SAINT MICHAEL

and All Angels Episcopal Church

The Second Sunday After The Epiphany

January 19, 2025

9 AM TRADITIONAL CHURCH

WELCOME

FROM THE RECTOR

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

Tonight, please join us at 4 p.m. for Epiphany Lessons & Carols, the conclusion of the cycle of observances that began in Advent and continued through Christmas. This service will feature both our Traditional and Contemporary music ministries and will include familiar hymns and music newly arranged for this service. Come and bring a friend as we celebrate the light of Christ shining throughout the world. I also hope you will join us at 10 a.m. for Sunday classes for all ages. In addition to classes for children and youth, we have four offerings for adults each week. Please check out the schedule in the back of this bulletin and join us. And please grab a Sunday News pamphlet as you leave for more ways to plug into our church community in this new year. Finally, Saint Michael has made two initial gifts of support from our Relief Fund to churches in Southern California who lost their buildings in the fires. If you’d like to join us in more support to those who will be working to recover, please visit our website and make a gift to our Relief Fund.

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Welcome

Entering Procession (standing, sung by all) Hymn 371

“ Thou, whose almighty word” Moscow

The Opening Acclamation and Collect for Purity (standing)

Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Song of Praise (standing, sung by all) Hymn S 278

“Glory to God in the highest”

The Collect of the Day (standing)

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ’s glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The flowers adorning the altar are given to the glory of God and in memory of Edward Griffin Sheppard Jr.

Although few of his organ works survive, Nicolaus Bruhns was a leading organist of his generation. The Bach Obituary even cites him as a model for Johann Sebastian Bach’s compositions. His Prelude in E exemplifies traits of the North German Organ School, featuring thrilling pedal solos, surprising harmonies, toccata-like passages, and fugal sections.

Children ages three through eight are invited to meet a member of our ministry staff by the pulpit to be escorted to children’s chapel; they will return to the congregation following the Peace.

The Lesson (seated)

Isaiah 62:1-5

For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm (seated)

Psalm 36:5-10

Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, * and your faithfulness to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the strong mountains, your justice like the great deep; * you save both man and beast, O LORD.

How priceless is your love, O God! * your people take refuge under the shadow of your wings. They feast upon the abundance of your house; * you g ive them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the well of life, * and in your light we see light. Continue your loving-kindness to those who know you, * and your favor to those who are true of heart.

Chanted by the Choir to a psalm setting by Thomas Attwood.

Sequence Hymn (standing, sung by all) Hymn 533, v. 1

“How wondrous and great thy works, God of praise” Lyons

The Gospel (standing) John 2:1-11

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “ Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon (seated) The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

The Nicene Creed (standing)

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Who is the immortal Father, heav’nly blest, Holiest of holies, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Now we are come to the sun’s hour of rest, The lights of evening round us shine, We hymn the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit divine.

Worthiest art thou at all times to be sung with undefiled tongue, Son of our God, giver of life, alone: Therefore in all the world thy glories, Lord, they own.

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer B (standing)

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

“Hail, Gladdening Light,” composed by Sir John Stainer in 1872, is a serene choral setting of the ancient Christian hymn “Phos Hilaron.”

Traditionally sung during evening prayers, the hymn celebrates Christ’s light as a symbol of hope and peace. Stainer, a renowned English composer and organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral, infused the piece with rich harmonies and a flowing melody that reflect the text’s spiritual depth. Beloved for its beauty and accessibility, it remains a staple in church and concert repertoires.

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

Sanctus and Benedictus (standing, sung by all) Hymn S 128

“Holy, holy, holy”

Please kneel as you are able.

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and g ave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these g ifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and

his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Michael and all your saints, we may enter the e verlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the first born of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread (kneeling, sung by all) Hymn S 154

“Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia”

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

James Whitbourn’s 1999 choral piece

“Come to the wedding” draws inspiration from Jesus turning water into wine at Cana, exploring themes of celebration, transformation, and divine presence.

Renowned for his emotive choral works, the British composer blends traditional and contemporary styles. The interplay between a tenor solo and full choir adds depth and enhances the piece’s reflective tone.

Today’s postlude is G. F. Handel’s solemn “Fugue in A minor.” Its angular subject (starting with a major 7th leap), coupled with a slower tempo indication, results in some fierce contrapuntal writing.

The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979. The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.

Come to the wedding James Whitbourn

Into the vessel and turn it into wine, fragrant and fine.

Like Mary your mother, may we store in our hearts

The wonder and miracle of your grace.

- James Whitbourn (b. 1963)

The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all)

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
