Week 9 Journal Entry

ENVS10003

This week’s studio consisted of volumetric drawing practice. We were required to create volumetric drawings from our chosen Oval Pavilion sections. Figure 1 shows the original section from the plan and Figure 2 shows the volumetric section.

Figure 1

This detail shows a box gutter at the intersection of two roofs. To create the volumetric drawing, the original detail was traced and extended to create three dimensional volume. Staggering of components and layers enables their volumetric qualities to be better understood.

Main components (Ching, 2008) Aluminium flashing in wall is used to divert water to the outside of the building, preventing it from penetrating the wall. The use of interlocking seams and drips break the capillary action of the water. Waterproof sheeting surrounding insulation is used as a moisture vapour barrier, as condensation will lessen the effectiveness of insulation. Brickwork comprises structural envelope of building. Insulation controls the movement of heat into and out of the external components of a building. Batt insulation is used in the above detail. It is incombustible. Joint sealant is used as a seal against the passage of water and air into the building.
