Blockchain: What You Need to Know By: Ray Sylvain | Sign On the Go | https://www.signonthego.us/
B
oca Raton, Fla – August 30, 2018 - With the continued expansion of global e-commerce, the need for trust or the ability to authenticate every transaction that is being processed through the internet is a must. How can trust/authenticity be improved for the billions of transactions that happen every minute, globally? Blockchain Technology. Yes. This technology is not all about cryptocurrency. Its utility goes beyond the cryptocurrency market. Business owners and decision-makers will need to know the truth and most importantly the future of blockchain. Choosing the right team is one of those make-or-break decisions that can either be the foundation of a successful business, or it’s complete undoing. How does blockchain work?
It is a decentralized ledger based on blockchain, which in turn, is based on line of blocks and every one of these blocks is a tree of recorded transactions. The key thing to remember here is a decentralized ledger can be anything of value that one or more parties will need to track and/or validate. So, it is not just cryptocurrency.
12
| Fall/Winter 2019
When a series of blocks are pulled together, a blockchain is now formed. All information on that blockchain can be encrypted and secured if desired. Another key thing here is that the blockchain that was formed is now part of a public network. A blockchain does not have to be on a public network. It can be on a private network as well. This network has multiple nodes. Every node will retain a copy of that blockchain. To simplify this – this network should be considered as one distributed database. It is more or less a data structure, that has been established, which makes it nearly impossible to change at a later date without altering. Because the hashing algorithm of a block consists in part of a hash of the previous block, and that block has a hash of the previous block before that, this makes it difficult as the time passes to inject into some other blocks. That blockchain can be validated by anyone at any time without giving up personal information.
“
A blockchain does not have to be on a public network. It can be on a private network as well.
What are the possible utilities of blockchain for businesses in general? There is currently a significant amount of use cases in this fast-evolving space. For example, a small business will be able to receive payments for work completed through its digital wallet. Another key thing to remember here is blockchain does not mean the same thing as cryptocurrency, it is meta-level – cryptocurrencies are based on the blockchain concept; digital wallet is a trait of currency, it has nothing to do with blockchain. An even more important note, there can be currencies without the wallet capability. Doing business with partners on a network will become a more trusted endeavor, because everyone on that network will have the needed validation available. Therefore, a small business with blockchain, will be able to avoid the exposure of future fraudulent transactions. Another way this technology is being used today is when multiple parties enter into an agreement and the instrument was processed through an e-signature platform, the parties involved will have the ability to prove the identity of the stored document. In this data structure, only the hash of the document file is stored, then anyone can compute the hash of that file again using a well-known algorithm to validate the existence of such hash in blockchain. So, when the executed document is published to the blockchain, it can be run through a cryptographic hashing algorithm, which produces a short hash for the executed document. If any successful attempt was made to even remove a single word in the document, the hash of the document will be totally different. Therefore, eliminating any attempt for fraudulent activity.
What are the current drawbacks of blockchain? At this juncture, the network capacity is the main issue. The BITCOIN network can only process seven (7) transactions per second (TPS). The size limit for a block is only one megabyte (1MB). Today, the major credit card merchants can process at least 1,700 TPS. The BITCOIN community is currently working on this important issue and progresses are already being recorded where a block has grown from 1MB to 8MB. It seems that this issue will soon be resolved.deal. After all, they will be representing your brand with every customer they interact with and every word of content they create. The blockchain technology is disruptive. It is here to stay. It may be the technology that will provide the ultimate transparency that is truly needed in the e-commerce space alone. The cost avoidance in terms of fraudulent transactions that may be generated have not yet being assessed; however, one could predict that number will be in the billions of dollars. Learn more or see a live use case of the blockchain technology in an e-signature platform, visit https://signonthego.us

The Most Important Business in the World by: Jesse L. Lee, Jr. | Editor-in-Chief
W
hen your business idea crystallizes, becomes legal, and begins the journey to become profitable your business becomes the most important business in the world. Why? Because you’re in charge and how well your business does reflect entirely upon you, your business acumen, and your leadership skills. You have vetted the market research, developed pro-forma financial statements, business, and financial models, and formed a small team of experts or are working with business intermediaries to help you in your (ad)venture. Only a few open issues remain that involve matters that are uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. You’ve made it, congratulations! You may not feel as if this is a proper time to celebrate. Despite, your business is officially off the ground and running. Now the task-at-hand is to grow a sustainable organization, increase sales, and manage your resources. Consider, for instance, that there are valuable lessons to learn along the way. What you may believe to be true about your business, your industry, and how to increase value for your current customers may be biased. If so, your assumptions may be distorted, and the business outcomes you hope for may miss the mark. Problem-solving, reflecting on daily activities, and allowing your creativity to flourish is vitally important. The degree to which you are knowledgeable and understand accounting, finance, economics, sales, marketing, information technology, human resources, purchasing, research, and development will enable you to make the wisest decisions. You will want to both invest in your business as well as in yourself to grow and become the best organizational leader possible. Be encouraged. You can do it!

SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTERS OF SANTA CLARA COUNTY Creating Jobs, Innovation and New Businesses for The County’s Economic Growth The Small Business Development Center Silicon Valley and the Small Business Development Hispanic Satellite are well-respected technical assistance providers which is part of a nation-wide network of SBDCs. The function and purpose of the SBDCs are to help small businesses grow through one-on-one expert advising, providing more jobs and increased revenues for the counties within they operate. Small businesses are the backbone of the US economy and are the largest job creators in most of the country. Santa Clara County, often referred to as Silicon Valley, is the base for a number of global enterprises that tend to overshadow the presence of local small businesses. Yet it is the local small businesses that provide much of the infrastructure that supports Silicon Valley companies and the communities in which they reside. They add to the character, cultures and lifestyle that make up the fifteen cities and unincorporated areas of the county and beyond. This program is partially funded by the Small Business Administration (SBA) and matched by the County of Santa Clara to propel the economy. Contributing to the match has been support by Citi Foundation, the Foundation of Wells Fargo Bank and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Silicon Valley.

ow that you have your fabulous design piece completed by your graphic design professional, you need to request the correct file types to store away for future use. The most important file that you should have in your possession, at the close of your project, is your “Source” or “Master” file. Your source file has the original text, images, and graphics for your design piece, and without this file, you may not be able to make changes or updates to your design in the future. Source files also allows your completed graphic design work to be resized as needed, without losing visual quality. It is especially useful for large format prints such as building signs, tradeshow booths, and billboards. Some design professionals will include this file as part of your contract and others may hold ownership of these files and release them to you at an added cost. You should negotiate this matter with your design professional before starting your project.

We Become Our Choices by : Marcie Anderson | Marcie Anderson | www.marcie-anderson.com

hallenges we face in today’s world both individually and collectively are at a staggering level, indicating something needs to be addressed and sooner rather than later. Issues such as anger and violence in the workplace, in our homes, our schools, and within ourselves are bringing unimaginable and horrific outcomes. We can no longer pretend that escaping into our social media caves is going to improve the situation. There is an increase in what feels an epidemic level of anxiety, depression, stress, addiction, isolation and overwhelm. Can habitualseparation, fear, lack of compassion, love, and negative self-judgment take its toll? If so, what can be done now both individually and collectively to bring about healing and hope? If we take a step back from ourselves and if we agree that we apply the “you are what you eat” rule, how can there be any other outcome than a negative one if we look at our landscape of how we are living and the choices we are making each day, each moment. If we are feeding ourselves media, gossip, negative beliefs about ourselves and others, compounded by a festering ignoring of our basic primal need to feel and give love and compassion, acceptance, to have a sense of inclusion, and that we have a purpose, the recipe is one for disaster. An introduction into the space I work in allows a spark and a voice to valuable, impactful and practical tools to help reestablish a sense of confidence, presenting in-the-moment effective remedies that work. It’s time to take the training wheels off. We don’t need another self-help book. Change of any kind takes energy, focus, and intention, and in the case of positive change, it takes a little more. It’s time to bring some information to the table because true healing, balance, and empowerment cannot be won by talking. If you are seeking change outside it

must first start from within yourself. Through a collaborative, holistic approach of East and West to help reveal the inner self-landscape of both acute and chronic blocks or challenges, there is a so-called “reboot” that takes place. It’s kind of like when you were a kid, and your street nerf football game wasn’t going the way you liked so you yelled out, “do-over,” this is like that, exactly, minus the football.
When we face waves of extremes, and we do not possess the tools to implement to get us off the manic proverbial hamster wheel, then we make bad choices. Our parents told us too many times, “make good choices,” so what happened and where did we start to derail, and why? There is no separation between the at-home you, the workplace you, and then out with friends you. Of course, we assume different tasks and responsibilities in each of these situations, but that’s not where the focus lies. Here is an example. You had a sleepless night and rolled out of bed in the morning with a pounding headache. You stumbled downstairs to fetch a fresh cup of coffee, and you notice the dog has made a game of the full decomposing trash that someone unnamed forgot to take out last night. You get stuck in mangled traffic, and you get to work late. Now you have to stay in for a work lunch to get that project finished by today, instead of being able to have lunch with your friend who is never in town, but who is now in town only for today. How do you feel? What tools do you have to manage your way off the dark, negative road that you are on? What is your self-talk at this point, negative or positive? How do you get yourself out of this undesirable tailspin?
from our hearts, that’s where the magic happens. That spark alone fosters positivity, inspiration, clarity, peace, creativity, and ease in the sense of self. Operating from this place, each decision, thought, intention and action hold an infinite power that has the potential to move mountains. It is a choice in each moment to choose either positive or negative, and it is a choice to boundary how much time you spend watching the news, or who much time you spend with your family, out in nature, or in peaceful reflection. It is a choice to forgive and move on, or have that issue bind you, limits you, and create physical problems. It is a choice to believe in yourself and not to allow low- ceiling thinking to harbor your dreams. There are limitless positive possibilities to be had. It is a choice whether you choose love over fear. Each moment is a choice activated by your will regardless of the past. What do you want to create? What are you ready to let go of that no longer serves you? Positive, lasting change requires some discipline, but you don’t have to go it alone. Welcome more laughter, more ease and flow of things in your life. You matter and your choices matter in a more profound way than imagined. We are all in this together. #choosewisely
“
The time is now to bring our focus back from fear to love. If you believe at all in the law of attraction, and in that what you intend, what you think, and what energy is driving your actions and choices matters, you are correct. When we can, with consistency, bring our focus to integrity, truth, human kindness, patience, forgiveness, and being heart-centered, our world opens up fantastically. Any real success involves unity, teamwork, and offers a sense of belonging for all. We are not only our mind, and when we choose to come

Clay Bandy Bay Area’s “Wonder Boy” Premiere Promoterr by : Margaret A. Jackson | AM 1220 KDOW & BOTE |www.kdow.biz Radio Show
L
ook up in the sky, is it the Wonder Boy of the Bay Area touting fresh experiences in local events at favorite locations such as the Glass House, the Corinthian Ball Room, and other Epic Venues’ locations. Clay Bandy has been crowned the Premiere Promoter at downtown San Jose’s most popular venues the Glass House and the Corinthian Ballroom owned by Gene Campbell, Epic Venues. Bandy is the make it happen guy or Wonder Boy for event coordinators, local bands, entertainers, wedding coordinators, corporate event planners, and the likes. If the Wonder Boy can’t do it, it might not be able to get done. He is an entrepreneur and the owner of Outthebox Entertainment. The Small Business Concierge Magazine sat down with Bandy at the Glass House to talk about his vision for disrupting Silicon Valley with fresh, new, and exciting event experiences that guests will walk away talking about for years to come. Business, corporate, and professional event planners are a few of the many professionals that want their event to go off without a hitch from strong guest attendance to the overall entertainment adventure. How does an event start from nothing to the talk of the town? Clay “the Wonder Boy” Bandy and his event insight were able to give us a tour of how he thinks when producing and promoting an event.

| | Fall/Winter 2019
Margaret Jackson: Clay you are being dubbed as the Wonder Boy of Silicon Valley the Premiere Promoter in San Jose the Capital of Silicon Valley, why are you so popular and why are your events so successful? Clay “the Wonder Boy” Bandy: It’s funny. I never think of it like that. I think of it as having an extensive network that is important. The turnout that I have had and successes are due to the partnerships and relationships that I have developed over the years. I make decisions on how well we work together based on personality, skill, and communication. If we can do those things well, we can do other things well together. For us to, work well together, as a team, we must communicate. Margaret Jackson: Tell me about your events, what is the experience? Clay “the Wonder Boy” Bandy: Well, mainly, my focus is bringing live bands and live shows consistently in San Jose. I am choosing seasoned musicians and bands that have a larger following that the community wants to see and that they are working in and around the Bay Area. For example, if it is a Latin Salsa Band such as “Latin Heat” they have a great following, and they put on a great show. Regardless of the genre of music, my goal is to bring in great bands. When you come into the beauty and visual of the location, we have a great staff, top-notch attentive bartenders, and our sound team is ensuring that our guests and patrons have a great experience. The entertainers are going to perform, play well, and give you the show that they have developed. During the Jazz festival, we had Tony Lindsay 11 time Grammy winner with Santana. Lindsay’s band Spangalang experience was terrific. Each musician has a fantastic talent and to feel that electrifying experience that they bring across on stage is phenomenal.
Margaret Jackson: What variety of professional events are available to the business community? Are there some differences in your events? Clay “the Wonder Boy” Bandy: My events range from weddings, holiday parties, graduations, proms, corporate meetings, and corporate parties an array of many types of events. A corporate event planner or coordinator comes into the building, and they see just the building. I paint a picture of “if you can conceive it” we can produce it. What is the need and we work together toward making it happen based on their budget? We dress up the place the way that they envisioned it, maybe that’s aerialists hanging from the ceiling, props, elegant roundtable dinner, award ceremony staging, and musical ambiance that paired with the event. I am paying close attention to the details, and the success of my functions is because I stay involved from beginning to the end. I walk the event to ensure that everything is going according to the plan. Margaret Jackson: What are corporate events missing? Clay “the Wonder Boy” Bandy: Many times it’s how we plan. Often the details of the event are missing. Always stay aware of the features and keep communicating with your planners, team, and what worked and didn’t work at previous events. As I better understand the goals, I can help ensure a successful event. Margaret Jackson: You are a 40 and younger entrepreneur, and you are on the rise. Where do you see yourself going in 2019? Clay “the Wonder Boy” Bandy: Establish awareness with the business, the small business community, families, and couples. You have to touch the people. My goal is to continue to build the location of the Glass House with this Premiere Promoter position I want them to think of Clay Bandy, the Glass House or Outthebox Entertainment. Emotion has to connect them to the event to keep them talking about it and wanting to come back.
Margaret Jackson: The Glass House Epic Venues brand image and the name are recognizable. What are you doing about the negative undertones that it has had in the past? What are you bringing fresh and new to the table? Clay “the Wonder Boy” Bandy: In my experience, you always have challenges this is no different. I love challenges; it helps me expand and become better. In the past, the Glass House experience has had less than expected outcomes. To change that is to be consistent with the excellent services that I provide, quickly make adjustments, quickly make turnarounds, and make any event experience memorable. Patrons want to come back to a consistent highlevel experience and to raise the bar no matter what the previous experience and improve upon the customer’s experience. We have different types of events and training conferences. We have had the Teachers Association of San Jose about 600-800 in attendance and fashion shows with San Jose City College. We cater to any size of the event and make it work for you.
Clay “the Wonder Boy” Bandy: Awareness, Listening, and Execution
Margaret Jackson: You are going to implement something new tours, tell us about that? Clay “the Wonder Boy” Bandy: We are doing tours now, but I would like to expand from one-on-one tours to exclusive group tours with coordinators and planners create partnerships. I want them to close their eyes and dream about the potential of the location. When we find that right fit, we can give that 100% excellent service, vendor communication, and vendor coordination, and the day of the event customer is stress-free.

Margaret Jackson: Explain it to us? Clay “the Wonder Boy” Bandy: Be aware of what someone is saying and read a little into it without overdoing it. Stay alert. Keep your eyes and ears open; keep your mouth closed. You must listen to what your client is saying. Be a good listener. Now, execute. I know you have given me a nickname “Wonder Boy.” One of my nicknames that I am known for is Clay “Make It Happen”Bandy. It sticks because I do not accept no for an answer. I believe that there has got to be a way to get it done. Execution is important, and you have to get it done. In my head, you are in my home; you have to have a great experience in the best way possible. The right execution is essential.
“
One of my nicknames that I am known for is Clay “Make It Happen”Bandy.
Margaret Jackson: What do you want people to say when they leave a Glass House, a Corinthian Ballroom, or any event that you produce? Clay “the Wonder Boy” Bandy: I want them to say, “Wow this was an amazing event! I have to come back here; this is a beautiful location. ” I want to get them involved in our social media and experiencing more of our events. I want customers to prepare and anticipate to enjoy themselves at Epic Venues events. Margaret Jackson: I am excited! Clay “the Wonder Boy” Bandy: Absolutely! Yes, Margaret, let’s do it! I love this business and working with the community to make an impact, to make a difference, to give a great experience. Allowing other small businesses and Fortune 500 companies, to see and experience an event center to have their events and we are going to show it to them together. Let’s do it. I am sold. Margaret Jackson: Who is accountable if a customer does not have a great event or experience? Clay “the Wonder Boy” Bandy: It always falls on the shoulder of the person responsible for helping to put the event together. I take full responsibility from the start. Customers need to know that you are going to make adjustments to correct anything that may occur to ensure a great experience. Margaret Jackson: What would you say to potential customers? Clay “the Wonder Boy” Bandy: Come to take a look and let’s see how we can work together to make your event an epic experience.

I lost some of my eyesight when I was 14 months old. A frustrated adult hit my head on something while violently shaking me. I received medical attention 10 days later. My recovery is extraordinary. Statistics for a shaken baby syndrome or traumatic head injury are for children under the age of two show how fatal these injuries can be. Resilience is key to my survival. he Small Business Concierge Digital Magazine is impacting the global community. If you missed “Unfolding the Small Business Concierge Magazine and Pancakes Part I” article, it is in our Spring 2018 Small Business Concierge, Silicon Valley Digital Magazine Edition. We are breaking the rules to address you the audience directly; it is an opportunity to build up hope and to encourage the freedom to dream again. Dreamers and visionaries need a safe place to envision their dreams and to showcase them when they have become a reality. IHOP restaurant was the safe place that I used to develop the hope of cultivating strategies, tactics, and plans to become a problem solver for the entrepreneurs, emerging small businesses, and the growth of small businesses. Unfolding the Small Business Concierge Magazine took one foot in front of the other over and over again until the digital magazine was a reality. The Small Business Concierge Digital Magazine is here to stay to give your small business voice, a 34

mass-media platform. It takes courage to build a dream and finding the right team to help bring it to reality. It takes money that may be hard to find, but it is out there somewhere; your job is to budget the cost and get it. At some point, you have to say, “I have got to do this!”. Your dream is the answer to someone else’s problem. Unfolding the Small Business Concierge Digital Magazine started years ago over a stack of strawberry pancakes at IHOP. All I wanted to accomplish was to help the small business owner win more. Dream again, make and learn from mistakes, and fight to bring your vision to reality. Convince potential customers that your product and service is the best buy. Developing the customer base means winning the customers through marketing frequency and consistency in your advertising. It is the lifeline to growing and sustaining a business. If you think that if you build it, they will come then, you are wrong. Field of Dreams was only a movie; it is not reality. You have to tell them that you built it and to buy it.

Imposter Syndrome –
Feel Like a Fraud? It Happens
by : Elyse Tager| Elyse Tager |https://www.elysetager.
Definition: Wikipedia: Impostor Syndrome (also known as impostor phenomenon, fraud syndrome or the impostor experience) is a psychosomatic pattern in which people doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent, often internalized fear of being exposed as a “fraud.”
W
hen I start working with clients, one of the first subjects we deal with is the mindset. One of the topics that always, always come up for the female entrepreneur is “Who am I to think I can do this?” or teach this or provide this service, or whatever. The fear is all the same. Moreover, if you let that fear run your show, it will keep you from reaching for your dreams. The truth is, the further you go in your business or career, the more risks you may have to take and the more likely it is that “imposter syndrome” will show up. If you have experienced feeling like a fraud at any point in your life or career, chances are you have chalked up your accomplishments to luck, charm, connections, or some other external factor.
Psychologists tell us that the personality types most likely to have “imposter syndrome” are perfectionists and overachievers. That’s right: The superwomen. That sounds like most entrepreneurs to me! So let’s talk about how to break through it. Identify what is shaking your confidence. The more you can pinpoint and define the issue, the more you can confront it head-on with some actionable solutions.

1. Remember your real life value and all that you have achieved.
I’ve started a “Look back 2018” document where I record everything that I have accomplished, big or little, business or personal. I add to it on an ongoing basis. It builds confidence!
2. Stop comparing yourself to others. I know, easier said than done.
There will always be someone else that is farther along than you are, so what’s the point? Stay focused on your path and capacities. You may need to opt out of newsletters and curtail your social media habit to keep your eyes on the prize.
3. Look at your language, both internal and external.
“I think, I feel, it may just be me, but...” Stop right there. Consciously upgrade your language with more confident, assertive phrases, and you will reframe your self-image. “In my opinion,” “I have a question, and I’m sure I’m not the only one,” are examples that communicate much more strength. Be on the lookout for words and phrases you can eliminate or tweak.
6. Everyone starts somewhere.
Your perspective and point of view will be unique and will resonate with just the right people. If it doesn’t, then they are not the right client or customer for you.
7. Think you are the only one?
Famous actors, artists, CEO’s and the most successful people are the most likely to experience “imposter syndrome.” Consider it a symptom of success. You are in good company! However, manage it, so it is only a tiny voice that does not cripple your progress. Assume the power pose! You got this!

lanning events is my passion. It’s like breathing. It comes naturally, and it is simply a part of who I am. I don’t know where it came from, but it is something I’ve been doing since I was a young child. I can remember my father once telling me “Life isn’t always going to be a party,” and I remember thinking “maybe not every day, but the days that are, they are going to be spectacular”! Every event requires hours of planning, coordinating and execution to produce an exceptional event. When you stop and think about it, SMERF (Social, Military, Educational, Religious and Fraternal) events all have the same underlying theme – LOVE. Each of these categories has a love of: •
An individual, couple or group
•
Our Country
•
Learning
•
Spirituality
•
Brothers and Sisters
But when it’s all said and done, what was the message you wanted to convey? Whatever the final goal is, what I can assure you is, the process stays the same. 1. Determine the Budget This is one of the most important aspects of event planning. Knowing in advance what financial

resources are available, allows you to make informed decisions on every aspect of your event. 2. Identify a Date and Time Selecting the best day and time of your event in advance, allows you more options and betternegotiating possibilities. 3. Select a Venue This sets the tone for the event, and should be decided upon wisely. If you are having an intimate affair for 50 guests, selecting a 15,000 square foot venue is not going to lend itself to the vision of your event. 4. Be Thoughtful of Your Attendees Menu options, temperature, ease of access to the event, cost of parking, etc. As the host, you have put in a lot of time and energy that’s true. But your guests are sacrificing their time and money to celebrate with you. 5. Always Leave Them Wanting More When guests can’t wait until your next event, you can pat yourself on the back and say to yourself, “well done”! The Voice of San Jose, Jr. By: Margaret Jackson |AM 1220 KDOW & BOTE | www.kdow.biz Radio Show She is known as the “Voice of San Jose, Jr.,” for singing the United States, Vietnamese, and African American National Anthems at San Jose City Hall and multiple local community events. McDowell has recorded two Vietnamese CD’s. In 2015, she won best emotional vocals on VSTAR Kids and in 2016 she traveled to Naples, Italy to perform in the Piazza del Plebiscito plaza for a PBS special airing across the country. In 2017, McDowell won the Gold Star for the Northern California NAACP ACT-SO competition or Contemporary and Classical Voice, and in 2018 she won first place in the South Bay Teen Idol competition. Victoria Thuy Vi McDowell is a 15-year-old accomplished vocalist who sings in five different languages. She is equally a proficient honor roll student, a musician playing the piano and violin in her high school’s Orchestra, and a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. McDowell’s passion for singing, music, and academics is a small glimpse of the young girl living much of her life in the spotlight. The Small Business Concierge Magazine had the opportunity to learn more about the ambitions of Victoria Thuy Vi McDowell in a phone interview. Victoria McDowell based on our conversation she is just getting started.
Margaret Jackson: How was school today? Victoria McDowell: School was fun. I had fun classes today. Margaret Jackson: Victoria you seem to be a local star. How old were you when you started singing? Victoria McDowell: I always had a passion for singing even when I was very young. My parents discovered that when I was about three or four years old. I wrote a song while in the bathtub they recorded me and saw some potential. When I was six years old, I was placed in a Vietnamese school, because my mom is Vietnamese and at the school, the teachers encouraged me to sing at their events. It got me singing on stage and in front of people. I have always felt very comfortable on stage and performing. I started singing more in different places and learning new languages with English, Vietnamese, Italian, Latin, and Spanish. I started singing when I was four and a lot more in the community when I was about eight years old. Margaret Jackson: What do you want to be when you grow up? Victoria McDowell: I want to be an ER doctor. Margaret Jackson: (Long Pause) You want to be an emergency room doctor? Victoria McDowell: Yes. I always have had a passion for being a doctor. I changed a lot about what kind of doctor, but I settled on an ER doctor a few years ago.
42
| Fall/Winter 2019
Margaret Jackson: You have interesting goals. You are pretty accomplished at a young age with many recognitions where is that leading and you want to become an ER doctor? Why are you developing your vocals for singing? Is that to help get a college scholarship? Victoria McDowell: I always liked and had a passion for singing and being a doctor. I love to help others make them happy and put a smile on their face; those two things go handin-hand for me. I want to keep sharing my voice with others, and that is why I sing at charity events to raise money to help non-profits that are helping other people, the elderly, orphans, and those with disabilities. It is a passion of mine to use my singing to help others as well. Margaret Jackson: Are you familiar with the term “Music Therapy? Victoria McDowell: Yes, I have. Margaret Jackson: Would you consider yourself as a Music Therapist? Victoria McDowell: I could say so. I want to start a non-profit or doing something that I can go to hospitals to sing for the children or the elderly in convalescent homes. (Giggles) I would love to be a Music Therapist. Margaret Jackson: How do you feel when you are singing to children with cancer or the elderly? What do you think they feel about your singing? Victoria McDowell: I have been told, that they feel grateful. I hope that my voice helps them feel better.

The Voice of San Jose, Jr. (cont.) Margaret Jackson: Have you sung to terminally ill children? Victoria McDowell: That is something that I have been trying to do for a long time, and I something that I really, really, hope to do soon. Margaret Jackson: Do you like school? Victoria McDowell: I like school, it is fun for me. My favorite subject is math. I always keep my grades up only As and Bs an honor student and having high grades is important to me. My dad always says if you don’t keep your grades up you cannot go out and sing (she giggles). Margaret Jackson: What grade are you in? Victoria McDowell: I am in 10th grade. Margaret Jackson: Do you have a college picked out? Victoria McDowell: I have always loved Stanford going there is my top goal. Margaret Jackson: What would be your best advice to students around the world?
Margaret Jackson: Do you want a boyfriend? Victoria McDowell: I don’t want to go for one, but I will let them happen, but grades are more important than a boyfriend. Margaret Jackson: What singing language is your favorite? Victoria McDowell: I would say Vietnamese. It’s a difficult question because all the languages are beautiful in their “own” way. I hope to learn a lot more languages in the future. Margaret Jackson: What is your favorite song? Victoria McDowell: I would say “Listen” by Beyonce it has a place in my heart. It makes me free and happy. I can tap into it. Margaret Jackson: Have you met Beyonce? Victoria McDowell: No. I went to her concert in 2015. She is someone I really, want to meet. I admire her so much, and she inspires me every single day. Margaret Jackson: How was her concert?
Victoria McDowell: I would say follow your passion, go for it, and always be yourself.
Victoria McDowell: It was spectacular! It was amazing!
Margaret Jackson: What would be your answer to stop school shootings?
Margaret Jackson: What would you say to Beyonce if you met her?
Victoria McDowell: I would say if everyone was kind to everyone and accepted them for who they are and make sure that no one feels alone.
Victoria McDowell: I would say that she is one of my biggest inspirations and she inspires me to sing every single day.
Margaret Jackson: What would you say to bullies?
Margaret Jackson: What do you do in your spare time?
Victoria McDowell: Imagine if you were in their place and putting other people down is not the way to go for sure. You should never put other people down. Margaret Jackson: If you could do something for your parents what would it be? Victoria McDowell: To make them proud, go to school and get a degree. I would want to make them proud. Margaret Jackson: Do you have a boyfriend? Victoria McDowell: No, I don’t.
Victoria McDowell: I love spending time with my family and friends. I like to go shopping, bowling, and miniature golfing. McDowell has accomplished more than most adults in a short amount of time. Encouraging the next generation to live their passion is a responsibility that is shared by the global community. It is important to get behind the Victoria McDowells and inspire the next generation to dare to dream big. Empower them to run after their goals and that it is okay to make mistakes. It happens, but gets back up and go for it until it looks like the dream that is in their heart.

hen we receive a kind word or a thoughtful gesture, enjoy it and then consider how you might respond thoughtfully. When dealing with your spouse, it’s important to embrace the law of reciprocity. Ideally, all marriages would express agape love; a selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional love that gives without expecting anything back. Unfortunately, we live in an age where people are literally married to inanimate objects like cell phones. CBS News reported, “Wedding bells ring: LA man marries cellphone at Vegas chapel” spending hours a day focused on their own personal cares instead of the needs of their loved ones. What would the quality of our relationships be if we challenged ourselves to love our spouse even more than we did yesterday? Can you imagine how much fun it would be to creatively strive toward that goal using the same drive and sense of urgency that we apply to obtain money or a promotion?
We must keep our ma through daily exchan acts, words of kindne hand is reaching out many words of encou gratitude all foster’s lo
Many times we assume our spouses know that we love them because after all, “I put a ring on it didn’t I?” Thinking like this is the first step toward taking our spouse for granted, and before long we find that days, months, and even years go by without acknowledging the efforts of the one who means the most. And when that happens, “It won’t be long before the thrill is gone!” as BB King says. To prevent this, we must resist this temptation for complacency using the following strategy:
46
•
Pray together even if it’s briefly, silently, or remotely.
•
Prioritize your spouse’s needs above the needs of others including your children.
•
Touch each other. Give your spouse a kiss and hug before you depart and when you reunite.
•
Laugh together, be spontaneous, and find ways to be silly
•
Express your gratitude and be specific.
•
Think of unique ways you express love to your spouse draw a picture, sing your favorite song, make a favorite meal, or serve the community.
•
Acknowledge what your spouse does well. Simply say, “I admire the way you...”
•
Acknowledge mistakes promptly. A gentle and sincere word can turn away anger.

Do You Believe that God has a Purpose for Your Life? By: Pastor Susan Chigwada | Sister2Sister International | (530) 340-6213
D
o you believe that God has a purpose assigned to your life? Do you want to impact the world? Do you need a platform to help you achieve your goals? Do you need a sister to go there with you? Sister2Sister is a faith-based women’s organization that believes in supporting, developing, and encouraging the purpose God placed in a woman’s life. Religious debate aside, are you able to answer the above questions as it pertains to your life? Addressing these questions and more is a quest to empower women. Women are working together to advance personal assignments to have a strong effect and impact on the world. God created all people with a purpose inside of them. Your mission goes beyond yourself, family, region, and the nations. Women are to take part in positively influencing what is known as “the seven mountains of society” sometimes referred to as pillars or spheres or shapers namely: 1. Education 2. Religion 3. Family 4. Business 5. Government 6. Arts/Entertainment 7. Media We believe that every woman can achieve a measure of their life’s purpose on their own. Women because of various reasons which include but not limited to upbringing, level of education, religious beliefs, geographic location, do not believe in themselves or their life’s purpose. Sister2Sister affirms women; thereby giving each other the confidence needed to impact their sphere effectively or to

| Fall/Winter 2019
“occupy their mountain or sphere.” In addition to affirmation, there is a need for a positive impact on each other. It provides women with the necessary strength that is needed to do business in their spheres of influence effectively and with added confidence. Women are taking their rightful positions in the world. In ancient Jewish history, Deborah was a Judge; she owned her own “Palm Tree of Deborah” where she used to sit under and hear community cases brought by the Children of Israel andpassed her judgments. The ancient proverbs speak of a businesswoman who bought and sold in the marketplace. She would go out and survey land and purchased real estate. Multiply your impact as sisters through coming together and connecting using the “the multiplier effect” it ranges from sharing of information to forming partnerships or being each other’s customers. Sister2Sister’s goal is to impact and change the world. You do not have to be a conglomerate to impact the world; you need to know sister influencers in a different part of the world. To achieve this Sister2Sister has chapters in different parts of the world. Connections are vital. The world is a “global village” operations in one’s sphere should be able to influence another part of the world. In Sister2Sister we open doors for each other by having sister connections in different parts of the world. With a local contact, you will know the requirements of that country. We encourage identifying and having a desire to provide needs no matter how small your business. Learn more about your life’s purpose at www.Sis2Sis.org

The Importance of Music Technology for 21st Century Music Programs By: Dr. Jon Fielder | Instructor of Audio, SAE Expression College | https://usa.sae.edu
T
he musical landscape in America saw numerous changes throughout the 20th century, and continued developments in the 21st century, specifically in the fields of recording, and electronic music composition and performance. Advancements in recording technology have led to higher quality recordings as well as the ability for independent musicians to create and produce their music. The creation of new digital technologies for creating music portable synthesizers, audio editing and sequencing software, MIDI controllers, and availability of thousands of plugins for signal processing - have opened artists to new methods of expression and sound design. Online companies like Bandcamp, Tunecore, and CD Baby provide independent artists the means to share, distribute and sell their music without the need for record labels and contractual obligations. The myriad of technological developments has unquestionably changed the paradigm of the art and business of music. Now, more than ever, an understanding of music technology - even at a basic level is essential for any professional and formal education in music.
“
The American university system was home to some of the earliest experiments in electronic music, notably the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center and the electronic music studios at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. John Chowning, a professor who taught at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford University (CCRMA), developed the technique of FM synthesis in 1973. This method of synthesis became a staple of pop music with the creation of the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer in 1983, a leading form of synthesis for music in the mid80s and later in video games of the 90s. Many of the approaches to modern electronic music have their roots in the experimental music that existed primarily in academia, and for decades was even on the fringes of contemporary concert music. In the midst of the rapidly changing music industry, many academic institutions across the country - public and private - have expanded their music departments to include electronic music studios, as well as programs dedicated to music recording and engineering. However, numerous academic institutions have not added electronic music and engineering programs to their curricula, or continue to keep it a fringe field that is not necessarily part of the required course sequence for all undergraduate music majors. The lack of these programs in any institution is of concern and in need of attention. Of greater importance is the need for placing the appropriate weight into these disciplines, because of the incredible service they offer students - a skill set necessary for being a 21st century musician.
My coursework in music technology was unequivocally a key aspect of my music education...

Current practices of electronic music and the field of audio engineering require a vast array of knowledge beyond an understanding of music theory, history, composition, and performance technique. Being an engineer, electronic composer, and/or sound artist necessitates a comprehension of signal processing, hardware (cables, interfaces, speakers, microphones, consoles, etc.), software, audio editing, and the fundamentals and physics of sound. Competency of audio technology can be applied to nearly any and all practices of music beyond the aforementioned fields. It is becoming increasingly common to amplify instrumentalists of all kinds in live performances; acoustic players are utilizing technology for performing concerts and recording full albums of electro-acoustic compositions (Pamela Z, Lindsey Goodman, Keith Kirchoff), and some are blending genres of pop and classical with implementation of various types of live effects processing and multimedia productions (Jacob TV, Holly Herndon, Tyondai Braxton). In 2017, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble began utilizing binaural recording and headphones during live performances to create a fully immersive listening experience. Organizations like the Society of ElectroAcoustic Music of the United States (SEAMUS), and International Computer Music Association (ICMA) create numerous opportunities for the performance and research of experimental and avant-garde electronic music practices. Classical musicians, like independent songwriters, artists and producers, must also record and distribute their artistic endeavors, thus reinforcing the importance of possessing, at minimum, a functional understanding of the music industry, recording processes, and methods for distribution.
My academic coursework was filled with a wide range of courses in music and audio technology at all institutions I attended from Bachelors through Doctorate. That particular path is not common for many music students, however, these courses helped shape every facet of my career for the last decade. I’ve worked as a composer, live sound engineer, recording engineer, mixing and mastering engineer, as a music and sound editor for TV and film, as a freelance sound designer, and currently as an instructor of music and audio at SAE Expression College in Emeryville, CA. My coursework in music technology was unequivocally a key aspect of my music education, and in some ways prepared me for my music career just as much as my extensive training in music theory, history and aural skills. Any and all situations in which I’ve worked as a live sound technician or recording engineer were undeniably smoother and more productive when working with musicians who possessed knowledge of amplification, microphone placement, and the process of recording in a studio or concert hall. As our lives become increasingly linked to advances in technology, so must our models for education. I maintain that academia is first and foremost a place for people to expand their horizons, to gain exposure to knowledge and cultivate an understanding of the world around us. Nevertheless, one cannot understate the inherent function of academia as, to some degree, job training. If the goal of music programs in higher education is to cultivate artistry while preparing creative minds to thrive in the everchanging world of technological innovation, then we must accept the necessity of, at least, a basic understanding of electronic music, signal processing, and principles of acoustics for all music students. Expanding the core music curriculum to fill these gaps provides young artists with so little to lose, yet much to gain.

Selling Real Estate, a Business Can You Shrink the Tax Hit to Zero? by : Bruce Jones | Tax Wealth | www.taxwealth.com
T
he U.S. tax code is complicated and now stands at a daunting 70,000 pages, giving some taxpayers pause, as they assume every section contains a landmine that is going to trigger audits, payments, and penalties. Not true. A more accurate perspective to take is to instead view the laws as the bridge to a significant amount of tax relief. Congress through the years has created laws specifically to do just that. Caution, of course, is always appropriate, but the code is packed with benefits to capture. Thinking creatively about how you apply all the different pieces of the law allows a taxpayer to seize significant amounts is tax savings while remaining completely within legal bounds.

So, here’s a question to ponder: “When was the last time your tax guy called you up with ideas to save you taxes?” Perhaps, never? If so, isn’t worth getting a second opinion by a qualified proactive tax professional? Here are the results for two clients who decided to take that step.
“
Until this year, we haven’t had this much change in the tax code since 1986. Some things will happen automatically to help you save taxes, like lower tax brackets. However, if you own your own business, for example, there are several significant choices you have to make to capture most of this huge opportunity that is available to you. Moreover, if you don’t do your planning now, you’ll forever lose those opportunities. Each law that is created by
Congress is designed to apply to a particular situation or group of people. The real estate industry, for instance, has a number of laws and regulations that encourage home ownership and even enhance taxfree cash flow for rental property by tapping into specific types of tax benefits that are available only to owners of investment property. However, these laws cannot limit benefits to a particular person or entity. They are open to anyone who qualifies.
There are some things that will happen automatically to help you save taxes, like lower tax brackets.
or Other Capital Asset Capital Gains Taxes Forestalled
A 78-year old apartment owner was selling her property for $3,650,000, triggering a taxable capital gain of about $2,700,000 and $1,664,448 in combined federal and state taxes. By taking advantage of tax law, together with her CPA, we guided her in structuring the sale so that all the taxes were eliminated and gained for her $3,165,208 in total tax-free benefit. Taxpayers with more substantial tax challenges can also benefit significantly from thoughtful tax planning. One recent case dealt with the sale of multiple numbers of businesses by the same seller for a combined selling price of nearly $60 million. Capital gains taxes totaled more than $23 million, and an additional $25 million was due for taxes on depreciation recapture of capital equipment sold. The planning results were dramatic: Without proper planning the seller would have ended up with less than $10 million after costs of sale, debt, and taxes being paid. Instead, by coupling just two tax planning strategies together, our client receives at the close of escrow more than $30 million cash tax-free, with more than one-half the taxes being eliminated entirely and the rest deferred for decades.
Our tax system is brutally complex and has many working parts. However, if approached properly, our tax laws can work for the benefit of us taxpayers—but only if we choose to plan ahead. Proceed carefully and cross-check each step as you go through the process to ensure that you comply with the law and, in fact, reduce your risk. Saving $100,000 on the sale of an asset can be just as significant for one seller with fewer assets as compared for another with more to sell. The key to gaining tax planning success is having a working knowledge of the tax codes, diligence in being sure what your proposing is a right fit for the client’s situation and proper execution when that is confirmed. All we need to do is to follow what the law says can be done. Innovation and creativity in applying available tax benefits can unlock considerable value to people and businesses who own appreciated assets. Don’t miss your own opportunity to follow this proven path to save on taxes and use those tax savings to help achieve your dreams. PROCUREMENT CONTRACTING
PROCUREMENT Contracting
Some small businesses grow by successfully competing to get and implement procurement contracts with government agencies and large corporations. When organizations need the goods and services of others in order to produce their own goods and services, it is said they procure what they need. Procurement contracting is a huge market. The federal government, for example, typically spends approximately $500 billion in contracts every year and the law requires that 23% percent of these dollars be awarded to small businesses.
Has a luncheon every third Wednesday of each month featuring guest spekers who highlight procurement opportunities. Luncheon are often procedes by workshops from the Norcal PTAC and the City of San Jose.
There are also many significant procurement market opportunities locally. Collectively, The County of Santa Clara, the City of San Jose, VTA, Santa Clara Valley Water District, San Jose Water Company, other local cities and agencies last year spent over three billion dollars on goods and services. Those organizations plus local school districts, have hundreds of millions of dollars of proposed construction and maintenance projects to be completed over the next few years.

One of the states goals of SBA District Director Julie Clowes is to work with her “sister agencies to encourage them to create more contracting opportunities for local small businesses while at the same time working with the small business community to make sure they are ready and have the capacity to fulfill those contracts.”

Get Out of Your “Own” Way – 8 Obstacles to Business Growth by : Elyse Tager | Elyse Tager | https://www.elysetager.com/
E
very business goes through stages, from the seed of an idea to startup to increasing levels of maturity and growth. Each step has its challenges, and none are easier than the last. In those transition periods, things can feel out of control. Many of your carefully crafted processes are no longer working, and you and your business feel like you are bursting at the seams. These are growing pains, as my mom used to call it. Businesses, at all stages, have them. After working with hundreds of small business owners in the past seven years, here are the most common obstacles I’ve heard about time and time again, and what you can do about them. Do you hear yourself in any or all of these complaints?
1.“Everyone is starting a podcast (or virtual summit, or YouTube channel). I should too!” Bright shiny object syndrome can strike at any stage of your business. When you look around you at your competitors or others that you feel are in your league, they seem to be doing more, accomplishing more, are more famous, earning more, doing more than you are. Just stop. If you are still in business after a year or two, you are doing just fine. Moreover, you are enough! Create a thoughtful, just-right-for-you strategic plan for your business and stick to it. Earmark new projects, platforms or courses for the next time you are in planning mode; this is your business. Design it for yourself, not everyone else.
2. “The only one who can do it is ME ME ME!” You built this business by yourself and know every inch of it. You know what you need to do and can do it faster and more accurately than anyone else. However, if most of the tactical work is done, or closely supervised by you, you are severely hampering your “own” growth. At some point, you will need to let go and train others to fill in for the majority of your functions, so that you can act as a real CEO.
62
| Fall/Winter 2019
What does a real or true CEO do? It means building CEO time into your schedule. Block off a half-day each week, a full day each month, and perhaps a weekend each quarter for planning your future next steps. These are strategic planning blocks, not doing blocks. A CEO doesn’t do much dayto-day doing. The CEO is creating content, finding and nurturing high-level partnerships, planning and strategizing the future.
3. “I am EXHAUSTED” Owning and running a business is not easy. We all know that. Especially in times of transition, it’s easy to run on all cylinders, work more than a typical work week, and not pay attention to anything but your rapidly growing business. You will burn out, and your family and your business will suffer. Before you get to that stage, build self-care into your schedule. Decide what replenishes you. Is it time with your family, incorporating exercise into your life, a walk, reading a book, going to a movie? Schedule repeating blocks of time on your calendar and make this non-negotiable.
4. “My to-do list just grows and grows.” The common thread I see with female entrepreneurs at all levels of business is that they have forgotten the KISS principle (Keep it Simple, Sweetie). In a rush to find new revenue streams, build new packages and courses, new formats for their content, streamlining what’s already in place goes right out the window. Have a strategic plan and stick with it. You will have built your next six months or year during your CEO time. Once that is in place, don’t deviate. Find the top 3 tasks (or one task!) that you, as the true CEO need to accomplish each day. Don’t build out another activity until the ones already in place are smooth as silk, with processes in place and the correct team members making it happen. If you find your to-dos are getting out of hand, stop and re-evaluate. Are you doing more than you initially planned for in your strategy? Do you have the right or enough support staff underneath you?
Are they getting the job done? Do they know what they should be doing and what your expectations are? Consider outsourcing some of the tasks if you are not ready to expand your team.
5. “I have a good sense of where I want my business to go, but can’t figure out how to get there.” At this stage, is when growth and transition are the hardest. The processes, procedures, and structures you carefully put in place for the first stage of your business may not be right for your next stage of growth. It is the time to look outside of yourself for support, direction and new ideas. You can’t possibly know everything! Join a Mastermind or Group Coaching program. Seek one that is a paid program (skin in the game creates a more focused result). If you can, find one that has several members that are more advanced in their business than you are. Be sure you are a bit outside your comfort zone so that you have to stretch to participate. You will grow, and your business will thrive as a result. Find a Business Coach, even for a short period (3-6 months is the shortest I would recommend) to help you see beyond your “own” walls. Others have been where you are.
6 Whom am I to…? Imposter Syndrome rears its ugly head at every stage of business, no matter how successful you are. If you feel you need more courses, training, certifications, or degrees to establish your credibility, spend some time documenting the experience you DO have that create your expertise. What jobs, clients, life experiences have you had that add up to your expertise? You are valued by the results you produce, not for the certifications and degrees that you have.
7. I don’t have any MONEY! It takes some money to start a business. Start with what you can afford, and grow from there. Seek out free resources first. There are hundreds of podcasts, blogs, free courses, and apps and tools available online. There are groups like the SBDC, and SCORE who offer free counseling. Take advantage of those! Source for money. There are ways to get money when you need it. The SBA offers loans at a very reasonable rate. Some banks are more small business friendly than others. Friends and family (although those choices can be fraught with issues), or your credit cards are potential sources for start-up costs. You can always find a part-time job or start contracting with your area of expertise until your cash flow crunch is behind you. I’ve done it - It’s not the end of the world. It’s a transitional solution to a short-term problem.
8. I’m too late to the party. (It’s all been done before.) It has all been done before, but not by you. It’s VERY rare that a business concept will be a one and only. You will always have competition. However, you will have your “own” spin on your niche too. Let your personality shine, develop your “own” methodology and framework to the services that you provide, and stand out from the crowd. Each one of these obstacles you can overcome with mindset shifts, or changes in your approach to your business. Get the help that you need and figure out how to overcome your obstacles and create and grow a profitable business. Learn more about “Obstacles to Growth” at https://www.elysetager.com/
