Everything is made from atoms. Atoms have protons and neutrons in the middle. These are surrounded by electrons. Protons have a positive charge, and electrons have a negative charge. 3
When two different objects rub against each other, some of the electrons can pass from the first object to the second. This makes the first object have a positive charge and the second object have a negative charge. These electrical charges are called static electricity. 4

If you have ever seen hair stand up after bouncing on a trampoline or had a shock after shuffling across carpet, then you have witnessed static electricity. But the most powerful form of static electricity you may have seen, is lightning.
7
Static electricity is created when tiny bits of ice in clouds bump into each other. Lightning strikes when the negative charge at the bottom of the cloud connects with a positive charge on the ground. 8
Comprehension Questions: 1. What are atoms made of? 2. Give one example of static electricity? 3. Have you ever seen lightening? How did it make you feel?
