Lost at Sea
Story by Fraser Milne
The children are lost at sea. 2
The boy sits in a heap and lets out a loud sigh. He dreams of getting back to their house on the land. 3
His big sister scouts the skies for a lighthouse or a mountain but all she sees are some clouds. 4
She sees a bird twirling round and round as it flies. She thinks that a bird is a sign that land is near. 5
Next, the girl’s mouth drops. “Oh my gosh!” she cries, “I think I spied a mountain. I think I found land!” 6
The boy sees the mountain and shouts to his sister, “Yippee, I see land too.” 7
The boy is so glad he cries. He is proud of his big sister. 8
Comprehension Questions: Retelling the Story: 1. How did the boy feel at the start of the story? 2. What does the boy dream of? 3. What did the sister see that made her think that land was near?
Discussion: Have you ever been lost? Each series has been written with a slightly different progression to offer reading opportunities at more stages.
