Gaining control over luminance!
SNEHA KANRAR SOM
Today, “lighting”, which has always been one of the main elements of home interiors, is much more than just illumination. Lighting, these days, brings to the user’s plate, an array of conveniences, versatility and finesse. Gone were those days, when the light switches had to be switched on/off manually, every time one entered/exited a room, to prevent the electricity bill from creating a hole in the pocket. The advent of LED smart lighting and lighting controls has revolutionized the entire concept of lighting. Lighting control systems, encompassing components ranging from wall-mounted dimmers with switch actuators, sensors, ballasts, LED drivers, microcontrollers, transmitters and receivers, intelligent luminaries to lighting management software systems, have brought in the idea of customizability and flexibility. One can now effortlessly alter the colour and luminance intensity of the room lights, as per the requirement of his/her mood, through certain apps on a smartphone. Today’s avant-garde smart lighting solutions are powered with AI and come with integrated sensors, which takes care of the energy regulation as well as the management part, on our behalf, and effectively cuts down electricity consumption by automatically turning off the room lights, immediately once it senses the room to be empty.
In today’s competitive world with dynamic and exasperating work culture, what people need the most is the utmost amelioration of their mental health. Did you know that lighting is one of the crucial regulators of mental health and productivity at work? Scientifically, different shades and intensities of light have distinctive impacts on human psychology. Specific shades and intensities of light can substantially increase one’s focusing capacity at work, and certain tones and brightness levels can make a person feel lethargic and sleepy. Therefore the right kind of lighting is mandatory for both offices, where one spends a major part of the day, and homes, where they come back to, after a long stressful day. Offering the best illumination experiences and maximum energy efficiency, intelligent lighting and lighting control immensely help us preserve a healthy state of mind and save a lot of our hard-earned money!

A Command over Luminance: Intelligent Lighting and Lighting Controls
Bringing flexibility, increased visual comfort, aesthetics, energy saving, durability and security, all under one umbrella. Sustainability and convenience are the need of the hour. Today, every gadget, commodity and even concept needs to be future-proofed, so are the lighting systems. From incandescent bulbs, halogens, CFLs to modern LEDs, the lighting industry has come a long way. The current tech-savvy is magnified with smart or intelligent lighting, which possesses automated or mechanical abilities, and intelligent lighting controls, which are designed to build up energy efficiency while enhancing accessibility as well as productivity. “Smart lighting is an innovative technology that is replacing conventional lightings such as incandescent bulbs, halogens, CFLs, etc. with more efficient LED lights and sensors for energy conservation”, says Mayank Visariya, Product Marketing Specialist- Building Automation, Electrification-Smart Building Division, ABB. hand, network lighting control systems use low energy wireless transmissions to send and receive signals while enabling the user to remotely manage and control multiple lights through a smartphone or tablet. With the help of specific intelligent lighting software, one can change light levels, set up different scenes or sunset/sunrise times, group luminaires and a lot more. Also, data can be stored and usage charts can be created to monitor energy levels accurately. Under the lighting control umbrella comes dimmer switches, which allow one to adapt the light levels to create the desired ambient illumination. Available in eye-catching wallmounted panels, keypads or touchscreens, dimmers use minimum electricity and help to reduce the energy cost of a building. Besides, LED lighting and lighting controls of good quality are capable of providing more than 50,000 hours of illumination. Therefore, smart lighting and lighting controls can be considered as a true amalgamation of aesthetics and feasibility. “Apart from reducing energy consumption and cutting electricity costs, smart lighting also offers numerous other advantages to end-users. Instead of using switches and push buttons, smart lights use motion sensors that can automatically switch the lights on and off when the consumer enters or leaves a room. Moreover, smart light bulbs use LEDs that can be adjusted using a smartphone so that they can change colour according to the user’s requirements and can also be
switched on and off from a remote location. Some of the other major factors driving the smart light market in India include increasing affordability of smart lights, technological advancements, development of various smart cities, increasing awareness levels, etc”, explains Visariya.
Market Scenario Valued at $7.49 in 2019, the global smart lighting controls industry is expected to reach $26.06 billion by 2027(as per Allied Market Research reports). As intelligent lighting controls are proved to be energy efficient and performance enhancers, these are being increasingly adopted by households to primarily reduce energy consumptions. This is because people, today, are understanding the need for energy management and the concept of sustainability. The rapid adoption is one of the key factors that is immensely contributing to the growth of the global intelligent lighting controls market. Besides, the governments of numerous countries all over the world have formulated regulations to productively utilize and manage electricity consumption. For example, China’s five-year plan targets energy-efficient projects and European 2020 energy aims to reach netzero energy consumption in both private and public buildings. Government initiatives like these are also expected to lift the adoption of lighting controls worldwide.

More home improvement projects were witnessed globally and locally, which did stimulate the demand for lighting controls”, says Ravi Kant Sharma, Business Manager, Lutron.
Ravi Kant Sharma, Business Manager, Lutron. COVID-19 pandemic has seriously affected the global commercial sector. The lengthened lockdown and multiple uncertainties had restricted people from stepping out of their houses, which brought in the culture of work from home. This created the need for home up-gradation, with suitable working and relaxing lights. “As a result of prolonged lockdown, suspension of travel and business activities, the hospitality industry, which is one of the major markets for lighting controls, faced a huge deterioration. Many companies have adopted home office policy, which in turn reduced the desire for workplace expansion

Among the whole range of components, like sensors, ballasts & LED drivers, dimmers & switch actuators, microcontrollers, transmitters & receivers, and intelligent luminaries, comprised by the intelligent lighting controls, the ballast and LED drives segment are expected to fetch the highest revenue in the coming years. Besides, the intelligent luminaires segment is also anticipated to grow briskly, while registering a striking CAGR. Research says, North America, with the highest revenue contribution of $2,616.4 million in 2019, is projected to reach $7,696.3 million by 2027, with a CAGR of 15.0%. Conjointly, North America and Europe accounted for around 63.3% share in 2019, where North America alone constituted 34.9% share approximately. Besides, Asia-Pacific is expected to observe a 20.5% CAGR by 2027. The increasing popularity of LED bulbs and architectural lighting for both indoors and outdoors is an outcome of the speedy transformation of the use of these lightings. LEDs considerably reduce energy consumption and are available in a huge array on both online and offline markets. This eventually results in increased sales. Countries like the US, the UK, China and India are currently witnessing a high demand for intelligent lighting and lighting controls due to mandated government regulations.
Intelligent lightings for mental health “Numerous studies have proven that accessibility to daylight and outside views can improve productivity and mental health. But, the proper control of sun-glare or excessive artificial light is important for eye care. A perfect balance of natural and artificial light can not only enhance the occupant’s comfort but also improve health and productivity. The ability to control the light level and create the right ambience for different activities and moods is essential for a quality life, be it at home or work. There are times when you need to roll up your sleeves and concentrate. Also, there are times when you just want to lay back and relax. This kind of convenience and options cannot be experienced without the help of a good lighting control system. A lighting control system can help you create the right ambience at a touch of a button”, says Sharma. Supporting the above statements, Doshi says, “It has been scientifically proven that lighting directly affects human health. For example, blue LED light is proven to affect the secretion and depletion of hormones. 18
I SMARTHOME WORLD I NOVEMBER 2021
Blue light suppresses the production of melatonin that keeps us awake and functioning throughout the day. Our sleep and wake cycles are also impacted by lighting exposure. Light syncs with our body clock and keeps the circadian rhythm of our body balanced. This is very important to maintain a healthy sleep and wake pattern”. “In an office, adequately lit rooms increase the productivity of the employees to a great extent. Intense bright lights or glare often lead to straining and stress which in turn reduces productivity. Well-designed offices often feature mildly bright smart lighting that leads to lesser eye fatigue, reduces headaches, improves alertness and indirectly impacts the daily productivity and efficiency of the employees. Proper lighting helps employees maintain a healthy state of the mind. Mental health is an important aspect when it comes to lighting. Inadequate and improper lighting can negatively impact our mental state by increasing anxiety levels, reducing the concentration and efficiency”, adds Doshi.
Major barriers hindering the industry growth “Based on surveys and interviews of stakeholders covering consumers, manufacturers, system integrators, builders, architects, service providers etc. (conducted as part of the baseline assessment of Indian Smart Home Market), key barriers to adoption of smart home automation products and services were identified. The major barriers are limited awareness among consumers regarding energy savings and Return on Investment (RoI), cost of acquisition of technology, absence of relevant data privacy and cyber security

policies, product testing and certification facilities, product regulation including interoperability, a mandate for builders for home automation, case studies based on locally available data, nudges, gamification etc. for generating consumer interest”, says Visariya.
Latest Innovations “Intending to promote a healthy carbon footprint, the industry has come up with the latest green initiatives like daylight harvesting, a technology that makes use of natural sunlight to regulate indoor artificial lighting. This technology contributes to the modern requirements of lighting control systems and helps make the system smarter. Personalization is another luxury that consumers enjoy through these devices and systems. Beam Shaping, Dynamic Lighting, Motorized Lighting etc. add flexibility to the lighting systems and highly add to the experience of the end-user. Façade lighting is another technology that is gaining momentum in the modern-day. With the use of façade lighting, it has become possible to accentuate architectural designs and draw focus to architectural details. It gives an artistic touch to buildings”, says Doshi. Notifying of the latest innovations in the lighting sector, Sharma says, “One of the latest innovations is the tunable white technology. Tunable white LED lighting fixtures and compatible lighting controls enable adjustment of colour temperature and intensity to create beautiful and dynamic spaces that adapt to your needs over the day. Even for a space without a window, tunable white lighting can mimic natural daylight with varying colour temperature and intensity throughout the day. Combining tunable white lighting
control with other functions like time scheduling, voice control or fine-tuning, homeowners now can always enjoy the best lighting environment to match their activities and moods without moving their fingers. This is especially beneficial to the busy and luxury-avid lifestyles of the urban mass after a long and hectic day”.
Bright years ahead Though incurs high initial installation costs, smart lighting controls ensure significant cost savings in the long run. Depending on the type of solution, an average payback period for intelligent lighting control installation is around 2-3 years. However, technological advancements and dropping prices of sensors, microcontroller units and other lighting components are expected to eventually reduce the payback time in the coming years. Besides, increasing fondness for energyefficient lighting solutions is expected to bring to the plate lucrative growth opportunities for the worldwide smart lighting controls market. Speaking on the future possibilities and scopes for the industry, Sharma says, “Soon, automatic shades will become more popular as more people would be keen to get complete control of daylight and hence get daylight and electric light controls integrated. The high penetration rate of mobile phones and acceptance of appbased solutions will also help the growth of lighting controls. Also, the ongoing trend of smart home and IoT is anticipated to aid the growth of lighting controls market, while establishing intelligent lighting and lighting controls as an integral part of a comfortable, intelligent, healthy and productive home”. The Future’s Here! In Conversation With Vishnu Reddy, CEO, Hogar Controls Inc.
Homes, as we know them today, will be a distant memory in just five years. Globally, smart homes are the norm. In India, we are just starting. Experts say that the growth of home automation in India will be an event to watch out for. Everyone predicts that this industry will see a hockey-stick growth.
Hello Mr. Reddy! Would you like to take us through the exhilarating journey of Hogar? We started with a single-minded focus to alter the automation landscape of the world. We have put together the best talent of creative engineers from the U.S.A. and India, which is why we have been a market leader with our smart home touch panel in such a short time. In the last four years, we have executed more than 5000 projects in India with unique smart home solutions. Currently, we are the only brand in India that offers a range of smart home solutions that adhere to Z-Wave, Zigbee, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity protocols. Our product portfolio is also entirely wireless.

You are one of the rare multinationals that have roots in India. You are right. We are Indian, but our ambitions are global. We are already in the U.S.A., Australia, NZ, Africa, U.A.E. & Middle East. We will be penetrating more international markets soon.
In India, what do you think are your pockets of growth? The world’s become flatter. There were days when new products would percolate down slowly, like in a funnel. That funnel has disappeared. If people in Mumbai know about something, we can be sure that the news has also travelled to Kanpur or Coimbatore. I don’t see pockets of growth. Growth will come in far and wide.
You seem to be quite persuasive about your prospects. Where do you think the growth will be explosive? We have divided the home automation market into two broad sections. The first section is the most obvious - a new home. If the homemakers want to go for automation, they can plan for it in advance. The second section is exciting - existing homes. Of course, the size of this market is enormous in comparison to new homes. Hence we came up with a retrofit, plugand-play solution that is simple, smart & secure. We’ve called this range “Hogar S.E.” Just because it is a retrofit solution doesn’t imply that the range is limited. We have an unparalleled range of security and safety products, including smart door locks, smart video doorbells, smart I.P. cameras. Our smart controller is aptly called Cerebro Mighty. It
connects up to 60 smart devices. And yet, surprisingly, the Hogar Smart Extension range can be installed, configured, and integrated within a matter of minutes.
It looks like you are an R&D-driven company. Research and Development are all there is. In India, we invested over Rs 100 Crore in an R&D facility. Our Innovation Centre is coming in a 1 lac sq ft facility at Hyderabad. Our tagline says Live The Future. To help people live the future, we need to invent the future continuously. So apart from being a tagline, that’s our raison d’être. It’s pressure, and we love it.
What about aesthetics? When I say R&D, I mean R&D in design too. However well thought out our final product is, if it’s not beautiful, there is no way it’s seeing the light of the day. Security, Simplicity, and Beauty – those are the three checkboxes that drive our design philosophy. 2 out of 3 is not good enough. We have to tick all three. Our products are a work of art, from the curvature of the bezels to the luminosity of the icons on our panels. We have to dot the i’s and dash the t’s.
How do you plan to get this message across to your potential customers? How do you see advertising? Automation is a product category that one needs to experience. Experience seeds desire. To provide these experiences, we are launching our experience centres in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Here, you will be able to experience our full range of automation products. We plan to take these Experience Centres across the top 20 towns very soon. NOVEMBER 2021

Apart from this, we are looking at impactful awareness campaigns. We have some exciting plans starting in December. We will have to find a balance between Share of Impact and Share of Spends. Whenever we spend, we will spend for impact.
We have seen quite a few players enter this market in the last year or so. Does that worry you? On the contrary, I believe competition is good. Especially in a nascent category, we are all like buddies pushing each other, expanding the space. The industry is too big for any of us. I believe if you are good, there will always be a business. Whether for us or others. Also, I am a firm believer that business is a marathon, not a sprint. It would be best if you had stamina, deep pockets, and, might I say, a tinge of madness to survive the gruelling times. The weak will wear

off. The strong will grit it out.
You have a fantastic tagline – Live The Future. So tell us, what’s the future? It’s exciting. Connected devices will change everything. How gently we wake up to how fast we sleep. When I say the future, I mean the next couple of years. No one can predict beyond that. Everything will be connected, not just devices. The devices are constantly learning about us, including what temperatures & humidity levels we are comfortable with. They won’t take long to figure out what wine I would like to order when it’s cold outside, and I am stressed inside. The devices will hear the chatter in the room and figure we have friends. They will automate the lights by themselves, play party music, and change the temperature to suit the number of people in the room. The future is so exciting that I rather create it than talk about it.

What role does system integrators play when it comes to designing a smart home? How important is their role?
me, the end-users are yet to feel comfortable having their HVAC and other appliances on automation.
A smart home is considered a primary service of the Internet of Things (IoT). Today, many leading global companies are launching smart home services/ products based on the IoT. Not a single vendor in IoT can offer a catch-all or an end-to-end solution, and frankly, you wouldn’t want them to. The actual value of IoT lies in its limitless possibilities. You should always select your “parts” to get the maximum benefits and customize them based on your needs and requirements. Historically, system integrators have been the only players to pull together a project with multiple parts and vendors. They have experience in putting together networking, IT or security projects, using equipment from different vendors.
What according to you are the major benefits of Smart & connected homes in the current “tech-savvy-era”?
Products of which category (lighting, security, entertainment etc.) witness maximum demand when it comes to integrating smart home devices with the interiors? Why?
In which sector(hospitality, commercial, residential), according to you, traditional devices and techniques are getting rapidly displaced to make room for smart devices and systems, aided with the latest technologies? And why?
It is difficult to answer this, as it is very consumer specific. Ideally, the lighting, AV and curtains make the combination, as it sets the right mood for the suitable event. Security is a crucial subject that can be addressed based on requirement level. If you ask 28

Your doorbell is tuned to recognize the face of your regular guests, while your refrigerator has pre-ordered milk for your breakfast before you realize it’s over. You walk into your room, and the brightness is adjusted automatically based on your liking, so you can control what goes on in the house even when you are in another country and have similar experiences.

their tech packages if not all. Moreover, technological advancements have proved that the possibilities of creating new systems are endless. For example, as COVID-19 hit the world, the need for “touchless” and hygienic surfaces has become a prerequisite for these sectors. Especially in the hospitality sector, systems that allow one to access their rooms with smartphones instead of keys, electrical appliances that shut down automatically once the guest leaves the room, saves time and reduces the energy consumption of a building. Similarly, functions ranging from changing the warmth of light with the touch of a button to having built-in cameras at their doorbells, offer comfort, security, and economic benefits, which homeowners look forward to. The commercial sector, too, is switching to smart technologies such as touchfree doors at airports or digital parking tickets, sent directly to smartphones. This makes it easier for the overall system to function smoothly and eliminate possible human errors.
Hence, people have found a way around it by using technologies that save their time! Transforming their traditional homes into smart homes by reducing oldschool methods, gives them more time to focus on other things and balance their work-life. In addition, smart homes are convenient, offer better control and management, while improving the quality of life.
How do you foresee the Smart home industry 5 years down the lane? The majority of the projects done by Open Atelier are Smart Homes. This makes me believe that more and more people are now opting for smart home solutions. The feedback of clients for smart homes is generally positive, as smart home solutions are quite user-centric. Five years down the lane, newer and better technologies will become an integral part of houses. Therefore, I think, even architects and interior designers should be well-equipped with these systems and seamlessly integrate them into their designs.
In what ways do you think the concept of smart homes has contributed to the lifestyles of working professionals? The world is moving ahead rapidly, leaving no time to waste, especially for the working professionals. NOVEMBER 2021

INTERVIEW
“Today, people mostly depend on their phones for work, entertainment and socializing. This culture has definitely eased their life in every home related aspect as well, because all smart home devices and systems can be controlled via various phone apps”says Baweja. Smart homes immensely decrease human drudgery while ensuring energy efficiency & self-sufficiency. There is an abrupt growth for smart home integrations due to the growing need for autonomy and to do away with the requirement of a human to physically keep a check on the house and its related systems. “Smart home integrations and applications offer us the liberty to control our home systems remotely”, says Ar. Varun Baweja, Founder and Interior Designer, Varun Baweja Designs. “The pandemic has kept us locked in our homes for a long time. Therefore, to enhance the comfort & convenience of the space, the concept of smart homes are being adopted by many”, adds Baweja.
Who(consumer groups) are opting for smart homes the most? Mostly, young working couples with or without young kids or elderly people, living alone for a major part of the day, opt for smart technologies to ensure their safety and security, while away from home for work.
What according to you are the must-have smart home products in today’s contemporary homes? I believe the must-have smart home products in today’s modern homes are smart security cameras & locks, smart windows, automated curtain control and lighting, smart thermostats, which come with integrated WiFi, allowing users to schedule, monitor and remotely control the features.
Products of which category (lighting, security, entertainment etc.) witness maximum demand when it comes to integrating smart home devices while doing the interiors? Why? Security and surveillance categories always remain in high demand. But, aesthetically smart lighting with a smart thermostat and smart entertainment units are relatively important.
In which sector (hospitality, commercial, residential), according to you, traditional devices and techniques are getting rapidly displaced to make room for smart devices and systems, aided with latest technologies? And why? Hospitality was the first to give up on traditional techniques and adopt smart locking and lighting systems as it decreased manual efforts and made the buildings energy-efficient, hence cost-efficient. For the very same reason, commercial and residential sectors are rapidly switching to smart solutions for the interiors.
Do you see any challenging factor (economic, social, environmental etc.) that has a strong potentiality to restrain the smart home industry? What, according to you, are the possible solutions? The biggest problem with automation is data privacy as every device is integrated online and leaves a digital footprint of our lives and daily activities which can become an easy and prone source for data hacking and other cyber-crimes.
How do you foresee the Smart home industry 5 years down the line? Eying the present growth rate, I would say that very soon smart homes will inevitably become an integral part of smart cities and more people will succumb to the ‘smart’ trend.

Keeping in mind the band restrictions in different geographies, Z-Wave offers distinct legally admissible frequencies to various regions. With a longer wavelength and lower frequency, Z-Wave can effortlessly penetrate objects and walls, while setting up a faster and dependable communication topology between the Z-Wave devices. Using a source-routed mesh network, which comprises one primary node, also known as hub and numerous secondary nodes, referred to as sensors, the technology operates in the sub-1GHz band. The Z-Wave networks identify primary controllers by network IDs and secondary nodes by Node IDs. The Network IDs are assigned to all configured devices by the primary controller. Therefore, all devices feature the same Network ID within a Z-Wave network. The mesh network topology allows the primary controller to send messages to the remotely located target Z-Wave device, by routing the signal through the interposed devices. Wall switches, alarm systems, lighting solutions, Z-Wave locks, roller shutters are among the Z-Wave products, widely available in the market. Primary Features • Using low transmission power, Z-Wave promises 3-5 years of battery life. •
Z-Wave provides a 100 kbps data rate along with high security through AES128 encryption.
• Z-Wave communication protocol will never interfere with Wi-Fi or any other signals within a house, as it works on a different frequency. •
Up to 232 configured devices can be controlled by a Z-Wave network.
• It is widely used in smart home security systems and enables the users to club applications like security, entertainment and lighting automation by offering the facility of interoperability among devices working on Z-Wave. • It is the second most popular communication protocol after ZigBee, which works at 2.4 GHz wireless frequency, whereas Z-Wave operates at 900 MHz. 34

Fazlur Rehman, Drasis Software Solutions Pvt Ltd. Z-Wave by itself is a revolutionary technology because it transformed the whole smart home industry landscape. Gone were the days when one had to build a home with special wiring and specialised switches to make it smart. “Z-Wave is completely wireless and retrofit, which means it effortlessly automates every home, whether old or now, without the need for civil work. This has widened the market for smart home installers, who now can automate a home within days, which previously took months. This is why Fibaro, which has been associated with Z-Wave for more than a decade, has a huge variety of devices including the most powerful processor in the smart home industry based on this technology. The significant benefit of the Fibaro smart home system is edge processing, so it does not depend on the internet for its intelligence, making the whole solution nimble and fast, in addition to other advantages like comfort, security and power savings. Furthermore, Fibaro provides open APIs that help installers to integrate it with hundreds of other smart home devices as well as add on Fibaro devices to update existing wired smart homes based on technologies like KNX. All these add immense value to the discerning end customer”, says Fazlur Rehman, Drasis Software Solutions Pvt Ltd.

Todd Residence is a 28,000 sq. ft. home in Gurgaon and was a high-end luxury project with more emphasis on lighting intent. The lighting concept was visualized in early 2015 and every space was detailed out with opulent furniture, materials, flooring, false ceiling concepts, and building services. The Scope of Work The scope of work was to devise overall lighting schemes for the interiors and the exterior facade of the project. And to create a design that weaves a lighting story in unison with the concept. The Todd residence stands four storeys tall, featuring a seemingly plain white facade with a powdercoated aluminum entertainment space cantilevered out of it. An interesting feature of the house is the front facade which comprises optical fibers integrated within the white wall. These optical fibers emulate twinkling lights, with different intensities, hereby achieving the look of converging with the sky. The lighting design has two presets. On the days of festivities, the house is lit with planter lights, optical fibers, illuminated art installations, otherwise

linear wall washers were installed to accentuate the metallic facade on daily light settings for a more muted look. All the lighting scenes were configured on a keypad and also controlled on smartphones through Bluetooth by either the house manager or clients themselves. A general approach was to use lighting scenes to create interesting visuals in the home. Accenting desired elements and playing with the source and type of light was an underlying principle in most lighting concepts. A mindful collaboration with the PMC, interior designers, and MEP consultants resulted in the successful execution of the Todd residence. It was built on the principle of zero maintenance and versatility in spaces. The light specifications were also of versatile nature which could adapt to the everchanging needs of the space and its functionality. The Client’s Vision The requirements were to have a daylightfilled house with breakaway spaces for warmth, minimalistic design language for modern and chic 42

living. Its design is inward-looking with innovative lighting concepts accenting every functional space through detailed planning through accent, task, and ambient light strategies. The client visualized versatility in spaces such that they transform with varying lighting settings. Automations Integrated All the LED downlights were of high CRI values with high lumen engines which made the space look visually sharper and vibrant in addition to all bespoke decorative ceiling installations for individual spaces. Tunable white LED strips and DMX controllers are installed in the ceiling to emulate daylight and also become warm white(2700K) with just a press on the keypad. To keep the source of light discreet and avoid direct light, recessed downlights are installed with mostly European brands which had an accessibility and service network in India for our esteemed clients. a very bespoke project for the client that involved numerous meetings with the integrators. Any guidance needed on the technicality of the backend system was easily achieved and all the hardware worked seamlessly once installed. Lighting design and automation were coordinated in the early stages; hence there were no issues once the client handover was done. Challenges Faced A pressing challenge was setting the tone for the grandeur and scale of the house. Modern contemporary houses have spaces that flow in synchrony, hence continuing a lighting concept from one space to the other was challenging to align the lighting requirements of different spaces. An appropriate plan was reached in support of the technical specifications. The advanced technology guided the plan through various spatial conflicts. Eventual Outcomes Visual experiences in high-end residences are 44

elevated by amalgamating lighting automation with various scenes for functional lighting. Artwork accentuation and clean-up preset for the housekeeping team should be integrated for a seamless and modern experience. Decorative and good-quality LED fixtures are imperative for good lighting ambiances. One must not take shortcuts as quality for a complete spatial story is dependent on good lighting intent and good products. Client’s Feedback The clients, including the architects, and interior designers were ecstatic at the project handover as it turned out to be an exceptional project for everyone. It was an award-winning project and compliments to the complete team on this great project showcase. Final Takeaway Residential projects are the most complicated with respect to lighting design. The overall planning is dependent on appropriate detailing and execution, in coordination with third parties. One should aim to make the design documentation simple and executable by the site team which was done successfully by our office. The fine-tuning of processes during the execution helps the project delivery to be seamless

NCR New Delhi-Based Hospitality Institute Aided By Avant-Garde Technology Design & Execution by : Sonali Rastogi, Founding Partner of Morphogenesis
Located in Faridabad in the suburbs of the National Capital Region (NCR) of New Delhi, the Lalit Suri Hospitality School is a cuttingedge hospitality institute. The project is a manifestation of the ethos of our client’s company and symbolizes the tradition and future of the country’s hospitality trade. The design challenge was to impart education in the service of luxury hospitality and set it within a modest institutional framework. The scope of work included master planning, architecture, and interior design.
46
I SMARTHOME WORLD I NOVEMBER 2021
The Scope of Work On the site’s northern edge, exists a large cluster of Neem trees with thick foliage. The concept idea was to protect the beautiful Neem tree clusters and integrate them within the overall design. The built form actively engages and intertwines with the tree clusters by moving back and forth as required. The landscape and the building levels respect the natural slope of the site. The height of the building is consistently low, allowing it to have a pedestrianfriendly human scale, expressing a seamless integration of the ‘green’ and the ‘built’.
CASE STUDY
Morphogenesis’ design approach addressed the institute’s vision of hospitality skill development, operational exposure, and managerial competence. The strategic outlook ensured that each space has a duality of purpose - firstly its educational avatar and the other, a setting conducive to the experience of luxury hospitality. This flexibility in space function is reflected across the entire project. Cafeterias were converted to F&B outlets, where the students eat as well as learn service. The kitchens were designed to enable students to cook as well as practice their service skills. The entire hostel accommodation is built in a hotel format, where even public gathering spaces are designed to be serviced like congregational spaces within hotels.
Project Features This project plays with different forms and levels of fenestrations, revealing interesting gaps and thus reinventing the tradition of the “Jaali” and “Jharoka” (a type of overhanging enclosed balcony). Building for climate change has always been an important consideration within Morphogenesis’ design methodology. Solar radiation and airflow movement was analyzed, in order to develop a cavity wall that would serve as a façade system. The arrangement of bricks was simulated using software (Ladybug and Honeybee, among others) to help in the reduction of solar heat gain through the façade. Moreover, undulations in the facade enable the wall to shade itself, while the overhangs prevent direct sunlight from entering the workspace, thus further reducing heat gain. Lastly, such facades also lend texture, along with a distinctive character, to the building design.
Challenges Faced & Final Takeaway Education in India typically takes a socialist approach, which means it needs to be made available to all. Thus, available resources need to be stringently managed to make this approach monetarily viable. Keeping such constraints in mind, listed below are a few learnings and achievements: • Embeddedness: Materiality and affordability were addressed by selecting exposed brickwork as the singular material for the entire project. Bricks are cost-sensitive and also give a sense of permanence to the structure. Moreover, they require low maintenance and provide psychological comfort along with a sense of security. Brick as a material was also easily accessible from within the 500 km radius of the project site because the soil in the area has high clay content. •
Wellness and Biophilia: The existing Neem trees cool the air through ‘transpiration cooling,’ and help in microclimate creation. Furthermore, extending the forest indoors also helps in enhancing the productivity of students.
•
Winds: The Northwest summer winds are harnessed and redirected over the water bodies that help in dropping the outdoor temperature. Whereas harnessing the NE & SE monsoon winds help reduce humidity levels during high humid months.
• Resilience: In keeping with our environmentally conscious approach, we introduced collection wells and bioswales on site. Therefore, the institute turns netzero on the water during the monsoon season, i.e., June to September.

Panasonic Introduces World’s First Near Field Communication Technology Using Wavelet OFDM
Panasonic Corporation has announced that it has developed a secure near field communication technology termed as “PaWalet Link”) using a loop antenna by applying Wavelet OFDM*2 to a communication method using a magnetic field. With “PaWalet Link” it is possible to limit the communication range from a few millimetres to tens of centimetres. This technology can control the communication range by controlling the size of the loop antenna and the transmission power of the communication device. The frequency can be limited by selecting the mode/ channel. In the communication environment of the IoT/ DX / GX era, wireless technology will be used in the future, and the number of connected terminals is expected to increase. As a result, interference among devices is regarded as a problem, and communication methods that can reduce interference are desired. With the newly developed technology, the range of communication can be easily controlled by applying a loop antenna to wavelet OFDM and communicating
with a magnetic field. The wavelet OFDM has functions necessary for robust communication such as error correction, diversity mode, transmission line estimation technology, and encryption, and also includes interference avoidance function by carrier sense using CSMA / CA*3. PaWalet Link also has multiple modes and channels, allowing multiple channels to be formed to avoid interference, such as a wireless LAN. It is ideal in environments where the distance from neighbouring devices is extremely close and you do not want to interfere with each other. A specific image of utilization is charging to a mobile using wireless power transmission. During the charging process, PaWalet Link is used to automatically connect the mobile to the network when the mobile stops in the parking space. By applying The Pawlet Link, which has these characteristics, Panasonic provides solutions that can respond immediately to the needs of the IoT/ DX / GX era, such as IP networking, high speed, and security.
