On the first day of term, Kurt’s teacher Miss Burton said, “This year we are going to make a worm farm.” “My mother could build it,” said Kurt. “She built us one at home, she is an expert.” 3

“We need to choose a sheltered spot to put it,” said Miss Burton. “How about under the tree by the turnip patch?” said Kurt. Some girls made an advert asking every person with food scraps to bring them from home to feed the worms. 4

Kurt’s mother built the worm farm and they placed it under the tree by the turnip patch. By the third term, the worm farm was making lots of worm tea. “Let’s open it up and have a look at the worms,” said Kurt. “Superb idea,” said Miss Burton. “But be alert, we don’t want to hurt the worms.” 6

7

Kurt watched the worms curl and squirm. “The worms are perfect for feeding the herbs, but they are also very dirty!” 8

Comprehension Questions: 1. Who did Kurt suggest should make the worm farm? 2. Where did they decide to put the worm farm? 3. What did the girls’ advert ask people to do?
