WAIST IT! High-waisted pants have a feminine and flirty look but sometimes hard to wear if you're trying to mask your middle. Enter the “resort fashion trend” that will solve that problem (and make you look up to two sizes smaller): PAPER-BAG-WAISTED PANTS: High waisted with a surplus of fabric around your midsection. Trousers with a paper-bag waist cinch the waist in and offer some volume on the top and bottom, so you can tuck in a top without feeling too tight or exposed. Belt it or not—it's up to you.

HISTORY An extension to the classic high waisted pants, the paperbag waist style came into limelight in 2006. It was initially culottes with ruched waists that gave way to paperbag. Gradually, brands like Emporio Armani and Bottega Veneta started incorporating the style into their runways shows around 2008-09. Off and on the style had been spotted in the streets as a part of comfort chic. It was in January 2017 that Sienna Miller was spotted in a pair of paperbag waisted pants that set the ball rolling. March 2017 – Kendall Jenner was spotted wear a bright canary yellow pair of paperbags from her DropOne collection with sister Kylie.

CELEBCHECK January 2017 - undoubtedly a time of fashion fatigue. Heavy coats, scarves, and the ubiquitous black tights tend to dominate our wardrobes more than we’d like them to. But when Sienna Miller of G.I. Joe and Factory Girl fame stepped out in a pair of effortless trousers in London, it made us rethink the power of a pair of statement-making pants. The oversize trousers featured a high paper-bag waist—an unusual, flattering silhouette.

Chrissy Teigen pulled off the paperbag waist look at The Hollywood Reporter’s beauty dinner while Elle Fanning did the look from Rodarte’s Fall collection. Off and on since 2006, the style has been on the runway in subtle doses. It picked up earlier this year with Sienna Miller sporting the look along with Kendall and Kylie’s collection DropOne that made the look feature outside the runway too. It has been trending ever since, with brands like Topshop, H&M, Mango, Zara, etc. introducing the paperbag waist in their basics. The recent collection, DropOne, March 2017, featuring highlights like faux-denim bombers and high-waisted paper bag sweat pants in bright, bold colours, reflects a highend version of that street style 90s throwback cropping up everywhere right now. MARISSA WEBB Marissa Webb’s Spring Summer 2017 featured another approach towards the paperbag waist trend. Incorporating the style onto leather cropped pants and front slit skirts, Webb’s collection inspired celebrities and general audience alike. Focusing on the high-waisted aspect, adding the ruched hem adds volume and makes up for a gorgeous silhouette to the feminine form. Webb’s new line-up will work well for those who want an accessible, uncomplicated wardrobe that can be mixed and matched to make sharp yet eclectic everyday looks.

Harper’s Bazaar Serbia was one of the first magazines to display paperbag waist pants with another trending style: mile long belt. Renewed focus on the waist, the style has been heavily influencing the trousers category, with self-belt, drawstring and corseted silhouettes all appearing. Fendi’s Resort 2017 collection features an array of bold paperbag waisted trousers.
