A LE T T ER F ROM DANIEL I am Daniel Thompson, the creator of Daniel Thompson Beauty, the first all Canadian eco-organic make up and skincare line. Daniel Thompson Beauty is actually the 14th line of cosmetics I have created. Generally, I was very much behind the scenes creating products for big name doctors, department stores and spas. In 2008 my business partner and head designer convinced me it was time to stand out of the shadows and put myself forefront with my own collection. The brand has since taken on a life of its own and we have kept rolling it out to consumers across Canada. In my other world I am an organic farmer — people always find that amusing — I like to grow certain foods and eat in a certain way. The brand is really an extension of that philosophy. Quality over quantity, healthier choice options and of course real provenance. What we find in cosmetics ingredients is that, usually, there is a lot of unnecessary filler used which has nothing to do with the overall performance of the product. Most cosmetics simply create quantity and sell as much as possible for the lowest possible price. Quality is way down on the list of considerations for these mass formulas. It is not that these fillers are actually harmful, it’s just that they detract from the quality of the raw ingredients thus increasing the risk of reaction and, of course, inhibiting the durability of the finished product. What I want women to know is that fewer ingredients actually means better quality when it comes to cosmetics. Daniel Thompson Beauty is the culmination of 20 years of experience. It is the next evolution of personal care products. Healthy choice products combined in a beautiful fashion presentation — my creations are pushing the boundaries of what healthy choice products should look like. Daniel Thompson Beauty will change the perception of healthy products. There is a myth, a misconception, that consumers can have healthy choices or they can have high fashion. My creations bring these two concepts together in a single offering. Unique in the market place, Daniel Thompson Beauty is truly one of a kind.

A BO U T DA NIEL T HOMP S ON Daniel Thompson began his career as a professional make up artist and paramedical aesthetician in 1993. In 2003 he founded Thompson Consulting specializing in product development for spas, plastic surgeons/dermatologists, and independent retailers. Daniel’s work can be seen in spas and medispas across Canada, in New York, Oslo and Dubai. In 2008 he launched Daniel Thompson Beauty. Daniel currently serves as a faculty member at Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning in The Business School. Daniel was the creator and host of The One Minute Makeover heard across Canada on the Standard Radio Network. He is a contributing writer to City Style and Living magazine and the online author of Beauty: BUSTED! for yummymummyclub.ca. Daniel is a trusted media resource and has appeared in The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, The Financial Post, Lou Lou, Flare, Fashion, Hello, Holt Renfrew Trend Report, Wish, Elevate and Best Health. He has been featured on Entertainment Tonight, CityLine and Breakfast Television.

S T E P - BY- ST E P PROD UC T D ES C RIPTION P RO D U CTIO N P RO C E S S Each product concept is created by Daniel Thompson personally and the physical execution is done by a small group of hand chosen professionals who work with him side-by-side ensuring his vision is brought to realization. The production process is in three parts:
S ECTIO N O N E — CO N C E PT 1 Every single formula, shade and product category is conceived by Daniel alone. It begins with his inspiration design. This design is usually based on his interactions with his private clients. Feedback from these women inform him of the needs and desires women have in relation to their cosmetics. Daniel also derives inspiration from unlikely places. As an artist his inspiration can come from something as simple as a sunset (The Collection Mineral Metropolis was inspired by the sun setting over the Toronto skyline), his passion for farming (The Collection Garden of Minerals was inspired by my experiences learning to grow vegetables), decadent textures (The Collection Mineral Sundae was inspired by an amazing dessert he was served) and the most recent collection, Celestial Minerals, was inspired by his reading some amazing work being done in the field of astro-physics. 2 A concept is written, in long hand, describing shades, textures, finishes and overall visual appeal for each product, Daniel writes how each product interconnects to the next and how each product addresses the inspiration points. 3 Using colour charts, presented runway designs from major fashion houses and the specific trend colours in each season, Daniel then takes the written concept and creates full collection branding to reflect these points of inspiration into physical make up products. This includes shade charts, product sketches, intended usage etc.

S ECTIO N T WO — R E FI N E M E N T 1 Daniel works with a core team of developers including his chemist, production manager, designer and packaging developer. Each one is given a different section of the concept to create prototypes that fit Daniel’s vision: the chemist designs formulas that are based on the written descriptions of each product, the designer creates the branded look for the product prototypes, the production manager ensures each component is sourced, according to Daniel’s exacting standards for ingredients and recyclable nature, and the packaging developer ensures all packaging elements work in conjunction with the formula and the required recycling needs of Daniel’s core mandate. 2 Daniel then uses the submitted prototypes on selected clients and conducts feedback surveys. From these surveys several prototypes are eliminated and the remaining few are critiqued, by Daniel, for texture, durability, ease of use, ease of understanding, colour payoff and overall appeal. 3 The feedback is then sent back to the development team who refine the formulas and presentation based on Daniel’s critique. From here a final version is submitted, to Daniel, for approval. 4 Daniel personally approves every final prototype and then names the formula, colour and position within the larger Daniel Thompson Beauty offering.
S ECTIO N T H R E E — M A N U FACTU RI N G 1 Physical manufacturing occurs roughly four weeks prior to being needed for market introduction. Daniel personally ensures all relevant components are in play (raw ingredients, packaging, branding, photography, etc.) for manufacturing to commence. 2 Manufacturing is done in one of four actual locations, based on the legal requirements for each product. Health Canada demands certain manufacturing processes are used to ensure consumer safety and as such Daniel Thompson Beauty contracts licenced manufacturing facilities to manufacture the approved prototypes into market ready products in accordance with the law. The facilities mix the batches of product for assembly. These facilities are all located in Canada or the United States. 3 Each manufactured product is then assembled (finished assembly), by hand, at the DTB headquarters in Toronto. Each finished product is packaged and completed, by hand, on site at the DTB warehouse. This process is done by Daniel and his team. The DTB team is comprised of 10 people to carry out the entire production process.

G REEN All DTB formulas are free from micronized particles, adhere to a strict “Restricted Ingredients� list of ingredients of 15 objectionable synthetic ingredients* and all included are naturally derived when allowed by law. All DTB primary packaging meets or exceeds blue bin approval recycling standards. Every primary package is free from mechanical working parts; which allow for inclusion in curb side recycling programs. Additionally all primary packaging is decorated with biodegradable ink (non sulphur based). All DTB secondary packaging is printed on paper approved for recycling.
