How to Identify Gemstones RUBY Whether you have inherited a piece that you just can’t identify or want to be a more informed shopper, there are several pieces of information about gem identification here that may be useful to you. Many people simply trust that the person from whom they buy a gem is honest about the stone’s attributes. While there are many reputable and trustworthy dealers out there, there also are some unscrupulous types looking to make a quick buck. As such, it is a good idea to get a handle on the basics of gem identification before you make a purchase. EMERALD Feel the stone. If it has a rough texture or seems delicate, it is not a gemstone. Gemstones are smooth and hard. Unless the stone you have is easily scratched or manipulated, you really cannot be sure that it is or is not a gem just by touch. To get an accurate assessment, you have to use a gemstone hardness testing kit. There are a wide range of kits available for purchase to suit both the amateur collector and the professional jeweler. BLUE TOPAZ Hold the stone up to the light. Examine it with a magnifying glass. Most gemstones have a flaw or two, but cut glass is flawless. Flaws, also called inclusions, detract from the value of a gemstone. However, don’t assume that glass is more valuable just because it is flawless. Cut glass can be beautiful, but it doesn’t

GREEN GARNET Research the color variations of a gemstone you hope to acquire. Many people don’t know that sapphires can be colorless, diamonds can be yellow, garnets can be purple and topaz can be pink. Color is not the most salient factor in the classification of gemstones, but it can affect the value of the stone. Purple or green garnets, red or pink topaz and red diamonds are the most rare

Freedom Airline Express to Start Regular flights to Wajir and Mandera Leading Charter Airline Company, Freedom Airline Express has announced plans to launch scheduled flights from Wilson Airport to Wajir town in a bid to explore emerging business opportunities in Northern Kenya. The inaugural flight is set to take off on 1 August 2011 and will be made twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays. The flights will be in addition to two weekly flights to Mandera town, which the airline launched months ago. Freedom Airline CEO, Mr. Mahad Abshir says the airline reached the decision to schedule regular flights to Wajir after numerous flights to the northern town proved worthwhile registering impressive passenger numbers. “After the first two flights which were fully booked in advance, we decided to further explore the option of scheduled flights to Wajir town. We are currently flying twice to Mandera and have plans to increase the frequency to three times a week,” said Mr. Abshir.

of devolved governance, we anticipate rapid development in these areas. As an airline, we’re looking at playing our role in facilitating development through providing fast and reliable transport for both cargo and passengers and also increase our bottomline,” said Mr. Abshir. The airline, which operates at Wilson airport with a turboprop aircraft, is planning to increase its fleet in a bid to enhance its capacity to meet the rising demand in both passenger and cargo transport. The announcement comes in the wake of increased tourist numbers with most airlines operating in full capacity. These, against the escalating fuel costs and the biting inflationary rates. The airline remains upbeat that there are good prospects in the foreseeable future even with the introduction of the county governments. “There are lots of opportunities in some of this marginalized towns and with the new form

The airline has also intimated that there are plans to introduce a product for the Muslim community ahead of the holy month of Ramadan set to be celebrated this August.

KCB and Postal Corporation of Kenya Sign Agency Banking Deal

K

CB Group has partnered with Postal Corporation of Kenya to act as a KCB Mtaani Agent. This agreement has set a stage for about 10m unbanked Kenyans to access formal banking services from Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK). “KCB Agent Banking was launched in April this year and so far we have recruited over 600 agents operating in Nairobi, Coast, Rift Valley, Western and Central Regions. We plan that by the end of the year, the bank will recruit 2,000 agents enabling us increase our reach and presence so that our services can easily be accessed at grass root level,” said KCB Group CEO Dr Martin OduorOtieno. The partnership is designed to leverage on PCK’s over 700 outlets countrywide to boost the bank’s geographic reach. “We do acknowledge that agent banking practices worldwide have had huge success with Postal partnerships and KCB is tapping into this huge potential in the roll out of agent banking services. Over the last two months, KCB team and the PCK staff have had internal tests and today, we are launching it in the seven General

Post Offices in the country. This will be followed by a full rollout to the more than 500 postal corporation withdrawals. Prospective customers can also complete account opening forms at the KCB Mtaani outlets for onward delivery to the bank. outlets in the coming weeks,” he said. Speaking at the same event at Teleposta Towers, Postal Corporation of Kenya Postmaster General Major General (Rtd.) Hussein Ali said the partnership will enable KCB to provide convenient banking services to customers through some selected Posta outlets. “KCB joins our growing portfolio of agency services with leading corporate clients both in the private and public sector. Their coming on board therefore is a clear demonstration of the bank’s confidence in Posta Kenya’s capacity to meet their expectations in delivery of efficient services to customers,” said Ali. KCB agency banking platform is connected through the KCB Connect mobile telephone channel. Agents need to have a telephone set to facilitate deposit taking and

This has been made possible with the implementation of T24 system that has allowed the bank to accelerate innovation, enhance efficiency and create an excellent customer service experience across KCB regional network. With this exciting development, KCB will soon be rolling out internet banking and other e-products in the coming weeks. This new channel will not replace other channels that exist in the bank such as Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and branch network. Instead, agent banking complements KCB business objective to leverage on technology and partnership to increase the bank’s service delivery channels. KCB has over 170 branches and 400 ATMs in Kenya, and this is well complemented with PesaPoint and Kenswitch ATM network.
