Audio Distribution:

• The audio distribution comprises customized media servers for each of the 9 zones in the clubhouse as well as 9 zones in the residence lobbies. Each server is programmed per the energy zone it is situated in and includes custom playlists that vary per the time of day to offer distinct ambiences.

• As guests transition from one area to another within the clubhouse, consistency in the audio intensity is programmed to ensure a seamless transition from zone to zone.

• Line array solutions elevate the audio performance in the bar area and ballroom.

Video Distribution:

55 display screens and TVs and 16 video sources are included across the site. Crestron NVX VoIP was used to ensure image quality, latency and security and deliver real-time images at a quality that is indistinguishable from the source.

Integration Control

• The integration control solution is a true intangible – discrete and indispensable. It is the backbone of the entire project and the single point of operation for all programmed macros – automatic or manual.

• The power and versatility of Crestron processors were used to integrate various subsystems across the site.

• A customized user-friendly GUI was programmed by our team to cater to the needs of the client of having all automated solutions controllable from a single device, and operable from any location.

• The user interface is made up of 200 custom pages to account for all possible permutations and combinations in this colossal project.

• To avail any solution, the user starts off by making a selection of which floor of the clubhouse needs to be operated (upper or lower), followed by the concerned zone/area, and lastly, the required feature to be operated.

• PIR sensors provide automated actions such as “occupancy room off”, triggered by the lack of movement for a prolonged time in the common bathroom areas.

• Additionally, the owners of the 429 ultra-luxury residence living units were offered with the freedom to select their personalized integration backend platform for all controls, to ensure a seamless transition in their new home.

18 I SMARTHOME WORLD I OCTOBER 2022 COVER STORY
Technical expertise provided by team MACBEE (India):

Networking:

The project employs speed fusion technology by Peplink to deliver superior and unbreakable connectivity throughout the site including the clubhouse, the outdoor regions and the residence tower lobbies. This technology offers bandwidth bonding and WAN smoothing for uninterrupted internet connectivity and VoIP.

Intercom:

High call volume users require access to clear and efficient way to easily route and control calls. Hence, the intercom system has been designed using VoIP.

Satellite TV:

The satellite TV system uses a settop box by Tata Sky, the country’s premier DTH service provider.

Lighting Design:

• The team had a unique opportunity to create lighting concepts to reflect the five main energy zones of the clubhouse. While entering any energy zone, room lighting is one of the first elements of the experience to appeal to the guest.

• The project includes over 1,000 circuits and over 2,000 lighting fixtures, with a mix of direct lighting, indirect lighting, designer chandeliers, and more.

• Uncountable hours were dedicated to the testing of the lighting circuits for perfect ramping and anti-flicker with the output modules to ensure smooth operability.

• A majority of the lights are on a dimming protocol.

• Specially designed underwater RGB fiber optics are placed in the outdoor water area for buoyancy and radiance.

• Underwater lighting in the outdoor pool provides energetic dynamics.

• Lighting to accentuate the landscaping on the balconies, roof, and outdoor walkways of the clubhouse bring alive these often overlooked areas.

• Intense and indirect lighting highlights every passage and walkway throughout the clubhouse.

• DMX RGB lighting brings alive karaoke nights by submerging the guests in an immersive audio and video experience.

• Coffer ceiling DMX RGB lighting in the bowling alleys offer the guests an electrifying and invigorating experience.

Lighting Control:

• Crestron provides the main control both behind the scenes and discreetly within the rooms with in-wall Crestron panels, programmed with custom GUI on each tablet.

• The lighting controls are a mix of DALI (majority), PhaseCut, 0-10 Volt dimming protocols and on/ off modules.

Shade Design and Control:

The curtains and blinds are timed to open and close based on an astronomical clock, which efficiently considers the movement of the sun per day as well as per season. Creston has been used as the backend for the shade control modules that can be controlled from the preprogrammed tablet. Additionally, area-wise keypads are installed in the server room to allow for manual control.

HVAC Control:

The HVAC control via Backnet is timed as well as temperature controlled. Temperature settings vary automatically based on the temperature of the day and can also be overridden individually as per the requirement of the clubhouse guests.

Pool, Spa and Gym

• The pool area is temperature controlled to ensure adequate heating or cooling.

OCTOBER 2022 I SMARTHOME WORLD I 19
COVER STORY

• Each area of the spa has its own music based on the therapy of the room with individual volume control and playlist control customizable based on guest requirements.

• The gym includes a customized video wall with 8 screens to make a landscape scenario in front of the exercise cycles with natural scenes to offer the feeling of being in the midst of nature.

Automated Settings

Lighting Control:

The lights across the site (indoor and outdoor) are timed. Different scenarios are set for daytime lighting as well as evening lighting.

The morning scenario starts at sunset to gradually fade the lights and open the curtains.

The evening scenario responds to the sunset when curtains close and ambient lighting starts.

Curtain control:

All curtains and blinds are timed to include light streaming, light filtering, or light restriction.

Audio control:

The audio in the clubhouse is programmed specifically per the requirements of the individual area/room to be in sync with the

designated energy zone. All playlists are pre-programmed, but can also be manually selected.

Temperature control:

The temperature control in the clubhouse is programmed specifically based on the season of the year as well as per the requirements of the individual area/room to be in sync with the designated energy zone.

Automated events with human intervention:

Video Distribution:

The video distribution has been programmed using macros to offer ease of use as well as customizability for clubhouse guests. Content/ channels to be viewed are to be dropped (“pushed”) onto the indicated screen /TV as selected on the tablet.

Pool Temperature Control:

The temperature of the outdoor and indoor pool areas have been placed on macros to allow for customization based on the requirements of the clubhouse guests at such times.

Lighting override:

Macros have been programmed for lighting override where necessary based on the requirements of a specific event in the clubhouse.

On a parting note Sawan Nichani, concludes that saying, “The project uses Siemens for monitoring and management. Industry standards were considered by our team at each step of the project – from inception to customization and installation to integration. Through meticulous analysis, planning, blueprinting, and detailing in over 700 pages of documentation, the team has ensured compliance with international standards for both safety as well as efficient and seamless functionality. The project is future-ready in all respects. However, provisions have been included for possibilities of future scaling.”

Creating Cinematic Experience At Home

Laser light source in projectors to OLED that offer increasing resolution with decreasing pixel/pitch sizes. Read on to know more about Home Theatre Projectors.

Most of us would have a vivid memory of seeing projectors in our schools/college auditoriums or conference rooms. Once regarded as bulky and inconvenient devices, Home Theatre Projectors have transformed themselves into sleek and compact devices that are very much in demand for home theatres and conference rooms.

There are several factors for the popularity of Home Theatre projectors, foremost among them is the improvement in technology and lower prices, more and more people are now investing in projectors for personal use. Another important factor is that projectors today are lightweight and portable with high resolutions, and produce colour accurate images that recreate an experience of a theatre in your personal space.

There are many different types of projectors available in the market including LED Projector, Full HD, LED, 3D, Mini and many more. But for the readers Smart Home World has broadly classified them into three types based on their display property:

• Cathode Ray Tube (CRT)

• Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

• Digital Light Processing (DLP)

Cathode Ray Tube (CRT)

A CRT projector is basically a video-projecting device. It uses a tiny cathode ray tube that has high brightness for image generation. A lens is kept in front of the CRT face which focuses the image

and enlarges it onto a big projection screen. A CRT projector focuses on the image or video with its lens to project it onto the screen. These images are processed with help of three separate coloured (red, green, and blue) CRT tubes.

CRT projectors are not portable as they are huge in size and heavy in weight. Their electricity consumption is also high because of the three light guns. In the initial stage, it may be difficult and tricky to set up a CRT projector, but the user’s feedback is that CRT projectors have brilliant and outstanding picture quality.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

A Liquid Crystal Display uses liquid crystal to project an image or object. This type of projector is generally used in computers, Laptops, TVs, portable video games, and cell phones. Displays in LCD technology are much thinner as compared to CRT technology.

Digital Light Processing (DLP)

DLP comes in two noteworthy structures i.e. 1 chip DLP and 3-chip DLP. Digital Light Processing makes use of micro mirrors called Digital Micromirrors. This device reflects light and shading onto a screen. These micro-mirrors are situated in a semiconductor chip and are little.

Essential Features to look for in Projectors:

Technologically upgraded features like the revolutionary 4K projector technology, futuristic sound, plug-and-play ease, and compatibility are some of the most common features of new-age projectors.

Home Theater Projectors: A typical home theater video projector should have a brightness of 2,000 lumens and offer at least the 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio for PC widescreen. It can also provide aspect ratios for NTSC (1.33:1), HDTV (1.78:1), Cinema (2.35:1), Video (4:3), Square (1:1), and Letterbox (1.85:1). The different aspect ratios cover the different screens you might need and the different video types your projector is capable of projecting.

It should also have a complete variety of video ports such as HDMI, VGA (D-Sub 15), DVI, Composite Video (RCA), S-Video, Component Video (YPbPr), LAN, USB-A, USB-B, Audio In (3.5mm) for projectors with audio included, and 5BNC. It’s mostly used for projecting HD television and playing movies in your own mini-theater at home. It can also be used for Internet streaming and video games.

Overall Experience and Takeaways

Architect Shital Sakhala believes that the sooner we integrate and adapt to technology the better our lives will be, and the more efficient our time management will be. “It is helpful to plan for comfortable living in years to come. All family members are very satisfied with the technology that has been integrated into the residence and this in turn has made life much easier for them.”

Advice to Budding Professionals

I feel it is important to integrate smart systems into built forms like offices, malls, hotels, stores or residences. Smart Automation should be planned to keep the project, budget and users’ requirements. The builder/architect should meet with the clients to understand their requirements. Subsequently, after the Smart Automation system is planned, they should meet the client to explain the same to them. The systems should be userfriendly keeping in mind that people of different generations and mindsets will be using them. The selection of products should be undertaken at the very initial stage of the planning to avoid any conflicts during the project. The products should be smart in appearance and complement the overall interior design/décor. There are various options that are durable, easy to use, and readily available in the market.

The architect in his message says, “It is just a matter of making the right choice when it comes to smart home automation.”

LIFI is the New Technology

About 80% of all mobile traffic originates and terminates indoors. This trend is exacerbated by smart home environments. Intelligent machines and sensors as well as new human-centric applications will contribute to a surge in wireless data traffic in indoor environments. It is predicted that mobile data traffic will increase between 20 - 100 times in the next 10 years. The Radio Frequency (RF) spectrum, which traditionally has been used for wireless data transmission is scarce, limited and therefore, expensive, and it may not be sufficient to support the digital nervous system that future smart homes need. The problem worsens in future cellular generations as new RF spectrum realistically is only found in the high RF spectrum bands ranging between 24 GHz and 200 GHz. In these frequency bands, the signal losses incurred by well-insulated buildings become severe. At 39 GHz, the loss is about 240 higher than at 800 MHz according to a report by Ericsson. It will, therefore, be increasingly difficult to use cellular technology indoors, and currently, indoor environments heavily rely on Wi-Fi. However, no new RF spectrum for Wi-Fi is expected to be made available in the near future. Therefore, we are facing a real issue in providing sufficient wireless connectivity indoors.

However, all buildings are equipped with lighting –mostly Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting. Like the RF spectrum, light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Light waves are very high-frequency electromagnetic waves whose wavelengths are in the nano meter region. The infrared and visible light spectrum together are 2600 larger than the entire RF spectrum of 300 GHz. The light spectrum is unregulated and free to use anywhere on the planet. Light has generated life on the planet and, therefore, is inherently safe. Indoor wireless networking with light is provided by relatively new technology – LiFi. LiFi can be integrated into indoor ordinary LED or laser light bulbs and, hence, it is possible to combine illumination and high-speed wireless communications using the same device. In a recent demonstration at CES 2022 in Las Vegas, Kyocera SLD Laser in collaboration with the LiFi Research and Development Centre (LRDC) at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow have demonstrated for the first time 105 Gbps using a single light source that emitted visible light and infrared light. Ten such light sources in a room would be able to deliver 1 Tbps. This is 1000 times faster than current WiFi.

38 I SMARTHOME WORLD I OCTOBER 2022
Professor Harald Haas, Director of the LiFi Research and Development Centre at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow writes about the new LiFi Networking technology and explains its application and advantages.

LiFi could also be a standalone network with separate access points which is a solution when using the infrared spectrum only. LiFi is designed to support user mobility, handover, bidirectional communication, i.e., it exhibits the same functionalities that are prevalent in Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11) as well as cellular (3GPP).

However, in addition, it provides unique features such as:

• Enhanced physical layer security and privacy because light does not propagate through opaque materials such as walls.

• Extreme cell densification (a communication cell in LiFi is equivalent to the area that is covered by a light cone) due to the spatial containment of light which leads to significantly reduced interference and data densities north of one giga bit per second per square meter (Gbps/m2). This means that every square meter in a building could have the equivalent data link performance as provided by a 5G base station.

• Extremely high data rates up to 1 Tbps while maintaining high-energy efficiency.

• Very high energy efficiency due to joint energy harvesting (from ambient light) and data reception when using photovoltaic cells as data receivers.

In this context, it is also important to highlight that LiFi does not necessarily require a direct line-ofsight connection. Having said this, in a typical indoor environment with multiple light sources in a room, the likelihood that ALL connections are blocked at the same time is extremely small. Furthermore, ambient light, such as strong sunlight, does not greatly affect the data rate performance due to the use of advanced digital data encoding techniques.

LiFi is fundamentally different to former standards such as Infrared Data Association (IrDA), or indeed intentional optical wireless communication such as TV remote controls. The LiFi market is forecast to be around $8bn by 2030 as per Global Market Insights(https://www.gminsights.com/industryanalysis/lifi-market).

LiFi has been pioneered by pureLiFi Ltd during the past 10 years. This work has led to a global IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) standard. Perhaps the most famous IEEE standard is the hugely successful WiFi standard. Within the same IEEE family, namely 802.11 there will be a LiFi standard with the reference ‘bb’, so 802.11bb. The fully ratified standard will be available in the first half of 2023. Standardisation is hugely important in the telecommunication as well as the lighting sectors in order to ensure interoperability.

OCTOBER 2022 I SMARTHOME WORLD I 39 GUEST ARTICLE

The possible applications for LiFi are huge. For example, to provide a good user experience when using virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (VR) glasses data rates in the region of 10 Gbps are required. This is because the high resolution and a large field of view are closely tied to excellent user experience. There is no current indoor wireless technology that could provide this capability. Furthermore, ordinary solar cells can act as data detectors while they provide energy by harvesting data-carrying light and ambient light. This means future LiFi devices such as sensors could run without the need to regularly charge or replace a battery. Other applications indoor include the provision of secure connectivity to smart robots such as vacuum cleaners. The benefit of LiFi is that the signals cannot easily be detected outside, or indeed in neighbouring apartments. This means malicious eavesdropping and intrusion would not be possible. For example, there have been multiple reported instances of man-in-the-middle attacks where people broke into home WiFi networks because RF signals leak through walls. This risk will be substantially reduced with LiFi.

One of Tesla’s famous quotes is: “When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain….”. LiFi is a technology that will help to perfectly apply wireless technology in an affordable, energy-efficient, and reliable manner. It will help build the digital nervous system in our homes and offices that ultimately will be needed to make our homes more energy efficient and smart.

Dynamics of SMART LIGHTING

Praveen Thampi, Creative Director, The Ministry of Light highlights the need for True Sky Circadian Lighting System and future trends and innovations in the lighting industry.

INTERVIEW OCTOBER 2022 I SMARTHOME WORLD I 41

What are the advantages of using smart lighting in homes?

One of the most common forms of smart lighting for homes is dimming. This allows users to adjust the brightness of the lighting to suit different occasions or set the required mood. These scenes can be anything the user wants them to be, from a specific kind of scenario during any festivity or celebration to creating a right ambience for a party. With a smart lighting system, a user can easily program and recall different scenes depending on the activity that will take place in a certain area.

Home environments with smart lighting have been shown to boost residents’ well-being. Having abundant natural light is ideal for a comfortable home. However, getting adequate sunlight isn’t always practically achievable in major metros cluttered with buildings. That’s why it’s helpful to have an artificial lighting system in home that provide illumination to Replicate the Natural Sunlight. To put it another way, this aids in maintaining our internal clocks in sync with the sunlight and helps properly regulate various Human hormonal secretions.

How does smart lighting play an important role in our workplaces?

In today’s world, people spend a lot of time under white light during the day and at night. Inside office buildings, so commercial spaces must have smart lighting. People are not exposed to natural light in an office setting. They are always exposed to a fixed colour temperature light,

but the wavelength and colour temperature of natural sunlight changes every minute of the day, which the human brain keeps track of. As a result, our bodies are unable to keep track of these variations in light and are unable to respond appropriately.

This is especially important for employees working the night shift. Because we are Diurnal beings and life on earth is designed so that we wake up when the sun is up and go to sleep when the sun is down. Night shift employees face a problem that we call de-synchronisation of the biological clock/circadian rhythm.

Long-term effects of sitting under a fixed colour temperature include lifestyle disorders such as high blood pressure, diabetes, lower concentration, etc. Smart lighting in an office helps facilitate natural sunlight in the office space. It ensures that the circadian cycle works correctly and that the people working in that space have no adverse effects.

For example, in Northern Europe & Scandinavian countries, many people suffer from SADS - Seasonally affective disorders. Circadian lighting in such areas helps trick the brain and fast-tracks it by twelve hours and makes the brain feel like it is daytime. This helps them work as efficiently as possible without worrying about any disorders.

How does smart lighting affect the aesthetics of a space?

When it comes to smart lighting and aesthetics, we do not compromise in any way. One of the practices prevalent

Lounge at Bangalore International Airport

Google Bangalore Office at RMZ Infinity.

in the market is where some integrators/designers go for some gimmicks in terms of smart lighting. When it comes to Circadian/Tuneable white Lighting, the type of luminaries we use in terms of ‘Look & Feel‘ do not change, but we only change the type of LEDs and Control system used inside them.

Rather than maintaining a constant colour temperature, we use two sets of LEDs to adjust the colour temperature and Intensity based on colour temperatures emitted by the natural sunlight which is in sync with the Human circadian rhythm and user preferences. In terms of aesthetics, a tunable white lighting system will enhance the room better, as some colours are more enhanced at certain colour temperatures than others. Similarly, specific colours are disguised by using different colour temperatures. So overall, the space transforms drastically as the day goes by. Certain colours not visible in the morning are better enhanced in the evening because of the ever-changing colour temperature.

What is the True Sky Circadian Lighting System?

The True Sky Circadian Lighting System is where you have a suspended, sleek Dual optics Luminaire, where the upward component throws light into the ceiling and is tunable between 2000K and 8000K. The light coming from the downward component is varying only between 3500K-5500K, which simulates the natural daylight. This two-way lighting system is a perfect replication of the natural sky & daylight.

OCTOBER 2022 I SMARTHOME WORLD I 43
INTERVIEW

The colour temperature of the upward component of the suspended luminaire changes from blue to orange as the day progresses. This approach is based on how the sky changes colour while the sunlight we perceive remains constant between 3500K-5000K. We recently implemented this system at one of the Google Campuses in Bengaluru.

How vital is working with a system integrator on a lighting project?

At The Ministry of Light, we design the entire lighting system including the Lighting Management system completely In-house. The reason why we do this is that we are a bunch of tech-savvy people. Apart from lighting, we do a lot of lighting automation, and I myself am a technology consultant for a couple of large lighting automation companies.

I try to stay on the cutting edge of technology and use that in my projects, so I don’t usually need a system integrator. A system integrator might come into the picture if the client tries to integrate the lighting management system with other automation systems. Still, system integrators don’t come into play much from a smart lighting installation perspective.

System integrators do quite a good job of integrating a home automation system. But when it comes to commercial spaces, the role of an integrator only comes into play if there is a sophisticated conferencing system or an AV system that needs to be integrated with the lighting management system.

In my experience, there are some lighting designers who only focus on the Architectural/Interior design aspect of lighting, so in such cases, the system integrator plays a larger role in plugging the gap between the lighting designer and the electrical consultant.

What are the primary factors that you consider while ideating a design pattern?

Or what all needs to be kept in mind while ideating a design theme or pattern for a particular area?

We first begin by understanding the functionality of the space and the client’s requirements based on which we make a reference to what kind of project we are working on. So we prepare a questionnaire and propose a design basis report to the client. This report is based on the latest technologies and standards available in the market along with a budgetary cost. This slab-based report is then used to make recommendations to the client to fit their requirements. At this stage, we also make a note of what will be the usage of the space as well as at what time the systems will be used the most. So here we gather a lot of pertinent information that becomes the basis for all the design and technology decisions.

Next, we decide on the standards and technologies that will be implemented in the project. This includes whether we are going for motorised blinds, a full-fledged Lighting Management System or Human-Centric lighting/Circadian Lighting, a standard On/Off-sensorbased system, or a Standalone DALI Smart Lighting Management System with HCL or BMS integration. So we need to consider almost 15 different parameters here, and these parameters evolve and change on every project.

Next, we consider the architect’s design and understand the look and feel of the space. Here, we suggest to our clients how to modify or tweak the system to fit with the design principles. By this phase, the overall look and feel of the project and the detailed design charts are now complete and ready for the client’s approval.

Finally, we process the BOQ with specifications and prepare the tender. Upon the client’s approval,

44 I SMARTHOME WORLD I OCTOBER 2022

INTERVIEW

we proceed with bringing in the suppliers and contractors on board and as part of this process, we prepare a “Techno-Commercial Comparative”, based on which the client places purchase orders and On-boards the Suppliers/Contractors.

How do you provide the after-sales service for Lighting Management Systems?

The lighting management systems available today are mostly cloud-based. These systems are quite flexible, and almost all of the after-sales services can be done over the internet. Once a project is done, we give the client a “Lighting Control System Logic Document” that shows them how to use the system in each room and its different functionalities and scenes. It helps the user understand the whole system and navigate through it.

If the user cannot solve a certain problem and needs any re-programming, the lighting management system supplier who installed the system can do the re-programming remotely through the Cloud or send a local representative to the site.

What is the biggest innovation in the lighting sector?

It was the advent of LEDs that changed the lighting industry. Before that, there were only the basic Edison Bulb and halogen bulbs, which had been around for over 100 years, with few advancements like fluorescent lamps, high intensity, discharge lamps, metal halides, electro-magnetic lamps etc. Post-2005, a lot of advances have been made in the lighting sector with LEDs taking over the entire lighting industry. Though the principles of lighting

controls have remained almost the same since their inception, they have now become smarter, more flexible and versatile and can do a lot more than just controlling lights.

They are able to process a lot of data and provide users with more accurate information. These controllers are much more capable than their predecessors in handling inputs from multiple sensors, processing outputs to multiple Luminaires & feed that data very efficiently to the Building Management system simultaneously. This in conjunction with IoT systems can be used to fine-tune HAVC Systems and several other services in a large commercial project, reaching their optimal levels of performance.

Smart Lighting protocols have evolved to make things easier, such as the Dali 2.0. So in terms of lighting itself, there have been a lot of changes and innovations, but lighting controls and smart lighting have evolved over a period of time rather than having drastically changed or innovated. There have been many innovative platforms that have been developed, which were revolutionary, but unfortunately, none became popular due to various reasons.

How do you foresee the future of the smart lighting industry?

New technologies are coming in daily, such as the Wireless Dali system, which is set to launch in less than six months which will be a game changer. In the next couple of years, there will be a major transition to wireless technology.

Standardization in terms of Protocols in the Industry in terms of Smart home products with Matter and Commercial segment products with Dali-2 Standards, will be a game changer in the industry.

OCTOBER 2022 I SMARTHOME WORLD I 47 INTERVIEW

Invisible, Quality Speakers With Superior Technology

Speaking to Smart Home World, Guy Traviss, Co-Founder, Osiviso discussed the development of Vibrational Panel Technology (VPT) and its use in cutting-edge audio systems, specifically in the form of a virtually undetectable speaker.

48 I SMARTHOME WORLD I OCTOBER 2022 INTERVIEW

Tell us about invisible speakers?

Invisible loudspeakers offer the widest options in design and acoustic flexibility. These loudspeakers provide the added advantage of seamlessly merging into the interior spaces without compromising on the acoustic quality. Another important feature is the flexibility it offers, by removing the need to conform to the lighting-grid design, ventilation or other fixed design cues. Invisible speakers can be installed where other loudspeakers cannot be installed. These speakers can be covered with a thin layer of plaster or similar covering material, so that the speakers are concealed and are not visible.

Working on the principles of micro-surface vibrations to generate sound, a wide and immersive listening experience is provided to the listener. This `wash’ of sound makes invisible speakers perfect for transitory spaces where the listener is constantly moving through the space, without deterioration in the sound quality. For defined listening zones such as surround sound systems, the wide sound field offers an immersive listening experience while an incredible surround effect is created without visually intrusive speakers around the room.

Being an expert in this field can you explain the concept of Distributed Mode Loudspeakers (DML)

Distributed Mode Loudspeakers (DML) generates sound through the principle of micro-vibrations on a panel, rather than the traditional dynamic ‘cone’ style loudspeaker that we are all familiar with. Small amounts of vibrational energy is imparted on a thin panel, which mechanically amplifies the sound and radiates it out into the room. On the most basic level, imagine knocking on a table, a book, a window, or a door. We instinctively know that all of these examples will sound very different, yet the variation in sound comes from the vibrations existing in different surfaces. By understanding how these materials naturally behave, we can tailor the properties to create an engaging listening experience.

In order to achieve efficient sound output from a DML loudspeaker, a lightweight and carefully engineered composite panel material is used as a soundboard, similar to the natural-wood panels found on acoustic instruments such as classical guitars and violins. Complex internal resonances,

reflections and vibrations are generated with an electro-dynamic exciter, which is tuned and tamed in order to create a cohesive sound output that we are able to enjoy as listeners.

Engineered composite panels are used to provide a consistency of mechanical properties that are required for use in the construction environment as well as repeatable acoustic performance. By combining expertise in the acoustic principles of flat-panel loudspeakers and a deep understanding of the constraints of the construction industry, we are able to craft loudspeakers that not only last for years of continual use but also provide entertaining and engaging musical and audio experiences for listener.

Where can invisible speakers be used?

All our engineers understand the importance of the final result, and design loudspeakers that specifically match the performance requirements of specific areas. With the design flexibility and immersive sound quality of invisible loudspeakers, a wide range of system options are available to the customer and designer. As music is becoming increasingly accessible through advancements in streaming services and increased data bandwidth, we now live in an age where there are high expectations for great sound quality. We all have the ability to hone our own personal taste in music and movies, making true emotional connections with the artists and media that we love.

Whole-home audio offers the ability to use music to create a stimulating atmosphere, drama and entertainment for our customers. Invisible loudspeakers become the perfect partner for this type of media-rich living experience. Whether it is gentle background music during a dinner with friends, preparing a meal with family, enjoying your favourite movie, focussing on study and work, or party with loud music, by placing invisible loudspeakers and hidden subwoofers around our homes, we are able to provide a wide range of content to accurately represent the mood and emotion that we are feeling at any one moment. By using hidden technology, we can finally experience true design freedom with background music or surround sound throughout our homes without being visible.

How do concealed subwoofers function and how are they different from standard subwoofers?

Good bass performance is not only important for movies, but it also carries a vast amount of rhythm, texture and energy in most genres of music. Reproducing this frequency spectrum is not a trivial feat, often requiring large speakers to create good bass. It is not often practical to use large-format loudspeakers throughout your home. With heating, ventilation and air conditioning, fire detection and suppression, security, plumbing, lighting and many other electrical and mechanical services all

OCTOBER 2022 I SMARTHOME WORLD I 49 INTERVIEW

competing for precious ceiling space, the smaller and lighter loudspeaker are preferable.

Traditional subwoofers are often large substantial boxes that take up valuable floor space in our living environments, as well as require power cabling and specialist wiring. Concealed and hidden subwoofers are therefore the perfect partner to invisible loudspeakers, allowing us to effortlessly deliver truly powerful emotional performance without the requirement for each speaker itself to be large, weighty or unsuitable for general construction constraints.

By separating out the bass component of the sound to a dedicated hidden subwoofer, we are able to create a perfect balance of sound in a way that is far more suitable for the range of sound we desire. With the acoustic principles of bass meaning, it behaves differently to higher frequencies, we are able to use fewer subwoofers than speakers, strategically positioned to create truly engaging sound. Further to that, bass energy can effortlessly travel around objects within a room, without suffering from acoustic shadowing (imagine someone talking with their back towards you; you can easily hear the bass in their voice, but the detail and clarity are less intelligible), we can place subwoofers out of line-ofsight. Through the use of discreet ported-subwoofer designs where the physical mass of the subwoofer is hidden within the wall or ceiling, we are able to create vast amounts of high-performance bass from very small openings in your room. These can further be concealed by positioning them behind furniture or tucked away in corners out of sight. Carefully configured driver arrays and airflow control allow us to create impressive bass with the performance of a traditional subwoofer, from a unit that is seamlessly hidden out of sight. By developing hidden subwoofers to work in harmony with our invisible loudspeakers, we can offer the listener a truly impressive full-range acoustic performance, delivering the power and emotion behind the music and movies that they love.

bass meaning, it behaves differently

What was your vision behind designing the Mia keypad?

The Mia keypad form takes its cue from ergonomic design; this has given it the distinctive ‘diamond’ button layout. The hope is that the Mia brand becomes synonymous with this keypad - as products such as the iPhone have become celebrated as icons of industrial design for apple.

What global opportunity do you see in Mia?

The world is primed for a disruptor such as Mia. Whereas those working in the professional B2B Smart Home sector have innovated and created a niche market, no one company has bridged the gap to mass premium as of yet. Interestingly, Google Home and Alexa managed to bring the concept of smart home and smart home applicants into the general public consciousness, but this remains at the consumer level primarily. I believe Mia can become an icon for the modern connected home globally.

How do you cater to the demand from the Indian market?

I think it is an open secret that India is a growing market. It has become a place for technology companies in particular to thrive, and as a result, the Indian buyers themselves are some of the most tech-savvy in the world. This will all of course lead to a much larger marketplace for high-tech products, and companies would do well not to ignore the might of such a population focused on increasing living standards via that technology.

How do you see your future with Smato?

SMATO is first and foremost an exciting company to be a part of - rarely have I found such dedicated individuals who are determined to change the face of an industry. For the longest time, this is what I personally pursued with industrial product design; and now to join a company that shares a vision for better living is really as good as it gets.

Cutting-Edge Audio Solutions

Paul Hales, President and Product Designer at Theory Audio Design (Theory) and Pro Audio Technology (PRO) discusses his distinctive product line and upcoming expansion plans.

In this competitive speaker market, Theory is a relatively new entrant. How do you differentiate Theory from other competitors?

It’s true that Theory is different. Our overarching goal is to establish ourselves as the “Porsche” of audio devices. A limited stable of our most cutting-edge products will help us build our brand as a premium one. In every product area, we pledge to provide the best performance that is currently possible. It’s a huge boast, but our first line of Theory products—which includes soundbars, on-wall loudspeakers, subwoofers, inwall and in-ceiling/pendant speakers, as well as loudspeaker controllers—has already gotten excellent feedback. Consumers, dealers, consultants, and journalists have all expressed agreement that we have set a new standard for these goods’ performance. We want to release architectural subwoofers later this year that can be mounted in-wall, on-wall, suspended from the ceiling, or freestanding.

OCTOBER 2022 I SMARTHOME WORLD I 51
INTERVIEW

What would you say is the key USP of the brand/product range? Is it performance?

Power or Technology?

Performance, Power, and Premium Technology, all three, I would say! The utility is another important USP of our product line. Without the need to specify several models, we make sure that each product category offers a wide range of installation or application possibilities, whether they are for home or commercial use. The top items on the market are part of this small but incredibly capable family.

It’s unusual to have a product range that targets both residential and commercial clientele. What are your thoughts on a dual market strategy?

The line between residential and commercial segments is blurring. We have seen many integrators diversify into the newer market. Since commercial spaces are becoming increasingly more refined and high-end, they require products that can match professional expectations. Our brand designs product range specifically to address the premium niche buyers/ users. Consumer audio is dominated by floor or standmount style loudspeakers, typically with delicate cones and domes for components. The speakers are designed for hi-fi and two-channel listening, offering a sound that is accurate and refined.

Commercial audio is primarily dominated by small plastic speakers or for foreground music, large hornbased PA boxes. Commercial loudspeaker components are strong and durable meaning they can play loud and offer massive dynamics, but the sound can lack clarity and refinement.

Theory products merge the refined sound of hi-fi equipment, with the thrilling dynamics of professional gear. Plus, combining that with smart design and Theory product range is a welcome addition in both residential and commercial markets. They are thoughtfully designed and their high-performance speakers do not need SKUs.

With all your brands, you match amplification and speakers. Do you have any plans of making powered speakers in the future? Most brands seem to be heading in that direction.

It’s best to think of all Theory loudspeakers (and PRO too, for that matter) as powered speakers; we’ve just placed the electronics in a separate rack-mount enclosure where they are easy to install and service. Powered loudspeakers require high voltage at every speaker location. Running AC to every speaker is not only impractical, in many installations, but it’s also impossible. So, while powered speakers may be a good solution for simple two-speaker installations (studio monitors or stereo listening for example), they are not good solutions for complex surround or distributed audio solutions.

However, there is one exception to this philosophy: subwoofers. We do have plans to introduce the Theory in-room subwoofers in powered versions for two distinct reasons: Firstly, one of our subs offers classleading performance and powered versions would let us capture some subwoofer-only business (users could add them to their existing non-Theory systems; and two, even in complex surround installations there are generally two subwoofers that typically sit on the floor, so getting AC power to them is simple.

You already have a premium loudspeaker brand – PRO Audio Technology. Would Theory eat into PRO’s market?

Theory is intended to work in conjunction with PRO and is targeted toward non-high-end commercial audio applications, distributed audio systems, and surround sound systems for media rooms, outdoor settings, etc. Pro Audio Technology (PRO) focuses on medium-to-large commercial installations as well as extremely upscale home theatres.

In order to provide solutions for any type of installation and budget, with systems ranging from

52 I SMARTHOME WORLD I OCTOBER 2022
INTERVIEW

$6K to $250K and beyond, PRO and Theory are highly complementary to one another.

The Theory range is quite limited but has multiple usage applications. Was that intentional?

Absolutely! Theory was created particularly to provide a condensed selection of highly functional products that can be integrated into any setting. There is no justification for providing numerous models under the same product category. Theory provides one, two, or three high-performance options in each product category, along with accessories that go with them so they can be placed in surround sound and distributed audio systems for both indoor and outdoor use in homes and businesses.

The Theory product line is purposefully limited, but don’t be fooled by this; Theory can handle practically any small- to medium-sized project with the best performance possible.

What new products can we expect from Theory in the coming years?

Late 2022, Theory will expand the DLC distributed loudspeaker controller line with two additional models. The DLC-1000.4 and DLC-1500.4 are ideal for any residential or commercial installation where highpower distributed or surround audio is needed. With channel-pair power-sharing of up to 1000W for the DLC-1000.4 or 1500W for the 1500.4, each DLC offers the flexibility to power any system size. Via their configurable outputs, the DLC models can power up to 16 Theory 16-ohm ceiling or pendant loudspeakers in Lo-Z mode, and the DLC-1500.4 can power up to 200 Theory architectural speakers in Hi-Z mode – or an

optimal hybrid of both or in any quantity in between. The DLC distributed loudspeaker controllers also offer a full DSP matrix and are TCP/IP controlled through a wired connection, or directly via the on-board Wi-Fi access point.

Early 2023, Theory will begin shipping the recently announced iws12-6 and iws12-9 architectural subwoofers. Equipped with 12-inch, 1,400 Watt, 4-inch voice coil long-throw woofers, and the ability to be installed in-wall, on-wall, ceiling mounted or flown, there isn’t an installation environment Theory’s new subwoofer models cannot handle.

With the addition of these new models, the Theory line will be complete. But of course, we have more up our sleeves in terms of product development and will be adding more high-performance and cleverly designed audio products in the years to come with more outdoor options, including landscape solutions coming first.

What are your expectations of the Theory business in India? How has your experience been with PRO FX so far?

Absolutely! Theory was developed specifically to offer a streamlined range of extremely useful products that can be included in any environment. Multiple models being offered under the same product category is not justified. In each product category, Theory offers one, two, or three high-performance alternatives together with the corresponding accessories so they may be installed in distributed and surround sound systems for both indoor and outdoor use in homes and businesses.

Though the Theory product range is intentionally small, don’t let that mislead you—the greatest performance is capable of handling nearly any small- to medium-sized job.

Samsung Introduces New Device Experiences at SDC22

Samsung Electronics recently held its annual Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) in San Francisco, bringing together developers, creators and designers to explore seamless, connected experiences powered by Samsung.

During the event, Samsung shared more about its commitment to creating simplified, gamechanging customer experiences, including the company’s updated vision for SmartThings as it evolves from a connectivity platform to an enabler of smarter lifestyles. From deeper integration with Bixby to seamless connectivity with Mattercompatible devices, SmartThings is creating a richer, more open world that empowers all users to streamline their connections and their daily lives.

“At Samsung, we continuously innovate our devices, platforms and services to be simpler and more convenient. I am proud to share the next generation of our work, like SmartThings, to further our collaboration with partners and developers,” said Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics. “As technologies become more complex, we will always search for ways to make life easier, more connected, and more flexible, so our consumers can focus on what matters most.”

Connecting Platforms and Devices With Calm Technology

Samsung’s vision of seamless connectivity is inspired by the philosophy of Calm Technology — where devices instantly work together, so consumers can save time on setup and get right into the experience. To realize this vision, Samsung reimagined SmartThings and its connected services and partnerships, including Samsung’s Hub Everywhere, extending its

capabilities to the entire smart home with audio and visual data as well as SmartThings Energy, SmartThings Pet and SmartThings Cooking. Samsung also partnered with Philips Hue to integrate Philips Hue Sync right into Galaxy devices so smart home lighting can match with the music.

The seamless experience will extend beyond Samsung’s ecosystem through SmartThings’ integration with Matter and Samsung’s membership in the Home Connectivity Alliance. Google and Samsung have worked together to enable users to find and link their devices across platforms by building a multi-admin feature on Matter devices. The collaboration will bring more devices and users into the connected home in the future.

Bixby has been integrated more deeply with SmartThings, a developer tool to build more intelligent voice user interface experiences. As Samsung’s representative voice assistant platform, Bixby has evolved to become the on-device AI solution

able to control individual Galaxy devices and the cross-device experience throughout the Samsung ecosystem. With the new Bixby Home Studio, developers can now build differentiated, customized experiences for the SmartThings platform. In addition, Bixby will be even more widely available to users with support for Latin American Spanish, starting in November.

As the smart home is becoming more advanced, Samsung is introducing a new security paradigm, enabling Samsung devices to protect each other. Samsung Knox Matrix1 is a private blockchain-based platform that turns eligible Samsung devices into a shield to protect users’ entire device ecosystem — from Galaxy devices to TVs and home appliances. Plus, users can customize personal privacy settings with the new Security and privacy dashboard, which scans for vulnerabilities, recommends security updates and gives users data management options to keep privacy and security top of mind.

Tuya Smart has launched solutions to support Matter 1.0

StandardThe Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA or the Alliance) announced the official release of the Matter 1.0 specification and the opening of the Matter certification program, which indicates Matter as an interoperable protocol that works across brands and platforms and will bring consumers more integrated and simpler smart scenes with a more robust privacy and security services.

The Matter 1.0 standard launches test cases and comprehensive test tools for Alliance members and a global certification program, including eight authorized test labs that are primed to test not only Matter, but also Matter’s underlying network technologies, Wi-Fi and Thread. This will help users understand the complete vision of Matter in various application scenarios.

This initial release of Matter, running over Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Thread, will support a variety of common smart home products, including lighting and electrical, HVAC controls, window coverings and shades, sensors, door locks, and media devices, such as TVs.

As an early participant and promoter of Matter, Tuya Smart (“Tuya”) (NYSE: TUYA, HKEX: 2391), a global IoT development platform service provider, together with other Alliance members are meeting the demands of global customers and partners for the development and application of Matter with innovative technologies and rich experiences. Moreover, Tuya will further promote Matter’s development, design, testing, and specification certification to support Matter’s global adoption and implementation.

Currently, Tuya has launched solutions for Matter, enabling global customers to become part of the first group to leverage the Matter

protocols. As an IoT development platform service provider that consistently builds an open and neutral global smart ecosystem, Tuya’s solutions for Matter have a lot of unique advantages.

First of all, based on the one-stop development capabilities of Tuya’s IoT platform, Tuya’s solutions for Matter can help global customers complete the development of Matter devices in a faster way.

Secondly, Tuya’s solutions for Matter can support more nonMatter devices to connect with Matter devices. Tuya will not only provide customers with a Bridge Hub, but also other hubs such as those for Central Control, Smart Speaker Hub, and MultiProtocol interaction, which helps customers realize the automatic interconnection between Matter devices and non-Matter devices within the local network.

Tuya’s solutions for Matter support Matter devices connecting to Tuya IoT PaaS via the Powered by Tuya App, allowing consumers to control and operate smart devices remotely. And Tuya’s solutions for Matter can help customers realize customized multi-functions to attract more users.

In addition, based on years of marketing and application

experience, and in-depth involvement in Matter’s development in the early stage, Tuya could provide full-service support when customers develop Matter devices, such as information management of Matter devices, OTA upgrading, network code distribution of Matter devices, the DCL server establishment, and more.

Tuya has a range of product solutions that support Matter, such as those for electrical, lighting, sensing, home appliances, and multimedia products, which will meet the variable development demands of global manufacturers. With Tuya’s efforts, customers can create smart scenes with the automatic connection of various Matter devices. For example, if consumers create a homecoming mode on the Powered by Tuya App, once they return home, the door sensor that connects with the lights can automatically turn on the lights and smart speakers, such as Google Alexa. Then consumers can start playing music, allowing them to feel more immersed and comfortable in the smart living experience.

Matter 1.0 standard is generally recognized as a milestone by the market. Driven by leading companies in the IoT industry, such as Tuya Smart, Matter will have a

OCTOBER 2022 I SMARTHOME WORLD I 59 NEWS

wide range of application scenarios. Meanwhile, Tuya’s support for the Matter 1.0 standard will encourage over 629,000 developers in more than 200 countries in the Tuya ecosystem to develop their own Matter devices more conveniently

and efficiently.

Whether it is the support for mainstream protocols such as Matter, Zigbee, and Wi-Fi, or building a connected ecosystem for different brands and categories

around the world, Tuya has always been a contributor to an open and shared smart ecosystem, and will continuously promote the realization of “all things connected, intelligently.”

UL Solutions Helps Manufacturers of Matter-Enabled Smart Devices to Solve Interoperability Challenges
