Christmas Island crabs are bright red crabs that live on land for much of the year. 2
Around 100 years ago yellow crazy ants were accidentally introduced by settlers. The ants are a pest, they take over the crabs’ burrows and kill them. 3
When the first rains of the wet season arrive, a chemical in the brains of the crabs is released and millions make their way down to the sea to breed. 4
5
When they get to the beach, the male crabs dig burrows. Female crabs choose a burrow and stay in it for two weeks while the eggs mature. 6
On the next high tide, the female releases her eggs into the sea. The baby crabs look like tiny prawns for the first four weeks. They live in pools close to the beach. 7
Most years, very few baby crabs make it out of the sea. But once or twice a decade, a huge number will survive. 8
