The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata
We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.
As we begin the holy season of Advent, I hope you will make sure to pick up a copy of the Sunday News pamphlet available near the doors of the church. There are many ways to invest yourself in special offerings throughout the season. Today at 4 p.m., join us for Advent Lessons & Carols, the first of a trio of services now through Epiphany. Tomorrow launches a new season of Weekday Meditations led by the clergy of Saint Michael that will help you walk through the season. I also encourage you to invest in your discipleship growth and in our shared ministry by committing to an annual stewardship gift this year. Please see the blue box at the bottom of this page and make your gift today. What we do makes a true impact, and we need you!
As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Hymn S 99
Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we
In Lutheran Germany, Nun komm der Heiden Heiland, is associated with the first day of Advent. Its text begins with a pleading for Christ to come to His people: “Come now, Savior of the gentiles!” This cry underscores the intent of Advent: to await the birth of our Lord. The setting heard in today’s prelude features a heavily ornamented statement of the hymn melody played in the right hand over ponderous, slowly moving statements in the left hand and pedal.
may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
The First Lesson (seated) Jeremiah 33:14-16
The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: “The LORD is our righteousness.”
Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.
The Psalm (seated) Psalm 25:1-9
To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul; my God, I put my trust in you ; * let me not be humiliated, nor let my enemies triumph over me.
Let none who look to you be put to shame; * let the treacherous be disappointed in their schemes.
Show me your ways, O LORD, * and teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me, * for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long.
Remember, O LORD, your compassion and love, * for they are from everlasting.
Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; * remember me according to your love and for the sake of your goodness, O LORD.
Gracious and upright is the LORD; * therefore he teaches sinners in his way.
He guides the humble in doing right *
and teaches his way to the lowly. All the paths of the LORD are love and faithfulness * to those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.
The Second Lesson (seated)
1 Thessalonians 3:9-13
How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.
Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.
Sequence Hymn (standing, sung by all) Hymn 73, v. 1
“ The King shall come when morning dawns” St. Stephen
The Gospel (standing)
Luke 21:25-36
Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory be to thee, O Lord.
Jesus said, “There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and f oreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in a cloud’ with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Then he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is
already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise be to thee, O Christ.
The Sermon (seated) The Reverend Mary Lessmann The Nicene Creed (standing)
All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
The Prayers of the People (standing)
Celebrant Let us pray for the Church and for the world.
Lector Almighty and everliving God, who in thy holy Word hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men: Receive these our prayers which we offer unto thy divine Majesty, beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord; and grant that all those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and g odly love.
Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all bishops and other ministers, especially Justin, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Church of England as they discern his successor; Sean, our Presiding Bishop; and George, our Bishop; that they may, both by their life and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments.

And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace, and especially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear and receive thy holy Word, truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life.
We beseech thee also so to rule the hearts of those who bear the authority of government in this and e very land [especially Joe, our President; Greg, our g overnor; and Eric, our mayor], that they may be led to wise decisions and right actions for the welfare and peace of the world.
Open, O Lord, the eyes of all people to behold thy g racious hand in all thy works, that, rejoicing in thy whole creation, they may honor thee with their substance, and be faithful stewards of thy bounty.
And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succor all those who in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity.
We pray for all those on the Saint Michael prayer list, and for ___.
We give thanks for the ministry of ___.
And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear, especially ___, beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service; and to grant us grace so to follow the good examples of Saint Michael and of all thy saints, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom.
Grant these our prayers, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.
of Sin and Absolution (kneeling)
Celebrant Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.
All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen.
Celebrant Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all g oodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gustav Holst’s “Let all mortal flesh keep silence” is a choral setting of a traditional hymn from the Orthodox liturgy, which speaks of awe and reverence before the divine. Holst’s arrangement marked by rich harmonies and a slow, meditative pace, creates a sense of solemnity and mystery. This piece captures the grandeur of the text, showcasing its power and reflectiveness.
Offertory Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir)
Let all mortal flesh keep silence arr. Gustav Holst
Let all mortal flesh keep silence
And with fear and trembling stand; Ponder nothing earthly-minded,
For with blessing in his hand
Christ our Lord to earth descendeth
Our full homage to demand.
King of Kings, yet born of Mary,
As of old on earth he stood, Lord of Lords, in human vesture,
In the body and the blood
He will give to all the faithful
His own self for heav’nly food.
Rank on rank the host of heaven
Spreads his vanguard on the way,
As the light of light descendeth
From the realms of endless day, That the pow’rs of hell may vanish
As the darkness clears away.
At his feet the six wing’d seraph; Cherubim with sleepless eye
Veil their faces to the presence
As with ceaseless voice they cry, Alleluia, alleluia, Alleluia, Lord most high. Amen.

“Holy, holy, holy”
Please kneel as you are able.
All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again.
For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
L ikewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for
All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.
Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.
All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.
many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”
Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.
And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ.
And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord;
By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

O R adiant Dawn
Hymn 454
James MacMillan
O Radiant Dawn, Splendor of eternal Light, Sun of Justice, Come, shine on those who dwell in darkness And the shadow of death. Isaiah had prophesied, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone.” Amen.
- Antiphon for 21 December
James MacMillan’s “O Radiant Dawn” draws upon the ancient “O Antiphons” of Advent, specifically invoking the image of Christ as the light breaking into the world’s spiritual darkness. MacMillan’s setting is infused with a sense of yearning and hope expressed through lush, resonant harmonies that rise and fall like a prayerful plea for salvation. The music builds slowly, mirroring the dawning light, as the voices blend in a radiant crescendo, capturing the profound anticipation of the coming of Christ.
The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979.
The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.
César Franck’s organ reputation rests firmly on just a dozen pieces, which include the three great Chorals and the “Pièce Héroïque,” all dating from 1868 until the year of Franck’s death in 1890. Today’s poslude comes from a group of 44 pieces, most of which were published posthumously under the editorship of Franck’s son, Georges, in 1905. These were designed as liturgical offertories, for parish organists “in the provinces,” playable on harmonium or larger pipe organs.
The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all)
Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end.
