About The Collegiate Trust

The Collegiate Trust works in the boroughs of Croydon and Crawley, educating children and young people from 3-19 years of age with a clear vision to deliver exceptional education for all. Such an education achieves excellent outcomes in pupil progress and attainment, a rich creative, cultural and physical learning experience, and great personal and social development for all pupils. This is achieved by working with and developing strong teams of staff in each school, under the direction of the Principal of the school and the Local Governing Body (LGB).

AMBITION for every one of our learners and each of our staff to be the best they can be

The Trust grew out of Riddlesdown Collegiate, an outstanding (OFSTED, May 2016) secondary school in Croydon with over 2,000 students and 200 staff. Gossops Green (p6), in Crawley, was the next school (and the first primary) to join the Trust, followed by Waterfield Primary (p12) (also in Crawley). The Quest Academy, Courtwood Primary (p5) and Gilbert Scott Primary were the next cohort of schools to join the Trust, followed by Kenley Primary School (p9) most recently in September 2021. In 2022, Gilbert Scott Primary became Quest Primary (p11).

Outdoor Learning

At Courtwood Primary, we are fortunate to have extensive outdoor space with our own Forest School, pond and Edible Playground which we use to promote outdoor education for our children across the mainstream and ELP. Our own woodland has been specifically developed to deliver Forest School sessions, where children learn skills such as den building, bushcraft and cooking on an open fire. Learning outside the classroom provides children with the opportunity to achieve and develop confidence through hands-on learning, supporting the development of healthy and active lifestyles by offering children opportunities for physical activity, freedom and movement, and promoting a sense of well-

Developing the whole child Gossops Green children are taught to be considerate and care for their school, their community, and for one another. They learn that they have the power to make the world a fairer, kinder place and they are nurtured to develop confidence, to articulate their ideas and to be proud of who they are. Our children take on leadership roles from an early age and develop essential life skills such as working in a team, leading projects and taking responsibility.

A happy child will go on to thrive in their education. Ofsted commented that Gossops Green ‘has a family atmosphere…and staff know their pupils well and look after them carefully.’ It is true that above all else, this is a happy school where children feel valued, listened to and safe. At Gossops Green, we value the whole child and develop their emotional, physical and mental wellbeing, alongside their academic learning. We put a great emphasis on nurture and wellbeing with a dedicated Nurture team working full-time in school to support children and families.

Effective communication supports our children to hear and see that they are valued and important. Our children are enabled to express their feelings, beliefs, show empathy and be aware of their own physical and emotional well-being.

Belonging – local and global

Communication is the gateway to learning, academic achievement and success beyond school and into adulthood. Our children learn to be critical thinkers and develop a life-long love of learning.

Our curriculum

Our creative and challenging curriculum is planned around topics which spark children’s interest and make them excited to learn new skills and knowledge. We build in many memorable experiences to bring learning alive and meaningful for our children. We believe our children should experience the best and we are one of only two schools in all West Sussex to be recognised with the prestigious Music Mark Award due to our exciting and inclusive approach to this wonderful subject. We are also proud to have been awarded the national Gold Mark for our exemplary School Games provision. Whilst we offer an exceptional wider curriculum, we match this with our excellent teaching of the core subjects. Year 6 pupils left Gossops Green this year (2022), exceeding national results in each of the statutory assessments (SATs) in maths, reading and GPS (grammar, punctuation and spelling).

Knowledge, skills and understanding

Our children learn that good communicators develop an appreciation of others; their needs, beliefs, values and cultures. This empowers them to challenge stereotypes, bias and discrimination. Our children learn to understand the ways in which communication can be used to contribute positively to the local and wider community.

Our children will become confident communicators who aspire to read widely, develop maths fluency and are able to articulate their knowledge across a wide range of subjects. In an ever-changing world our children will understand and use digital platforms with sensitivity, intelligence and full awareness of technology’s power to enhance communication.

The Collegiate Trust Prospectus Page 07

At the heart of all we do is our belief in excellent communication. The Gossops Green curriculum is driven by four key themes which we believe are the KEY to unlocking the potential that all children at our wonderful school possess:
