Prize Tomatoes

Story by Fraser Milne

Over these past nine years, Mr Drake has been growing prize-winning tomatoes. 2

On a fine day he uses a rake to mix snake bones and pine cones into the soil. 3

If there is a frost, he will light a fire to keep the tomatoes warm. 4

He feels complete when he sees the tomatoes shine in the light of the flames. 5

Mr Drake kisses and hugs his tomatoes. His wife says he treats the tomatoes like they are his children. 6

In June, when it is time to compete, he picks five ripe ones to take to the venue. 7

This year Mr Drake’s tomatoes outshined all the others, and he won the prize. 8

Comprehension Questions: Retelling the story: 1. How many years has Mr Drake been growing tomatoes? 2. What does Mr Drake do if there is a frost? 3. How many tomatoes does he take to the venue? 4. Why do you think Mr Drake’s children are upset? Each series has been written with a slightly different progression to offer reading opportunities at more stages.
