatas represent mastery and virtuosity in organ composition. They were written for Bach’s oldest son in the 1720s during Bach’s tenure in Leipzig. His Fourth Trio Sonata is among the most somber—in particular, the Andante movement features numerous dissonance-resolutionbeautifulsequencepassages.

Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Gloria in excelsis (standing, sung by all) Robert Powell Hymn S 280

Hymn continues on the next page

Children ages three through eight are invited to proceed to children’s chapel by exiting through the east doors at the back of the nave; they will return to the nave following the Peace.

The Opening Acclamation & Collect for Purity (standing)

Lector The Word of the Lord.

The Collect of the Day (standing)

Celebrant Let us pray.

3

Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law becomes slack and justice never prevails. The wicked surround the righteous-therefore judgment comes forth perverted. … I will stand at my watchpost, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. Then the LORD answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith.

People Thanks be to God.

The Lesson Habakkuk 1:1-4, 2:1-4 (seated)

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The oracle that the prophet Habakkuk saw. O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen? Or cry to you “Violence!” and you will not save? Why do you make me see wrong-doing and look at trouble?

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you.

For they shall soon wither like the grass, * and like the green grass fade away.

Commit your way to the LORD and put your trust in him, * and he will bring it to pass.

He will make your righteousness as clear as the light * and your just dealing as the noonday.

Be still before the LORD * and wait patiently for him.

Sequence Hymn (standing, sung by all)

Take delight in the LORD, * and he shall give you your heart’s desire.

Do not fret yourself over the one who prospers, * the one who succeeds in evil schemes.

“Be thou my vision” Slane Hymn 488, v. 1

Put your trust in the LORD and do good; * dwell in the land and feed on its riches.

The Psalm 37:1-8 (seated, chanted by the choir)

4

Do not fret yourself because of evildoers; * do not be jealous of those who do wrong.

John Joubert

Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here at once and take your place at the table’? Would you not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink’? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!’”

The Peace Celebrant(standing)

Celebrant Almighty God, to whom our needs are known before we ask: Help us to ask only what accords with your will; and those good things which we dare not, or in our blindness cannot ask, grant us for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O thou who camest from above, the pure celestial fire to impart, Kindle a flame of sacred love on the altar of my heart. There let it for thy glory burn with inextinguishable blaze, And trembling to its source return, in humble prayer and fervent praise. Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire to work and speak and think for thee; Still let me guard the holy fire, and stir up thy gift in me: Ready for all thy perfect will, my acts of faits and love repeat, Till death thy endless mercies seal, and make my sacrifice complete. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer B (standing)

Please kneel as you are able

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

Sanctus and Benedictus (standing, sung by all) William Mathias Hymn S 129

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord.

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Michael and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

10

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father, All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

PostludeConcerto

During his time working for the court in Weimar, Bach transcribed a number of orchestral concertos for the organ. This one, in A Minor, is transcribed from a Vivaldi concerto for two violins. To illustrate the original piece’s alternation between soloists and full orchestra, Bach indicates that the organist should switch keyboards for a difference in sound. Listen for changing textures within the framework of constantly chugging rhythms for which Vivaldi is known.

The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979. The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.
