Hendrik Andriessen (1892–1981) was a Dutch composer and organist, remembered mostly for his organ improvisations, as well as the renewal of Catholic liturgical music in the Netherlands.

Andriessen composed in a musical idiom that revealed strong French influences. Theme and Variations is his bestknown organ work.

The Opening Acclamation & Collect for Purity (standing)

Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria in excelsis (standing, sung by all) Robert Powell Hymn S 280

Children ages three through eight are invited to proceed to children’s chapel by exiting through the east doors at the back of the nave; they will return to the nave following the Peace.

The Collect of the Day (standing)

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lesson Ecclesiasticus 35:12-17 (seated)

Give to the Most High as he has given to you, and as generously as you can afford. For the Lord is the one who repays, and he will repay you sevenfold. Do not offer him a bribe, for he will not accept it and do not rely on a dishonest sacrifice; for the Lord is the judge, and with him there is no partiality. He will not show partiality to the poor; but he will listen to the prayer of one who is wronged. He will not ignore the supplication of the orphan, or the widow when she pours out her complaint.

(Since this lesson is apocryphal there is no concluding sentence)

The Psalm 84:1-6 (seated, chanted by the choir)

Robert Lehman

How dear to me is your dwelling, O LORD of hosts! * My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.

The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young; * by the side of your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God.

Happy are they who dwell in your house! * they will always be praising you.

Happy are the people whose strength is in you! * whose hearts are set on the pilgrims’ way.

Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of springs, * for the early rains have covered it with pools of water. They will climb from height to height, * and the God of gods will reveal himself in Zion.

The Gospel Luke 18:9-14 (standing)

Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his

breast and saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalt ed.”

Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon (seated)

The Nicene Creed (standing)

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

The Reverend Mary Lessmann

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

5

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Composed for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, this anthem creates an atmosphere of reverence and awe. It is programmed today to pair with the Gospel reading, which depicts what a day in Jesus’ courts is like. The lowly are exalted and the humble and meek are made whole. Howells creates an expansive sonic landscape to depict the beauty and splendor of the courts of the Lord. Dramatic leaps in vocal lines contrast haunting harmonic shifts to create the piece’s climax at “the face of thine Anointed.”

Celebrant Almighty God, to whom our needs are known before we ask: Help us to ask only what accords with your will; and those good things which we dare not, or in our blindness cannot ask, grant us for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Confession of Sin and Absolution (kneeling)

Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

Please kneel as you are able

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteous ness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Michael and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

9

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Fraction Anthem (sung by all) David Hurd Hymn S 154

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

10

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all)

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Fugue in E Flat Major is the concluding work in Bach’s monumental 1739 publication titled “Clavier Übung III” (Keyboard Exercises III); a collection of 27 organ/keyboard works, written for “lovers, and especially connoisseurs of such music.” The fugue’s opening motive uses the first line of today’s dismissal hymn, but Bach likely was not familiar with the tune.

Hymn permission used by Rite Song, a one-time use reprint license for congregational use.

The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979. The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.

ENGAGEMENT MINISTRY

HOW ARE WE SPREADING LOVE IN THE WORLD?

Welcoming, informing, and connecting with visitors and parishioners on Sundays and connecting, caring, and celebrating with our neighbors throughout the week.

At Saint Michael we want everyone to feel welcome, not just on Sundays, but throughout the week and in their neighborhoods. In fact, a greeter is more than likely one of the first people a parishioner or visitor will encounter on their way to Sunday morning worship. The goal of the Greeter Ministry is to welcome, inform, and connect visitors and members with the exciting events, ministries, and small group experiences at Saint Michael. The Good Shepherds are the neighborhood liaisons to the life of the parish connecting, caring for and celebrating with parishioners in and around the Park Cities and DFW area. Both are very rewarding ministry experiences of encountering new people and getting to know neighbors who may live on your block! JOIN US!!

READING THE BIBLE FOR ALL ITS WORTH Led by Dr. Tim Smith Sundays, October 30 – November 20 10 a.m.

Saint Michael Chapel

The Bible was written over the course of 1500 years by more than 30 different authors, in nine different genres, on three different continents, each one with a unique time, place, and context. If that’s not enough, understanding Scripture is complicated all the more by the fact that we are separated from the text through time, culture, and worldview. Most of us have never been taught how to read and interpret the Bible in its original context. The goal of this class is to get you excited and re-engaged in discovering God’s Word anew by learning the original meaning of a text. To do that, we’ll teach you some frameworks, and share tools and resources that will forever change how you engage and read God’s Word.

OUTRAGEOUS PRAYERS OF THE BIBLE Led by Dr. Elizabeth Lang Sundays, October 30 – November 20 10 a.m.

Coke Room

Some faithful Christians are reluctant to pray because they are concerned that they are not doing it right, especially ifthey are not using a prayerbook. Elizabeth Lang will lead us in examining a variety of prayers in the Bible so that we can discover what speaks to each of us about prayer. There are many questions and answers that come from exploring outrageous prayers in the Bible. These may free us to pray with honesty and faith.
