How does HCL Affect Human Health? So, what do we know about how HCL affects human health? Studies have shown that poor lighting can have negative health effects -- especially on our circadian rhythm. Also known as our sleep/wake cycle, circadian rhythm is a 24-hour internal clock that “is running in the background of your brain and cycles between sleepiness and alertness at regular intervals,” according to the National Sleep Foundation. Circadian rhythm responds to lightness and darkness. Too much or too little exposure to certain types of light can then affect: •

Education Research has shown that ambient lighting can have a positive impact on children’ chronobiological system, moods, and academic performance. By adjusting lights, it is possible to increase concentration as well as decrease fatigue in classrooms. In the light study conducted by Transfer Center for Neuroscience and Learning in collaboration with Osram, students with the biologically optimized lighting had fewer errors in the concentration test. Contributing to the positive results was the fact that biologically optimized light provides stimulation to the body as if the person was outdoors. Therefore, this light can counteract social jetlag—tiredness in the mornings frequently observed in young people, notably. Residential In the area of residential solutions, a potential cause of health disorders is mostly excessive exposure to blue light, especially during the night hours. Smart lights are trying to help people eliminate this kind of light by simulating natural light. HCL can also help with biorhythm balancing in night shift workers. Output and error rate of monotonous work can be improved. It can influence the performance of the workers by way of several mechanisms—visual performance, visual comfort, visual ambiance, interpersonal relationships, biological clock, stimulation, job satisfaction and problem-solving.

KEF’s Incredible Range of Speakers Lawrence Chu, General Manager, AP & ME Distribution shares his views on KEF’s journey, technical innovation and their latest revolutionary speakers. Congratulations on completing 60 years. What are your future plans for the KEF? Founded in 1961 by BBC engineer Raymond Cooke, KEF is named after its original site, Kent Engineering and Foundry, and continues to manufacture and develop its signature pieces in Maidstone, Kent, UK. Over the years, KEF has firmly established itself at the forefront of audio excellence. From the early adoption of synthetic materials to the pioneering Reference Series that now determines industry standards. In short KEF’s technological innovation, design, and craftsmanship have led the brand to produce barsetting products in speaker design.
What are the latest products in the pipeline? KEF has recently launched LS50 Wireless II. These wireless hi-fi speakers use streaming services to deliver exceptional sound within a minimal set-up. The brilliant performance of the LS50 Wireless II comes from the combination of the exquisitely formed cabinet with advanced Digital Signal Processing – KEF’s Music Integrity Engine and impactful 380W of amplification – a new 100W class A/B amplifier powers the tweeter and a 280W class D amplifier powers the mid/bass driver. The KEF Connect app offers the option to tailor the sound to the environment in which you are listening. The left and right speakers are connected wirelessly, with 24bit/96kHz resolution; alternatively, users may connect with the supplied interspeaker cable for 24bit/192kHz resolution. options even further. There are also wired connections for your TV, turntable, CD player and games console, via the HDMI, analog, optical and coaxial sockets. The LS50 Wireless II is an active speaker and with a compact size. Starting with the latest generation of KEF’s patented Uni-Q technology. This range includes Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) and a reworked motor system to reduce distortion.
Tell us about the use of META in KEF speakers? KEF has announced its ground-breaking use of Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT). This innovation will allow KEF to design a new range of revolutionary products that deliver an unrivalled purity of sound that is so natural that the listeners will feel mesmerised. Harnessing MAT, KEF has created a synthetic material that has the super capacity to absorb all unwanted sound radiating from the rear of the driver, reducing distortion and enabling the prevention of audio distraction. MAT is a highly complex maze-like structure, where each of the intricate channels efficiently absorbs a range of specific frequencies. When combined, the channels act as an acoustic black hole, absorbing 99% of the unwanted sound. Other traditional approaches have only allowed around 60% absorption, so the resulting acoustic quality is incomparable.
Our readers would like to know about Blade and Reference models. Please elaborate. KEF’s BLADE Flagship floor standing speakers and pioneering THE REFERENCE Models, the two high-end KEF speaker series have been updated with KEF’s latest acoustic innovations including Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT™). Thanks to decades of accumulated in-house knowledge and the application of cutting-edge simulation and analysis tools Uni-Q is paired with MAT for Blade and Reference. The bespoke driver delivers a pristine performance from KEF’s flagship loudspeaker. The state-of-the-art Uni-Q driver array can deliver consistently sweet, lucid and lyrical treble, irrespective of the volume. A new ultra-low distortion midrange motor design lowers the total harmonic distortion (THD) in the midrange and reduces thermal compression and improves efficiency.
What are your offerings for the Indian market? People of which segment are the primary buyers of high-end smart home audio systems? KEF offers its entire range of hi-fi, home theatre and architectural speakers (in-wall and in-ceiling) in India. While demand is primarily for home theatre in India, we find the market for stereo speakers on the rise too. Since KEF products are mid to luxury priced, it is targeted toward premium buyers.
In terms of Home Theatre products, KEF’s Custom Install Ci THX range is a super hit among the elite HNI consumer. In fact, India is the biggest market for this range in Asia.
KEF is known for its research legacy. Would you like to elaborate on the same? KEF has been an innovator in sound for 60 years. While it has developed many firsts, some of the groundbreaking technology includes Uni-Q tweeter design where the tweeter is housed in the middle of the midrange speaker to give a more cohesive and natural sound as compared with traditional speakers. Another first is the use of Carbon particles to absorb nitrogen out of air and thereby soften airflow within a speaker cabinet. This allows for greater sound for extremely compact speakers. The latest technology is called Meta, which uses a space-age Metamaterial Absorption Technology to remove unwanted internal cabinet resonance.
Would you like to speak on the designing, and manufacturing of your high-end speakers, technology, and software used in the process? How does that make KEF’s products stand apart? KEF is always at the cutting-edge of audio tech, KEF pioneered the early use of synthetic materials and was the first company to use computer simulation to measure and develop speaker performance, followed by the creation of its disruptive Uni-Q, Uni-Core and revolutionary Metamaterial Absorption technologies. The original collection of high-fidelity speakers, architectural speakers and subwoofers has evolved to include breakthrough wireless speakers, portable Bluetooth speakers and headphones. With a team of talented engineers and in-house designers who work together to maintain the brand’s audio integrity, KEF has also partnered with the likes of Ross Lovegrove, Michael Young, Sir Terence Conran, Eric Chan and Marcel Wanders to bring their unique perspectives to KEF’s product design.
To which countries KEF has successfully gained a foothold, till now? How do you reach the end consumers? Would you like to elaborate on the distribution channel you follow? KEF is present in over 90 countries and is among the leading brands globally. Products are manufactured at plants around the world and sold through a network of experienced audio distributors who in turn sell through selective high-end AV dealers. Only dealers with the ability to showcase and demonstrate the speakers are permitted to promote them. In India, KEF is distributed through PRO FX, which has been KEF’s long-standing and committed partner for 20 years! JULY 2022

Visual Tech offers a futuristic solution and ensures a seamless integration. Ankur Agrawal, Proprietor, Visual Tech in conversation with Smart Home World shares his insights on the cross-compatibility of brands, energy-saving features, and trends in smart automation systems.
28
Our professional readers would like to know about Visual Tech?
What are the key products and services offered by the company?
Visual Tech is a Hyderabad-based proprietary firm founded in 2013. Initially, we concentrated solely on the sale of projectors for residential and commercial spaces. As new trends emerged and technology developed, we diversified into other verticals, including screens, displays, video conferencing and integration. We introduced complete home theatre solutions to our list of services six years ago. Being proprietary we are competing with big brands and competitors. Installations were challenging at first since we only supplied the equipment and the client or a third party was in charge of the installation. However, we eventually began to provide on-site services, which allowed us to generate more revenue.
Our key offerings include projectors manufactured by Sony, JVC, BenQ, and Epson; audio components produced by Denon, Marantz, FOCAL, JBL, Monitor Audio, B&W and Bose; automation components developed by UpHome Automation and RTI. In the display category, we stock products from a number of different companies, like AERO, Samsung, and LG.

What considerations are necessary while installing an AV solution? When a client asks for an AV solution, we first figure out if the user will be able to use the technology easily.
INTERVIEW
We educate the client in operating the product. The after-sales service is also an important criteria when selecting a specific brand. We also see that the spare parts are easily accessible so that we can turn things around quickly. We offer solutions that are compatible with a number of brands because cross-compatibility can be an issue at times. UpHome Automation, for example, works well on both Android and iOS smartphones. Before installing any type of audiovisual system, we analyse the wattage of the speakers and determine which segment of amplifiers are compatible with them. As a result, we receive our solutions from a variety of sources, depending on the client’s needs and budget. Lighting is also an important consideration. To eliminate issues such as glare, we are exceedingly cautious about how the systems are interconnected. When making calculations, we regularly use our database of previous projects. They act as a guide and help us avoid blunders. We make sure to deliver designs to

the client ahead of time to ensure seamless integration. When working on a commercial project, we consider the size of the room as well as the number of individuals that will be present at any given time.
What are the USPs of Visual Tech? At Visual Tech, we prioritise becoming better listeners. This is necessary throughout the design and planning phase so that we can offer our clients a feasible choice to install. By attentively listening, we not only provide a solution that meets the user’s requirements but also save them a substantial amount of money during installation and in the long term. We provide quick turnaround times and are available to service users seven days a week by leveraging inhouse expertise. We provide original serial numbers to maintain our clients’ trust. Our in-house designers develop 2D and 3D drawings for the project at the client’s request to explain how the system works.

Our demo rooms are also a unique selling point. The client’s experience there increases their likelihood of purchasing the solution. We offer demos and have designed packages based on our research and experience that cater to a large number of clients’ individual demands and budgets.
Describe in depth the benefits of custom A/V solutions to the user. Any custom A/V solution gives the user complete control. It is fully up to the individual to watch what and when they wish to watch. An immersive theatre experience in the comfort of their own home. A private media room allows users to unwind and spend time alone or with family and friends. The combination of high-quality visuals, professional audio and full automation brings entertainment to a new level. Access to cutting-edge technology is widely regarded to be advantageous because it increases the market value of the space.
Are your products equipped with energysaving features? What tangible benefits does the user receive? Our initial proposal to the client highlights the energyefficient facilities. Our devices include energysaving features. Eco mode on projectors reduces
the brightness of the lamp. Similarly, amplifiers can be configured to consume less power from a power supply. One of our automation projects included an energyefficiency case study. The project featured complete automation of the home, from entry gates to exhausts and ventilation. Motion sensors were installed to regulate the lights. Human-centric lighting and other smart home automation features were included. The study’s objective was to determine how much energy was consumed and how much was saved as a direct result of automation, as well as where efficiency may be enhanced.
What was the demographic of your target market? Who are the primary buyers? Most of our buyers in the residential market are people who buy or live in villas or bungalows in upcoming areas or in gated communities. We have also worked with apartments in high rises as well. In the commercial segment, we have helped MNCs with video conferencing and AV solutions. In addition to that, we have provided clients in the government sector with video conferencing systems and displays. For panels and displays, hospitals have also been among our clientele. We have marketed displays to people in the hospitality business. There is a growing demand for JULY 2022

AV solutions. There is a market for audio and video solutions. So it’s a new market that we want to look into. We currently have 32 interior designers and 13 architects on board.
Another noteworthy change is that people can now get the technology at a price they can afford. Users now have many options to choose from because so many new brands continue to enter the markets.
What are the most recent trends in the A/V industry?
Due to the shrinking sizes of residential and commercial spaces, how important do you believe space management is for city dwellers? What solution does Visual Tech provide for optimal space management with a touch of luxury?
Our emphasis has always been on the residential segment. We had a number of enquiries for custom AV projects during Covid, however, due to the extraordinarily intensive workload and strong demand, these projects were implemented after lockdown as our cities were opening up. We have seen a rise in commercial projects, although majority of our projects are still residential. In terms of future trends, the customer knows what they want and is operating within a realistic budget.
What was the game-changing breakthrough in the audio-video sector, and how did it impact our way of life? HDMI is a game changer in the market since connectivity has become extremely simple. Any product from any brand that has an HDMI input and output can be paired with any other product from any brand. 32
I SMARTHOME WORLD I JULY 2022
When space is an issue, there are a few options. To begin, we connect via Bluetooth or WiFi. Second, we strive to minimise cabling in such settings by using equipment that allows plug and play, such as short throw projectors, satellite speakers, lower screen sizes and so on. We recently completed a project in which the room was barely 10 x 12. We chose a 90-inch screen, a 4K short-throw projector, and satellite speakers with Atmos. We were able to modify the package to accommodate a reduced room area and deliver a 4K solution. Changing out projectors for television screens and installing a powerful soundbar is yet another strategy for optimising the use of space. The experience
INTERVIEW
that one gets from using one of these systems is comparable to that of using a home theatre.
How would you separate the Indian market for premium display, projection, and audio systems from the global market? What brands do you believe are suited for Indian homes? The quantity of exposure to new technology makes a significant difference. In this regard, the Indian market is still evolving. Alternative technology must be adopted instead of traditional methods. For example, the international market favours digital outdoor advertising to printed billboards. This product has the potential to be profitable in India. Large digital displays in commercial locations can also be a lucrative advertising venture as well. Consumer psychology is another variation between the Indian market and others. Even while the number of Indians adopting AV solutions is expanding significantly, they are still those who are cautious to commit. In other nations, specialised AV solutions have become a way of life but it is considered luxury here. Audiophile-grade speakers from B&W and Focal are part of the home theatre systems. For budgetfriendly alternatives brands like Monitor Audio, JBL Elac, and so on, are the best solutions. Brands
like Bose are frequently asked for a home theatre upgrade rather than a brand-new setup.
What are your areas of expertise in sectors such as commercials, hospitality and retail interiors? Which of your brand’s offerings do you make available for projects of this nature? Our areas of expertise include residential AV solutions as well as digital display for the commercial and retail sectors. When it comes to high-end projects, we offer projectors made by Sony and JVC. And also offer displays made by LG and Samsung. We provide a variety of video conferencing solutions, including interactive screens for conference rooms made by Polycom and Logitech.
What are the most popular and sought-after brands for 4K and 8K cables and accessories? The majority of the cable that we utilise comes from AudioQuest. We do make use of notable names, including premium brands like Kordz.

Scope of Work Ar. Ravi Bathula has skillfully merged modern design elements; seamlessly connected the lush green surrounding with interiors and further hired renowned system integrator Incygys Automation to integrate smart automation systems that has resulted in a perfect comfort zone for the homeowners. Further, one can admire the space planning, where each space is interlinked with each other to form a unified design and is further connected with home automation systems that take care of all the client’s requirements right from security, lighting to entertainment space.
The Client’s Vision The affluent client wanted this home to reflect his status and lifestyle to the visitors. As the client is well travelled and is well versed with the benefits of automation systems, he had given a free hand to
the Ar. Ravi Bathula to install the latest automation systems. Hence, the residence is fully automated with a specific emphasis on lighting and technology. The architect designed the home to provide the client with an experience of a different kind where everything is at the touch of a button.
Project Planning & Implementation Phase Ar. Ravi Bathula studied the project’s scope, the initial technology layout was designed. In the second phase, the architect’s floor plan was used to build and assemble wiring layouts, control devices, displays, equipment racks, speakers and lighting components that included switches and dimmers for the automation system. Next, the architect provided the integrator with all the information necessary to install and program the systems, as well as provide the client with comprehensive system documentation.

Smart Lighting Control
The architect segregated the entire project into 11 zones, including the entryway, kitchen, living room, bedroom, media room, hallways, garage, lawn, walkin wardrobe, bar lounge and outdoor seating area. Fewer compatible brands were utilised to maintain uniformity across the user interface, automation protocols, and system programming.
Smart lighting not only enhances the overall decor of the home but also provides the client with greater control over their lighting. They can manage each smart bulb and LED-integrated fixture wirelessly using their phone, tablet, and smart assistant. The installed lighting system provides the client with numerous tangible benefits in comparison to traditional bulbs, which require a switch to control the lights. Here the smart LED lights are controlled via an app or other smart accessories. The smart LED bulbs last significantly longer and produce less heat than standard light bulbs, requiring less energy and the client can check the status of their lights from anywhere, because they can be controlled remotely as well.
Automation solutions were provided using RTI, KNX, Hager, Legrand, and Basalte components. Invac offered Centralised Vacuum Systems, and the full integration was done by Incygys Automation from Hyderabad.
Installing the System After a detailed study , the architect and the team finally decided to install Invac Central Vacuum Systems. Keeping the client’s convenience in mind, the system was customised to collect all dirt and waste in the house and direct it to an out-of-theway receptacle via tubing installed in the walls. The power source has been concealed and positioned in a fixed location. The team has installed the inlets in convenient spots and around the house. Instead of connecting a portable vacuum to fixed electrical outlets, the team has provided flexibility to the owner to relocate the central vacuum line from the inlet and also provided an automatic dustpan that enables them to sweep dirt into a wall vent.

Smart Automation further provides the ease where the Smart LED bulbs can be set up individually or in groups. The client can configure timers to turn Off or On the lights at a certain time. When they are not at home, the system can be set to switch On and Off the lights mode. Another noteworthy feature is the instant mood lighting, which is preset and the bespoke light fixtures can be operated at the touch of a button to create the required ambience. These light fixtures offer various colour options from warm lighting to white lighting or coloured LED lights.

Lighting and Automation Need of the Hour or Superfluous
Lighting is one of the most important elements in architecture and interior design. Professionals use light to not just illuminate a space but also to create the right ambience. As this is the most discussed topic in the fraternity, Smart Home World took the initiative along with Ar. Surbhi Jindal – Women in Lighting India Ambassador on curating a panel discussion on the topic: Lighting and Automation need of the hour or superfluous. This panel discussion was well appreciated for its in-depth analyses amongst the professionals and

industry at large. For those few who missed out on the panel discussion at the Smart Home Expo 2022, we offer you a cursory view of the panel discussion. Moderated by Ar. Maneck Tandon, Partner, ATPL Lighting was joined by other esteemed panelists dignitaries Ms. Nisha Jamvwal, Partner, Nisha JamVwal Designs, Ar. Tannvi Gupta, Chief Architect, Reliance Industries Ltd., Zubair Ahmed, Managing Director, Studio Plus and Tripti Sahni,

and smooth operation of this huge space. Plus, it has also helped us saves a lot of money, and also provides comfort. If automation systems are integrated after studying the requirement and usability of a space, Smart Automation can be a boon for any project.”
Ar. Maneck started with a brief introduction on how the industry has transformed from aqueducts to windmills. And how mankind has always tried to figure out ways to make things easier. Today, automation is ingrained in almost all forms of production and fabrication for the last few years. The automation bug seems to have followed us everywhere from workspaces to home. So now it is for us to figure out `Is automation a way to help us simplify and declutter our lives or drown ourselves by an excess of apps and remote control our existence? He opened the discussion to a larger audience, as he believed that the discussion should not be restricted to professionals but should also include the end-users of the space making the entire discussion a very interesting and interactive session for the audience. Maneck opened the discussion by asking the panelist, What’s your opinion on Building Automation? Do we need it, is it practical or just sounds good on paper and a nightmare to deal with on the practical side of it? Voicing her opinion Tannvi Gupta said, “Large scale projects should adopt building automation systems for the benefits they provide to the entire project. For example, we have adopted the latest automation systems for the Jio Centre and that has helped us offer flexibility in terms of functioning
Exploring another aspect of Smart Automation systems Maneck asked Nisha JamVwal, “What’s her reaction, when a client comes up to her and says they want everything automated, right from Alexa, Siri, the air conditioning lighting, audio, video security, does that excite you? Or it’s like, oh my God, what have I got into, what’s your reaction? Nisha very enthusiastically said, “I have a fascination for technology. When a client comes with an open mind to adopt technology, I appreciate that because I think we are born in an age of technology and there is so much to learn. I think we all need to embrace technology. Recently, on my visit to a techie hotel in China. All the activities were handled by a Robo. Right from housekeeping, to lighting all activities were technology-driven. But I also want to highlight the fact that when the same technology is overused without understanding the function, it can be a major challenge sometimes.” Nisha further highlighted the fact that the approach to such technology is different for different age groups. “It is like a double-edged

Tripti Sahni explaining her thought process said, “Automation is definitely a part of the entire process, but for me it’s secondary. I think the first step when I design the lighting for any space is trying to understand the context. What’s the scale of the space, the individual using the space and also the age group using the space. It also depends on the what is the purpose of the space? Because each individual belonging to a different age group and will have a different requirement.” Adding her views on striking the right balance Nisha said, “Automation is equally important, but there has to be a balance. People should be educated to use the technology and the designer has to study the requirement of the client before offering solutions to their client.” Maneck asked Tannvi: Does the need to automate depends on the scale of the project? How do you as an architect approach the space? Tannvi expressed her views and said, “The scale is secondary, the end-user should be the focus when designing.” Mr. Zubair Ahmed, Managing Director, Studio Plus
Maneck asked Zubair Ahmed, What is his preference Monolithic platform or a decentralized autonomous system? What do you think is more practical?
sword, where we have to consider the senior age group while designing a project. We have to create a user-friendly design for the senior citizen, who is still learning how to use a mobile phone. But at the same time, we need to change with time and have to be receptible to new technology. It is all about striking the right balance”
Adding his views on the same Zubair Ahmed said, “Depends on the scale of the project. If you’re doing a very large project, you still would like to have a wired system, which has firewall security, all of that built into it. It’s, pretty much all wired up and it’s controlled through a building management system. For large-scale projects yes, wired systems are preferable but for home, you can opt for Wi-Fi-enabled systems because basically in residential systems you want to be in control of things. But again, keeping the end user’s age group and preference is an important deciding factor in this whole process. After all, you are building that
Maneck asked Tripti Sahni: You’re an architect and a lighting designer, how important is automation and the presence or lack of it in your design process? When you visualize a project, do you visualize the light first and then automate it or are they sort of gel together? What’s the process?

space for him so his preference should be a priority when deciding. I personally, would prefer a wired system. But then again, we need to make it more secure so that somebody doesn’t breach it.
especially urban plazas which are used by a lot of people from different walks of life.
Speaking on maintenance and compatibility Tripti Sahni said, “Maintenance is a major challenge and compatibility is a major issue. So, if these things are resolved a lot of things can be sorted. For bigger projects, we do need automation systems
Further adding insight on the same Tannvi adds, We need to have a unified system in place from where you can control everything. It’s very important that though each space is designed individually, there should be a unifying platform so that the end-user can actually control it from a single point. And he’ll be able to take care of all the

issues that you are bringing up. Maneck asked Trupti, If ever she has come across a situation, where she would not recommend automation, and if so, why? Trupti said, “I think they’re quite a few areas where we don’t need to automate. It’s definitely not necessary for example, in smaller homes. If you design with care and follow a hierarchy of wattages and brightness levels and use old-school zoning and dimmers, you would get the same impact, as the high-end automation systems. However, when you scale it up and you look at projects, you need an automation system. The other areas where automation is definitely required but also has its drawbacks is when you’re designing monuments or when you’re designing public spaces, often the lights malfunction.” Further adding his insight Zubair said, “I started using automation 18 years ago. I have used brands like ABB and Schneider, which were wired. You could control everything through these switches. Technology has come a long way and people have embraced it. But now that we have adopted technology, the focus of the brands should be to simplify the use and they should work towards providing a reliable backup service. Today, we

have various brands but we need a reliable backup service option. Maneck asked the panelist What do they think about the future of automation? Zubair: This is a very tricky question. I mean, I think the operating systems like Apple and Google are going to control the entire world. Tripti: I said gradually people will realize its importance and would want automation systems integrated into their homes. Maneck concluded the session by saying technology is evolving rapidly. However, endusers will shape the market. We as designers need to stay abreast, not only of the technological developments but also the way people respond to them. Some may choose to restrict automation to lighting and some may decide to adopt the latest automation systems. But I think it’s safe to say the future is `Automated’, but within that, whether `less is more’ is up to an individual. He thanked all the panelist and the audience. After a well-deserved round of applause from the audience, each panel member was graciously thanked and they received a token of appreciation from Surabhi Jindal.

CEDIA’s Flagship IST Certification Earns Worldwide ANSI/ISO Accreditation CEDIA, the global association for the home technology industry, today announces that the Integrated Systems Technician (IST) certification has earned thirdparty accreditation certification in accordance with the global ISO/IEC 17024:2012, General Requirements for Bodies Operating Certification of Persons. The IST certification joins the Cabling and Infrastructure Technician (CIT) as CEDIA’s second ISO/IEC 17024-accredited standard. Together, these two certifications represent a globally recognized career path for residential technology integrators. CEDIA’s ISO/IEC 17024 accredited certifications demonstrate to other trades, customers, and lawmakers that the custom integration industry is a clearly defined profession with rigorous, widely accepted criteria for competency. The conformance process was overseen by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB), a wholly owned subsidiary of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). “Certification is where CEDIA’s advocacy and workforce development efforts meet,” says David Whitney, Senior Director of Certification at CEDIA. “As these globally accredited certifications gain adoption and recognition, we strengthen the position of the whole smart home industry,” added Whitney. CEDIA created the IST certification to be both rigorous and accessible. Industry veterans who hold CEDIA’s earlier ESC-T certification will have a pathway to transition to the accredited IST certification without retesting. CEDIA also provides a wide range of preparation resources for new certification candidates. The IST: A New Gold Standard The IST recognizes experienced

integration technicians who can perform the full scope of pre-wire (first fix) and trim-out (second fix), including system testing and troubleshooting. ISTcertified individuals possess a broad range of essential technical skills, up-to-date knowledge of standards and recommended practices, and strong conceptual foundations. This certification builds on the foundational knowledge encompassed by the CIT exam, and serves as the basis for CEDIA’s advanced certifications and curriculum. Holding an IST certification indicates that an individual is experienced, competent, and committed to professional development and ethics. “The value of IST certification is in the height of the bar set by the Certification Commission and the IST working groups. You really have to know your stuff to pass this exam,” said Pete Trauth, CIT, IST-SME, Founder of Nirvana Home Entertainment. “There are thousands of residential systems integrators out there. Only a handful of us are IST certified. This certification gives homeowners
“As our business grows and we add employees, it is important that we have everyone starting with a solid and consistent foundation of knowledge,” said Amanda Wildman, CIT-SME, ISTSME, Owner of TruMedia. “IST Certification offers that to my team. It allows us to seamlessly move through the various stages of our jobs regardless of which team member works on each piece. It is that foundation that gives us the confidence to deploy a robust, easy-to-use system to our clients that will truly enhance their lives,” added Wildman. Pathways to Certification All current IST certifications are now ISO/IEC 17024 accredited. Holders of the previous-generation technician certification, the ESC-T, can transition to the IST during their next renewal period. Current ESC-T holders must earn 30 Continuing Education Units, submit a renewal application, and sign a code of conduct agreement to transition to the IST. Renewal application fees will be waived for those transitioning from the ESC-T. Those who don’t yet hold an IST or ESC-T must complete two prerequisites before challenging the IST exam: they must have at least one year of industry experience, and they must hold a CIT or equivalent certification. CEDIA offers a wide range of study resources for both the CIT and IST, including textbooks, online self-paced courses, in-person and hybrid Technician School, and practice tests. Certification hopefuls can also enrol in online study sessions and take either test onsite at the upcoming CEDIA Expo in Dallas. JULY 2022
