The Unicorn Detective

Story by Fraser Milne

a Last April, my father helped the old lady next door wash her walls and swab her decks. She said to my dad, “You are an angel.” 2

e I suspected that the old lady had a secret. I think she puts on makeup to make herself look old. She tricks my decent dad so that he will help her. I reckon she could do the jobs herself. 3

i Then on Friday, I hear wild music coming from next door and see visitors in fancy-dress entering her house. 4

This is my chance to find out if the lady next door is tricking my dad. 5

o I put on my unicorn outfit and go inside with the other visitors. 6

OH MY GOSH! The lady next door is not old! The lady next door is riding a pogo stick, and her wig has fallen off. 7

u I pull off my unicorn head and stop the music. I tell her that the jig is up. My dad will not be pushed around any more. Then I run home to tell dad and give him a hug. 8

Comprehension Questions: 1. When did her dad help the lady clean her house? 2. What did she dress up in to go to the party? 3. What was the lady riding at the party?

Context Questions: 4. Have you heard the idiom “the jig is up” before? Can you work out what it means from the context? Today, the definition for the word “jig” is to dance, but this phrase’s origins comes from the 16th century where the word “jig” was slang for a practical joke or trick. So, if “the jig was up,” it meant your trick was found out, or exposed.
