New in composition, old in language, ancient in mood, the Trois nouvelles pièces Op 87 (1934) were Widor’s final compositions, at the age of 90. They were dedicated to three of the composer’s American disciples. Mystique presents a lyrical melody on the Flûte Harmonique, followed by a more animated and contrapuntal section which then leads to a return of the first theme. The piece closes with an expressive coda.

The Lesson

Jeremiah 1:4-10

The word of the LORD came to me saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.” But the LORD said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a boy’; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you, Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD.” Then the LORD put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the LORD said to me, “Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.” Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 71:1-16 In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge; * let me never be ashamed.

Ivor Atkins

In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; * incline your ear to me and save me. Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe; * you are my crag and my stronghold. Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, * from the clutches of the evildoer and the oppressor. For you are my hope, O Lord GOD, * my confidence since I was young. I have been sustained by you ever since I was born; from my mother’s womb you have been my strength; * my praise shall be always of you. Sequence Hymn Hymn 440, v. 1 “Blessed Jesus, at thy word”

The Gospel Gospeler People

Luke 4:21-30 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus began to speak in the synagogue at Nazareth: “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” He said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Doctor, cure yourself !’ And you will say, ‘Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum’.” And he said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet’s hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. Gospeler People Seated Standing, spoken by All

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People Form IV Celebrant Let us pray for the Church and for the world. Lector People

John Blow was a 17th-century English composer, perhaps most famous for being a teacher to Henry Purcell. Blow was organist of Westminster Abbey and later Choirmaster of the then newly-built St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer B Celebrant People Celebrant People Celebrant People

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus and Benedictus: Hymn S 128

William Mathias

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

Therefore, according to his command, O Father, We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

Celebrant and People

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

The Celebrant continues

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Michael and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,

Postlude Concerto in A Minor, I. [Allegro], BWV 593

Johann Sebastian Bach

During his time working for the court in Weimar, Bach transcribed a number of orchestral concertos for the organ. This one, in A Minor, is transcribed from a Vivaldi concerto for two violins. To illustrate the original piece’s alternation between soloists and full orchestra, Bach indicates that the organist should switch keyboards for a difference in sound. Listen for changing textures within the framework of constantly churning rhythms for which Vivaldi is known. Hymn permission used by Rite Song, a one-time use reprint license for congregational use. The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979. The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.

Sundays at 10 a.m. MATURING IN CHRIST Led by the Rev. Ken Brannon The Practice of the Presence of God, Part 2: “The Role of Renunciation, Repentance, and Suffering” Saint Michael Chapel Last week we began our discussion of Brother Lawrence’s slim volume, “The Practice of the Presence of God.” We learned about who this 17th century monk was and how he placed the love of God at the center of every waking moment. This Sunday, we will explore what Lawrence of the Resurrection has to say about the role of renunciation, repentance, and suffering in the journey toward God; he believes all three are normal and essential, even if our first impulse is to resist them. CLASS FOR PARENTS Led by the Rev. Christian Basel Reaffirming Spiritual Lives in the New Year Theater We continue our discussion this week on beginning the new year with new and strengthened spiritual goals. This week we will discuss and share the things that can make achieving these goals difficult. We will talk about the stumbling blocks of our spiritual journeys and where God is found in these difficult situations.
