This Sunday, our regular Sunday worship schedule resumes. Please remember what ev. ic e K en V I said in the announcements last , n e th H a n n o n . Br week: there are people who are not yet here who would love to be here—they just need an invitation from you. Please consider inviting at least one person to church and remember to greet the ones you do not recognize. If someone is looking for more information about Saint Michael, do not hesitate to connect them with Rob Springer, our Director of Engagement, a Greeter, an Usher, a staff member, or a member of the clergy. It is important that we not only welcome people well, but also help them connect to the parish in meaningful ways. We kick off our program year next Sunday, August 14! In addition to fellowship in the Garden Cloister and blessing backpacks during worship, we will also hold a book signing for the debut of our brand new children’s book and audio series, “Stories From the Bible, From Creation to Pentecost,” based on the favorite sermons of Father Harmuth during the 9 a.m. Joy service. Both Father Harmuth and the illustrator, Travis Harvey, will be on hand to sign books. I am so proud of the work that went into the creation of this book and know you will want to purchase a copy. We can’t wait to welcome Chris Girata back from sabbatical next Sunday! I will write one more letter to the parish next weekend, and then hand this column back over to him. Thanks for reading and staying connected to Saint Michael Church.

The Collect of the Day Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Seated

The Lesson Genesis 15:1-6 The word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.” But the word of the LORD came to him, “This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir.” He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” And he believed the LORD; and the LORD reckoned it to him as righteousness. Psalm 33:12-22 Spoken in unison

1

Happy is the nation whose God is the LORD! * happy the people he has chosen to be his own! The LORD looks down from heaven, *

and beholds all the people in the world. From where he sits enthroned he turns his gaze * on all who dwell on the earth. He fashions all the hearts of them * and understands all their works. There is no king that can be saved by a mighty army; * a strong man is not delivered by his great strength. The horse is a vain hope for deliverance; * for all its strength it cannot save. Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon those who fear him, * on those who wait upon his love, To pluck their lives from death, * and to feed them in time of famine. Our soul waits for the LORD; * he is our help and our shield. Indeed, our heart rejoices in him, * for in his holy Name we put our trust. Let your loving-kindness, O LORD, be upon us, * as we have put our trust in you. The Gospel Gospeler People

Standing

Jesus said to his disciples, “Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.”

Worshippers are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Kneel at the rail as you are able, or stand to receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat. But we need new members to bake and sell at the Sunday tables. Each member joins one of four teams and is only responsible for baking and/or selling once a month. You can bake only, sell only, or bake and sell. Selling on Sundays is a great way to meet other parishioners, visit with new and old friends, and enjoy a new fellowship group. Members can choose their sell times between 8:30 and 11 a.m. and still attend a service. All proceeds go to local charities. Join us to enliven your Saint Michael experience.
