Welcome to our Palm Sunday celebration! Throughout Lent, we have been seeking guidance and hope in the example of Re , v. D a Christ as we are led toward the t ir a r. C hristopher D. G ultimate hope of the resurrection. Today we celebrate with the Most. Rev. Michael B. Curry as our guest preacher. As Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Michael Curry has been a witness to Christian love and will bring amazing energy to our worship!
JOIN US ON SUNDAY
Following our Palm Sunday celebration, we enter the sacred journey of Holy Week. Although there is worship each day of the week, I want to draw your attention to three special services at the end of the week. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil are a sacred set of services that draw us especially close to God’s holy presence. I invite you to join us for worship on all three days—together, they will be a blessing to you. Of course, join us for our glorious celebration of Easter Sunday in just over a week. The Great Fifty Days of Easter is a period of great joy for Christians around the world, and we begin with a resurrection festival. This year, we have the great gift of celebrating in person. Our pandemic separation has been painful, so let’s gather and celebrate our faith as one big family. Join us! After Easter Sunday, make plans to join us for our BIG Anniversary celebration weekend. On Friday, April 22, Michael, A Musical will light up SMU’s McFarlin Auditorium stage for one night only! Tickets are free, but please reserve your tickets ahead. On Sunday, April 24, join us for our big 75th Anniversary Birthday Party and lunch at church. There will be inflatables, giveaways, games, and great food, so come with your party pants on!

OPENING DAY AT THE FARMERS MARKET! 4344 COLGATE AVE | 8 AM – NOON SAINTMICHAELSMARKET.COM
This prelude is based upon a chorus from Handel’s Messiah: “Lift up your heads, o ye gates: and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors, and the King of Glory shall come in.” Handel’s original melody is heard from the very beginning, creating a majestic processional. It is then played in a minor key, to form an energetic fugue, which leads to a powerful restatement of the original material.
Holy Eucharist Rite II The Word of God The service begins on page 355 of The Book of Common Prayer.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.
It is right to praise you, Almighty God, for the acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph, and was proclaimed as King of kings by those who spread their garments and branches of palm along his
way. Let these branches be for us signs of his victory, and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who lives and reigns in glory with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Zechariah 9:9-12
Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war-horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall command peace to the nations; his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Chanted by the Choir

The Gospel Gospeler People
Luke 19:28-40 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’” So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” They said, “The Lord needs it.” Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, order your disciples to stop.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.” Gospeler People Seated

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People Form V Celebrant Let us now pray for the church and for the world. Lector

One of the most prolific composers of Anglican choral service music in the early 17thcentury, Thomas Weelkes spent most of his working life as organist and choir director at Chichester Cathedral. Today’s anthem is the text spoken by the people at Jesus’ entry on the donkey to Jerusalem, which we commemorate today on Palm Sunday. Weelkes alternates a grand, homophonic texture on “Hosanna” with a more complex, multi-voiced texture. Standing, Sung by All

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. For our sins he was lifted high upon the cross, that he might draw the whole world to himself; and, by his suffering and death, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who put their trust in him. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Celebrant and People
The Celebrant continues
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.
11
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Fraction Anthem: S164
