I began this school year with a pair of forums open to all adults (recordings of the forums are available in the media section of our website). In those forums, I set the stage for the year ahead. Broadly speaking, we are honing what we do at Saint Michael. Our worship services will become better expressions of their particular style and tradition, as well as delivering a more consistent experience each week. Our education and formation offerings for all ages will connect from one year to the next with more intentionality and fluidity. And as we solidify our foundation, we will be able to welcome our friends and neighbors looking for the deep presence of God in Christ we share here. Worship is at the heart of who we are as Episcopalians, and I’m very excited to see how our worship life has begun to shift. This fall, you will see positive shifts in all of our sacred music as we welcome Jonathan Ryan, our new Director of Music and Organist, and Justin Brooks, our new Director of Modern Worship Music. We are also pleased to welcome Dr. Charlotte Kroeker, Executive Director of the Church Music Institute, as continued on page 31
Vicar Bill Murray in announcing the fund said, “The impact of this storm will be felt for years to come and the recovery will take many years as well. With this in mind, Saint Michael will keep this fund active for the foreseeable future as a way to reach out to those in need along the Texas coast.”
Rector Chris Girata reiterated Saint Michael’s longterm commitment to the recovery efforts. “In coming weeks and months, we will provide opportunities to collect and send aid, as well as coordinate short-term clean-up and mission trips to the most damaged communities,” he said. continued on page 31
Sermon Series Fall Preaching and Teaching Series Focuses on Exodus
Living Well Sermon Series Coming September 10 in Celebration In our complex, demanding world, we encounter many suggestions about what makes for the good life, but most are hollow. Beginning September 10, The Rev. Bob Johnston and The Rev. Dr. Bill Murray will begin a sermon series in the Celebration service that explores in the context of biblical wisdom what it is to live well; Living Well with our Priorities, our Bodies, the Environment, our Minds, and Money. The Celebration service is at 11:00 a.m. in Parish Hall.
A new preaching and teaching series, Choosing Freedom – Our Journey with God, will focus on The Book of Exodus and the choices the Israelites faced in their journey to freedom. On Sunday, September 10, the Rector Chris Girata will begin a seven week series of sermons at 9:00 and 11:00 in the Church exploring how the Israelites’ journey to freedom relates to choices we have on our journey with God. The “Choosing Freedom Chris Girata – Our Journey with God” series will continue at 10:00 in Saint Michael Chapel with The Rev. Mary Lessmann and The Rev. Tom Blackmon expanding on what the journey tells us about God and ourselves, how it plays out in the New Testament, and how it looks in our lives today.

What is heresy? What are the heresies of the church? How do we know if we believe the right thing (orthodoxy) or the wrong thing (heresy)? The Rev. Dr. Bill Murray will examine the heresies of the early church. The idea is to learn about our faith, explore what we do and do not believe, and even have fun reflecting on 2,000 years of Christian teaching and some wayward souls along the way. A Blessed and Costly Listening
Jane Patterson
Many people say that they wish they would get as clear a message from God as characters in the Bible seem to get: a voice speaking our own language straight into our ears, “Do this, do that.” But is there really such a big difference between then and now?
The opening chapters of the Gospel of Luke present several people of different ages and stations in life, each of them startled by the unexpected sense of a life-altering call from God: Elizabeth, Zechariah, Mary, John the Baptist, Anna, Simeon, Jesus. They answer with their ordinary lives as parent, priest, worker, prophet, widow, neighbor. This halfday retreat will engage the stories of these ancestors as they struggle to understand what they are called to, how much it will change them, and how much they will gain and lose along the way. Their doubts, fears, and courage challenge us to pay attention to the nudges, hints, desires, and invitations that draw us into the larger purposes of God in our own day. Jane Patterson is Associate Professor of New Testament and Director of Community Care at Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, and one of the authors of Calling All Years Good: Christian Vocation Throughout Life’s Seasons. Her previous work has concerned the role of metaphor in Paul’s letters, Keeping the Feast: Metaphors of Sacrifice in 1 Corinthians and Philippians. ..............

Warden’s Corner The Fall Agenda Welcome back to Saint Michael! It’s going to be an exciting and eventful fall. High on the priority list is the unveiling of our organizational initiatives! The Saint Michael and All Angels leadership team (Vestry, Clergy and Staff) have been working over the past few months to retool their work as leaders of our parish. By now, you have heard of the three Imperatives: Feed the Spirit, Find One, Build the Future. In your previous Archangels, Father Girata offered a wonderful reflection on how each of these Imperatives impacts our overall engagement with Saint Michael and All Angels and the greater community. It’s now time to unpack the Initiatives behind each of these Imperatives – which will help guide our work during the next 18 months and shape the overall priorities for the next several years. Eric Conner, Sr. Warden
+
During the month of September, you will see specific Initiatives explained under each Imperative. This will culminate in an exploration of our five year vision for the parish, which will tie together the entire process. Several upcoming tangible examples from this effort include implementation of an online member portal, additional small group offerings, revamped pledge statements, and an organizational restructuring of operations/staff to better support our parishioners. Of utmost importance is that the Initiatives will drive the annual budgeting process (not the other way around). Our parishioners deserve to know the priorities and what their contributions support.
•
Nominations just closed for our new Vestry slate and Diocesan delegates. We look forward to the parish meeting on October 29th to affirm and support these candidates.
•
Several changes in the worship services including a new children’s chapel, Discovery moving to the Parish Hall, Joy moving to the Saint Michael Chapel and the Celebration service starting at 11:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall (to coincide with the Rite I service in the Sanctuary).
•
Rebranding the youth program to EYC (Episcopal Youth Community) with a Jr. EYC for middle schoolers and a Sr. EYC for high schoolers.
It is an amazing time to be at Saint Michael. There are so many ways to engage your talents and gifts.
The Saint Michael and All Angels Vestry has been working during the past several months to retool its work as leaders of our parish. As part of that effort, the Vestry, along with the clergy and staff, has outlined major initiatives to help guide our work during the next 18 months, and which will shape the future over the next several years. During the coming months, you will see the Initiatives explained under each Imperative. You are invited to dig deeper into this work by asking questions, reading more on the website under Resources, and engaging with members of the staff, clergy, or Vestry to have thoughtful conversations about this work.

Farmers Market Saint Michael’s Farmers Market named “Best Neighborhood Farmers Market” By D Magazine This year Saint Michael’s Farmers Market has received notable accolades by being featured on Good Morning Texas, WFAATV; dubbed the “King Daddy of farmers markets by The Dallas Morning News, and now D Magazine’s 2017 “Best of Big D” as the Best Neighborhood Farmers Market.
In announcing the honor, D Magazine editor wrote, “For 13 months, we revisited old favorites and checked out the latest openings. We asked for suggestions, talked to the experts, and compared notes. Then, after several days of mostly civil debate, the editors of D Magazine determined that you are the best in North Texas…you make Dallas a better place.”
The market achieved remarkable growth during the 2017 season averaging more than 700 shoppers and more than 30 vendors each Saturday. The vendors can only offer edible products that are produced within a 150 mile radius of Dallas, assuring freshness and quality. Many have been serving the Saint Michael market for its entire six years.
The market is unique because it is managed and run strictly by church volunteers. Saint Michael makes no money from the market which is funded by donations from Friends of Saint Michael’s Farmers Market which cover the market expenses. Saint Michael’s Farmers Market creates a family-friendly place that invites and welcomes the greater community to spend a Saturday morning renewing friendships and making new ones. All of this is possible while shopping for fresh, delicious 12
Farmers Market food accompanied by the lively music presented voluntarily by Saint Michael musicians. The weekly markets end September 9, but its extended season will offer markets the third Saturday of October, November and December. And, it is never too late to volunteer to be a Market Greeter or become a Friend of Saint Michael’s Farmers Market.
I have loved your market and have enjoyed every minute of the experience. You have assembled the best and most highly regarded market in Dallas and I am proud to be a part of it. Scott Jones – Food Hugs Kitchens
What a wonderful thing you have created ‌ congratulations on being the BEST farmers market in Dallas! I am so proud of you and so happy for Saint Michaels and so thrilled that we have been part of the market since the beginning. Thanks for all you have done for us. Paula Lambert - Mozzarella Co

Pastoral Care Praying
Prayer is communicating with God. When the road of life gets steep, prayer gives us traction. At Saint Michael and All Angels there are prayer ministries to meet every need. www.saintmichael.org/pastoralcare/prayer ..............
Prayer Ministry Third Thursday monthly 6:00 p.m. Coke Activities Room Catered Light Supper September 21 — Our series opens with Youth Director, Lauren Wainwright, sharing thoughts about prayer needs of youth. How can we bear the joys, sorrows, anxieties, and fears of our youth? When we pray for them we walk beside them. (Youth Center) October 19 — The Rev. Mary Lessmann, Associate for Spiritual Growth, will discuss prayer and spiritual growth. Can our burdens become breakthroughs? Can trials become testimony? Discussion will help us look at burdens differently and prepare us for next month’s conversation on why prayer is burden sharing with others. November 16 — We pray when we feel overwhelmed. Seth Elliott, Age 22, was an ordinary college freshman athlete before cancer struck. With no strength, muscle mass, hair, or scholarship -- his world went dark. He will be joined by someone whose diagnosis left him powerless and in a wheelchair. Both saw God work in miraculous ways. An evening of personal sharing about tragedy / suffering / power of prayer. December 7 — Advent Liturgy of Remembrance and Light, Saint Michael Chapel. Come and remember loved ones and friends, giving thanks for their lives. We also give thanks that God’s light and truth are ours, by grace, daily.
January 18 — The Rev. Pam Theodore will discuss the “hidden richness” inside the Book of Common Prayer, especially the Daily Offices. She asks, “What do poems and prayers have in common? Both ask you to let go of assumptions . . . and listen.” February 23 — Society of St. John the Evangelist’s “Rules for Discernment.” Most Christians seek God’s guidance when making important decisions. But how do we learn to recognize God’s ways? In what ways does God’s Spirit usually direct us, and in what ways might we be tempted away from God’s choice? March 15 — In preparation for Maundy Thursday, the Prayer Team will host The Holy Hours. Our friend, Dana Juett who loved praying The Hours had planned to do this. Somehow, we think he will know these prayers are dedicated to him. If you seek wholeness and purity of heart, this is for you. April 19 – The Enneagram and Prayer: Mary Ann Webster, with Mary Ruth and Steve McKenney, will discuss how knowing yourself, strengths / weaknesses, points of pride and possession, fear / anxiety -- can usher you to prayer or inhibit prayer. Invigorating discussion! May 17 — Shrimp & Crawfish Boil with ALL the fixings. Simply the best! You will be surprised and delighted with authentic Cajun cooking! ..............

We believe that when two people come together in Holy Matrimony, the couple begins a new life filled with both joy and challenge. Mission Outreach Austin Street Shelter
Honduras Threads
The Austin Street Center provides emergency shelter and expert services to homeless men and women in Dallas. One night each month, Saint Michael serves a prepared meal to those at the shelter.
Honduras Threads is a nonprofit organization that supports women in rural Honduran villages by providing training, designs, supplies, donated fabrics, sales, and marketing of their beautiful hand-embroidered products including pillows, placemats, and table runners. All money from the sale of items is returned to the women who are transformed by earning money in their rural communities to educate their children and better the lives of their families.
We need volunteers for the following: •
• •
Cooking: September 5, 5:30-8:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall Kitchen - We will begin our time together with prayer and then cook a hot meal for the residents of Austin Street Shelter. Transporting the food: One person needed the morning of September 6. Serving at Austin Street: Our service at Austin Street Shelter begins at 5:30 p.m. on September 6 with setting up our supplies and preparing to dish out a warm meal to shelter residents.
..............
After 15 years in various stages of infancy, the Honduran Office of Development of the Social Sector of the Economy officially designated Honduras Threads a “company.” The formal designation of the five Threads co-ops with 45 members will allow the co-ops to ship their finished products to the U.S. at lower rates, purchase needed supplies without paying exhorbitant sales tax rates, and will allow significant changes in the way co-op members can run their operations.
Amistad Mission The Amistad Mission in Bolivia is an association of Christians dedicated to improving the physical and spiritual welfare of abandoned children by building friendship with God, each other, and the poor. This past summer Saint Michael’s high school youth participated in a mission trip to Casa Esperanza, one of Amistad’s eight houses where the children live. There they and the children played games, did arts-and-crafts projects, participated in Bible study productions. For more information, contact Maria D’Antoni (maria@ dantonipartners.com)

our organist for the 7:30 a.m. Sunday service, a very welcome addition. You will also hear new preaching series from the pulpit of our Sunday morning services, both in the church and in the Parish Hall. These preaching series will connect our worship experience from one Sunday to the next in ways that open up the scripture to us more deeply over time.
100% of the fund will be spent on those impacted by Hurricane Harvey and the massive flooding produced by the storm. It will be administered by Saint Michael’s Mission and Outreach Committee. Go to Saintmichael.org to give online or send a check to Saint Michael and All Angels with a notation to the Hurricane Harvey Fund.
As I have written in detail over the summer, much of this coming school year will focus on the goals that the Vestry, clergy, and staff have identified to lead us into the future. During the month of September, you will see how these high-level goals will take shape through specific initiatives. I invite you to dig deeper into this work by asking questions, reading more under the resources section of our website and by engaging with members of the staff, clergy, or vestry to have thoughtful conversations about this work.
Saint Michaelites were quick to respond to the plea for aid. On Saturday, September 2 around 200 Saint Michael members joined people from several faith communities at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church to package 250,000 shelf-stable meals that will be distributed to the hurricane survivors.
Most importantly, as we begin this school year, we are reminded just how precious life is and how grateful we are to share our lives with one another. We have all watched as Hurricane Harvey ravaged our South Texas neighbors. I’m sure many of you, like me, felt helpless at times. The sheer size of the damage is practically incomprehensible. Yet, we are called to help our neighbors in need and help we will! Since the hurricane hit Texas, we have created a hurricane relief fund to help the recovery efforts which will take months and even years. The work of recovery will be long and Saint Michael will be faithful to that work, so go to our website for ways to give, and stay tuned for additional opportunities to collect and send aid, as well as join short-term clean-up and mission trips to the most damaged communities. This is an exciting year for Saint Michael and I am continually grateful to be part of this community with you. I ask for your prayers for the entire Saint Michael family and the mission and ministry we do together. May the light of Christ continue to shine through us, a light in the darkness and hope for all!
