afety and security solutions provider G4S Kenya is seeking up to 20 top graduates this year, in a move aimed at driving and accelerating its growth strategy over the next couple of years. This is among the measures to be instituted by the risk management solutions provider as part of its change management programme captured in the firm’s business strategy for 2011. The graduate management trainee program (GMTP) is aimed at identifying suitable candidates in a range of disciplines to help drive the company’s risk management business, operations divisions and support functional roles like finance, human resources and IT among others. The programme seeks Kenyan graduates through an online application process after which the candidates will be screened and taken through a rigorous interview process and a range of qualitative and quantitative assessments alongside reference investigations. Successful candidates will then be inducted into the two year management trainee programme.

Del Monte Kenya gets health recognition

Del Monte Kenya Ltd has received commendation for its HIV/Aids Workplace Program under Business Action on Health Awards. The awards, which are presented by the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, recognize the best corporate programs developed to address global health needs. Del Monte Kenya’s HIV/Aids Workplace Program made to a final shortlisting of 9 out of more than 70 programs from companies all over the world nominated to contest. Gold Fields Ghana Ltd won the category. The winners will receive their awards during GBC’s annual conference on June 2, 2011 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York, USA. The GBC is a non-profit making organization formed to fight HIV/Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Its membership is global and it has a local chapter in Kenya. Del Monte Kenya Ltd Managing Director Mr. Stergios Gkaliamoutsas the commendation reflects the company’s effort to support those who are affected and

to educate fellow staff, their families and community about the disease and to encourage them to talk openly about it. Voluntary testing was encouraged, counseling given where necessary with the PSI and Liverpool VCT further training the staff and community on the use of female condoms. Condom dispenses were also installed for use by the staff and community. infected with HIV/Aids. Del Monte Kenya launched the program in 2001 to create awareness about the disease among its staff and the neighboring community at a time when the company was losing an average 40 employees per year to the disease. HIV/Aids prevalence in Thika at the time stood at 37.4 percent. Mr. Hesbon Madoya, Coordinator of the program says the Del Monte program was found to be unique as it’s fully integrated into the company’s medical scheme with the company taking overall care of the employees’ welfare both at the workplace and at the community. It also addresses Malaria control. While launching the program in 2001, Del Monte Kenya partnered with the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) and the Population Services International to create awareness about the disease particularly among its employees and the community, and occasion a behavioral change. An initial 94 Peer Educators drawn from staff and community were trained and released

Through a Youth Enterprise Programme introduced by Hope Worldwide, Del Monte has been able to empower some 280 youth with computer skills as well as create HIV/Aids, and drug & substance abuse awareness among them. Madoya says Del Monte Kenya has established a full medical department and the HIV/ Aids Workplace program is now fully integrated into the company’s medical scheme, with HIV/Aids handled as a normal disease. Del Monte Kenya is also working with the Kenya Human Rights Commission, local churches and other local organizations in implementing the program beyond the company. The program has largely been successful as the stigma that was initially associated with the disease has been removed and those diagnosed with the disease now live positively.

Kenyan retailer Uchumi eyes regional expansion

R

etailer Uchumi Supermarkets, whose shares will restart trading next week after a five-year suspension, said regional expansion should help its market value double within 2-5 years. Chief executive Jonathan Ciano also said the group may issue shares in two neighbouring countries longer term, and predicted its stock in Nairobi would trade above 17 shillings, having been suspended at 14.5 shillings in May 2006. “The value of the company is expected to grow by 50-100 percent within the next two years. That is the value of this organisation, and within five years it is definitely going to more than double.” Uchumi, whose local rivals include privately held Nakumatt Supermarkets, plans to increase its outlets in neighbouring Uganda to three from one in the short term, launch a hypermarket in Tanzania’s commercial capital Dar es Salaam next month, ad open two more stores in Kenya. The supermarket chain was suspended from the stock market in 2006 because of debt levels at the time. The government rescued it with a bailout loan soon after the suspension, which was accompanied by shuttering of its stores. Uchumi, which emerged from receivership in March 2010, was cleared by the Capital Markets Authority this April to return to the Nairobi Stock Exchange.

“We are going into a what you would call very cautious growth. A growth that would call for us to go into areas where we are not covered as yet,” Ciano said. “We are talking of going into green areas without cannibalising our existing network so that is how we have mitigated the risks.” To overhaul its business model, Uchumi started renting space for stores rather than getting stuck in property deals by building its own stores, allowing the firm to open new branches faster and at less cost. Sales grew to 9.7 billion shillings in the nine months to March 2011, topping the 8 billion posted in the year earlier period, Ciano said. Pretax profit for the first-half ended December jumped 41 percent. Ciano said Uchumi will eventually offer its shares in other markets in the region. “One time or the other, the board has to sit down and talk about cross-listing. If cross-listing will require additional shares, we will think about that,” he said. (Reuters)

Telposta Pensioners to Receive Monthly Dues via Orange Money

I

ntegrated mobile provider Telkom Kenya has today signed a partnership with Telposta Pension Scheme that will see the pensioner’s body dispatch its members’ dues through the Orange Money service instead of using the conventional banking services. Telkom Kenya’s Deputy CEO Jane Karuku said the partnership extends the convenience Orange Money brings to over 14,000 pensioners who are members of the scheme. “Having Orange Money is as good as having your bank on your phone. In addition to that, you can also transfer to your dependants, pay bills and all other services that come with mobile money transfer services”, said Ms. Karuku while addressing the pensioners during their AGM held at the KICC. The pension scheme members will benefit from

the wide range of value added services; among them ability to apply for loans from Equity Bank, phone book referrals and also access to withdraw their monthly dues from the over 500 Equity ATMs across the country. Ms. Karuku said: “With this development, the pension scheme members will have over 3,000 outlets across the country through which they can access their money from; which means they can withdraw their money from the nearest shopping centre”.

An estimated 90,000 new personal computers (PCs) out of approximated 148,000 pieces imported into the region were purchased in Kenya alone The high uptake of PCs in Kenya was in contrast to the worldwide PC market that contracted by 3.2 per cent and the African market that recorded an overall increase of 36,941 pieces, says a report by market research company IDC.Partnerships between vendors such as Samsung, Acer and mobile phone firms such as Safaricom and Telkom’s Kenya Orange as well as government through

the Kenya ICT board have had a phenomenal impact on the growth of I.T industry in the country. Other initiatives such as Wezesha programme have also helped college and school populace to gain access to laptops and computer desktops. “The growth in Q1 2011 was fueled primarily by a healthy demand for notebooks, with Kenya showing the highest uptake. “We are continuing to see increased interest in the region from international investors, especially with Kenya’s new Constitution, which is hoped to be fully implemented after the next

Computer Memory Memory is the ability to retain data for a period of time, short or long. RAM RAM (Random Access Memory). As your processor cranks on your game, it uses RAM to store some of the data needed to make your game work. While all forms of memory work together, RAM is considered the main memory since most data, regardless of its source, is stored in RAM before it is registered in any other storage device. Consequently, RAM is used millions of times every second. A computer uses Ram to hold temporary instructions and data needed to complete tasks. This enables the computer’s CPU (Central Processing Unit), to access instructions and data stored in memory very quickly. Computer memory is extremely important to computer operation. Files and programs are loaded into memory from external media like fixed disks (hard drives) and removable disks (floppies tapes). Memory can be built right into a system board, but it is more typically attached to the system board in the form of a chip or module. Inside these chips are microscopic digital switches which are used to represent binary data. A good example of this is when the CPU loads an application program - such as a word processing or page layout program - into memory, thereby allowing the application program to work as quickly and efficiently as possible. In practical terms, having the program loaded into memory means that you can get work done more quickly with ent waiting for the computer to perform

tasks. The process begins when you enter a command from your keyboard. The CPU interprets the command and instructs the hard drive to load the command or program into memory. Once the data is loaded into memory, the CPU is able to access it much more quickly than if it had to retrieve it from the hard drive. information is found. Different RAM Types and its uses The type of RAM doesn’t matter nearly as much as how much of it you’ve got, but using plain old SDRAM memory today will slow you down. There are main types of RAM: SDRAM, DDR and Rambus DRAM. SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM) Almost all systems used to ship with 3.3 volt, 168-pin SDRAM DIMMs. SDRAM is not an extension of older EDO DRAM but a new type of DRAM altogether. SDRAM started out running at 66 MHz, while older fast page mode DRAM and EDO max out at 50 MHz. SDRAM is able to scale to 133 MHz (PC133) officially, and unofficially up to 180MHz or higher. As processors get faster, new generations of memory such as DDR and RDRAM are required to get proper performance. DDR (Double Data Rate SDRAM) DDR basically doubles the rate of data transfer of standard SDRAM by transferring data on the up and down tick of a clock cycle. DDR memory operating at 333MHz actually operates at 166MHz * 2 (aka PC333 / PC2700) or 133MHz*2 (PC266 / PC2100). DDR is a 2.5 volt technology that uses 184 pins in its DIMMs. It is incompatible with SDRAM physically, but uses a similar parallel bus, making it easier to implement than RDRAM, which is a different technology.

Computer cables Data Cables Firewire IEEE 1394

Firewire, otherwise known as IEEE 1394, i.LINK, or Lynx, is a faster alternate to USB and is commonly used for connecting digital camcorders and external hard drives to a computer. It is also possible to ad-hoc network computers without a router over FireWire. Firewire typically has 6 pins in its connector, though a 4 pin variety is common as well.

SATA Cables

While SATA cables are used internally for connecting the hard drive to the computer’s motherboard, eSATA cables are designed for portable hard drives, and can transfer data faster than USB or FireWire. However, the eSATA cable cannot transmit power, so unlike USB, you cannot power an external hard drive with eSATA. The eSATA cable is

somewhat different from the internal SATA cable; it has more shielding, and sports a larger connector.

Shopping for computers in Nairobi you know the best places to look. When it comes to buying electronics, quality supersedes anything else.

Networking Related Cables Phone RJ11 Cable The telephone cable, otherwise known as RJ11, is still used around the world for connecting to the Internet through DSL/ ADSL modems. A standard phone cable has 4 wires and the connector has four pins. The connector has a clip at the top to help maintain a tight connection.

Ethernet Cable

Ethernet is the standard for wired networking around the world. The Ethernet cable, otherwise known as RJ45, is based on Cat5 twisted pair cable and is made from 8 individual wires. The Ethernet connector, likewise, has 8 pins and looks similar to a phone plug, but is actually thicker and wider. It too has a clip to help maintain a tight connection like a phone connector.

Factors to Consider When Buying Computer Parts/Electronics When buying a computer, or any part whatsoever, there are things to factor in to get the best products: •Quality: High quality products are very important when it comes to electronics, mostly since each piece is expensive and important. There are many computer shops in Nairobi only out to make an easy shilling, using second hand products, fakes, or even cleverly sell the wrong thing altogether. •Prices: My golden rule when it comes to electronics is “If I can bargain, am not at the right store”. With good pricing, most shops stick at a single price tag. The secret

is getting a good price for a quality product. With most of the shops in this post, you get just that. •Research the Product: Go online and find out what the best model of the product is, then visit Kenyan company website to check out what the prices are. This information is vital before going out to look for something. •Guarantee and Reputation: The best computer shops offers products with warranty and not just on paper. Many a shop in Nairobi will not offer warranty or even blame the customer for any errors in the products. It is advisable to go for reputable stores/ shops. •Stock/ Availabity: This, basically, is about how big is the shop. It is not pleasant to run around town for each different piece of accessory. A good computer shop ought to have most products under one roof. •Customer Care/ Staff: Support is essential when buying any electronics. Any good shop has competent staff that can explain and help test out different products.
