PoE++: The Efficient, Cost-Effective Networking Technology
Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology has been around since the early 2000s, but it has come a long way since its inception. The latest version of PoE, PoE++ (Power over Ethernet Plus Plus), is a significant improvement over its predecessors, offering higher power capabilities and improved efficiency. PoE++ can deliver up to 100 watts of power over Ethernet cables, making it suitable for powering many useful electronics and devices. This networking technology has gained popularity due to its cost-effectiveness, flexibility, and ease of installation.
With the growing demand for devices that require higher power and bandwidth, PoE++ technology has become increasingly important in today’s technological landscape. The advancement in technology has resulted in a significant increase in the number of devices that require connectivity and power. These devices include security cameras, access points, VoIP phones, smart lighting, displays and more.
PoE++ technology is an efficient and cost-effective way to power and control these devices, eliminating the need for additional power cables and outlets, which reduces installation and maintenance costs. Moreover, it enables remote management and control of devices, allowing for more efficient and convenient network management.
The environmental benefits of PoE++ technology also cannot be overstated. By eliminating the need for additional power supplies, it reduces power consumption and energy waste along with a reduction in the overall manufacturing of electronics components.
PoE++ technology has a significant role to play in meeting the demands of today’s connected world, enabling efficient and cost-effective power and data transmission for a wide range of devices.
History of PoE Standards
The need for powering IP phones and wireless access points using Ethernet cables led to the development of PoE technology in the early 2000s. Before PoE, these devices required separate power cables and outlets, making installation and maintenance more complicated and expensive.
The first PoE standard, IEEE 802.3af or PoE Classic, was introduced in 2003, defining how up to 15.4 watts of power could be delivered over Ethernet cables, providing enough power to support low-powered devices such as IP phones and access points. This early version of PoE used two pairs of wires in the Ethernet cable, with one pair carrying data and the other carrying power.
In 2009, the IEEE introduced IEEE 802.3at, also known as PoE+ or PoE Plus. This standard increased the maximum power delivery to 30 watts, enabling support for higher-powered devices such as pantilt-zoom CCTV cameras and thin clients. PoE+ used all four pairs of wires in the Ethernet cable to deliver power and data, resulting in better power delivery efficiency.
The latest PoE standard, IEEE 802.3bt, also known as PoE++ or PoE Plus Plus, was introduced in 2018. This standard further increased the maximum power delivery to 90 watts, making it suitable for even higher-powered devices such as monitors and remote network switches. PoE++ uses all four pairs of wires in the Ethernet cable to deliver power and data and includes new power negotiation protocols to ensure safe and efficient power delivery.
The development of PoE standards has been critical to the widespread adoption of PoE technology. The IEEE has been instrumental in the development of PoE standards, with three primary standards currently in use: IEEE 802.3af, IEEE 802.3at, and IEEE 802.3bt.
Benefits of PoE++
One of the key benefits of PoE++ technology is its higher power capabilities. PoE++ can deliver up to 90 watts of power over Ethernet cables. This increased power delivery capability allows for the adoption of PoE technology for a wider range of devices, reducing the need for additional power cables and outlets, and simplifying installation and maintenance.
Another benefit of PoE++ is improved efficiency. PoE++ uses all four pairs of wires in the Ethernet cable to deliver power and data, resulting in better power
delivery efficiency compared to earlier versions of PoE. Additionally, PoE++ includes new power negotiation protocols to ensure safe and efficient power delivery, further improving efficiency and reducing the risk of damage to connected devices.
PoE++ also offers more features compared to earlier versions of PoE. For example, PoE++ enables remote management and control of devices, allowing for more efficient and convenient network management. This feature is particularly useful for devices located in hard-to-reach areas, such as security cameras or access points mounted on high ceilings. With PoE++, these devices can be easily managed and controlled from a central location, without the need for additional cables or power outlets.
Another important benefit of PoE++ is lower installation costs. PoE++ eliminates the need for additional power cables and outlets, reducing the amount of time and materials required for installation. Additionally, PoE++ only requires one cable to be run, further reducing installation costs and making it easier to install devices in hard-toreach areas.
Best practices for implementing PoE++
While PoE++ technology offers many benefits, it is important to follow best practices when implementing it to ensure safe and efficient operation. Some best practices include:
• Using high-quality Ethernet cables: Highquality Ethernet cables are essential for efficient and safe power delivery. Choose cables rated for PoE++ that are able to handle the required power delivery without excessive voltage drop or heating.
• Terminating cables correctly: Ensure connectors have the correct ratings to carry the PoE++ signal and are terminated securely and correctly using the right methods.
• Installing cables correctly: Ensure cables are installed correctly and away from other high power cables using conduit or cable trays. Also make sure cables are bundled together, with consideration of the heat that must be dissipated by the cable and recommendations by the cable manufacturer.
• Checking power requirements: Before connecting devices to a PoE++ network, it is important to check their power requirements and ensure that the network can provide sufficient power. This can be done using a PoE tester or a power meter.
• Managing power usage: It is important to monitor power usage on a PoE++ network to avoid exceeding power budgets and causing damage to connected devices. Power usage can be monitored using network management software or a power meter.
• Using surge protection: This is especially important when devices are installed outside. This should be installed at both ends of the ethernet cable to provide protection for the PoE switches and the remote device.
• Ensuring proper ventilation: Devices that are powered by PoE++ may generate heat, which can damage the device or cause a fire. It is important to ensure that devices are properly ventilated to prevent overheating.
Future trends in PoE technology
PoE technology is expected to continue to evolve in the coming years, with new standards and features that will enable even higher power delivery, better efficiency, and integration with other technologies. Some future trends in PoE technology include:
• Higher power capabilities: PoE standards are expected to continue to increase the maximum power delivery, enabling the adoption of PoE technology for even higher-powered devices.
• Higher efficiency: PoE technology is expected to become even more efficient, reducing power consumption and waste.
• More features: PoE technology is expected to include more features that enable remote management and control of devices, further simplifying network management.
• Integration with other technologies: PoE technology is expected to better integrate with other technologies, such as wireless charging and more IoT devices, to enable more efficient and convenient power and data transmission.
• Use in industrial applications: PoE technology is expected to be adopted for a wider range of industrial applications, enabling more efficient and cost-effective power delivery and control for industrial equipment.
Conclusion
PoE++ technology offers numerous benefits over earlier versions of PoE, including higher power capabilities, improved efficiency, more features, and lower installation costs. However, it is important to follow best practices when implementing PoE++ to ensure safe and efficient operation. Future trends in PoE technology are expected to further improve power delivery, efficiency, and integration with other technologies, making it an even more versatile and cost-effective solution for powering and managing devices. As the use of PoE technology continues to expand, it will be interesting to see how it is adopted in various industries and applications. It goes without saying that high quality cables can make all the difference when deploying PoE infrastructure.

Fusion of Sleek Design and Smart Home Technology
Ar. Manish Kumat has designed a Smart Home for a young couple in Indore that brings added comfort and convenience through smart automation to the homeowners.
Ar. Manish Kumat Design Cell headed by Manish Kumat has the extraordinary talent of seamlessly integrating nature as a part of interior spaces. The award-winning architect has designed some of the landmark projects over the years. Manish has recently designed a project in Indore for a young couple, where he has seamlessly integrated Nature, Design and Smart Automation which has not just provided ease of convenience but also provided foolproof security and energy efficiency which is the need of the hour.
This young couple wanted their four-bedroom apartment spread over an area of 1,890 sq ft to be converted into a spacious three-bedroom apartment with contemporary interiors and smart home technology. Adhering to the brief Ar. Manish broke a few walls to create a spacious space such as a large master bedroom with a lounge area and a walkin closet space. In addition, Manish also created sleek, easyto-maintain interiors, so he opted for furniture and fittings with straight lines and materials that are easy to clean.
Explaining his design approach and use of Smart Automation, Manish said, “I focused on providing the client with amenities to be functional and remotely controlled to offer them security, convenience, and energy saving. I had extensive discussions with them to understand their requirements. They wanted home automation from entrance access to the control of lighting, fans, airconditioning, television, and curtains. Initially, we were a bit conservative in our approach toward smart technology due to fluctuations in voltage and unpredictable electricity supplies. However, this scenario has changed in the past few years as electricity supply has improved. Another point
is that smart home automation is easier for the tech-savvy who easily understand how to control devices by an App on their phone or a networked device.” He further adds, “Though personally, I had not previously worked on smart home technology, we did thorough market research and went ahead and designed their home. We incorporated smart technology in different aspects of their home and living in a way that was inconspicuous while keeping to our design ethos of neat spaces with accent elements.”
After extensive research of the brands available in the market, the architect decided on Lutron for the lighting control system. For the lighting fixtures, they opted for Plus Light Tech which has a huge range of good quality fixtures and a good warranty as well. “The combination of Lutron and Plus Light Tech turned out to be amazing. After a thorough study of how smart lighting technology was to be incorporated into the home, each light had a separate wiring system as it went to the Lutron server. This had to be worked out in detail. We used a DALI driver that has a single interface for all light fixtures and controllers. This driver functions well. It helps to dim and tune the colour temperature of the lights. Thus, in one single light, the client gets a choice of temperature possibilities that makes it efficient and economical. For the entrance door, we opted for Yale digital door lock that offers access by a key as well as keyless (via number and biometrics).”
Advantages of Smart Automation
“As the client is a young couple and technology savvy, they found it easy to operate the automated systems. They are thus able to work with many amenities as per their preferences. For the lighting, they can create an ambiance in the interiors by opting for a particular tone and brightness of light such as soft in the evenings or in the living room and bright in the kitchen area. For controlling the sound of the television, we provided a sound bar that has a discreet speaker system that creates an effect close to that of a home theatre. A sound bar is space efficient and sound-effective.
Advice to Budding Professionals
“Clients are more tech-savvy today than in previous years. So, I would suggest that budding professionals should study products in the market, meet vendors and educate themselves about products and systems. Firstly, one must study the dynamics of the location of the site in terms of the availability of a regular supply of electricity and products if a backup is required. I feel it is better to go in for a high-quality product with a good warranty of several years so there is a good performance. A backup should be planned in case any system does not function, and this backup should be available at the earliest so the inconvenience caused to the client is minimized. All the systems should be
explained thoroughly and demonstrated to the client before the project is handed over to the client.” Overall, the architect has successfully combined his design philosophy and Smart Home Automation and delivered the projects within a stipulated time period to his clients.

Merging Innovative Design with Smart Home Technology
Salankar Pashine & Associates collaborated with Visual Vibrations Pvt. Ltd., to design a Smart Home for a high-profile client in Nagpur.
Salankar Pashine & Associates headed by CoFounders Anurag and Pallavi Pashine is a renowned architecture and design firm based in Nagpur. The firm has over the years designed several high-end residences. For this home, the client desired a bold design and a luxurious lifestyle. This 5,000 sq. ft. home named Lake View Apartment is segregated into multifunctional spaces that include a party zone, a spacious study, a home office, a home theatre, and a larger terrace garden with self-recreation areas. The designers have skilfully connected the two adjacent apartments and opened up the entire home to the vicinity.
As the conjoined two apartments had two entrances, the primary entrance is from the living room, while the other is from the study, which is usually kept locked. The exterior of the abode is creatively designed featuring blue shades in contrast with the neutral palette. An intriguing feature of this space is a wall with linear patterns, which is enhanced by ambient lighting that sufficiently illuminates the space, making it pleasant and welcoming. Moving through the entrance, neutral tones dominate the space that is juxtaposed with a striking yellow shoe rack. The stunning chandelier is the focal point of the space, giving an impression of the client’s unique and dynamic personality.
Space Planning and Design
The living space, which is adjacent to the entryway, is designed around a neutral background. The space is furnished with couches composed of metal legs and upholstery in bold grey and blue tones. The other family lounge in this part of the residence includes a small bar space. The living space includes soft and comfy couches, patterned panelling on the wall that extends to the ceiling, and floral printed upholstery on the chairs. The puja room in this portion is designed in a contemporary style with a linear profile in white tones, creating a serene and peaceful environment. The setting is complemented by metallic-colored traditional motifs.
Adjoining the living area is son Hridaan’s bedroom. Blue, white, and grey colours can be seen throughout the room in the textile, walls, and furniture. The bluecoated partly timber panelling on the wall is supported by the beige padded headboard. The attractive pendant lighting on the side of the bed functions as task lighting and is an addition to ambient lighting that together effectively illuminates the room. The son is a fan of Harley Towler, an England badminton player, and his poster is displayed on the cupboard, mirroring the interest and desire of the son. Next to it is the mother’s bedroom, which is designed in neutral tones with modest furniture and decor. The
master bedroom has a walk-in closet and access to the garden patio. The ambiance is composed of a metal-framed bed with metal-framed artwork on the opposite wall along a metal-framed shelf. An accent chair with a footstool and a console with the same floral print brings texture to the aesthetics of the bedroom.
The study space is connected to the family lounge. The study is configured with simple furniture and highlights a tree abstracted painting. The other son of the couple, Abir’s bedroom is adjacent to the study with a fixed glass window installed on the common wall. This room is painted mint green and has strong textures from the wooden flooring and shelf. One wall is panelled with posters of football players, reflecting his passion for the game. The walk-in wardrobes include large mirror doors that give the impression of double the area. The bathroom is highlighted by live planters and decorated in vibrantly coloured marble with a trace of green hues.
The image of luxury and comfortable living is brought to life in the project through the rich material palette, artistic expressions, and attention to individualized style. The neutral-hued abode is elevated by brightly coloured furnishings, wall decors, prints, and patterns, establishing an epitome of a luxurious lifestyle for its residents.
Smart Automation and Advantages
Vikas Kothari, MD, Visual Vibrations Pvt. Ltd., was approached by the architects to provide Smart Automation. After a detailed study of the client’s lifestyle, the System Integration team opted for KNX Dali protocol and all the area in the home has been seamlessly equipped with Smart Automation products of the I-Luxus and Theben.
With home automation, clients can easily manage their spaces with a variety of interfaces, including voice commands, touchscreens, and smartphone Apps. Additionally, there are customisable and adjustable lighting effects that can be tuned or dimmed to suit their needs. The automation scenes are programmed to meet different personal preferences. Plus, it also takes care of security and surveillance.
The integration of automation technology in this home results in a substantial change in our daily activities. Hence, it is crucial for every household to invest in establishing a more intelligent and efficient living space. Professionals should aim to integrate smart automation technologies into both residential and commercial settings. This approach can lead to the creation of more comfortable and efficient spaces, which may even enhance safety and convenience.

KANODIA’S OFFICE
Nestled in the heart of Noida, Kanodia’s Office is a testament to the beauty of concrete and the power of biophilic design, creating a workspace that is both functional and visually stunning. Envisioning a modern workspace with contemporary design elements, Geeta Vaibhav Architects has designed this 3,760 sq ft office, with a focus on functionality, efficiency, and Smart Technology. The design language is choreographed in a minimalist manner while drawing attention through unconventional decor choices and biophilic inclusions.
The common denominator in the spatial narrative of the office, not surprisingly, is concrete— an obvious material choice that would deck up the office spaces of Kanodia. The new office, while following a rustic aesthetic language, has a predominantly neutral palette with different points of visual interest. The concept was to enhance the experience of concrete but in an atypical fashion, with lush finishes and softness of the material. The bare shell was moulded and treated as per the design vision into a reception and a waiting area, two director rooms, a conference room & different cabins for the staff, and a terrace garden.
The design integrated the client’s love for simple, clean, minimal things and warm, cosy spaces into consideration. This shaped the initial material and

colour selection, which embraces tones of beige and cream with accents of metals, dusty blues and rusty textures. The neutral colour palette used in the spaces blends seamlessly with the natural texture of wood, stones, and metals. The client’s preferences also informed the planning to be open and flexible with minimal partitions creating multi-functional spaces. The floor plan is segregated into cabins and a conference room, overlooking the terrace garden outdoors. Every accessorising in the office, the butterfly chandelier in the conference room, for instance, picked on melding the old and new, marrying vintage decor pieces with the contemporary bones of the project. The furnishings, on the other hand, display eye-catching colours and modern forms, as a result of ergonomic design.
The Director’s rooms, for instance, are surrounded by wall-sweeping windows, made of switchable smart glass, that invite the outdoors into interiors, also satisfying the needs of sustainability and energy efficiency that Kanodia always stands for. Both the Director’s rooms get an earthy makeover and hardly diverge from the choices of materials. The flooring choices were also sustainable yet diverse, unlike the colour palette, featuring White Santuario stone at the entrance, Armenia grey stones in the cabins and conference room, and hardwood flooring with an inlay pattern in the Director’s rooms. Although the walls were essentially dressed in concrete, they were treated with a mix of materials, that includes the combination of paint & textured wallpaper in the lobby; fabric panelling and metal profile in the Director’s room; and veneer with metal sheets in the conference room.
The extensive intent followed in the process of construction is to integrate nature as a part of the design. A significant example is the terrace garden planned with a water body, that captured views of the surroundings to take attention away from the mundane. Such locations in the workplace also break free from the monotony of the normal ‘Mondaying’ environment in the office, creating a more peaceful ambience around.
