Ask

Dan

Each issue, we’re going to let you write in questions for me , the inhouse design guru at SMagazine. This issue we’re focusing on great garden ideas and tips for creating the perfect garden. I’m quite an avid gardener myself and I know that nothing tastes better than Bolognese sauce made from home-grown tomatoes, so I want to give you the tips you need to grow the perfect produce.

22

OUT OF SPACE?

Dear Dan , My husband is a creative soul, and has always used the spare room in our semi-detached townhouse as his art studio and study. But I’m expecting, and whilst that’s a wonderful thing, we need to convert his art studio into a nursery. He needs his study though—he’s always at work in it! I convinced him to use the shed at the bottom of the garden, but he says he’ll be too cooped up. Do you have any ideas that’ll help us?

Sincerely, Cooped In

Cooped In , Convincing your husband to use the shed is a great idea. When it all gets a bit too much (with a baby in the house, it will) he can go down the garden and seek some quiet down there. The exposed brickwork and wooden floor give the room an arty charm, and the room clearly has two areas for work and art. In a room like this, clutter is good, and you can see that with the various pieces of clutter around the room. The large windows let in natural light, so your husband won’t have to worry about feeling cooped in either. Thanks for getting in touch!

From Dan :) 23

BOBBING ALONG

Dear Dan , I moved to Isla Paradiso after graduating from university to start my own resort. I moved onto a houseboat because I love nothing more than the water. However, I’m a bit stuck. My barge is only small and I want garden space. How on earth can I fit a lush garden onto my houseboat?

Sincerely, Floater

Floater, Here’s what I’ve done for you. If you go down to your local DIY store you can buy artificial turf, and that’s what we’ve used here. All three levels on your houseboat have a small garden area, so don’t worry about that. Downstairs is a small living/dining area, and you have a separate bedroom upstairs. On top of the bedroom you have a few skylights and your hull too.

BLOOMING BRILLIANT Dear Dan , I have just moved into a beautiful house overlooking the city. I’m pleased with it, but I hate the garden. I want a place that overlooks the city, and it needs to be in the shade. I also really want lots of plants to surround the seating area. I know it sounds like a lot, but I’m...particular.

Sincerely, Bloomer

Bloomer, Your job was also the perfect opportunity to write another article (see it further into the issue). I’ve put two comfortable patio sofas outside, and there’s a fire pit for those cool summer evenings. There’s plenty of plants surrounding the area too, and your large patio doors look out onto the small patio area. To top it off, there’s a beautiful view out to the city.

Sincerely, Floater

Zerbu is the genius behind many of the game-changing mods out there for The Sims 3, and we were lucky enough to interview him about his mods, how he plays the game and what he’s doing next.

52

What got you into modding? What was your first mod?

on Ultimate Careers.

When I saw all the great mods that other people had made, I became interested in making my own. To start with, I just made tuning mods, which are really easy to make. I later took up scripting and made a few smaller mods, like displaying notifications of a Sim's "biography" when an active Sim meets them or manipulating motives using lifetime happiness points. Once I had learned the modding skills I needed, I started work

Aside from being able to control Sims and tell their stories at work, one of the main motivations for creating Ultimate Careers was that despite a Sim's career being a major part of their life, it did very little to define their overall story. I made Ultimate Careers hoping it would change the way player's felt about their Sim's career, and that it was more significant than just going into a building for a few hours. In the first version of

the mod, Sims would gain performance from "Work Normal" and "Work Hard" interactions on a few objects. I posted a few preview videos of the mod onto YouTube and it became far more popular than I expected, even being promoted on major fansites like SimsVIP and SimCookie. After releasing the mod, I thought of how I could improve it, then began work on version 2, which eliminated the need for "Work Normal" and "Work Hard" interactions and instead scans the Sims' interaction queues

and increases performance based on what their current interaction is (and whether they're currently performing it). In version 3, the mod was expanded to support open schools. Version 4 was changed to make the mod more user friendly by changing the way careers are enabled and disabled, and also added the option to assign individual Sims to lots. What is your favourite thing about The Sims? My favourite thing about The Sims is that it gives you the freedom to create your own stories and act out any fantasy you want. If you could add one thing to the game, what would it be? I'm pretty sure about 90% of

people would say the same thing, but it would be a more advanced business system like the one they had in The Sims 2 Open For Business.

proved expressiveness of the Sims, since The Sims 3 was really lacking in that area. What do you have planned for us next?

When did you start playing The Sims?

I'm not working on anything at the moment. I might have I started playing the original something new in the future, The Sims for console when I but there's nothing planned was about 11, and had been at the moment. I do hope to getting most of the console be able to mod for The Sims games since then. In the hot summer months, your garden will most likely become the hub of entertaining guests inside your home. We took a drab patio with two patio chairs and a fire pit and turned it into something to be proud of.

SIDETRACKED

FOR A SECOND It’s an old game, but it’s still brilliant. Inside this issue’s Sidetrac ked For A Second, we’re going to quickly talk about Rollercoaster Tycoon 3. If you play The Sims because you love the creativity, then this game is perfect for you. It’s got an amazing sandbox mode in which you can build the best theme park you can dream up, or you can play the scenarios and careers where you have to earn your money fair and square. As the name suggests, you can build huge

theme parks full of custom built rollercoasters. You can choose the type of rollercoaster, be it a water slide or a suspension rollercoaster. With the Wild expansion pack, you can place animal enclosures and safari trains. It might be almost ten years old, but it’s certainly an amazing game, and worth a look. Besides, you can get all three games (the base and two expansions) for about fifteen pounds now! 

Ever wondered how SMagazine happens? If not, read this anyway (we had a page to spare). It starts with the editor taking a trip to some Sims 3 CC sites (thesimsresource.com was used for most creations inside this issue). Each time he finds something, it’s into Microsoft Publisher to write an article about it. This is where everything goes down, be it the designing of the cover or the writing of the articles. He might take to Twitter to ask people what they want to see (follow us @smagazineofcl) and he then tends to find more ideas from there. Once the issue is finished, he checks everything, and then exports it into a .PDF using Microsoft Publisher. Then it’s to Issuu.com to upload the magazine, and then to literally every single social network to advertise the magazine. And, then, you get to read it...like you’re doing right now! G
