Protect Yourself
What is online SHOPPING fraud? Today you can buy or sell almost anything over the internet…and criminals can use the anonymity of the internet to rip-off unsuspecting buyers and sellers. For example, scammers may sell a product – often at a very cheap price – just so they can steal your payment card or personal information. They may also take your money and send you a worthless item, or sometimes, nothing at all.
What is online AUCTION fraud? Frauds at online auctions include misrepresentation of an item, non-delivery of goods and services, as well as non-payment for goods delivered. The actual auctions can also be rigged. If you are selling a product, the scammer can enter a low bid followed by a very high bid under another name. Just before the auction closes, the scammer withdraws the high bid and the low bid wins. If you are buying a product, the scammer can boost the price using dummy bidders. You should also be aware of cheque overpayment scams. In this type of scam, you are sent a cheque for something you have sold, but the cheque is made out for more than the agreed amount. The scammer hopes you will refund the extra money before noticing that his cheque has bounced.
What to look for...
• Be cautious of items offered for extremely low prices.
• Limited or no feedback rating on sellers.
• Buyers and sellers from overseas.
• Requests to send funds to a third-party
company or money service.
6 I SMART MAGAZINE I
June 2013
• Deal with buyers or sellers you know by reputation or experience. If you are not familiar with them, do some research.
• Look for a privacy policy. Be sure you are comfortable with how the company collects, protects and uses your personal information before you submit any details. • Do not be lured into using payment methods other than the options recommended by the Internet auction site. Be wary of phishing emails that ask for personal or financial information. For more information on phishing, see that section in this booklet. • Shop only from your home computer. It’s much safer than shopping at a terminal in an internet café or library.
• If you plan to buy something, go directly to a store’s website by manually typing its address into your web browser. Don’t click on links in an email message even if you know who sent it. •
Verify secure connections. Do not enter any financial information on a site if you see a broken key or an open padlock symbol in your browser. This means the transaction is not secure and could be intercepted by a third party.
• Check your bank and credit card statements online, as this allows you to review your payments as they happen rather than waiting until the end of the month to review a paper statement. • Never give out your social insurance number, date of birth or driver’s license number to a seller. • Before you bid, learn as much as you can about how the online auction works, your obligations as a buyer, and the seller’s obligations. • Remember, if an offer sounds suspicious or too good to be true, it probably is.
What is Phishing? Phishing is typically an email scam which tries to deceive people into thinking a legitimate organization is requesting private information. Also called “brand spoofing,” phishing is the creation of email messages and web pages that are replicas of existing, legitimate sites and businesses. These websites and emails are used to trick users into submitting personal, financial, or password data.
Protect Yourself Online! • NEVER share your passwords and select a complex password of letters, numbers and symbols. • Beware of Internet promotions that ask for personal information. Identity thieves may use phoney offers to get you to give them your information. • After completing any sort of financial transaction online, make sure you sign out of the website and clear your Internet file/cache. • Before giving your credit card number or other financial information to a business, make sure that their website is protected and secured. Look for a lock symbol located somewhere on the browser or make sure the URL begins with “https://”. • Chain letters and phoney investment schemes try to win your confidence with false promises of incredible returns - they’re only after your personal and/or credit information. There are many types of investment frauds and scams. Many are convincing and look very real. To learn more about investing and making good investment decisions, visit www.GetSmarterAboutMoney.ca. • Teach children to keep their identities confidential in chat rooms, bulletin boards or newsgroups. • Today the vast majority of young people in Canada use social networking websites such as Facebook. Identity thieves can take simple information such as your birthday or your pet’s name, as clues to common passwords and steal your identity.
What to look for… • A phishing message is intended to get a quick reaction from you, using upsetting or exciting information demanding an urgent response, or employ a false pretense or statement. Phishing messages are normally not personalized. • Typically, phishing messages will ask you to update, validate, or confirm your account information, etc., to avoid negative consequences. They might even ask you to make a phone call. • The information being sought can include: Social Insurance Numbers, full name, date of birth, full address, mother’s maiden name, username and password of online services, driver’s license number, personal identification numbers (PIN), credit card information (numbers, expiry dates and the last three digits printed on the signature panel) and bank account numbers. • Often, the message or associated website includes officiallooking logos and other identifying information taken directly from legitimate websites. Government, financial institutions and online payment services are common targets of brand spoofing. In some cases, the offending site can modify your browser address bar to make it look legitimate, including the web address of the real site and a secure https:// prefix.
• Install fire-wall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, and security software and keep it up-to-date.

How to protect yourself… Lottery Emails
• Be suspicious of any e-mail or text message containing urgent requests for personal or financial information (financial institutions and credit card companies normally will not use email to confirm an existing client’s information).
• Contact the organization by using a telephone number from a credible source such as a phone book or a bill.
We ask that you consider the following when you receive a solicitation of this kind.
There has been an ever-growing number of scam lottery emails advising consumers they have hit the jackpot.
• Never email personal or financial information.
• They do not notify winners by email.
• Avoid embedded links in an e-mail claiming to bring you to a secure site.
• You cannot win without first buying a lottery ticket.
• Get in the habit of looking at a website’s address line and verify if it displays something different from the address mentioned in the email.
• They do not randomly select email addresses to award prizes to.
• Regularly update your computer protection with anti-virus software, spyware filters, email filters and firewall programs. •
A number of legitimate companies and financial institutions that have been targeted by phishing schemes have published contact information for reporting possible phishing emails as well as online notices about how their customers can recognize and protect themselves from phishing.
• Regularly check you bank, credit and debit card statements to ensure that all transactions are legitimate.

• They do not use free email accounts (Yahoo, Hotmail, etc) to communicate with you. • They do not tell you to call a mobile phone number. • They do not tell you to keep your winnings secret. • They will never ask a winner to pay any fees up front (like taxes or a security deposit) to receive a prize, lottery or sweepstake! • Remember, if you don’t recognize who sent you the email - delete it.
Good business plans have become roadmaps to companies’ success stories. Business plan is a beneficial tool for every business owner. Many businesses must write a new business plan when their company is not doing very well, when they are ready to grow, starting a new company or asking for financing from a bank. For example, Groupon’s the e-coupon-clipping public company next CEO might have to write a new business plan according to the April 2013 of Canadian Business magazine. If Groupon finds a need Good business plans issue to write a new business plan after its stock dropped, small and have become roadmaps medium size businesses must have a need to create or update to companies’ success their roadmaps to success.
stories.
Have the business operations of your company changed in the past few years? Do you have a different management team then you had few years ago? Do you have new competitors? Has the external environment changed since you started your company? Have the cash-flow statements, income statements, and other financial statements of your company changed drastically in the past 5 years? Do you find your marketing efforts unproductive? Are your products or services different now than in the past? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions then it is time for you to write a new business plan for your company. In order to innovate and change your business you will have to write a new business plan.
After all, this is your business and you can make all the important decisions.
My recommendation to the small and medium size businesses is for the owners of the company to type-up their business plans using standard business plan templates as a master outline. After all, this is your business

and you can make all the important decisions. Writing a new business plan will be less expensive for you than to hire a new employee or to double up your marketing spending. Many mature businesses have become more sophisticated with the owners wearing fewer hats now then at the start of their business. Thus, the owner might not have all the necessary knowledge to write a business plan by him or herself then, I recommend you ask the company experts to assist you with the write-up of you new business plan. Find that old business plan, dust it off and let’s create your new road map to success for your company. Where do you start? First, I recommend you break this large project into smaller, more manageable tasks by dividing the write up of the business plan into sections. The sheer volume of business plan headings, points and subpoints delayed me from writing a traditional business plan. In fact, when I saw the traditional business plan 30 pages of templates I said to my-self this is more

like writing a thesis paper for a university. However, having a business plan template to follow helped me out in writing up a business plan for my consulting business. Therefore, my second recommendation is to obtain a good business plan outlines, which will give you guidelines to follow.
Writing a new business plan will be less expensive for you than to hire a new employee or to double up your marketing spending.
I found one good free business plan outline content on Internet that you can follow. The Royal Bank of Canada on its Business Resources page lists 7 major sections of a typical plan; Introduction, Team, Business Environment, Marketing Plan, Operations, Finance, Risks and Conclusion. Each of those major sections has a list of numerous subsections, and questions to assist you with the write-up of your business plan. In addition, to listing key sections of the business plan, RBC also posted sample summaries of 3 different small businesses. Most likely no business owner will show you his or her business plan therefore I found the RBC’s sample business plans very good examples to use as a reference. For those of you who will not go online and follow the RBC business plan outline, I am providing you with a general business plan points from my consulting business. Please note there is no fixed content for a business plan. Companies are in different industries, have different structures, goals and available resources, which will affect both the content and the outline of a business plan. I would like to provide you with general business plan bullet points that are relevant to every company:
• • • • • • •
• Finances
Management Business Description Registrations and Regulations Products or Services Market Research Marketing and Sales Plan Business Operations
Asking relevant questions will assist you with producing a better quality business plan. I recommend asking probing type of questions. For example, you can create business goals and objectives by answering the following questions in your business plan:
• What are your plans for the future of the business?
• What are your ambitions for the company?
• Are you developing growth strategies? Is so, how fast do you think you will grow? • Do you plan to increase productivity, diversify, or eventually sell the business? • Explain your short and long term goals for the company. • What are your time frames for reaching different goals?
Asking probing questions and having a checklist will assist you in creating a more effective business plan. Giving your best effort makes in creating your business plan will make your roadmap to success much stronger. Identifying your direct competitors and their competitive advantages will make a huge difference in positioning your products or services in the market. Successful businesses differentiate themselves extremely will from their competitors to the point of almost creating a new market. This is a prime example of how your Market Research section of the business plan is relevant to your business success. If you relay only on Internet to do your Market Research you will have problems finding your direct competitors unless you’re an online business. Business plans are decision-making tools for your company. Thus, you got to create an excellent business plan to have an excellent roadmap to success for your business.
The main component for you in writing the business plan is to have a business plan checklist for all the above points. Each of those business plan bullet points consists of many sub-points. For example, under the Business Description it is recommended to check for Industry Overview, Company Description, History and Current Status, Goals and Objectives, Critical Success Factors, Company Ownership and Exit Strategy. One of the most common negligence by business owners is not having an Exit Strategy. In fact, I read an article that stated 70% of small and medium size business owners do not have a plan for their business after they can not work any longer. A business plan is an excellent motivator to include the Exit Strategy into our success roadmap.

Let me ask you a question which may seem odd to you at first. Are your customers (or customers that expressed an interest in your business in the past ) important to you? No doubt your customers are very important to your business. In fact, without customers it is impossible for any business to survive. They are literally the life blood of any organization or business. A typical pattern I see in many business owners is that they fail to realize that once they acquire a new customer, or someone has expressed an interest in their company, how important it is to strengthen that relationship. And the common way you can strengthenthisrelationshipisbysimplyfollowingupwiththem. Following-up is equally important to both new and existing customers (and doing it right) can help you boost your bottom line very quickly.
Follow Up With Prospective Customers Most of my clients find that it is not easy to close a sale on the very first attempt. In fact, even the statistics in direct mail marketing show that response rates increase dramatically the more direct mail pieces you send to them. Although your customer may not buy into your salesperson’s first attempt to close them, this does not mean that the prospective client is not interested in buying your product or service. Could it be that they just require more time in order to make the purchasing decision? Could it be that they just require moretimeand/orjusthavesomemorequestionsregardingyour product or service? In fact, I feel definitely recommend that you contact them after your initial meeting because it will show that you are genuinely interested in serving their interests and satisfying their needs (and not just wanting to gain access to their pocket book). During the follow-up process, you can take advantage of the opportunity and explain to your customers in depth how your productorservicecanprovetobebeneficialtothem.Aneffective follow-up strategy provides you with a second opportunity to make the sale.
95% Of Business Owners Make This Mistake! “Most business owners do not have a consistent follow-up plan with their past, current & potential customers 14 I SMART MAGAZINE I
June 2013
Follow Up With Existing Customers I remember one time I was talking to a business owner and I asked him this simple question: “what marketing are you doing to your past and loyal customers?” And I’ll never get the look he gave me. “What do you mean marketing to my existing customers”, he said. You see, most businesses do not have a system in place to market to their existing clientele. Acquiringanewcustomerisdefinitelymoredifficultthanretainingexistingones.Thinkaboutit…..anexisting customer has already said (by their actions) that they want and like your product. So when it comes to your current customers, you should definitely treat them as pure gold and put a strong emphasis on marketing to them. In fact, I would recommend you start a VIP Status to some of your long time customers. This will definitely show that you care and value their consistent business. The hard truth is that if you don’t value your existing customers and do what’s necessary to keep them, your competitors will be only too happy to relieve you of the responsibility. By following up with your past customers, it only proves to them that their business is important to you. Let me ask you another question: Do you like when people take the time out of their day to recognize and appreciate you for the things you have done for them? If you are like the average person….the answer to this is “of course you do”. When following up with your customers, make sure that they know that you want them to be satisfied with the service that they are receiving from your business. By doing this, you not only increase your chances of retaining them, but the probability that they will refer your business to others (in the future) also increases as well.
Reasons prospects or customers may not buy from you: 1) They may not be ready to make a decision. 2) They may have more pressing things on their minds. 3) They may have more questions about your product/service. 4) Two or three of your competitors are actively trying to sway your customer to purchase from them.
By following up repeatedly, you will have a “dramatic advantage” over your competitors, since few of them will follow up more than once. When your prospects are ready to buy, which could be one week from now, or nine months from now, you will have a better chance of getting the sale if you are uppermost in their minds. You can only do that by consistently following up.

In fact, for most people, purchasing a vehicle will represent their NEGOTIATION ROOM: largest personal spend, after their investment in a home. Since the majority of vehicles purchased in the country are ones that have been previously owned (approximately a 60-40 split used vs. new), it is well worth it to first look at buying used.
Used cars are purchased at various prices, so there is no set invoice price at which a dealer must begin negotiations, and there is more competition to choose from with models from several years available at a similar price range.
In large part, used car popularity is due to the sheer volume of LESS FEES PLEASE: Fees such as freight and PDI, which quality vehicles available to the public—many of which are near new and still offer the bells and whistles that come with brand new models.

Camino de Santiago place for adventure spiritual journey reflections new frends strength... www.santiago-compostela.net T
he need to go on pilgrimages has always been a human characteristic. People have long trodden paths to destinations that promised miracles or penance, or to atone for sins. And even in this rational age, people are drawn on spiritual quests to the sacred sites of the world. In the Christian world, few sacred sites are more famous that Santiago de Compostela in Galacia, northern Spain. Pilgrims have walked this route for more than 1000 years. And nowadays, over 100000 pilgrims annually make the journey that ends at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
What draws them there?
June 2013 I SMART MAGAZINE I

One of the oldest extant pilgrim routes is the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, or The Way of St James in English. This way is in fact made up of a collection of old pilgrimage routes which lead to Santiago de Compostela in Galacia in north west Spain. Here a cathedral has stood since the 9th century.
as refugios or albergues in Spain. These hostels dot the routes along the pilgrim’s ways and often cheap or even free accommodation. This usually takes the form of dormitory beds and accommodation is generally limited to one night.
The credencial is also necessary for getting your Compostela, the certificate awarded to pilgrims on completing the way. To earn this you need to walk a minimum of 100 kilometers or cycle least 200 kilometers on your pilgrimage. To get your compostela, you need to have you credencial stamped in the towns you pass though on your pilgrimage. This proves you’ve walked the route recognized by the Pilgrim Association of St James.
According
to legend, the appearance of the remains of the Apostle Saint James led to the construction of Santiago de Compostela in the ninth century. It soon became a pilgrimage destination on a par with Jerusalem and Rome.
Of all the many paths that lead to Santiago de Compostela, the most popular is known as the French Way. This is a 750 kilometer route that begins in France and crosses the Pyrenées at either Somport or Roncesvalles.
Many
take the pilgrimage for secular reasons. It’s a scenic route wending its way through vineyards, farms, orchards of apples and pears, herbs and vegetable gardens and a varying landscape marked with with villas and quaint villages set high in the mountains.
Modern pilgrims make this journey for a number of
reasons, only some of which are spiritual. In fact over 100,000 pilgrims from over a 100 countries make the journey each year on foot, bicycle, donkey, or horseback. And that’s just official pilgrims holding a pilgrim’s ‘passport’. Most conclude however that it is a moving experience and rewarding in ways they did not anticipate
So for whatever reason you may wish to travel this trail, you can do so on foot or bicycle. Here are some pointers for the journey. Firstly, you should get a Pilgrim’s “credencial” by registering in a town
such as Roncesvalles on the border with France. This document identifies you as a bona fide pilgrim and permits you to stay in the small inns known
Whatever the reason for the pilgrimage, finally arriving at the great Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is a moving experience. True pilgrims embrace the statue of the Saint James and often break down in tears of happiness. And even those who traveled for pleasure find themselves affected in ways they can’t explain. So if you’re considering a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostelo, don’t hesitate. Whatever your motives, you’ll have a wonderful experience and who knows, it could change your life. Learn how to learn Christopher Dzikowski
22 I SMART MAGAZINE I
June 2013
/dzikowskiconsulting.com/
Do you know that most people use about 30 to 60 % more time than really needed to learn new things? Are you one of them?
Ability to learn quickly is one of the 3 top skills that employers are looking for while hiring. This ability in many cases decides about our
successes or defeats in life. Why so many people have problems with quick and efficient learning? Why spending so much time in classrooms in order to receive a degree or certificate?
Two years ago I wrote an article analyzing the differences between an institutional learning and corporate training. My article was full of scientific expressions; therefore I am not going to recall it here. However the conclusion, based on my extensive experience was that institutional learning in XXI Century has to change. By institutional learning, I meant schools, colleges and universities. Scientific community has had mixed reaction to this article, because it directly contravened what teachers, professors and instructors are doing with their students. In conclusion I wrote: If the main goal of institutional learning is to educate students, immediate changes are not necessary. However, if the educational institution`s goal is to prepare
students for existing and future positions on the job market, changes are overdue and should be implemented as soon as possible.
It is the author`s opinion that institutional learning should adapt some training and development techniquesandmethodsinordertoprepareparticipants(notstudents).Programsshouldconsider adult`s learning principles and incorporate appropriate methodologies. It is imperative for learning specialist to recognize differences between training, development, education, andlearninginordertodesignanddeliverrelevantandefficientlearningprocess. These differencesandcorrespondingmethodsmaybethedifferencebetweenwell-preparedemployee and employee completely irrelevant to the organization. So, what is it about? Why teachers were frightened after reading my article?
Do you know that an average person can learn new language from zero to the university level in 1 to 2 years? Impossible? CIA operativeslearninthiswaynotonlylanguagestructureandgrammar, butalsoaccentand idioms. How many years we are learning a new language in training collegesandschools?
Do you know that a corporate director has virtually no time to learn new things? A person like that cannotspendcountlesshoursgoingthroughbooksandmemorizingnewparagraphs. Therefore, corporate trainers can teach corporate directors new skills and knowledge in two, three training days and the bosses will learn what they need. To acquire similar knowledge and skills at the university, it will take them probably the full semester. Do not get me wrong. I have no intention to criticize institutional learning here. My intention is to show you, the readers of “SMART” magazine how to learn quickly and efficiently and how to make this learning process as pleasant as possible. There was a man… There was a man called Malcolm Knowles and today we call him the father of adult`s learning theory. Malcolm wrote in his book “The Adult Lerner: A Neglected Species” that there are very important differences between how children and how adults learn. The problem is that we learn how to learn in schools from our teachers and fellow students. This is happening first in elementary school, after that in high school and finally during our post secondary education. When we mature, we apply these know-how-to-learn methods to our learning. So, if there is a difference between children and adults and we are trying to learn like children, we basically learn on reduced capacity. To be more precise, scientists use different terms for children`s learning and adults’ learning. They call children`s learning “pedagogy” and adult`s learning “andragogy”. Do you remember, when in school, you were subjected to different pedagogical treatments?First, you were called a student. There is nothing wrong with that, however, as an adult when you call yourselfastudent, youwillimmediatelytriggeralllearningbehaviorsandpatternsthatyouusedin school. Usually they are not very pleasant memories. June 2013 I SMART MAGAZINE I

Aftercompletionoftheuniversity, manypeoplewakeupduringthe nightsweatingandrecallinginbaddreamspreparationsforexams, presentations and tests. So, your first step as an adult learner is to break-up with these memories and learning patterns. Do not call yourself a student. Call yourself a learner, or participant. For example, you can say to yourself: I`m participating in the records management program leading to the certification of American Management Association. It sounds better and puts you in the adult`s position. Remember: never ever call yourself a student.
The second important difference between pedagogy and andragogy is the learning style. Why children (students) learn? They learn to pass the
test. They learn to pass the final exam. They learn to complete a course and to obtain credits in order to receive a degree, a diploma or a certificate. They learn from books that are mandatory. They learn from teachers, who sometimes are not familiar with the subjects they teach. The teacher would say: Read this chapter and memorize paragraphs 4, 6 and 10, because it is going to be on the test.So,youwouldbereadingandmemorizingtheseparagraphs. As an adult you should ask why do I need to memorize these paragraphs from this particular book, if in our library there is a video tape that practically explains these issues. Do I have to read this book, or maybe there is a similar audio book and it is much faster for me to learn while sitting in my car going to work? Why should I learn in a quiet class while I am learning much faster while listening to the laud music? Remember, you are not a child anymore.
You are an adult, and it is you who decides what is best for you. If you have a different learning style, do not be afraid to apply this style. Remember also, that learning objectives are flexible. It means that you should decide what you need to learn. Pedagogy assumes that children depend on their teachers, becausechildrenareinexperiencedanduninformed. However,as an adult you already have an experience and information. Do not be afraid to use it in your learning process. Later on I will show you how to do it practically. I will show you how to recall your experienceinordertospeed-upyourlearning,evenifyouthinkthat it has nothing to do with it.
The third important difference between pedagogy and andragogy, that works for your advantage is passive and active learning. Doyourememberwhenyouwereinschool(university)andduring a boring lecture you killed the time passing notes to an attractive neighbour?Andyoureallydidnotcarewhatthatteacher(professor) was talking about. Did you learn anything that day except on how toletyourmindwanderthroughtheromanticrelationship?Didyou hate to read books and articles written in a language that looked a lot like Sanskrit?
24 I SMART MAGAZINE I
June 2013
If you did, you would be interested in knowing that there are different methods of learning. We call them active methods. And, later on I will show you in this article a few of them. Believe me; they are much more effective than boring lectures and books. Not long ago, I participated as a learner in an accounting program at one of the most prestigious colleges in Ontario. The instructor was completely out of touch. She was treating adult learners like children. Participants were enduring this type of teacher`s behaviour, because they were aiming to obtain a professional certificate in order to get a better job. The course broke up during sixth class. For participants, the last straw was the instructor`s complete disregard for class timing, and how fast people can learn. She did not know that, when children learn, the teacher completely controls the time and pace. However, when adults learn, they control time and pace.
What we learn and why? What we can learn? We can learn mainly three things: knowledge, skills and attitudes. We learn each of them in different way. If we attempt to learn attitude (behaviour) in the same way as knowledge we are weakening our learning speed in about 60%. Not long ago, I decided to obtain a restricted firearms license. Usually a restricted weapons course in Ontario lasts two days. I was very surprised to learn, that at the end there was going to be a theoretical and practical exam from the material contained in two 60-pages books. How is it possible to memorize in one day two sixty page books and in addition learn how to practically use about 7 types of weapons and countless types of ammunition? Even as a former army officer, I could not imagine that this would be possible. Can you imagine? If you could memorize two books a day while you were a college student, you would probably be the best in class and still have time to party. It turned out it was not only possible, but also doable. Skin care is not a topic of recent times; it has been in practice since ancient times, when herbal skin care was probably the only way to take care of skin. However, skin care has transformed in a big way. Herbal skin care routines have been replaced by synthetic/chemical-based skin care routines. The herbal skin care recipes which once used to be common place are not so popular today (and even unknown to a large population). This transformation from herbal skin care to synthetic, can probably be attributed to two things - our laziness (or just the fast pace of lives) and the commercialisation of skin care. Even herbal skin care products have been commercialised. These commercial herbal skin care products have to be mixed with preservatives in order to increase their shelf-life, hence making them less effective than the fresh ones made at home. However, it seems that things are changing fast and more people are now opting for natural and herbal skin care routines. But still, none want to make them at home and hence the commercial market of herbal skin care products is on the rise.
Herbal Skin Care By: Ellen Biddle

So what are these herbs or herbal skin care mechanisms? Aloe vera, which is an extract from Aloe plant, is one of the best examples of herbal skin care product. Freshly extracted aloe vera is a natural hydrant that helps in soothing skin. It also helps in healing cuts and treating sun burns. A number of herbs are known to possess cleansing properties. Dandelion, chamomile, lime flowers and rosemary herbs, are a few examples of such cleansers. Their herbal skin care properties get invoked when they are combined with other herbs like tea. Antiseptics are another important part of Herbal skin care. Lavender, marigold, thyme and fennel are good examples of herbs that are known to possess antiseptic properties. Lavender water and rose water also form good toners.
Herbal skin care is good not only for the routine nourishing of skin but also for treatment of skin disorders like eczema and psorasis. Most herbal skin care products don’t have any side effects (the most important reason for preferring them over synthetic products) Moreover, herbal skin care products can be easily made at home, hence making them even more attractive. So, herbal skin care is the way to go. However, this does not mean that you totally discard the synthetic products. Some people go to the extent of debating with their dermatologist, if he/she suggests a synthetic product. You should accept the fact that some skin orders might need usage of clinically proven non-herbal skin care products.
Tea plays an important part in herbal skin care. Tea extracts are used for treatment of skin that has been damaged by UV radiation. Oils prepared from herbal extracts present another means of herbal skin care. Tea tree oil, Lavender oil, borage oil and primrose oil are some popular oils used in herbal skin care. Some fruit oils (e.g. extracts from fruits like banana, apple and melon) find use in shower gels (as a hydrating mix) Homeopathic treatments and aromatherapies also come under the umbrella of herbal skin care remedies.

What foods
boost the immune system?
T
here is an ongoing debate about what is the best diet style for good health, longevity, and strong immune system. Would it be a vegetarian diet that is so highly prised for its health benefits, or we should rather include animal-based foods due to their immune supporting amino acid content? Would honey with lemon fight flu by itself, or maybe oregano or cinnamon be better? Do Brazil nuts support immunity, due to their high selenium content, or maybe we should eat egg yolks instead because they are rich in cancer-fighting vitamin D? Chia seeds or flax seeds, beef or chicken, full-fat or low-fat, ancient grain, granola or quick oats? Don't even bother!
32 I SMART MAGAZINE I
June 2013
Nutrition DOES matter for your immune system, but do not bother with any of the above details! Our bodies run on nutrients and to build strong immune system you should be on the hunt for the highest nutrient dense foods. So what would that be: carrots or steak? Take a deep breath again and relax! You are still missing the point. Unless your food comes from high quality soil, is subject to minimal nutrient-removing processing and is free of man-made toxic additives, it does not matter whether you are eating bananas or eggs, because you are not getting nutrient dense-quality food, but only a poor lookalike imitation. An orange is not equal to an orange. Unless you understand the difference between organically-grown quality fruit and GMO ìFrankenfoodî you will never get any nutritional advice straight. You may think you are eating an immune boosting high fruit and vegetable diet, but in fact you may be getting closer to an immune disaster with every bite. Unless you can understand the difference between pesticide-free grown lettuce and toxic pesticide residue on spinach leaves you will never be free of immune system deficits. Whether you are fighting flu, cancer, arthritis or just want to have a strong immune system, there are simple steps that you need to follow. Do not worry about whether kale or beef, but rather consider the following: a)
Is it a nutrient-dense food or a nutrient-poor food?
b)
Is it processed food or unprocessed food?
c)
Is it sprayed with herbicides/pesticide or not?
Get real! If you spend your dollars on supposedly ìgood-for-youî high-fibre nutritional bars without paying attention to how grains are grown and processed, you are just subsidising world-wide chemicalization, GMOzation, wild-life decimation, and deforestation. Your dollars are your vote. So whatís important to you: emotionally charged front label claims or the real background information and a healthy planet?
Unless you can answer these questions with confidence you may as well abandon any further expert dietary changes. You may juice your green vegetables all day long, but if your lettuce, spinach, and kale are grown in a nutrient-poor soil, are sprayed with growth-promoting chemicals, contain insect DNA do you really think you are detoxifying, strengthening your immune system and defying degenerative diseases?

3 Health Hazards at Home!
What G
enetics, toxins, infections, stress, food sensitivities and allergies all contribute to ill health. There are many, often complex, reasons behind ill health requiring care by an informed health professional – but is there anything you can do for yourself and your family to get on the path to better health? We all know to eat a diet free of artificial colours, preservatives and processed food and drink plenty of filtered water – but could there be another important key?
Yes! Toxins and chemicals in air, water, food, building materials, household products all contribute to poor health. They are bad for us, not only for planet Earth. In fact, exposure to these things can cause flu-like symptoms, fatigue and headaches among other disorders.

makes us feel sick and tired? What helps us feel better?
WATCH OUT FOR THESE 3 HAZARDS! Hazard 3: Mold Mold growth in musty, damp basements, behind wallpaper, under carpets or in the bathroom needs to be removed from the home. Mold can impact the respiratory and nervous system and can even affect brain function that controls mood. Always wear a mask when cleaning surface mold; for bigger damage call in professionals.
Hazard 2: Newly purchased furniture, bedding, carpets, clothing & toys The “new” smell from these items is full of toxins and chemicals. Always wash and air-out new items. These chemicals can cause flulike symptoms. Even if after a few days you get used to the smell, the chemicals still affect you. Clean before use!
Hazard 1: Scented household, laundry, airfreshening and body-care products If you knew that something can cause seizures, headaches, flu-like symptoms, brain fog, breathing issues, sinus pain, tiredness, skin eruptions, pain, mental irritability, would you want to use it in your daily life? Probably not. Chemical such as benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, acetone, ethyl acetate, a-terpinene, methelyne chloride can cause those very symptoms. When you use any scented product you are spreading these chemicals into your skin (your largest absorbing organ) and breathing it directly into your lungs. These then pass through nerve pathways to the brain. The solution is simple – opt for scent-free products! Home is where you relax and restore your wellbeing. The first remedy for ill health is to remedy your living space. By avoiding these home health hazards you lay a foundation for good health for you and your family. © 2013 EcoHealth and Wellness Inc. www.ecohealthcentre.ca

In addition to using bioresonance/biofeedback screening, we also provide “MORA Therapy” and “BRT therapy”. This screening technology and therapy shows changes that occur in the organs at the cellular level that indicate various stages of cell health, ranging from cells that function normally to cells with reduced function and finally to cells that are not functioning. The goal of BRT therapy is to restore the health of the most damaged organs and tissues by focusing treatment on those cells that have sustained the most damage. The goal is to help damaged cells return to a state of healthy functioning. MORA Therapy is used more as a general type of bioresonance therapy to improve the cell health of all organs within the body. ENERGETIC PREPARATIONS referred to as "spectronosodes" are made by the device specifically for the needs of the client and are taken orally to rebalance poorly functioning organs and to re-establish balance and health. 10% DISCOUNT until the end of July - If you are interested in improving your health with this new and advanced technology, we offer you a discount on a full body scan.

Is our tap There is an assault on bottled
water sales and a strong push towards using
tap water instead. Apparently bottled water is not good for us. Plastic is polluting the environment and causing cancer in humans, and tap water has
no bacteria, which makes it safe to drink. That’s the reasoning of the media that eagerly spreads the message of wisdom coming from our health authorities. This logic sounds very reasonable and appeals to many people. After all we should trust authorities, because the health authorities should know what’s best for us, right? It just so happens that I had my own experience, which shattered my idea that tap water is safe and authorities are on our side. For a long time I have known that tap water was “dead” water, electromagnetically “dead” that is. In other words it does not promote health, but I have never otherwise questioned the safety of consuming tap water before. It actually happened unexpectedly.
About a year ago I had a need to test well water. Being a smart consumer I looked for the most comprehensive water testing kits available. I was interested whether the water was acid or alkaline, what minerals it had, if there was bacteria, and anything else that may affect my health. I found a reliable and actually rather inexpensive test kit and followed the instructions. The water was not bad except for one shocking discovery: the water showed high levels of pesticides, in fact higher then deemed safe by the authorities. That was initially surprising, but not unreasonable, because the well was surrounded by large masses of agricultural land. I would expect that the pesticides are coming from the farms. I was alarmed, not because I was personally affected. I wasn’t, but the chemicals had damaging effects on the large conservation land attached to the well. Imagine how these pesticides and herbicides affect trees, plants, and wildlife of the area. Pesticides are design to kill. Wildlife such as deer, foxes, and fish do not have a choice, but to drink pesticide water. Here is a thought: if you are concerned about the wellbeing of our environment and wildlife, the first thing you need to do is to petition for non-toxic and sustainable agricultural practices (such as organic) rather than thoughtlessly purchase the cheapest lettuce and believe you are saving the animals. The best way to petition is by supporting natural and/ or organic food suppliers. The more sustainable and organic foods you buy the less you support wide-
spread use of toxic chemicals. You have the power to affect the supply and demand and thus turn bad into good. Every time you are at a grocery store you have the opportunity to “donate” towards preserving wildlife by spending your dollars on food that come from non-toxic farms. Make a mental note of that and let’s go back to our well story.
You think our well water test result is bad?
Yet the real story starts now. I purchased another test kit just to make sure that I did not make any mistake and I was able to replicate the results. Unfortunately, the test results were the same. Now curious, I proceeded with testing the tap water. Guess what? The pesticides were there, too. So I retested the water again because I could not believe my findings. Yet the results kept on coming up positive for chemical contamination. I asked the neighbours if they ever tested their tap water for pesticides. They personally have not. They though the municipality has done all the testing and the water
has been considered safe.

water safe? They have never thought that this “safe” tap water may have contributed to their poor health. I visited the municipality with my finding. I thought that this was just a fluke and a temporary state of things. Wasn’t I in for a surprise! I found that the municipality does not test for pesticides and herbicides. Neither do they care to consider testing for them despite my findings. “We do not do it, it is not part of our policy”. Wow, people! Don’t you live here too? Doesn’t your wife, daughter and son drink this poison? Where are your heads? Have you never heard of pesticides and herbicides as killing agents? Are you wondering why we have cancerepidemics? The knowledge and indifference of local authorities regarding this topic was eye opening and truly shocking. Nobody cared to check my findings. I started conversing with multiple labs that have the capability to test chemical levels in water. Of course, independent non-government approved labs, were not to be taken seriously by the government officials, so I “should not bother with them”. The only option for me, if I wanted to be taken seriously, was to check the “government authorized labs”, so I did. Although there were few of those available, even fewer tested for pesticides. I had back and forth conversations with the lab representatives, only to get reluctant and partial answers. One of the available tests was over $350 and tested only two pesticide parameters. The lab did not test for other pesticides and when I pressed for reference ranges and specifics of the pesticides, as well as a history of tests, the conversations ended. I guess, I asked too many inconvenient questions. Our water is safe, because it has no bugs, yay!! I got smarter over time. I no longer look at things that are pointed out for me. There is always a reason why this and not anything else is highlighted. Diversion of attention is a great way to keep public unaware of other likely more important issues.
Ask questions, it’s time. Start with something simple: do you know what’s in your water? PS. I keep on drinking bottled water. I figured it actually may be safer.
