“The most obvious way to save energy is to cut down on wastage. IOT based Smart lighting, learning thermostats and sensorbased HVAC systems of the new generation are designed to automatically maintain the perfect conditions in spaces and keep energy use at the optimum level” - by Sameer Saxena, Member of Board of Director, Strategy Marketing, Legrand(India).
IoT and AI working handin-hand to build connected homes Artificial Intelligence(AI) is a far-reaching branch of computer science that is used in designing smart devices. With the help of AI, smart devices can learn from the observation of regular human behaviours and requirements, take new inputs and perform tasks to reduce human labour. IoT is used to collect and handle a plethora of data that is needed by Artificial Intelligence algorithms. Then the data collected by IoT gets converted into useful prosecutable data that can be executed by IoT devices. “The core of the Internet of Things is collecting data and tapping and analyzing that data to enable connected devices or people to make smart decisions. making sense of data and leveraging it to get a smart decision, getting such a large amount of data from associated entities does not make any sense. But how can IoT systems make intelligent choices? That’s where AI and machine learning come to the rescue of the Internet of Things. Machine learning is a branch of computer science that detects and infers patterns from past data to make valuable predictions. AI is the sub-branch of machine learning which equips a machine to mimic a human brain and can make decisions based on its past experiences as well as respond to the action in real-time. Moreover, AI trains a machine to understand and adapt itself according to the environment that it is surrounded by so that it can make sound choices in real-time scenarios”, says Sameer Saxena, Member of Board of Director, Strategy Marketing, Legrand(India).

“Reports say, lighting consumes up to 18% of India’s overall electricity consumption. To meet the needs of a growing population, we need to consume resources more efficiently. By replacing conventional lighting with LEDs energy consumption can be reduced by a remarkable 53%. Whereas, IoT enabled smart lighting technologies can further improve savings up to 80%” - by Sumit Padmakar Joshi, CEO & MD, Signify(formerly known as Philips Lighting), South Asia.
A truly intelligent smart home is a system that hardly needs any management on the user’s part and can make decisions based on observations or real-time data. Smart home security systems can now embody face recognition technology into video cameras. The network identifies facial landmarks like eyes, nose, chin and cheekbones in a person’s photo and matches the data with the imagery captured by cameras. Therefore, an AI-based security system can correctly identify the faces of a home’s residents and send notifications to their smartphones if it observes any suspicious activities on the premises. Natural language processing is another feature offered by AI-enabled devices like voice recognition technology and NLP tools comprising Amazon Transcribe and Azure Custom Speech Service or Siri,

Alexa and other voice assistants. Hence, IoT is often considered as the body and AI as the brain of a device.
Benefits of IoT devices “IoT is a technology that has the ability to transform life as we know it, but AI is the real driving force behind the IoT’s full potential. The core of IoT depends on how the data managed by AI is being processed to make intelligent decisions and aiding the convenience of users. In the smart home hemisphere, the pattern of usage of home appliances, spaces and power is mapped by AI through connected devices which is then shared with the IoT system to automate the functioning of the house. For users, this

IoT enables users to efficiently control and monitor all the devices and their performances. Smart refrigerators notify the user about when the yoghurt will expire or when eggs are about to finish. By shutting down when not in use, smart devices contribute to energy saving eventually cutting down the electricity bill. Also, IoT drives sustainability in numerous sectors reducing energy waste, improving connectivity and collecting energy data that can be analyzed to enhance efficiency. Supporting that, Arpit says, “It has helped energy companies broaden their services by linking up with numerous decentralized devices and/or energy sources like solar panels and microgrids to reduce strain on conventional power sources. Talking about the Smart Home industry, IoT has been equipping consumers with greater control of home energy use via smartphones or voice assistants. It has helped consumers make their homes more energy-efficient and affordable through circuit-level electricity monitoring, real-time reporting, smart alerts and remote energy controls. When plugged directly into breaker panels, we can provide real-time data about energy usage and production”. Smart home security systems are extremely helpful as they offer complete control of
everything inside as well as outside the property with the help of cameras, motion and smoke detectors that notifies if they sense something unusual happening in and around the premises. “Among smart home technology, IoT-based locks were one of the first connected devices adopted at a wide scale. These locks put great attention to its products’ compatibility and user experience. These smart locks have everything— outstanding security features, a sleek app for users, plenty of features, easy access (remote via Wi-Fi and local via Bluetooth) and integration with the most popular virtual assistants like Alexa, Siri and Google Home”, adds Sameer.
Major Drawbacks “The IoT phenomenon is getting bigger and better each year, but the lack of crossindustry standards is a hindrance. Unless IoT evolves to become a unified ecosystem, it will be tough for it to attain its peak potential. Industry leaders who have recognized this fact are stepping up to establish the required standards. Security is another challenge for the IoT. Every new hardware node or software module added to the system can offer a target for bad actors. Industry-wide standards can promise to play an important role in ensuring security across the ecosystem”, states Sumit. IoT is undoubtedly creating huge opportunities for numerous industries, but there are quite a few drawbacks as

well. One of the major concerns is cyber security. Others comprise the risk of overdependence on technology, data breach and malware attacks. “Today, organizations are taking security measures to protect information, however, this needs additional security and compliance to safeguard systems from attacks. With the number of connected devices increasing, addressing the security and safety of the data and the devices is going to be important and it is advisable to check all terms and conditions before giving the consent”, says Srinivas. “One of the nastiest malware types ever exists is Ransomware. This malware not only pulverizes your sensitive documents and data but also blocks admittance to them via encryption. At that time, the hackers easily hijack your IoT device and will request a payment expense for unscrambling the key opening the records. This is another biggest security challenge of IoT devices”, adds Sameer.
commissioning billions of connected devices but in utilizing the massive silos of data generated that will automate diverse functions. With consumer IoT, we should expect the inflexion point in the next 2-3 years. Post that, IoT will be a natural part of the consumer’s lifestyle very similar to how SmartPhones became a norm in the last decade”, concludes Arpit.
The way forward Smart home systems have globally witnessed a considerably steep growth graph in the last couple of years. Today, many households and commercial spaces are adopting IoT and AI-enabled smart systems to save money, enhance comfort and go green. Further development of IoT and integration of AI technologies into the connected systems are expected to create an intelligent habitat that can predict the user’s needs and offer them a seamless experience.

“With the advent of 5G and IOT, the smart home industry is expected to witness a massive growth in the coming years. As we make further strides in technology, a large plethora of options in terms of applications, appliances, devices and controllers will be made available to consumers to help design the smart home of the future. People will prefer to move to new homes and buildings fitted with connected lighting and integrated gadgets”, says Sumit. “5-8 years down the line, we can foresee advancement in internet technologies through improved network agility, unified artificial intelligence and the capability to deploy, enable, automate, and ensure security to multifaceted use cases. The possibility is not just in simultaneously

In Conversation with Joe Roberts, CEO, RTI Control
On making smart home integration seamless
Today, everything is “smart” and the smart things talking to other smart things are an important part of home automation. “Most components of the home media room are smart and most are DIY-friendly. However, connecting them into a seamless system is often DIY-unfriendly. So, for RTI , we’ve created the APEX Studio software wizard. With this, any integrator with a couple hours of training can set-up an exceptional media room experience for their client with a single touch-screen remote to control it all”, says Joe Roberts, CEO, RTI Control.

How do you scrutinize the constantly evolving control market? What according to you, are the most beneficial consumer-centric innovations that took place in the last couple of years? As a control company, RTI is not looking for that one most beneficial innovation. Control is, by its nature, the sum of a wide variety of related parts. The innovations we are working on are making a more cohesive, connected and intuitive experience for the home or business owner—and of course a programming and customization platform that makes it easier for the integrator to meet and exceed client expectations. Which sector (residential, commercial, hospitality) do you think is adopting smart control technology at a higher speed? What do you think is the driving factor?
contest—sometimes the innovations are on the consumer side, sometimes they come from commercials. And often an innovation in one market filters to the other as creative applications of the technology are developed. What makes RTI stand out among the other control systems in the industry? What are the most crucial points that RTI keeps in mind to deliver a contemporary, affordable, reliable and scalable control system to a client? RTI focuses on the experience, whether it’s the through RTI flagship line or a single room solution with our Pro Control line like we mentioned before. One thing we do exceptionally well—which helps our integrators differentiate their offerings—is delivering an advanced level of customization. Besides, it’s not just the interface, but also the programming and automation behind it.
What are the company’s latest innovations/launches for the residential sector? Our recent U3 Remote Control is a great example. This water-resistant remote with an IP-66 rating is ideal for wet and harsh environments that would be risky for a standard remote. Drop it in the pool? Relax. The U3 floats and is ready for action. What plans does the company have for the India (Asia) market? India is an important market for us and currently No.1 in Asia. From our experience of 8 years in India , we believe that India is a price competitive market and consumer demand value for money products. Recent introduction of Pro Control at a very aggressive price will be a game changer in the Indian market. We have a host of new innovative product and software features in development which will help our integrator to generate more business from home/commercial.

How would you describe the symbiotic relationship between a control system manufacturer and the distributor? How has the company’s journey been, till now, with Miantic, India’s specialist distributor of market-leading technologies for smart homes?
Each type of interface has its place as there is no single best interface. Where voice or a touch screen on the wall might be ideal for lighting, climate or security, many customers want that uninterruptible hardbutton control for the media room.
Distributors play a very important role for us to ensure timely support and timely delivery for goods to system integrators. The local market exposure of distributors brings us a lot of knowledge regarding how the market works differently from country to country.
What, according to you, are the major contributions of Smart Control Technologies to the global ecosystem?
Being an engineering driven company we rely on our distributors for all the requirements and inputs from the market along with forums which we use from time to time to get feedback from system integrators. Unique thing about Miantic is they are more a solution driven rather than box moving unlike distributors general role. Also, because of our experience with them, we clearly know that they have a clear idea on how to take a particular brand into the market based on requirements and knowledge.
Control lets us do more with less repetitive action. Whether it’s a simple “good morning” scene for the home that sets climate, lighting, shade, and audio while we’re getting the kids ready for school,
or a conference room designed for easy BYOD (bring your own device) engagement, the control system makes it happen in an integrated way that standalone smart device cannot.
How would you describe the practicability and versatility of different interfaces like remote controls, touch screen and voice?
20
I SMARTHOME WORLD I JUNE 2021
What future innovations do you envisage, that you think, will boost the automation industry threefold? How do you foresee the home/building automation industry 5 years down the line? As standards evolve, more devices will be able to communicate with more devices in more different ways. But the customer wants an experience focused on them, not on devices talking to devices. That’s where the control platform comes in and that’s what we’re focused on— creating exceptional experiences that feel personalized and intuitive.

I SMARTHOME WORLD I JUNE 2021
Spread across 1100 yards area, “Singhal’s Outhouse” was basically an addition to their existing property, which was adjacent to this property. It was built exclusively for their son, Shrey Singhal, one of the youngest singer/ composers in India.
CASE STUDY
Client’s Vision The idea was to not follow the concept of a conventional house but to design a space that would allow Mr Singhal to focus on his music. Scope of work This has allowed the reins of design to loosen and gave us the freedom to design something exclusive and
different in terms of a residential project. Additionally, it was supported by the clients as they were on a similar tangent of thought. Their requirements were fairly simple. This project was to accommodate their sons’ needs of a living area, a social space and a music and recording studio. It needed to be designed on a grander scale and had to have a luxurious feel to it. It has a spiralling sculptural form emerging from a
single articulated plane that warps to produce 3 separate roofed volumes. This design was done in such a way that the whole structure was divided into various cuboids of volume which catered to their functions. The ground floor was the place where the guests were invited over to, and the first floor was the private space with their living quarters. The second floor gave space to a private Home Theatre and a recording studio. And

all these spaces were put together in a way that allowed space for a large garden in the front and a swimming pool at the back of the house. Automations integrated Some home automation technologies aided in the design, allowing for simpler and easier living conditions. One of the main initiatives was into the field of home theatre, which would be completely controlled via an app on their mobile phone or through a control touch panel on the wall on the theatre. Fitted with a 7.1
24
channel audio system, 3 speakers (Artcoustic- SL Spitfire) are fitted behind the 160” wide acoustically transparent screen. Four more speakers (Tru Audio) are distributed on the rear side of the theatre for a surround audio system. There are a few scenes created and set in the systems to choose from for different usage purposes. For example, in the movie mode the motorized lift projector descends, the mood lights are adjusted accordingly, and the curtains are pulled close. An access control door system is also added to its features. Other than this area, the electrical systems in the house were divided into manual
I SMARTHOME WORLD I JUNE 2021
and automated systems. Most of the rooms are working on manual switches for the light requirements, but the hallways and connected spaces have automatic lighting systems that use motion sensors to trigger the lights in these sections. To improve the ease of lighting in vast areas and spaces, scheduled lighting systems have been installed in open areas such as the gardens and semiopen spaces such as the porch and terrace. These lights turn on according to a preset schedule, allowing for flexibility and security with just one click. These solutions aid in improving the efficiency of the system and managing the amount of electricity consumed. The automated scheduling system is not just restricted to lighting fixtures but also mechanisms like water geysers. This allows the user to programme the geyser’s timings ahead of time to prevent having to wait for warm water when it is needed. Other home systems in place are that of their home automation speakers. There is a connected system of speakers throughout the house that can be operated from any room using wallmounted equipment or the provided app for their mobile phones. This allows for a background sound or music to continue throughout the space uniformly and without any

breaks. This has allowed our clients to have a larger space for social gatherings with a constant sound as the bounds in this space. The HVAC systems in the house are also connected to their mobile phones, allowing them to control the air conditioners in their homes from afar to cool down their spaces ahead of time. Aside from these systems, we have security measures in place, including multiple CCTV cameras
and access control door systems. The eventual outcomes These technologies will improve the efficiency of the property’s security control and allow for easy surveillance from their remote devices. These technologies have provided them with the convenience and flexibility of managing several devices right at their fingertips. It also improved the functionality of
Ar. Amit Murao, Partner, Aashray Design Consultants Pvt Ltd their spaces without involving a lot of footwork. Along with these benefits, it enables them to use energy more efficiently in their home. This project was beautifully planned to meet all of the client’s requirements, and it was pushed to the next level with the inclusion of numerous home automation devices. The clients’ satisfaction said it all. JUNE 2021

“The Centaurus”- Luxurious Automated Residence Designed by: Ar. Sumit Dhawan, Cityspace’ 82 Architects, Gurugram Ar. Sumit Dhawan creates an extraordinary coalescence of luxury and minimalism called “The Centaurus”. Spanning across a 520 sq. yds footprint, the residence has been intelligently arranged in the blocked territory of New Delhi. This home manifests a rich contemporary theme, exhilarating surprise elements. The exterior facet was defined to be intricate with an international regal charm, exhibiting an intriguing vibe. The house narrates a flux where the overall interior grammar resonates a true harmonious balance. 28

The Vision: As briefed by the client, the interior grammar required the project to be judiciously designed, having low maintenance with a moderate yet calming spirit. Complete privacy was a major requirement of the client as the houses in the vicinity were planned without setbacks. With a three-side development
around the property, it was crucial to amalgamate exclusivity in the façade. Incorporating international standards, the project had to be done diligently as most of the houses across the area had an indigenous look and feel. Therefore, a bold façade was outlined galvanizing a material palette including wood, stone and perforated aluminium screen.
Our Analysis “We advised the client to opt for an out-to-out smart home automation system and other security devices that were up-tothe-minute according to the latest trends. Initially, the client was hesitant thinking that automation may complicate their lifestyle but we convinced him by educating

him on the fact that if automation is used wisely, these facilities can provide the client’s family comfort and ease in the long run”, says Ar. Sumit Dhawan, Principal Architect & Founder, Cityspace’ 82 Architects. Project initiation “We, at Cityspace’ 82 Architects, start every project with a comprehensive understanding of the client’s requirements, kinaesthetic, and research. My idea as the principal architect is to subsume the lifestyle

and necessities of a client, getting into his shoes and designing the space like it’s my own, invoking the client’s identity through the space”, says Sumit. “Anything and everything incorporated in the project is automated, from motorised gates to automated curtains, lights, and air conditioning system. We had also incorporated cameras and VTPS in the house. We were assisted in our endeavour by two Smart Homes Integrators, Shiv Prakash from Easy Homes and Jatin from Lumenatix. Both played significant roles in this project” he adds.

Convincing the client about the benefits of digital homes was a major challenge. Challenges were also involved on multiple levels in terms of technology where the architect had a plethora of options including Dali, 0-10V, and phase-cut. “We eventually decided to integrate all three options in different areas depending on the suitability and the functional regime. In terms of keypads, we weren’t satisfied with Lutron which was being used as the

back-end brand”, says Sumit. To resolve the issue, he chose to involve Jung instead of Lutron as it provides integrated keypad solutions where keypads, sockets, and thermostat can be integrated within a single module. “Therefore, we had to put in place an interface that could interact with the Lutron backend. All these challenges were resolved with the assistance of the automation consultants” he explains.
a status symbol. However, I believe that if incorporated appropriately, it only makes one’s life easier and comfortable. Automation aids one to use gadgets and appliances efficiently, ultimately increasing longevity. This house has been built as a benchmark conducive to the experience and aesthetics of luxury residences. The biggest learning experience for both the firm and the client was the acceptance of automation and the execution in daily life”, concludes Sumit.
Final Takeaway “The assumed opinion of the mass about automation is that it is used as

The vision: The client had a very simple idea. He wanted that whatever is implemented should be easy to control, upgrade & maintain. Most importantly, the entire control system should be designed in a way that even the not-so-technical elderly people could easily use it. Therefore, the user interfaces had to be implemented considering all members of the family. Client’s requirements offerings:

A hybrid system was designed to switch on/off or just dim the architectural as well as decorative lights throughout the house. Wall-
mounted keypads, C4 touch screens along with occupancy-based sensors were integrated. Twentytwo independent audio zones were installed. “The client wanted to have music distributed throughout the house with independent control. Therefore, we set up a Sonos speaker system, managed by Control4, to create a flawless music experience. The DTI team made sure that the entire video solution is managed centrally with 10 video zones including a home theatre. For the climate control of the entire house, a complete HVAC control system was designed to operate and manage each zone separately. Energy-saving was efficiently done by Occupancy sensors and timebased scheduling. A system with
multiple access points was designed to manage the networking of the entire house. We also installed home security systems, blinds & shades control”, says Prakash Rola & Jaymin Patel, Directors, DTI Automation Pvt Ltd. “The client was inclined towards the Control4 system and requested us to stick to the same. We had to design a flexible system which would consider the basics like lighting control, HVAC, security, audio and video distribution along with a sophisticated home networking”, they add. The architect’s conception: The conceptualization of the project “Madhav” was completely based on the thought of creating

an amalgamation of nature and technology. The land was blessed with 20 full-grown trees and the idea was to preserve each one of them. Architect Dipen Gada & Associates planned the house in such a way that they managed to preserve 18 Trees and they are now a part of the Home.
The roadmap followed: The project was initiated with a planning stage that comprised providing drawings and instruction to electrification work, followed by pre-installation of cables and necessary wires. Post that, installation of light distribution unit and wire termination were done.
Networking rack and equipment were also installed. Finally, media device installation and configuration were completed and then the system was programmed as per the client’s requirement. Cutting through the stumbling blocks: The house was constructed with thick RCC walls, so planning for a wireless communication system and Wi-Fi was a bit challenging for us. Also, the challenge was to design a system that the client’s mother, who is unable to freely move around the house, can also easily understand and control. “We planned a system in a way with enough access points for Wi-Fi. We planned a wired keypad from Control4 for the whole house. But to maintain Zigbee strength we added some wireless Zigbee keypads in each room. Keeping in mind the client’s mother, the DTI team designed a simple 4 button control system for her room using a card access remote. Each button would execute her required commands without even moving out of her bed including lighting, HVAC, TV, Devotional Music as well as panic

button whenever she wanted. The speakers fitted behind the bathroom ceilings and walls imparted a clutterfree appearance while offering crystal clear music” stated Prakash & Jaymin. Another challenge was to create a multipurpose room, that can be used as a home theatre, media room as well as a meditation room. That particular room had a window, overlooking a garden, through which sunlight flooded the room every morning. The screen of the home theatre system was set to drop down while the window went behind, transforming the complete look and feel of the room. Also, the ceiling was covered with fabric, behind which, speakers were fitted to create a clean look. The feedback: After the completion of the project, everything in the house was synced with the client’s routine and the regular change of programming made the system more comfortable. “We noted micro-details from the client’s lifestyle and programmed the system to fit perfectly into it. He was simply amazed at everything, ranging from engraved buttons to scheduled music”, said Prakash & Jaymin. Final takeaway: “When you plan a project by keeping every small detail in mind, no matter what scale your project is, you can do it easily”, concludes Prakash & Jaymin.

A world-class luxury Home Theatre setup By: Mehernosh K Pervez, Sound Decisions The client’s vision: Well-travelled and exposed to the top-notch private home theatre rooms all over the world, the client was looking for an Indian company that could create a world-class home theatre experience in his private space. His brief was clear, he wanted a minimum of 15-to-17-seater luxury theatre amidst his double-height living room, yet unobtrusive. Also, he didn’t want the projector and the screen to be visible when not in use. Primarily, the client’s father enjoys watching movies and hence his
son wanted to create a world-class experience solely for him. The basic idea was, why go to a commercial theatre when you can make it happen in the comfort of your own home and with much better video and audio experience than you could ever get from a commercial cinema set-up. Our analysis: The room was quite challenging with 23 ft high ceilings. The screen
was approximately 44 ft from the seating, so not many speaker brands can achieve great quality sound from such a distance. Therefore we used “Legacy Audio” custom-designed speakers for this, along with the Barco LOKI 4K high brightness laser projector, one of the best in the world. This was driven by a “Storm audio” processor and Parasound power amplifiers. Since the client wanted nothing but the best, we aimed to achieve it by integrating these brands. And it stood true to its performance!!

Scope of work: Since the main home theatre room was a part of the double-height living area with a “dress circle” type seating, it was important that the LOS (Line of Sight) of the seating was perfect and that all the seats had a clear view of the screen. So, we had to make sure that the seating steppers were properly calculated and designed well. Apart from the same, because of the double-height ceiling, the acoustics were a huge challenge and had to be well taken care of in advance. Proper acoustical isolation had to be achieved and planned before the outer aesthetic finish would come up.
beams so the LF (Low Frequency) traps have been incorporated in the ceiling treatment scheme below the isolation ceiling. The challenge was to bring in a system that has a full range with maximum directivity control to avoid splay horizontally and vertically. For this, we used the Legacy audio “Double Helix” system that was carefully designed to direct energy forward and reduce energy in the horizontal and vertical planes due to highly reflective marble, stainless steel and glass finishes. The double helix system uses dipolar waveguide steering, interference technology and horn loading to achieve this challenge while keeping
Cutting through the stumbling blocks: The biggest challenge was the double-height ceiling which needed serious acoustical treatment. Therefore, we had to make sure that the front LCR Speakers fire into the seating space but not scatter around the living area and reverberate. The speakers were cantilevered in the air on structural isolation pads tuned to 7Hz to avoid making the building structure a secondary source. The acoustics were achieved through anti-vibration hangers and clips. The framework on the wall was clad with ply and plasterboards, combined with mass loaded vinyl to achieve the required isolation parameters. All the walls were treated with 112 mm of acoustic floor pads and mass using a mass loaded vinyl system. The ceiling had deep inverted 38

He quotes from the client’s feedback, received on text, “Hi Mehernosh, just wanted to inform you that I was watching a movie in the Home Theatre. I can undoubtedly rate this as one of the best in the world. It was, indeed, a good job”. Final takeaway: “In the past 28 years of my business, we have been privileged to have done many such extreme high-
end theatre rooms and there is always something challenging and interesting in all spaces that we design. INTERVIEW
In conversation with Interior Designer Abhishek Chadha on the growing popularity of Smart Homes among the millennials
The market for luxurious smart homes in India is booming as the real estate industry recovers from the pandemic, and demand has also strengthened in the last three to four months. Moreover, Non-resident Indians (NRIs) are also eager to invest in Indian luxury real estate. “Currently, IoT-enabled smart homes are a fast-growing category that is catering to urban consumers who have easy access to the internet. Therefore, it is still a niche category that is catering to limited consumers. In the future, as there is already a lot of curiosity, but a lack of knowledge about the IoTenabled smart technologies, it would be very important to educate the general public about their use and importance”, says Abhishek Chadha, CEO and Founder, The KariGhars, Bangalore. “Thanks to advancements in artificial intelligence, the smartest homes will be able to truly learn about their owners or occupants, eventually anticipating their needs. Developments in robotics will give us machines that offer a helping hand with cleaning, cooking, and more. New sensors will keep tabs on our well-being. Central to all of this will be the data that smart homes collect, analyze and act upon, helping to turn the houses of the future from a mere collection of gadgets and accessories into truly “smart” homes”, he adds.

INTERVIEW
Why do you think the concept of smart homes is gaining rapid popularity these days? The main factors that are fuelling the growth of smart homes are technological advancement, the need for convenience and comfortable living among the working class today. Global warming, conservation of natural resources, awareness about alternate sources of energy, and upgrading technology are some factors pushing the growth of smart homes in the country. In addition to sophisticated features, smart homes have state-of-theart security systems and energyefficient mechanisms. Electrical connections, functions, and facilities in a smart home can be connected to a smartphone or a computer. In light of the growing economic uncertainties, smart homes offer value-for-money in the long term. While the initial cost of an investment may be high, enhanced comfort and security prove to be beneficial in the long run. In addition, lower energy consumption also helps justify the high investment cost.
Who(consumer groups) are opting for smart homes the most?
Smart locks and home security systems
The millennial power couples with double incomes are eager to opt for smart technology in their homes. With the onset of a pandemic and increasing need to work from home, many homeowners, regardless of age, are opting for the inclusion of home automation. With Bangalore being a highly tech-savvy city, the insistence on smart technology has greatly picked up in the last five years.
Smart heating and cooling
What according to you are the must-have smart home products in today’s contemporary homes? I believe smart homes are not a luxury anymore, they have instead become a necessity. Following are few products which I feel are now an intrinsic part of any contemporary home: Smart speakers and displays like Amazon Echo and Google Home Home Security Cameras Video door phones
Smart lighting Smart kitchen appliances Robot vacuums and mops What role do system integrators play when it comes to designing a smart home? How important is their role? System integrators bring in their experience to integrate a smart home system. Like an architect, a smart home integrator will generally liaise with several other parties – including interior designers, M&E consultants, electricians, and homeowners – throughout a project to ensure that the smart home system they install fits in with both the needs of the family and the architect’s concept for space. Due to their ability to manage an increasingly complex area of a property’s design, the involvement of a smart home integrator in a project makes the

lives of homeowners, architects and developers significantly easier. They have a critical eye for design. System integrators thoroughly test an installation before completion, have the ear for suppliers and manufacturers, and have the manpower to install equipment that needs a specialists’ intervention. Products of which category (lighting, security, entertainment, etc.) witness maximum demand when it comes to integrating smart home devices while doing the interiors? Why? There is a higher demand seen in the automation for lighting and entertainment sections since they allow improved technological conveniences. One can now easily alter the mood of a room with a touch of a button. Smart security is another category in demand with its advantage in 360-degree surveillance. Smart homes have a CCTV surveillance system, which can cover a wide area and record in low light. Smart switchboard 42
automation is also high in demand as it allows easy monitoring of the power consumption of appliances and makes heating, cooling, or cooking far more energy-efficient. Motion sensors or thermal sensors are also rising in need as they can detect when there is no activity in a room and turn off the lights, aiding in limited energy consumption. Smart kitchen and cleaning equipment are now a must-have in every home with the pandemic situation not allowing frequent visits from househelps etc. Which sector(hospitality, commercial, residential) should be inclining more towards Smart Technologies? And why? According to me, the residential sector is seeing a steep incline towards the integration of smart technologies. The pandemic & the lockdown has got everyone wellconnected to digital automation. From small introductions like Alexa to big additions of digital security, people are accepting technology in

their everyday lives. A smart home is considered the epitome of luxury in today’s tech-savvy world, where home automation is increasingly becoming a prerequisite for top-tier luxury real estate. Luxurious lifestyle equipment such as electronic glass shades, mobile video security mechanisms, and voice-operated entertainment systems are almost the norm today. In what ways do you think the concept of smart homes has contributed to the lifestyles of working professionals? Smart homes depend fundamentally on people’s everyday needs. Smart homes incorporate technologies whose intelligent software can learn and adapt to fulfil a particular user’s exact daily requirements. Smart home technology was developed keeping in mind the practical application of each variable in the living sector to augment and support the user experience. The system takes into consideration real-time data collected from the actual

behaviour of the residents over a certain period. It then implements said data into better space utilization, sanitization, cleaning, security, and other functions. It also aims to resolve the issues identified via the daily activities in different scenarios such as health problems and other issues based on aeration or hygiene etc. Customized smart home services have been developed for individual residents based firmly on technical and design solutions to space and other requirements. Smart building technologies entail the usage of Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as sensors, online connectivity, and various software to govern a building’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system (HVAC) system and so much more. This changes the entire ballgame of living for good. Previously, air conditioning, lights, and music systems of our houses had been seen to be operated via electronic tablets, but this takes it a step further, integrating technology with the construction itself.

It started as a small group of passionate and dedicated architectural lighting designers with the goal of elevating the profession in 1969, and has today grown into a global association representing members in over 60 countries. The IALD has gained international recognition as an organization dedicated to supporting a growing network of over 1,500 architectural lighting design professionals around the world who satisfy its rigorous qualification process. It strives to set the global standard for architectural lighting design excellence by promoting the advancement and recognition of architectural lighting designers. The IALD is committed to supporting its members who are passionate about lighting in the built environment. The IALD’s mission is to advance the 48
global profession of architectural lighting design through leadership and advocacy, and serve its members by promoting education, community and engagement. It has over 35 Regions and Chapters to support the interests of its local lighting, design and architecture communities. As a not-for-profit corporation, the IALD relies on members to volunteer their time and knowledge to guide the association. Committee and leadership positions are filled 100% by its volunteer members. The IALD’s governing body is comprised of an 11-member Board of Directors. The board meets quarterly to provide strategic and financial oversight and direction to the CEO who manages the organization on behalf of the board. In 2019, the IALD celebrated a momentous milestone marking 50 years of serving its membership and the entire profession of architectural lighting design. While the IALD is involved in several advocacy and outreach programs, its primary programs include the lighting tradeshow LightFair, the IALD International Lighting Design Awards and the IALD Enlighten Conferences. LightFair (www. lightfair.com) is the premier, annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference, and the preferred marketplace, networking and learning destination for over 500 exhibitors and 25,000 professionals. The LightFair Conference has been setting the standard in continuing lighting education for over 30 years. LightFair is co-owned by the IALD and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES, www.iesna.org) and produced

and managed by International Market Centers (IMC, www. imcenters.com), the world’s largest network of premium showroom and exhibition space. The IALD International Lighting Design Awards program is the longest running award program recognizing architectural lighting design excellence. Receiving an IALD award is universally heralded as the top honor in the architectural lighting design industry. The awards program was initiated in 1983 and honors architectural lighting design that reaches new heights, moves beyond the ordinary, and represents excellence in aesthetic and technical design achievement. The IALD Enlighten Conferences are a series of boutique educational and networking events in the Americas, Asia and Europe that were created exclusively by and for architectural lighting design professionals. The entire architectural lighting community comes together at these conferences to learn, share ideas and explore solutions with likeminded people who are passionate about light. The intimate design of these conferences caps registration to fewer than 500 attendees. This allows for meaningful close connections and thought-provoking discussions with the profession’s foremost experts who inspire and motivate, moving architectural lighting design into the future. The IALD Education Trust was established in 1998 as a not-for-profit charitable educational organization to directly support educators
IALD
and students for the purpose of promoting the study of architectural lighting design. The Trust’s mission is to grow the available pool of entry-level lighting designers by fostering connections between prepractitioners and practitioners of the lighting design profession. The IALD Education Trust renders two different types of programs namely the Scholarship Program and Travel Stipend Program. The IALD Education Trust Scholarship Program aims to encourage students to pursue a career in architectural lighting design. The program offers multiple scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students involved in the study of architectural lighting design from an accredited school. The IALD Education Trust Travel Stipend Program enables architectural lighting educators and students from across the world to attend key industry events, seminars and conferences, such as the IALD Enlighten conferences, LightFair and a variety of international lighting events as an ongoing effort to ensure the future of the architectural lighting design profession. Educators and students may also propose their own international or domestic lighting-related activity for support consideration. The Lighting Industry Resource Council (LIRC) was formed in 1996 to provide a framework within the IALD for enhanced communication between architectural lighting designers and manufacturers and to create an environment conducive to the collaborative improvement of products, services, business practices and architectural lighting design education. Membership in the LIRC is currently open to companies engaged in the manufacture of luminaires, lighting components, light sources, lighting control equipment, lighting software, and luminaire testing laboratories. All educators, professionals and students in the architectural lighting or allied fields can apply to become an IALD member under different grades of membership. Videoconferencing: Platforms and Pitfalls -By Ed Wenck, CEDIA
“When it comes to unified communication, collaboration companies that were not agile enough to move to the cloud really struggled.” - by David Danto, imcca.org
As more and more integrators install unified communications for both home and office, it’s key to know just what’s out there – and what can trip you up David Danto, Director of Emerging Technology for the Interactive Multimedia and Collaborative Communications Alliance (imcca.org), has a pretty interesting take on the pandemic: “When it came to unified communications, we finally had the ‘flush test.’ “Everybody went home and flushed their toilets at exactly the same time to see if the plumbing exploded.” From GoToMeeting to Teams to Zoom, workers around the world went home and logged in. The big players, as we’ve heard over and over, passed that “flush test.” But among them, were there clear winners? Short answer: Not really, since everybody has
50

ONGOING TRENDS their favorite. “When you speak about things like hardware versus software or manufacturer A versus manufacturer B, I’ve learned these things are like religions,” says Danto. “You’re never going to convert anybody – they like what they like, and there are pluses and minuses to all of them.” Having said that, Danto does point out that there was one clear path to success: “Clearly the pandemic proved that being in the cloud and being on software-based applications and cloud-based applications is the winner. When it comes to unified communication, collaboration companies that were not agile enough to move to the cloud really struggled -- the infrastructure couldn’t support it.” As Danto digs into the sudden (and staggering) growth of these platforms as the world settled into the “new abnormal” that was 2020 (“All of them charted like hockey sticks,” he notes), it became clear that firms that had traditionally been “cloud-averse” had changed their minds. “Businesses like financial services were always

resistant,” says Danto. “Now they’re on Microsoft Teams and Zoom without thinking about it. There are still some sectors that are cloud averse: Government and healthcare need more secure platforms than the rest of us use.” The Discovery Process
how to use the various systems is huge.” Margins have changed in this segment, too. “When you wanted to build a video conference system or a collaboration room or something at an organization, you were talking 50, 60, $70,000; you were talking about shutting the room down for a week,” says Danto. You can now get a really excellent hardware-based room system, for something like two grand. If you’re building a boardroom, sure, you still have a lot of integration costs, but the drop-in systems have gotten really, really good in terms of the quality in terms of the machine learning and the systems.” Another reality, according to Danto: You really can’t necessarily pick a brand. “Yes, your organization can say we are a Microsoft Teams organization, because it’s very functional for us -- then you discover your number one client has a different platform and you can’t not be on that platform.” “I highly recommend that any integration firm through and do usability testing across the board on any of these software platforms that you think you might want to recommend or support with your clients --make sure you know them inside out,” says Rissi. “Stay on top of any of their firmware updates, software updates, user interface, and any other changes so that you can be the proper representative to the client. And this goes directly in line with having an ongoing support service. “You can help with changes. You can go back and make updates. But also be really clear in the contract that you are not accepting the final responsibility when it comes to the software.” Meaning: “Don’t leave yourself on the hook if Zoom has an outage.” NOTE: There’ll be a number of courses that deal with the new “resimercial” space – the blending of commercial and residential integration practices – both online and in-person at CEDIA Expo. www. cediaexpo.com
Steven Rissi, CEDIA’s senior director of technical education, has a background in installing (and servicing) these systems, both in the commercial and residential fields – and knows what to look out for as the lines between the two get fuzzy. “The client expectation is actually one of the most difficult things to manage, because oftentimes, they go out on the web and they’re like, ‘Oh, look, Zoom is free -- and I can have my own account.’ But they don’t realize all of the limitations that restrict the free version of that account.” Clients need to understand things such as time limitations and license upgrades for a certain number of users, notes Rissi – things they’re often not aware of. And, he adds, “if you want it to integrate with a room-based system, that’s going to be another license upgrade. “And of course, when it comes to the clients, educating them on how to use the software and

COMPONENTS OF HOME CINEMA SET. Choosing a TV or Projector While a projector provides good value in getting 50-inch+ images. The projector goes way beyond the size of a TV and creates a picture as big as 150 inches in diameter. The best projectors offer at least 2,000 ANSI Lumens brightness.
A smart TV is essential for the online streaming form of any entertainment. The best combination generally, a low price tag with a big screen. A 200Hz panel is best for ultimate blur-free images. Another important aspect is the ease of access to apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other entertainment apps. Speakers and Other Components When using a projector, the projector screen will improve the quality of the images. To improve the number of apps on a smart TV or projector, it is worth investing in Apple TV, Chromecast, or a Fire Stick. As home cinema is mostly about the sound experience, only a 5.1, 7.1, or 9.1 surround sound system will help recreate the multiplex experience. A home cinema system with a range of speakers is easily available from a variety of brands. An AV receiver is essential if opting for separate speakers. Some speakers include Bluetooth music streaming for phones, and apps for optimizing sound quality. For total absorption, a surround sound setup of five/seven/nine satellite speakers and a subwoofer will do. The rear speakers go behind the user, directly opposite the front speakers, and round off a 5.1 set-up. A 7.1 set-up has side speakers, while a 9.1 channel system includes front-height speakers. The subwoofer can go anywhere in the room.

MATTER - The IoT Badge, Sets The Standard For All Smart Home Technology.
An organization responsible for creating, maintaining, and delivering open global standards for the Internet of Things, the Zigbee Alliance announced its organizational renaming to the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) . The Zigbee Alliance has been pushing the lowpower, mesh-supporting network technology. While it may not be a consumer-recognized brand, Zigbee is in several smart home devices. For example, Hue bulbs rely on it for their intercommunication, similar to the numerous remotes, locks, and other devices. One can even find Zigbee on Mars, with the Ingenuity helicopter using the wireless technology for its link to NASA’s Perseverance rover. While Zigbee has travelled far and wide, there is an evident lack of a single communication standard, dominating the market. Instead, multiple wireless standards exist, and companies prefer to use their proprietary connection types.
56
I SMARTHOME WORLD I JUNE 2021
The CSA attempts to bring these companies together. Amazon, Apple, Google, IKEA Signify, SmartThings, and Comcast, Lutron, Comfy, NXP, ASSA ABLOY, along with many other names are already on board. The key to the transition was the initiation of Project Connected Home over IP – aka Project CHIP, renamed as MATTER. Introducing the brand MATTER, and retiring the old alliance name in favour of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). Tobin Richardson, President, and CEO of the Connectivity Standards Alliance said, “This year is historic for the Alliance as our growth and efforts flourish with the demand for smart home and building connectivity. It’s the perfect time to both unveil our new brand, positioning the Alliance as the home for collaboration and development of IoT standards with our Members, and launch these trusted marks recognizable by the market we collectively serve.”
ONGOING TRENDS
Connectivity Standards Alliance MATTER aims to be the new smart home interoperability protocol. With the growing market of the Smart Home Industry, a problem customers faced was the requirement of dedicated hubs that could link up with the right peripheral devices. And they would also have to make decisions over which devices work for their home, based on which assistant and ecosystem they have already embedded. One major benefit of having these smart technology companies come together is to make a more accommodating system for both manufacturers and consumers. The existence of an interoperability protocol, with standard data models, ensures that smart home devices can work across different ecosystems.
Amazon, or Samsung are yet to follow the same. Any smart home devices that do not receive an update, provided by Matter will continue to be active for a while. However, as MATTER accelerates, these devices will slowly experience a lack of support. The MATTER connectivity standard is bound to stimulate the smart technology market, by simplifying development for smart home appliance manufacturers. The promise of improving the efficiency in the developmental and the adoption process, will perhaps also boost buyer indulgence in smart home devices.
For example, the Amazon Echo Show display should work as seamlessly with a Google Nest doorbell as it does with its Ring products. The newly developed Matter mark serves as a seal of approval. It assures that any object built on this standard is reliable by nature, secure by design, and compatible at scale. The brand will be launching in stores by December 2021. Google has been one of the first to spearhead MATTER, followed by these large smart home brands. The company committed, all Nest displays and speakers are updated, enabling them to control Matter-approved devices. Meaning the Google Assistant can control any device with the Matter stamp on it. Newer appliances that support Thread, like the Google Nest Hub and Nest Wi-Fi, will also be Matter connection hubs. This makes it easier for consumers to use Mattersupported devices around the home. Google further endorses MATTER through its Android phones, which provide easy support for the setup and control through the Google Home app & including third-party proprietary options. Apple,

Yamaha is expanding its range of soundbars with SR-C20A and SR-B20A The SR-C20A and SR-B20A, the two additional entry-level models, are both designed to bring out the details and the dialogue in movie and TV viewing. The two new slimline, easy to set up soundbars offers substantial clarity in the vocal tracks. The SR-C20 is a brand new design at the entry point of the Yamaha’s compact soundbar offerings and is just 600 mm long and 64 mm high, designed to fit into environments where space is limited like at games stations, bedrooms, offices and playrooms. The low profile ensures that the TV is not obscured in any way and the speakers include two full-range drivers and a subwoofer handling a total of 100W along with two passive radiators. It includes an HDMI-ARC port, two optical inputs and an analogue stereo mini input for gaming consoles and other portable devices.
On the other hand, the SR-B20 delivers its 120W of power via two tweeters and two woofers. It also includes two subwoofers which have been redesigned for richer and clearer bass. For those who like their bottom end, there’s an additional sub out, so the extra low end can be added. At 910 mm wide and 53 mm tall the B20 is longer and slimmer
than its more compact stablemate but they can both be wall-mounted using the built-in keyholes without the need for an additional bracket. The B20 is covered with a sleek, deep black fabric and has larger, dimmable LEDs for visibility when making adjustments and changing settings.
