DESIGN BRIEF

HOUSE FOR A PROFESSIONAL MECHANIC ABOUT THE CLIENT: Aqib is a 31-year-old mechanic, married with no children. He has been training as a mechanic since he was 16 and has now achieved his goal to become a car mechanic. When he started his path into the field, he used to live with his parents so no private space for working was available. He started by using his employer’s garage for overtime work and used to give him a little percentage out of his earning, thuscovering the used energy expenses. However, during all these years he feels like he has got enough knowledge to pursuit his dream of becoming independent, setting his own business. Since married with Neha, a marriage photographer. The workload for him it’s making hard for them to live their marriage, therefore they’ve both decided to give it a cut and start their lives from zero, therefore, they are looking to buy a house in Salford. He is going to work mostly from home so they have precise requirements to comply with. Their design requirements are the following: - A large open lab/ garage space to work in. Better if at ground level, making it more accessible for vehicles movement; - The garage space must have a toilet and a small office space; - normal sized kitchen and an open living area, with a laundry isle. - A double bedroom and a medium sized bedroom. Both facing the canal, thus attracting natural light in during the day. - The garage space must have enough height to work with the machinery. - the garage’s envelope must be well insulated thus reducing sound transmittance into the dwelling; better if not near the night area (bedrooms) - a small studio space for here to work, she’s a wedding photographer; - a space, perhaps with a connection to the external area, to practice M.Thay for him. It can be used for general fitness purpose from here or friends as well. - The front garden must have trees to maximize privacy as large glazed openings are used in both day and night areas.

The proposed design consists in the ground floor using mainly concrete while the upper floor features containers as main structural component. The openings are going to be dark ( blag or grey) to underline and reflect the personality of its owner (mechanic). Furthermore, as the site used to be a part of the Dock station, this contract of metal with solid heavy contrete, can give the idea of a ship waiting to be loaded up on the canal side. The walls enclosing the stairs could be going up and over the roof to enhance the idea of a signal mast on top of a ship. However, there are steel beams embracing the internal garden placed in front of the property (south facing facade), as shown in precedent study.

This property emphasises openess to the exterior through structural and design choices. The front garden, embraced by the steel beams, offers privacy to che living area and to the bedrooms on the second floor but at the same time it introduces to the external space. Daylight is particularly good as long horizontal opening are located in the rooms facing the garden.

Grillagh Water House pb-architects 2014 Woodland, Ireland

This is an award winning design which consists in 4 shipping containers merged into upper structure shown in the picture at the left. This to keep low the costs and meet the low budget limits. The upper floor has dark metal all around and the lower floor has corten steel cladding, thus to promote its aesthetic. The way its openings are organised promotes inside out relation with the rural surrounding.
